KIM SULTANAABS Australia is pleased to introduce Kim Sultana to our beef sales team.

Kim has been involved in the AI industry since early 2001, firstly in an administration role and then moving into other areas including semen & embryo handling, importation of product for clients, freight and customer sales & deliveries. Moving

to another employer where she was employed for just over 12 years, Kim was involved with the dairy and beef sides of the business, enjoying the beef semen sales area the most. Kim says she basically enjoys talking all things ‘cows’ and is passionate about everything involved with breeding cattle from the ground up; from discussing the seed used when sod seeding, to the end results of AI with animals on the ground and through the saleyards.

Kim has also recently spent time working on a local dairy farm, helping with springers, calf raising and milking. She admits she has been guilty of picking the farmer’s brain to pieces about anything and everything ‘cattle’ while working in the pit!

Kim is married, with two teenage daughters and, apart from cattle, Kim’s interests include gardening and her horses.

Please use this update in conjunction with the ABS Australia Sire Directory 2014-15. The update is introducing new bulls available for the autumn-winter joining. As in previous years the ABS Sire Sampler Program is available (refer page 11).

ABS Australia’s motto of “Investing Locally, Thinking Global”, continues to grow with semen sales now to 22 countries in 10 breeds, and embryos sales to South America and SE Asia.

The Australian beef market share results for distribution companies were analysed and released by the NHIA. ABS Australia ranked number one with 40% of units sold. Thank you to all resellers and purchasers for your support.

Beef Class Structural Assessment SystemStructural problems in cattle have a substantial effect on both the reproductive and growth performance of a beef herd. It is widely recognised that structural problems in sires have detrimental effects on conception rates, calving patterns and thus profitability. Similarly, females with inadequate structural characteristics are more prone to weaning lighter calves or conceiving later in the breeding season than their more functional counterparts. These structural problems are filtered through the supply chain resulting in reduced income for the producer, feedlot and thus reducing the overall productivity of the Australian Beef Industry.

The current trend for improving consistency and quality has shifted producers’ focus, towards selecting seedstock on carcass and growth genetic traits (EBVs). Whilst, this selection has been, and will continue to be pivotal in developing the Australian beef industry, we must not forget the fundamentals of livestock breeding.

The Beef Class Structural Assessment System was designed by the MLA, the BIA and several breed societies to address structural problems in the beef industry. Detailed analysis of three thousand genetically linked herds indicated that structural characteristics such as leg and foot structure were moderately to highly heritable. BEEFXCEL now services many seedstock operations in their selection and grading of stock using the Beef Class Structural Assessment System.

The 2007 ‘Wyuna’ Sale Bulls and heifer herd have been independently structurally assessed to maximise the quality of stock on offer. Any animals deemed inadequate have been removed from the sale draft. The 2008 ‘Wyuna’ sale animals were assessed by Liam Cardile of BEEFXCEL on 8 November 2007.

How to use The Beef Class Structural Assessment SystemThe Beef Class Structural Assessment System uses a 1-9 scoring system for feet and leg structure:

– A score of 5 is ideal. (Note: Temperament Score of 1 is preferable).

– A score of 4 or 6 shows slight variation from ideal, but this includes most animals. An animal scoring 4 or 6 would be acceptable in any breeding program.

– A score of 3 or 7 shows greater variation but would be acceptable in most commercial programs. However, seedstock producers should be vigilant and understand that this score indicates greater variation from ideal.

– A score of 2 or 8 are low scoring animals and should be looked closely before purchasing.

– A score of 1 or 9 should not be catalogued and are considered culls.

Group Breedplan EBVsEstimated Breeding Values (EBVs)The EBV is the best estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for that trait.

Calving EaseEBVs are based on calving ease (CE) scores, birth weights and gestation length information. More positive EBVs are favourable and indicate easier calving.

DIR Direct calving ease indicates how well the animal influences the birth of its progeny.

DTRS Daughter’s calving ease indicates how well the animal produces daughters that have easier calving.

BirthGL Gestation Length EBV (days) is based on AI records. Lower (negative) GL EBVs indicates easier calving and increased growth after birth.

BWT Birth Weight EBV (kg) is based on the measured birth weight of animals, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value the lighter the calf at birth and the lower the likelihood of a difficult birth. This is particularly important when selecting sires for use over heifers.

FertilitySS Scrotal Size EBV (cm) is an indicator of male fertility in regards to semen quality and quantity. Higher (positive) EVBs indicate higher fertility. SS is also

positively associated with female fertility.

DC Days to Calving EBV (days) is an indicator of female fertility based on the time between a cows first exposure to a bull and when she subsequently calves. Cows that calve late in the season or fail to calve are penalised. This is more useful as a sire trait. Lower (negative) EBVs are preferred indicating shorter days to calving for the sires daughters.

GrowthMilk 200-Day Milk EBV (kg) is an estimate of an animal’s milking ability. For sires, this EBV is indicative of their daughter’s milking ability as it affects the

200 day weight of their calves.

200W 200-Day Growth EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of animals taken between 80 and 300 days of age. Values are adjusted to 200 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal’s genetic merit for growth to early ages.

A black Angus, born Feb. 17, 1998, New Design 878 has been an impressive producer since he was a yearling.

At the turn of the year, 878’s production level approached 725,000 units, and he continues to rank in ABS’s top 20 bulls for beef semen sales in several regions across the globe. From 2003 through 2006, New Design 878 topped the registration charts as the number one sire for registrations in the Angus breed, still holds the single-year registration record with 10,190 calves registered in 2004 for total lifetime registrations with 52,978 calves through September 2014.

“We knew from the day 878 arrived at ABS that he was going to be a popular animal,” said Doug Frank, ABS beef product manager. “He had a quick start and customers really liked his first calves — skyrocketing his popularity. He has since had a strong finish — continuing to offer the highest accuracy multi-trait proof in the industry.”

Despite his age, New Design 878 continues to hit the list of American Angus Association’s Pathfinders — holding the top slot for five years from 2008-2012 and remaining No. 12 today. 878’s maternal influence will likely be his most important legacy with 16,630 daughters on record weaning 55,543 calves and continuing to pass along his phenomenal genes.
