ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is a rigid industrial pipe system that combines corrosion & abrasion resistance with impact strength even at sub-zero temperatures. ABS Industrial is a lightweight thermoplastic piping system that offers excellent strength and durability even at temperatures down to -40°C. This complete system solution offers an extensive product range from 15 to 300mm (NB) and a 50 year design life. The quick and simple solvent cement jointing system, together with it’s excellent corrosion and abrasion resistance have made ABS the material of choice for many applications including HVAC, Glycol & Chilled water, Slurries & Water & Wastewater Treatment.

Pressure/Temperature relationship ABS is manufactured to international standards. Pressure ratings are based on water at ambient temperature (20°C) with a 50 year design life and a residual safety factor of 2.1. As with all plastic pipe materials, when operating at temperatures above 20°C, pressure ratings must be adjusted as detailed in the graph below.

Jointing Methods

Solvent Cement Jointing ABS Industrial is a solvent cement jointed system. Solvent cement welding is a simple process that produces a high integrity permanent joint, that is of equal or greater strength than the pipe itself.

Flanged Connections Flanged connections are an ideal way of connecting to plant and other materials in larger sizes. A range of stub flanges and backing rings are available in different drillings that allow a flanged connection to many international flange standards.

Threaded Connections ABS Industrial offers a range of plastic and metal threaded fittings for connecting to plant or other materials. Care needs to be taken not to over-tighten threaded connections. Assembly should be carried out by hand and final tightening by a strap wrench, if necessary. Pipe wrenches must not be used. Plastic threaded fittings should not be used when connecting metal to plastic, if the joint is likely to experience a temperature change of +/-5ºC. Composite unions should be used instead. PTFE tape should be used when making threaded connections. Some thread sealants such as Loctite 542 and 572, can chemically attack ABS and must not be used.

Quality, Standards & approvals ABS Imperial pipe and fittings are manufactured in accordance with relevant British standards, BS 5391 (pipe) BS 5392 (fittings). It is manufactured in an environment, which operates a Quality Assurance System assessed to ISO 9001 and offers a 50 year design life with a residual safety factor of 2.1. Quality is further assured with third party approvals for the water industry.
