President’s Message
Lynnsey Slanina — President Absaroka Region
As I sit here getting ready to write this, I am gazing outside on
this beautiful Saturday, February 22, 2020. It’s near 50 degrees
out, with a slight breeze. I can feel the spring light coming in
the window, teasing me, but I know it’s about to duck down
behind a cloud and soon to follow, behind the horizon. Yes,
the days are getting longer. Yes, it’s getting a bit warmer over-
all. Then the National Weather Service has to ruin my rumina-
tions by telling me that this coming week, Winter will be back
for a little while. That’s Montana, doing what she wants.
I’ve had it: I’m going to pack up my bags and run away. At
least for a little while. I’ll be off to Palm Springs at the end of
this week to attend the Zone 14 President’s meeting. We had
this bright idea last year while in Saskatoon to jaunt off to the
warm lands of California! And I’m super glad we all agreed!
The meeting will take place at the same venue that Parade will
be in June. I’ll give you all a full report when I return. I have
talked to a few of you, but please don’t hesitate to let me know
any questions or concerns that I can take with me regarding our
club, Parade, or PCA in general—I will take them along and
address them with many in the PCA executive council.
Thank you again to the Kruegers and to everyone who came to
the Baked Potato Party last weekend. A wonderful time was
had by all! I can’t wait for our next jaunt with you all!
The next thing on our agenda is the Tech Session on March 21,
and then our first drive of the season, Road to Chico, April 25
& 26, 2020.
Last night we watched Ford v Ferrari starring Matt Damon and
Christian Bale. It was up for four Oscars, and won two—Best
Film Editing, and Best Sound Editing. I can attest to it being
deserving of both. The cinematography was also wonderful: I
felt like I could smell the gasoline on some of those scenes.
Christian Bale’s portrayal of Ken Miles while driving made me
feel a bit like someone was filming me while driving, the way
he talked to the car and praised her and asked her for more. I
want to know more back story of how Carroll Shelby got to
where he was with Ford Motor Company. Yes, yes, I know
I’m being a little blasphemous by going on about all these
“other” marques, however, Shelby does drive a Porsche Speed-
ster in the opening scenes. It’s good to see it, although you
cringe when he does a U-turn across multiple lanes of traffic
while a bit angry. Not to worry, Porsche Purists, film and tele-
vision have ways of keeping those vintage cars pristine: it’s
called, not using a vintage car at all! For film, if you’re using a
car in a scene, you usually must have at least three cars, so any
one car has two backups. There’s not a lot of vintage metal just
laying around that can still run. A lot of film cars are replicas,
and there’s a lot of magic that goes into making us suspend our
disbelief. But let us not fret—ALL the Cobras were replicas.
Ford v Ferrari was a great way to spend two and a half hours,
cheering and crying, crying and cheering. I highly recommend
grabbing some popcorn and turning it up—get ready to smell
the rubber.

Editor’s Message
Dan Cole
Well we’re off and running for another season here in the
Absaroka Arrow newsletter. The first event of the year
was our Baked Potato Party at the Krueger’s. As usual I
brought my camera with full intention to document the
people and events of the afternoon, but also as usual, I got
too busy talking and not busy taking pictures! Par for the
course.
That’s’ where as Editor of the Absaroka Arrow I can use
your combined help. If you’re at our events, take pic-
tures, and think you have a good, or great one, send it to
me. I’d love to include those submissions into the Ab-
saroka Arrow and highlight your photo skills. The IPhone
and Androids are the most popular cameras in the world,
so you have all the equipment you need.
That segues me to my second topic. Each year during the
newsletter completion one of the things we lack is reader
and member contributions. Do you like to write, do you
have the recipe for everyone’s favorite baked potato top-
ping to share with those that loved it, or a photo of your
grandchild(ren) in their new PCA Juniors gear, all of that
is fair game.
So here’s my challenge to you the members, at the up-
coming tech session let see if someone can write an article
about it, and take some pictures. Our big season kickoff
driving event is the trip to Chico Hot Springs Resort, so
I’m really laying down the challenge there! Let’s see
some fun driving pictures, people pictures, scenes from
the saloon, pool, dinner, etc.
Remember, submitting stuff to the “From the Regions”
section of PANORAMA is fun for me to do, it high-
lights our great region and it’s wonderful seeing your
work in print.
I’ll see you at the Tech Session, where I’m looking for-
ward to learning and maybe even enjoying one of these
cinnamon rolls that seem to be so talked about.
Tschüβ,
Dan

Coolant / Antifreeze by Pedro P. Bonilla (GCR PCA)
Once upon a time you could only use Porsche
coolant in your water-cooled Porsche, but
times and products have changed and now
you have a choice ... several, actually.
I know you’ve heard the stories about how
your coolant will turn to gel if you put some-
thing else in there other than genuine Porsche
coolant, but if you have a little patience and
read on, I’ll give you the skinny. For those of
you with “real” air cooled Porsches, thank
you for reading this far, but you’ve read
enough. See you next issue ;)
Logically, you’d think that a “wasserboxer”
engine (water cooled boxer engine) would be
cooled with wasser (water) right? Not ex-
actly. And why does it need to be water
cooled, anyway?
A typical, 6 cylinder Porsche cruising at
around 70 mph (3,350 RPM) will produce
10,050 controlled explosions per minute in-
side the engine, as the spark plugs ignite the
fuel/air mixture in each cylinder. Obviously,
these explosions produce an enormous
amount of heat, and if not controlled, will de-
stroy the engine in a matter of minutes. His-
torically there have been 2 choices for con-
trolling this heat: air and water cooling. The
original Porsche engines were all air-cooled,
but with the advent of more strict environ-
mental regulations it became more efficient to
use water instead of air to cool the engines
and now all internal-combustion engines in
Porsches are water cooled.
Pure water is probably the best fluid for hold-
ing and transferring heat, but it has three
problems. It freezes at 32º F which causes it
to become solid and expand, thus cracking the
engine, it boils at 212º F turning into vapor at
too low a temperature considering those gen-
erated by the internal combustion engine, and
pure water running through the cooling sys-
tem would promote internal galvanic corro-
sion.
So, science came to the rescue. By adding a
chemical product known as Ethylene Gly-
col (C2H6O2) to pure water, it changes the
freezing and boiling points of the new fluid,
now known as antifreeze or coolant.
Adding Ethylene Glycol obtained the needed
anti-freezing qualities, but the coolant still
boiled at too low a temperature. So again, sci-
ence to the rescue. By pressurizing the sys-
tem to a safe pressure of 14.7 psi the boiling
temperature of the coolant is now raised an-
other 45º F (25º C) so the coolant can with-
stand the higher temperatures without boiling.
Coolant or antifreeze, has four (4) basic func-
tions it must provide:
1.- It must carry heat from the engine to the
radiators where it will be dissipated
2.- It must not freeze in the winter and must
not boil in high temp environments
3.- It must lubricate the system’s moving
parts such as the water pump, and
4.- It must protect the cooling system against
corrosion
There are 3 basic types of coolants based on
the different types of additives used:
Inorganic Additive Technology (IAT), Or-
ganic Additive Technology (OAT) and Hy-
brid Organic Additive Technology
(HOAT). Although, technically each one of
these would work on any automotive cooling
system, each one was developed to meet spe-
cific manufacturer’s needs.
11
IAT has been around since the first water cooled
engines. It contains silicates and or phosphates that
form a protective barrier on everything in the cool-
ing system, even on the hoses. IAT coolant is gen-
erally recommended for iron-block and heavy-duty
engines.
OAT coolants work differently. Aluminum and
ferrous metals form a surface-layer of corrosion in
the presence of moisture. OAT coolants anneal
(transform by the engine’s heating and cooling cy-
cles) this metal-oxide layer into a thin surface coat-
ing that protects against further corrosion. OAT
coolant is what’s in our engines because most of
the components are aluminum.
HOAT are hybrid coolants that use both silicate
and organic acid corrosion inhibitors, generally rec-
ommended for engines that have iron-blocks and
aluminum heads.
The recommended antifreeze for our Porsche vehi-
cles is the OAT type.
Many of the famous, over-the-counter brands offer
OAT coolant with an aluminum-protecting inhibi-
tor package and contain no silicates, borates or
phosphates and will be stated as such on their la-
bels. Generally these are called “Extended Life
Antifreeze Coolant”.
These coolants can be put on top of the existing Porsche
coolant, if needed for a top off, even if it’s a different
color, and although Porsche sells it’s coolant as a lifetime
product, whenever there’s a need to service any cooling
system component, such as a radiator, a cooling line, the
thermostat or the water pump, for which the system must
be drained, fresh coolant mix should be used to ensure
that the additives are there in the necessary quantities to
protect the newly installed surfaces.
As we saw in the table (above) the recommended mix for
most of us in the lower 48 is a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and
water. Because tap water contains many minerals and
chemicals which could reduce or eliminate the wanted
effects of the additives, it is highly recommended that dis-
tilled water be used for the dilution. You can purchase an
already diluted 50/50 mix from most of the antifreeze
manufacturers, but it is generally cheaper if you make the
mix yourself and you can also adjust the proportion to
your specific needs.
Check you coolant level frequently. If you notice a drop
in level (from cold to cold) check your coolant
cap. Chances are it’s an old (even an original) cap which
needs to be replaced after 4 or 5 years, since it can lose
it’s pressure-holding ability. If you need to top off, it’s
fine to do it with just distilled water. You don’t need to
use mix, not for a small amount.
The Ethylene Glycol used in coolant
is poisonous to humans and
pets. Take all necessary precau-
tions.
On a final note, regarding the “mixing of non Porsche
coolant with Porsche coolant will turn to gel” issue, here’s
the scoop.
Porsche was one of the first manufacturers to use an all
aluminum engine and they were pioneers in the develop-
ment of the Organic Additive Technology (OAT) for anti-
freeze. In those days the concentration of silicates, bo-
rates and phosphates (among others) was so high in the
commercially available IAT coolants, that when mixed
with OAT this would cause the additives to precipitate out
of solution and would clog many of the fine cooling vanes
in the radiators and engine. This precipitate had the con-
sistency of slush.
Bottom line: Don’t mix different types of antifreeze.

ant, cooling systems and more, please visit my website

With the GP Ice Race marking its second year in the Porsche family’s home of Zell am See, co-founder Ferdinand “Ferdi” Porsche reveals how his ice dream became a reality.
A team of people are working hard with their
shovels. It’s the day before the GP Ice Race and
one of the snow banks at the track entrance isn’t
quite right. In the middle of the flying snow, one
member of the team is leading by example, show-
ing the rest not only how he wants the top of the
bank profiled, but also how to use the awkward
long-handled shovels to maximum effect. Then
one of his radios crackles and he’s called away to
deal with another last-minute issue. With a hoot of
laughter and pats on the back all round, Ferdinand
“Ferdi” Porsche dashes on.
The 26 year-old architect has obviously inherited
plenty of the drive of his illustrious forebears, not
least the grandfather who founded a certain sports
car manufacturer. Over the last couple of years,
this has found an outlet in the rebirth of ice racing
in the picture-postcard Alpine beauty of Zell am
See. Later that evening, at a star-studded party or-
ganized by the Californians behind the air-cooled
cult Luftgekühlt, Ferdi reveals how the GP Ice
Race came about.
“The GP Ice Race is the baby of a friend of mine,
Vinzenz Greger, and me. During our time at uni-
versity, we could never work out why it seemed
like so few of our generation were as into motor
sport as we were,” he explains. “And then, one
time when we were in Zell am See to do some ski-
ing, we were looking at the spiked tires of my fa-
ther’s 550 from when it competed in ice racing. I
knew a little about the races that had been held
here years ago – but not much and I couldn’t think
why it had been so long since they had been last
held.
We started by talking to Hans-Joachim Stuck and
Richie Lietz, asking what it would take to hold the
race, whether people would come and so on. Then
we met the mayor, the people from the local tour-
ism authority and the Austrian Motorsport Federa-
tion and it all started to come together. Eighteen
months later, the first GP Ice Race happened. We
didn’t expect all that many people to turn up, so
were really surprised when a few thousand did. I
guess the motor sport community is quite a tight
one, and always looking for cool new things …
We’ve already been blown away by what’s hap-
pening this year. Look at this – we’ve got Luft-
gekühlt here in little Zell am See. We’ve got com-
13
petitors coming to my beautiful town, my family’s home
for the last few decades, from all over the world – even
one from New Zealand.”
Over the next couple of days, the GP Ice Race showed
why so many people have put their faith in Ferdi. On a
600m track built on top of 40cm of ice, interesting cars,
beautiful cars, historically significant cars and sometimes
just cool cars, slipped and slithered and raced their way
into the history books. Many, in the controlled environ-
ment of the race track, towed ski racers behind them in a
renaissance of the lost art of skijöring. Two Porsche brand
ambassadors were among them: Le Mans driver Jörg
Bergmeister had the Norwegian Olympic ski champion
Aksel Lund Svindal in tow (Professional driver and skier.
Closed road. Do not attempt).
Priceless historics ventured out and the crowds cheered
them on, and then cheered even louder when the locals
competed against them with cars worth a tiny fraction of
their cost. Famous racing drivers did demo runs in a fleet
of Taycan Turbo S electric sports cars, there were works
rally cars, and, in among it all, car nuts ran a hugely di-
verse selection of cars ancient and modern, hugely expen-
sive and held together with tank tape and cable ties. And
they loved every moment of it.
Watching the 16,000-strong crowd is almost as fascinat-
ing as watching the cars at the GP Ice Race, with a real
mixture of people mingling in a shared enthusiasm for all
things four-wheeled. In these times of Instagram mo-
ments, exquisitely curated displays of museum-quality
cars, lit and displayed with the snow-capped mountains in
the background, helped launch countless selfies. As the
sun set, the tempo of the party atmosphere intensified,
with music from both the DJ and the magic of internal
combustion acting as perfect accompaniments.
People have started describing the GP Ice Race as being
like a Goodwood on Ice, and in Ferdi Porsche and
Vinzenz Greger, it certainly has the right sort of detail-
obsessed, motor sport-enthusiast bosses. In terms of num-
bers of cars and guests, there are many similarities to
when the Goodwood Festival of Speed first started in
1993, but it is aimed at a new generation of motor racing
fans for whom the party and the social media moments are
as important as who finished which race in what position.
As an architect, Ferdi Porsche’s satisfaction comes from
seeing something that he has designed become real. In the
GP Ice Race, he has designed something that has every
chance of becoming a diary-blocking annual reality for
every motor racing enthusiast.

Editor’s Note:
One of the fun things about going to the annual Porsche Parade is
having the opportunity of meeting members of the Porsche Family.
Ferdinand “Ferdi” Porsche was at the 2012 Porsche Parade in Salt
Lake City. It was nice meeting him at the various events during the
week. If you have a chance to go to a Porsche Parade, you’ll enjoy it.

Twenty six members of the Absaroka Region gathered in
February at the new home of Erik and Stephanie Krueger
in Billings for our 9h Annual Baked Potato Party. The
Krueger’s new home is hidden at the end of a winding
mountain road, amongst the pine trees near the airport.
You’d never know it was there. The weather was unsea-
sonably warm and missing the eight inches of snow we
experienced last year. The twisty, turn-filled road if it
was paved, could be an excellent Absaroka Hill Climb
event there! The neighbors would hate it I’m sure. Their
home with its pool horseshoe pits and space is the new
official Absaroka Party House! We hope the Kruegers are
onboard with this!
Once everyone assembled, the event began with past Ab-
saroka vice president Jack Burke offering a heartwarming
toast remembering our dear departed friend and past presi-
dent Herb Stoick. Jack and Herb had grown close this
past year as president and vice president of our region and
even more so during Herb’s illness. Using Herb’s home-
made wine brought by his brother Rod and grandnephew
Logan Gibson (a future PCA member with Herb’s black
and orange 928 once he turns 18), everyone raised a glass
to honor our dear and departed friend. Saudade Herb.
The baked potato has grown to a new status in the Ab-
saroka Region. Outgrown are the basic and traditional
toppings of sour cream, butter, bacon and chives has
moved on to more exotic topping like Pulled Pork, chili,
chicken taco, meatballs and many other delicious top-
pings. There was also Tom Agnew’s ever delicious salad
and once again his beautiful antique bowl made it safely
home to Big Timber!
After dinner, Lynnsey handed out the new version of the
Potato Quiz for the event. Doug Oakes won with an
amazing score of 17/20! He won the official Mr. Potato
Head and Potato masher Prize. President Lynnsey Slanina
also made microwave potato bag prizes for the 2nd and
third place finishers

WEC: Porsche 911 RSR Finishes Second In Austin
After a fiercely-contested race at the Sports Car
World Endurance Championship WEC in the
USA, Porsche celebrated its fourth podium result
of the season. The reigning champions Kévin Estre
and Michael Christensen concluded the six-hour
race in Austin in second place in the GTE-Pro
class.
The Race
At the wheel of their Porsche 911 RSR, which is
based on the high-performance 911 GT3 RS road-
legal sports car, Kévin Estre (France) and Michael
Christensen (Denmark) were just 4.210 seconds off
claiming victory after 173 laps without a single
yellow phase. Their teammates Gianmaria Bruni
(Italy) and Richard Lietz (Austria), however, were
unlucky. A technical problem threw the No. 91
Porsche 911 RSR three places down the field, with
the pair ultimately taking the flag in seventh place
in the GTE-Pro class. In the manufacturers’ classi-
fication, Porsche retains second place. In the GTE-
Am class, Matteo Cairoli (Italy), Egidio Perfetti
(Norway) and Germany’s Laurents Hörr clinched
third place in the 2017-spec Porche 911 RSR
fielded by the Project 1 squad.
Round five of the WEC in Austin was character-
ized by different tire strategies and many duels.
Under cloudy skies and in temperatures of around
20 degrees Celsius, spectators were treated to a six
-hour sprint event without a single safety car phase
on the Circuit of the Americas (COTA). Taking up
the race from the second grid spot, Estre and Chris-
tensen put in a spirited and flawless drive and were
rewarded with second place. However, the race for
the Silverstone winners Bruni and Lietz proved
disappointing. While running in fourth place, Bruni
suddenly found he could not change gears and
rolled to the edge of the track. After resetting the
electrical system, the gear shifting worked again.
Still, to be on the safe side, the team replaced the
battery at the next pit stop. The lost time relegated
the Porsche 911 RSR back to seventh place in the
GTE-Pro class.
Comments On The Race
Kévin Estre (Porsche 911 RSR #92): “In terms of
tire choice, we chose a different strategy than most
of our competitors today. We raced on used slicks
for most of the time while our rivals ran new tires
and vice versa. That’s why we were sometimes
ahead and sometimes behind. But we didn’t let that
faze us and we simply focused on the job at hand.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite enough to win and
we were only four seconds off, but second place
yields us important points for the championship.”
Michael Christensen (Porsche 911 RSR #92):
“We got the best out of the car. The team did a
flawless job and we drove a steady race. I hope
we’ll be at the top of the podium again next time.”

The annual Absaroka Baked Potato party is a time to regroup during our cold Montana win-
ters. Thank you to the Krueger’s; Eric, Stephanie, Cannon and Scotlynn for welcoming us to
your home and enjoying a hot baked potato. There was a moment to remember, lots of
laughs, and no one went home hungry. It’s not the cars, it’s the people!
Thank You!
