Notes on the Programby Greg Thomas © 2013

Coming off a nine-state tour, WyntonMarsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln CenterOrchestra are joined in the House of Swingby the 70-member choir Chorale LeChateau, led by conductor Damien Sneed.Marsalis and Sneed have been collabo-rating since Marsalis first composed thiswork, a compositional re-enactment basedon the order of service of the AbyssinianBaptist Church, in honor of the historicHarlem church’s 200th anniversary in 2008.

The Abyssinian Mass continues Marsalis’aesthetic investigation of the power of spir-itual optimism to confront or transcend theblues, as first presented on the smallerensemble work, In This House, On ThisMorning (1992). This theme also inspiritedthe large-scale All Rise, featuring jazz bigband, symphony orchestra, and choir.

Tonight’s choir, says Sneed, is comprisedof top-flight artists from The MetropolitanOpera and Broadway, as well as standoutjazz and gospel singers.

I formed the choir back in January 2009for President Obama’s first inaugura-tion. Jazz at Lincoln Center wanted meto get a group of singers to go therewith them to sing in the Celebration ofAmerica program. So, I hand-selectedpeople that I’ve worked with over theyears, from going to high school inAugusta, Georgia to D.C. for gradschool, and people I’ve met whileworking at The Juilliard School or forother professional engagements.

Marsalis was drawn to Sneed’s musicaldepth:

Damien works well under pressure andis capable of performing a startlingrange of music from baroque and clas-sical pieces to romantic warhorses to

contemporary gospel songs. In additionto his stellar musical credentials, Mr.Sneed also possesses a sterling heart. He is an ambassador for classical andgospel music who brings positivity, optimism, and thoroughness to everyoccasion. His talent stretches acrosstraditional divisions. In the realestsense, he uses his artistry to make ourworld a better place.

Sneed and Marsalis harmonized theirvisions to refine the orchestration for thetour and tonight’s show, which will berecorded for possible release. Sneeddescribes the Abyssinian Mass as “inge-nious” and emphasizes Marsalis’ years ofstudy of Jewish and Christian religious his-tory and culture to write the Mass librettowith integrity. Going beyond pressaccounts in 2008 that aptly recalled theintegration of idiomatic big band tech-niques with gospel shouts and plaintivemoans, call and response vocalizations, and prayerful moments of quiet solitude,Sneed relates other qualities that maketonight’s rendition special.

Having grown up performing in the church,Sneed marvels at the keen manner in whichMarsalis devised each movement to cap-ture the emotional timbre and communalintent of a church service while stylizing theorchestration with his own fingerprint. The“Devotional” begins the Mass with openchoir voicing and harmony recalling earlymusic in Western history, coupled with adownward modulation as the vocal regis-ters ascend. “Lord’s Prayer” is eclectic, synthesizing European choral approacheswith jazz styling similar to Singers Unlimitedand Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross. The“Processional” features Basie-like swingwith primal choir stomps and hand claps, marching “down the streets of Glory land,”followed by “Invocation and Chant,” wherea member of the trombone section singsand improvises as the choir holds a hum inthe fashion of Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

Jazz at Lincoln Center

“The effect is very ethereal and transcen-dent and uplifting. It really makes you feelthat it’s a chant taking you to a higherplace of existence within the service,”Sneed says.

“Responsive Reading” is plaintive, soft, with a feeling akin to Lester “Pres” Young.“Gloria Patri” features familiar choral calland response juxtaposed with intricate sax-ophone section passages. After intermis-sion, one of the many highlights is the

“Recessional,” exhibiting not only masteryof train onomatopoeia, but relating Old andNew Testament history via a roll call of bib-lical characters set to the chords of AntonioCarlos Jobim’s “Waters of March” andScott Joplin’s “A Real Slow Drag” from theopera Treemonisha as they “ride up toheaven on the Glory train.”

Such catholic diversity is a musical reflec-tion of the meaning of tonight’s service:everyone has a place in the House of God.
