and Dr. B. Rao, visited Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), Monterey, California, USA from 18th-29
th September
2011.
This was a combined initiative of DIAT (DU) and NPS for getting into
collaboration in defence and security. The delegates participated in a joint
workshop on “Defeating Terrorism”. The workshop was attended by people
from United States Pacific Command, Systems Centre Pacific, SPAWAR,
Defence Threat Reduction Agency, Space System Academics, Lawrence
Livermore National Laboratory, Institute of Defence Analysis, Office of the
Under Secretary of Defence, USA, Director of External Affairs, USA and
US Office of Naval Research(Global). The Indian delegates also interacted
with the heads of various Departments of Engineering and Science, Deans
and Research scholars for the future collaborative research activities.

The delegates of DIAT (DU) presented the tools like Tomorrow‟s Textiles,
Exploiting Self Organizing Network, and Wireless Sensor Network for
Automatic Identification Systems, Microwave generation and Intelligent
Sensors. During the visit DIAT delegation visited various research centers
like Adaptive Optics Centre, Centre for Mobile Devices &
Communications, Space Systems, Network Innovation, Applied Science
and Nano Centre etc. The visit has enabled building long term
relationships between DIAT (DU) and NPS. In the Workshop, Hon‟ble

DIAT OPEN SQAUASH TOURNAMENT 2011-12 The DIAT (DU) Open Squash Tournament was conducted from 28
th September 2011 onwards in the DIAT
Squash Court. The tournament received a good response from the students and staff of DIAT (DU) in which 40 participants took part, including ladies and scientists. The finals were played between Lt Cdr V Venu (IN) and Maj Saurabh Choudhary (Army). In a keenly contested match, Lt Cdr V Venu won the championship 3-1 in the best of 5 sets. Mrs. Harish Sharma and Mrs Saurabh Choudhary were declared the winners and runners-up respectively in the ladies event. Maj Gen and Mrs Ravi Saxena, Dean (MT) graced the occasion and distributed the prizes to the winners and runners-up.

mission of collaboration of high quality, defence technology education and research programs. Dr. Prahlada, Vice Chancellor, DIAT (DU) initiated activity to sign the Memorandum of Understanding between Cranfield University, UK and DIAT (DU), Pune.

Library & Information resource sharing etc. The team visited department of Materials Engineering, Computer Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Chemistry & Physics and Library & Information Centre.

DIAT (DU) has entered in to an MOU with Vel Tech Dr. RR & Dr. SR Technical University, Chennai to pool their resources and jointly work on the following R&D and academic activities which will be designed to fulfill the needs of Indian Defence forces. Trust areas include;

A pooja ceremony was organized at DIAT (DU) Temple for Murthi Sthapana of „Radha Krishna‟. The event was held on 6
th October 2011 between
1000 to 1300 hrs. All DIAT (DU) staff attended the ceremony.
VOLLEYBALL MATCH
Upholding the traditions of high standards of physical fitness and regular co-curricular activities, Army Wing organised a volleyball match between Officers and JCOs/OR of DIAT (DU) on 24 Nov 2011 at DIAT (DU) Volleyball Court. The match was evenly poised till the last game and finally won by JCOs/ORs, the final score being 14-25, 25-18, 25-20. The Chief Guest, Maj Gen Ravi Saxena, Dean (MT), distributed the prize to the winning team.

The Valedictory Function of directly recruited Scientists of POINTS-16 was organized on 7

2011 at Dronacharya Auditorium DIAT (DU), Pune. Dr. BN Suresh, Vikram Sarabhai Distinguished Professor and Senior Advisor, Human Space Program, was the Chief Guest for the Valedictory Function. Dr. Prahlada, Vice Chancellor, DIAT (DU), presided over the function. Dr. SK Panigrahi, Programme Director, POINTS welcomed the guest and presented the training report. Dr. Prahlada, introduced the Chief Guest and addressed the gathering. Feedback on conduct of POINTS-16 was presented. Dr. BN Suresh distributed the certificates to the Scientists of POINTS–16 programme and then delivered the Valedictory Address. Dr. R. Prem Kumar, Registrar proposed the vote of thanks. TTC PASSING OUT BASKETBALL MATCH
Keeping the tradition and ethos of the University a Basket ball match was organized between the passing out students of Tank Technology Course – 39 and Rest of DIAT (DU) on 14
th Oct 2011 at the
DIAT Basketball Court. The young officers of TTC set the ground ablaze right from the word go. However, after the first half, experienced players of the DIAT (DU) team over took the lead and finally won the title by 58 – 32.

The invited guest speakers, Dr. CA Murthy from ISI, Kolkata, Dr. Subrata Rakshit from CAIR, Bangalore, Dr. Dipti Prasad Mukharjee from ISI, Kolkata and Dr. Madhuri Joshi from COEP, Pune delivered lectures and shared their work experience with participants. Department of Computer Engineering conducted a one day workshop on “Challenges in Cloud Computing”. The workshop was attended by more than fifty participants from different DRDO establishments, Services and Academic Institutions. Shri VS Mahalingam, Distinguished Scientist and Director CAIR, inaugurated the workshop and delivered lecture on “Defence Perspective of Cloud Computing”. The Vice Chancellor delivered the Presidential address which highlighted the significance of „Cloud Computing‟. Eminent speakers from CRL, HP, Microsoft, ICERTIS and Uniken were invited to delivered lectures in the workshop on the topics of Cloud Computing fundamentals and Technology, Architectures and Platforms of Cloud Computing, HPC and Cloud Computing, Defence Applications of Cloud Computing, Security Issues and Future of Cloud Computing. The Invited talks were followed by a demonstration of “Open-Stack” an Open Source Cloud Computing tool. Department of Applied Physics conducted a CEP programme on „Vacuum Technology‟ for DRDO scientists between 21-25 November, 2011. The participants from DRDO Headquarters and DRDO laboratories such as DMSRDE, NPOL, ASL, and SSPL attended the courses. In the CEP programme the Department tried to amalgamate the topics right from the basics of „Vacuum Technology‟ to its Industrial and Defence applications. Eminent academicians from Pune University, DIAT (DU) and various R&D institutes viz., NCL and ARI delivered the lectures in the programme.

Industrial people as speakers and personalities from Millman Thin Films Pvt Ltd, Oerlikon Balzers India Ltd and SMP Enterprises, which are leading vacuum technology companies in and around Pune were also involved in the conduct of the program. One full day Industrial visit and a half day visit to various labs of DIAT were also arranged. Dr. P.K Khanna inaugurated the function and Prof. S.A. Gangal, Professor Emeritus & ISRO Chair, Pune University distributed certificates during the valedictory function.
VISIT TO DEPARTMENT OF MATERIALS ENGINEERING Shri K. Doreswamy, Deputy Director General, Aeronautical
Quality Assurance, Ojhar, Nasik visited the Department of
Materials engineering on 11th November 2011. The purpose of
the visit was to have collaboration on research areas like
materials for tyres, alloys for fuel tanks, high temperature hoses,
advance composites and structural composites for Sukhoi 30
and MiG Series aircrafts. During the meeting it was agreed that
the young engineers of DGAQA will be encouraged to pursue
their PG degree at Materials engineering Department with
special emphasis on the above mentioned research areas.
