When you enroll in UD’s pathway program, Academic Transitions, you begin your studies in Delaware at the University of Delaware English Language Institute (ELI).
A respected Intensive English ProgramFounded in 1979, the University of Delaware English Language Institute (ELI) is a leader in the field of English as a Second Language (ESL) and is considered one of the top ESL programs in the United States. As an academic unit of the University of Delaware College of Arts and Sciences, we specialize in providing high-quality Academic English training and academic preparation for students who wish to attend a U.S. university.
At the ELI, we focus on more than language development; we also emphasize the importance of creating a complete university experience by becoming involved in campus life, making friends with Americans and with students from around the world, and visiting new places and trying new activities.
Our approach to Academic English training and university preparation has been very successful. In fact, by the end of their second year at UD, former ELI students have better grade point averages (GPAs) than international students who did not attend the ELI!

OUR facultyAll ELI classroom instructors are members of the University’s faculty.
They hold master’s degrees in teaching English as a second language (MA-TESL) or applied linguistics, and have extensive training and experience in teaching English as a second language (ESL). They have enriched the field of ESL through their research, publications and instructional innovation and have authored textbooks that break new ground in the field.
Over the years, many government agencies and universities have turned to ELI faculty for training in better teaching methods.

What is academic transitions?Academic Transitions (AT) is the University of Delaware’s pathway program for conditionally-admitted undergraduate students. If you have an excellent academic background, you can be conditionally accepted to a UD undergraduate program even if you need to improve your English before starting full-time university studies!
By beginning your university experience in AT, you can develop your academic English skills while also earning valuable university credits!
You will also participate in activities that are designed to guide you in your cultural, personal and leadership development so that you develop the social skills needed for success at the university level.
As a conditionally-admitted undergraduate student, you are required to meet your admissions requirements via AT. Once you have met these conditions, you can begin your full-time university coursework and keep the credits you earned while studying at the ELI (for courses in which you earn grades of C+ or higher).

Features of ATCourses related to the student’s majorAT students follow a special track of study with courses and credits that count toward their bachelor’s degree.
Classes for non-native English speakersSome university courses in AT have been designed for students who do not speak English as a first language. This helps students to better understand the course content.
Focus on campus engagement and cultureOne of the most important aspects of AT is its emphasis on a complete student experience through fun and enriching experiences outside of the classroom, such as joining student organizations and participating in activities on campus.
Resources for student successSince AT is a challenging program, we provide many resources to help students to be successful. These include university student and faculty mentors, academic advisors, Academic Success Centers, private tutoring, computer assisted instruction, individualized education plans, and more.
Innovative “Cohort” experienceThis unique curriculum helps students to develop the academic, leadership and social skills needed for success at the university level.
Housing with AmericansAll Pre-AT and AT students are required to live with Americans. Depending on your English level and the time of year in which you begin AT, you may live in varying options such as on-campus residence halls (dormitories), homestay (living with an American family), or the ELI Global Community apartments.
Advantages of ATUniversity creditsAT students can earn up to 28 credits while studying at the ELI — almost the equivalent of the first year of university!
Excellent valueAT students pay a price that is similar to that which other international students pay for one year of full-time university study; however, AT students receive added value in the support that was specially designed for non-native English speakers.
Save time and moneyAT students who take the International First Year option will study Academic English while completing almost all of their first year of university courses. Courses in the AT3 semester are offered at a significant discount.
Academic skill developmentAT students develop study skills, build academic vocabulary, and learn about the expectations of American professors.
Genuine university experienceThe full college experience happens outside of the classroom. AT students live with Americans, join student clubs, participate in campus life, and share their culture with others!

AT was specially designed with two important purposes in mind:
1. To give international students a complete university preparation experience that touches all aspects of their development, including their English skills, social and cultural skills, academic skills and more; and
2. To help these students apply what they have learned by using those skills in their university classes while also enjoying the support of the ELI.
To achieve these important objectives, the ELI has developed a curriculum that prepares students for the academic rigor that is expected at a top-ranked U.S. university, while also helping students to truly engage in campus life.

What University courses can I take?Over 20 academic courses covering a wide variety of subjects are available to students in AT2 or AT3. These courses help you meet requirements for your major and/or bachelor’s degree. Some examples include:

Plans for earning creditsThere are two plans that determine how many university credits you can earn in AT, and how much time you will spend in the program:
• Option #1: Two-semester AT plan: earn up to 16 credits in 8 months
• Option #2: International First Year option: earn up to 28 credits in 12 months.
All students are automatically enrolled in the Two-semester AT plan, with the expectation that they will complete the program in 8 months.
If you do not meet the program requirements at the end of AT2, you will continue studying in AT3 for an additional 4 months in the International First Year option.

ARSC 150: Foundations for English for Academic Purposes (3 credits)An integrated skills class that uses academic content to develop all areas of the student’s language proficiency and to develop background knowledge and study skills necessary to succeed in an American university.

ARSC 151: ELI Cultural Electives (3 credits)Students take elective courses in business, U.S. culture or technology.

ELI ENGL 110: Seminar in composition for AT (3 credits)This is the required English composition course that all UD students must take in their undergraduate program. This course introduces students to different types of university-level academic writing.

Discussion sessions 2 hours/week of instructional support for each UD course; students review the material covered in the UD courses with an instructional assistant.
ARSC 152: AT Capstone Project - Language of the Discipline (3 credits)Students build their language proficiency for their field by learning how to read and analyze books and articles related to their future undergraduate field of study.

Program DurationHow long will it take to complete the ELI? The amount of time you spend in the ELI depends on your English level when you arrive and the effort you give to the program and all of its activities. This table provides an estimate for how long it takes to complete the ELI based on your placement:

Initial placementStudents who wish to join AT must have advanced English skills in order to be eligible for the program. To determine your placement, we use the following tools.
SUBMIT TOEFL or IELTS exam scoreWe strongly recommend that all students submit a recent, official TOEFL or IELTS score to us. Although these scores are not required for you to be conditionally admitted to UD, giving these scores to ELI will help you to know your placement level before you come to Delaware.
If you submit a TOEFL or IELTS exam score before coming to the ELI, you will be placed according to this chart:

You will still be required to take the ELI placement exam when you arrive in Delaware; however, this test will not change your placement. We use this test to determine whether you may need extra support with specific English skills.

Do you want to begin ELI on a different date?No problem! At the ELI, we run programs that happen on a two-month calendar.
Some students find it helpful to enroll in our Accelerated University English Program (AUEP) for at least 2 months before beginning AT. In AUEP, you can practice your English and adjust to the culture at UD.
AUEP courses begin 6 times per year, in January, March, May, June, August and October.

housing optionsAt the ELI, housing is considered one of the most important parts of the experience of students in Academic Transitions. Housing not only helps you practice your English-language skills outside of the classroom, but it is also an amazing cultural experience!
All students in AT are required to live with Americans in one of the following housing options:
• Residence halls (i.e., dormitories) on campus• Homestay: living with American hosts• ELI Global Community: our renowned international
living and learning community
The housing type that is available to you depends on your level in the program and the time of year when you start AT.

PriceStudents are expected to complete AT in 8 months. However, if you do not meet all program requirements after AT2, you will be required to enroll in AT3. In addition, you can choose to take AT3 — even if you have already met requirements in AT2 — because it is such a great deal!

AdmissionsTo participate in AT, you must be academically qualified for admission into the University of Delaware. You must meet all of the same academic requirements as any other applicant to UD.
No TOEFL or IELTS is required for conditional admission to UD.
How long does it take to receive an admissions decision?Once all application documents have been received, the UD International Admissions Team will decide whether or not to offer the student conditional admission to the University. It may take 2-3 weeks to receive an admissions decision.
How to applyApply for admission to UD by completing the Common Application. Submit all required documents. Visit www.udel.edu/apply/international and click on “Admissions Requirements.” Remember, TOEFL/IELTS scores are not required for conditional admission. However, they can help with your placement process at the ELI. See page 16.
