How the promotions process works
Promotion to level B occurs at the Faculty level, through performance management - i.e. the Work Planning and Performance Review (WPPR) process
Automatic consideration for promotion when at the top of level A (step 8)
- Must occur through performance management (WPPR) with the Head of School
Can be considered for promotion before reaching the top of level A - Can occur at any time on request

Overview: What you need to do for promotion1. Talk to your Head of School
• At the start of the year, plan- Appropriate duties for promotion- Objectives for promotion
• Discuss readiness for promotion
2. Make sure that you meet• The qualification requirement• The promotion criteria
3. Arrange a formal time to discuss review of performance and promotion (through WPPR process)
4. Prepare for the meeting• Complete the Application for Academic Promotion to Level B form and forward to
your HOS prior to the meeting• Bring to the meeting:
- Evidence of your qualifications / progress toward qualification- Evidence that supports your achievement of the criteria

Ready for promotion?
Do you meet the qualification requirement?
For promotion to level B
Higher degree (e.g. Masters or equivalent) OR
Significant progress toward a doctoral qualification OR
Appropriate expertise and standing within the discipline and/or
profession
Do you meet the promotion criteria?
Two criteria to be assessed at duties of the current level and the level above

Do you meet the promotion criteria?
The criteria
Evidence of performance at a high level in either Teaching OR Research as applied to level A duties, AND
Evidence of performance at a satisfactory level must be demonstrated in Service AND either Teaching OR Research as applied to level B duties
You must be able to meet BOTH criteria

Teaching & Learning criterion Excellence in Teaching and Learning as applied to duties of the appropriate level
Level Types of teaching duties may include:
EDistinguished scholarship and contribution in teaching and learning at all levels, nationally or internationally. Leadership in maintenance of academic standards AND
DDevelopment of curriculum / programs of study. Significant scholarship in teaching and learning locally or nationally AND
CCourse / year / program co-ordination. Scholarship in teaching and learning AND
BUndergraduate and postgraduate unit co-ordination. Postgraduate lecturing, tutoring, demonstrating, clinical supervision, fieldwork and associated activities AND
AUndergraduate lecturing, tutoring, demonstrating, clinical supervision, fieldwork and associated activities.

Scholarship in Teaching and Learning
All applicants addressing the Teaching and Learning criterion are expected to:
Be engaged in scholarship in teaching and learning; and Demonstrate evidence of peer review e.g. publications, competitive grants and awards
Scholarship or Research? It is important to distinguish between research into and publications on teaching and learning at tertiary level (scholarship), and research into and publications on other areas e.g. secondary school teaching (research)

Research/Creative Works criterion
High quality outcomes appropriate to the discipline in Research/Creative Works as applied to duties of the appropriate level
Level Types of Research/Creative Works duties may include:
EResponsible for research / creative works of a recognised international calibre / a leading authority. Fostering research / creative work of others AND
DResponsible for research / creative works of a recognised national calibre AND
C Supervision of Hons, Masters & PhD research projects AND
B Conducting research / creative works

Service criterion
Demonstrated excellence in Service in line with Curtin’s strategic directions as applied to duties of the appropriate level
Level Types of duties involving service may include:
E Significant service to both the University and the community AND
D Significant service to the University, profession, discipline AND
C Service to the profession, the Faculty AND
B Service to the academic unit and its functioning AND
A Service to own areas of teaching / research

Demonstrating excellence in duties of current level and satisfactory performance in duties of level above

After the meeting: the process
HoS completes their assessment and recommendation and returns a copy to you
HoS submits recommendation to the PVC
Within 2 months of the promotion discussion, the PVC will advise you, the HoS and the Academic Promotions Unit of the outcome
Where promotion has not been approved, HoS will provide written feedback
Where promotion has been approved, the Unit will notify the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic, and the Manager Remuneration Services
Promotion will be effective from the first day of the pay period commencing on or after the date of approval by the PVC
