Pass Along to Members (may be shared with members)Academy Efforts Related to the 2020 Dietary Guidelines

The Academy has made update to the 2020 Dietary Guidelines. The engagement plan provides details on the Academy efforts. There is an ongoing solicitation for input from and member experts on relevant issues and nominated Academy members to the DGAC that resulted in more RDNs than ever before being appointed; established a high-level Dietary Guidelines Collaborative composed of member experts; submitted multiple written and oral comments to the DGAC and the USDA; and met multiple times with officials from the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service agency and its Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion on the 2020 DGAs. The Academy also continues to work with our partners and coalitions to leverage the benefits of speaking with consensus. Recently the Policy, Initiatives and Advocacy team represented the Academy at a meeting with CNPP officials and other signatories of the joint letter to members of the DGAC to specifically discuss the DGAC’s ability to use existing systematic reviews. Continue to look for updates in the Journal, Eat Right Weekly, Public Policy Weekly News, social media outreach, multiple trainings for DPG/MIGs and affiliates, and other communications. Access more information related to opportunities to participate in the public meetings of the DGAC. Notably, the Academy

5

Page 6: Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics › app › uploads › 2019 › 0… · Web viewNutrition professionals in all fields depend on research to provide the most up-to-date nutrition

has been active and vocal for more than a year on the USDA’s decision to limit the topics and questions for DGAC review. In addition to the joint comments submitted to the DGAC on July 22 from AICR and dozens of other groups, the Academy submitted comments on this issue in March 2018. Just last month, we submitted comments on many issues, one of which was the use of systematic reviews. Each of these formal comments was drafted with input from our collaborative member experts and the Academy’s Research, International and Scientific Affairs team.

Looking for a Speaker? Did you know that the Nutrition Services Payment Committee (NSPC) has a Speaker’s Bureau with seasoned and knowledgeable speakers ready to address topics on payment for nutrition services, demonstrating RDN value, and emerging opportunities for RDNs in rapidly expanding markets? Take advantage of this Speaker’s Bureau for an in-person meeting with your affiliate, DPG, or MIG. The NSPC will pay for all travel costs to and from the location of the meeting. Affiliates, DPGs, and MIGs only need to pay for the speaker’s hotel, meals, and honorarium. See the attached flyer to learn more about their offerings. Presentations can be customized to meet your needs.

Alternatively, an NSPC speaker could present one of these topics as a webinar instead. You can also consider asking your Affiliate or DPG Reimbursement Representative to present any of these topics for you.

A limited number of in-person opportunities are available. For more information, contact Paula Shagosh of the Nutrition Services Coverage team at: [email protected].

Public Policy & Advocacy Update (may be shared with members)Academy Applauds NJAND's Efforts in Combatting Newark Water Crisis

Earlier this week, the New Jersey Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics announced its launch of a “virtual water drive” to benefit Newark residents. This initiative was created in response to the elevated levels of lead that have been found in the water supply of Newark, N.J., which has 273,000 residents. All donations will be used for the purchase of water. Donations may be made here.

In addition to launching the virtual water drive, NJAND shared information on free lead screenings available to Newark residents as well as locations where bottled water is being distributed. As the government addresses lead contamination in the Newark water supply, the New Jersey affiliate would

10

Page 11: Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics › app › uploads › 2019 › 0… · Web viewNutrition professionals in all fields depend on research to provide the most up-to-date nutrition

like to help residents reduce the impact of lead exposure. Nutrition can impact lead absorption; while food/nutrition cannot remove lead from the body, it can help prevent further exposure. Three key nutrients – calcium, iron and vitamin C – can prevent lead from being absorbed in the body. In addition, having food in your stomach can help reduce lead absorption, so eating smaller meals and including snacks may be helpful.

The Academy commends the New Jersey affiliate for their efforts on this important issue in Newark and will continue to raise national awareness of the issue.

Tell Congress to Advance Malnutrition Quality MeasuresMalnutrition continues to impact the health of our country and especially seniors. A recent report found that one in three adult hospital patients in the United States are at risk of malnutrition. This remains a public health concern because for malnourished patients, hospital length of stay can be four to six days longer, mortality can be increased up to five times, and readmission rates can be up to 50 percent higher. Despite these staggering numbers, standards of care to address malnutrition have not been systematically implemented across care settings. Take action today – tell Congress to advance malnutrition quality measures!

Op-ed Template Available Academy Spokesperson Angela Lemond RDN, CSP, LD worked closely with the Academy to create the op-ed “Nutrition Is a Science, Not an Opinion”. Angela distributed her op-ed to her local publications and wanted to share her article with affiliates to use as a template/guide to submit their own op-ed on this important issue to their local publications. For any questions, please contact Courtney Doby.

The list now includes revised terms, definitions, and key considerations for: Credentialed Nutrition and Dietetics Practitioner, Evidence-Based Practice, and Evidence-Based Dietetics Practice. The Academy Definition of Terms List is located on the Academy webpage www.eatrightpro.org/scope.

Quality Management-Scope/Standards of Practice Status ReportQuality Management has created an internal quarterly status report outlining the development timelines for revisions of the Scope/Standards of Practice documents. Please see attached the inaugural quarterly report – Scope/Standards of Practice Status Report October 2019.

The report provides an update on all 17 Focus Area Standards of Practice and/or Standards of Professional Performance for RDNs, as well as, the Scope of Practice for the RDN and Scope of Practice for the NDTR, and Standards of Practice in Nutrition Care and Standards of Professional Performance for RDNs and for NDTRs.

Becoming a Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR) – A Career Opportunity Are you interested in expanding your current staff or helping your employees advance themselves professionally? Incorporating dietetic technicians, registered (DTRs) into your clinical nutrition or food service management teams is a benefit to your existing professional staff as well as to your clients/customers. CDR has developed sample position/job descriptions for eight employment categories. Please review them to determine if hiring a DTR is right for your program: https://www.cdrnet.org/opportunities.

Individuals who have successfully completed either an Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) accredited associate degree program in dietetic technology or a bachelor’s degree/Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) program are eligible to take the registration examination for dietetic technicians without meeting additional academic or supervised practice requirements. Once credentialed, these individuals are required to comply with the Commission on Dietetic Registration’s (CDR) professional development/recertification requirements, the Code of Ethics for the Profession of Dietetics and the Standards of Practice. For more information about each education route, please review this fact sheet. DTR informational brochures and videos can be found here: https://www.cdrnet.org/opportunities.

How to Take the Registration Examination for Dietetic TechniciansIf you have an employee who has met these eligibility requirements, but has not yet established eligibility with CDR, they should contact the current program director from their ACEND accredited DPD program to pursue the CDR application process. If they have previously established eligibility to take the examination for dietetic technicians, they would have received an Authorization to Test email from CDR’s testing vendor, Pearson VUE. This email contains information on how to schedule their examination.

Additional Examination Information Candidates approved for registration eligibility are authorized to test for one year at a time. The one-year authorization period is indicated in their Authorization to Test email. If the candidate’s one-year authorization period has expired, they can reauthorize on the CDR website or by emailing [email protected]. If the candidate has misplaced their current Authorization to Test email and would like it to resent or would like to schedule their examination by phone, they can contact Pearson VUE at 888-874-7651. For additional information, please visit: https://www.cdrnet.org/three. Join Clinical Nutrition Management DPG for their November webinar:JUNK Debunk: When Food and Facts Collide

Thursday, November 14th 9 a.m. Pacific (10 MT, 11 CT, Noon ET)

Scientific studies, traditionally sheltered in insulated journals, are now quickly publicized in press releases, posted on Twitter and Face Book, and disseminated on YouTube, TED talks and TV. We are inundated with food and nutrition headlines, recommendations, claims and counter claims asserting the evidence to be based on the latest scientific research. Junk Debunk provides an understanding of how to differentiate between credible and junk science, how and why people make science beliefs based on values and adhere to those beliefs even when challenged by contradictory evidence. Dietitians will be able to help patients, clients and the public sift through science research results and claims to determine what is genuine, credible and beneficial.

Consumers have become increasingly interested in how food is produced and with issues like sustainability, climate change and the environment. This webinar will explore modern agriculture and the innovations now in use to produce an abundant, safe and adequate supply of food to not only feed those in our country but around the world. Academy members must be equipped with science-based information about food production and processing to answer patient, client and consumer questions and to quell their fears about the food they eat that is reinforced through sensationalized media stories.

Thursday, October 39 a.m. Pacific (10 MT, 11 CT, Noon ET)

Speakers: Jill Weisenberger, MS, RDN, CDE, CHWC, FAND and Egil Ove Sundheim

More than eight in 10 Americans fall short of the Dietary Guidelines recommendation to eat 8 ounces of seafood each week, consuming an average of just 2.7 ounces. Lack of knowledge and skills about seafood preparation, along with concerns about safety and sustainability are common reasons consumers avoid this nutrient-rich protein and miss out on seafood’s health benefits. In this webinar, Jill Weisenberger, MS, RDN, CDE, CHWC, FAND, and Egil Sundheim from the Norwegian Seafood Council will help you better understand current hot topics, including safety concerns, address questions surrounding sustainability and the environmental impact of aquaculture and equip dietitians with information and strategies to help consumers confidently prepare delicious seafood at home.
