Why is it that architects and engineers are perceived to be professionals and contractors are seen as something else? Is it licensure?? Is it education? Is it a lack of good public relations work? What it is, is a reality in our society and the built-environment community. Contractors are required to be licensed in over 25 states, and our education is as demanding as any of the other “professionals.” Contractors are not given the respect we deserve and that is an injustice. Contractors on all levels take the risk of making a concept become a reality in bricks and mortar, concrete and glass, wood and steel. Contractors have the responsibility of managing a process and taking the liability for weather, multiple companies, multiple consultants, cash-flow, financing, insurance, bonding and a variety of trades, while trying to run a business themselves. So why is the perception different from the other disciplines in this industry? How do we bridge this gap in perception or perhaps, in reality?

Certification of the professional constructor is one way we can continue to prove who we are and what we can do. Both the American Institute of Constructors and the Construction Management Association of America have created a certification for professionals in the construction industry. Each association has developed a comprehensive certification program and is soliciting individuals to become certified to show the individual’s continued competence and capabilities in this industry, through a process created by our peers and designed by professionals in the certification field. Just as Certified Public Accounts (CPA), Professional Engineers (PE) and Registered Architects (RA) have gone through a rigorous education and a professional “apprenticeship,” Certified Professional Constructors (CPC) and Certified Construction Managers (CCM) have shown to the industry, as designed by their peers, they too are capable, competent and worthy of recognition as a professional in the industry.

There are continued efforts to bring constructor certification to the forefront to owners and contractors alike. The academic world has supported (pushed) the constructor certification effort – it now time for owners and contractors to support (pull) constructor certification into the next level of respect and requirement for the industry. I hope to continue to see growth in the recognition of constructors as professionals. We need your support and the support of all professionals in our industry. I hope to see the recognition that those of us who have proven our professionalism grow in ranks and in recognition from our fellow professionals. With your help, it will happen.

Building Construction Management Education in the Philippines

As the Cebu State College of Science and Technology (CSCST) in the Philippines instituted a new Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineer-ing, an agreement was reached to include all the Construction Manage-ment courses from the Northern Kentucky University (NKU) Construc-tion Management Program. The decision was made to call it a major in Construction Management within the Civil Engineering Degree Program and design it as a five-year degree program. As an Associate Professor in Construction Management at Northern Kentucky University, Paul Cooper served as a visiting professor at CSCST during the time of the program

formation, from November 12, 2007, to July 1, 2008. The Construction Management (CM) major is the first CM Program in the Philippines and is modeled after the program at NKU. Paul has taught for 23 years at NKU and has been the developer, Program Coordinator, and De-partment Chair of the Construction Manage-ment Program during this time. During his sabbatical, he team-taught first year courses with the Civil Engineering faculty.

Three professors were singled out as Outstanding Educators for their top-notch efforts at the NAHB Student Chapter activities at the International Builder’s Show in January 2009. We are pleased to recognize Russ Peterson, Texas A&M University in the junior faculty category; Barney Kahn, Pennsylvania College of Technology, from a two year college; and Patrick Pannell, South Dakota State University, from a four-year university.

Dr. Richard Burt was appointed head of the McWhorter School of Building Science in August 2008 at Auburn University, bringing a strong background in construction and construction education with him. A native of Princes Risborough, England, Richard received his Masters Degree and Doctorate from Texas A&M University.

Dr. Allan Hauck and California Polytechnic State University recently played host to Mr. Gonzalo Tomarelli with DuocUC Chile

for an exchange of ideas and information. You will remember that Mr. Tomarelli participated in our Annual Meeting In July 2008.

Associated Builders and Contractors’ educational affiliate, the Trimmer Education Foundation, presented its 2009 John Trimmer Excellence in Teaching Award posthumously to Professor Michael O’Dea of Purdue University. The award recognizes an outstanding college or university professor in a Construction Management Program. “ABC is pleased to honor the memory of such a strong proponent of the merit shop construction values at the university level,” said Kirk Pickerel, ABC president and CEO. “Professor O’Dea was a dedicated supporter of free enterprise and open competition in the construction industry. We applaud his efforts to help shape the next generation of construction professionals, and it is an honor to recognize him with this well-deserved award.”

During a meeting in California in fall 2008, several of our members had the opportunity to visit with Chuck Swensen and his wife Pat. He reports feeling well and moving forward with his health issues.

Dr. John Murphy has recently accepted the Dean position for the College of Architecture at the University of Texas San Antonio. Congratulations to John!! We are looking forward to having a new neighbor!

Joining John at UTSA is Dr. Yilmaz Karasulu who will be a professor in the Construction Management Program. The San Antonio neighborhood is growing.

As a follow-up on in-ternational studies featured in November 2008 ACCE News, Paul Cooper from Northern Kentucky University has shared his experiences in the Philippines.

An essential part of the Columbus experience, the city’s distinctive downtown districts are full of fun things to see and do — and we will be located in the center of it all. At the heart of the Arena District is Nationwide Arena, the bustling North Market, Huntington Park, and The Cap at Union Station. This area is filled with inviting eateries, exciting sports events and outstanding architecture. The Short North Arts District boasts art galleries, boutiques, trendy nightspots and restaurants. South of downtown are historic German Village and the adjacent Brewery District. On Friday evening we will take a short walk to the Ohio Statehouse, which is right next door, for dinner in the Rotunda. As you can see by the accompanying picture, the Rotunda is beautiful and the Statehouse is rich in history. It promises to be a unique dining experience for all!

Please encourage your colleagues in the Columbus area to attend the Annual Meeting
