Blockchain 101

• Transactions take place every second, from orders and payments to account tracking. Often, each participant has their own ledger and therefore their own version of the truth. Having multiple ledgers is a recipe for error, fraud and inefficiency.

• The blockchain framework is the answer to this problem. Blockchain is a shared, immutable ledger for recording the history of transactions - one that cannot be altered. Blockchain is fostering a new generation of transactional applications, which establish trust, accountability and transparency - from contracts to deeds to payments.

Distributed ledgerBlockchain’s network means that an up-to-date record of the ledger is carried by all participants.

De-centralised

No one party can control the flow of information in the network. All participants have a minority role in the

network, preventing manipulation or fraud.

Updates to a blockchain’s ledger requires consensus from all parties. Once information has been added to the network, the ledger is immutable until everyone agrees that a new piece of

information is verified and can be added.

Tamper-resistant

Smart contracts

Blockchain networks support smart contracts, meaning transactions can occur automatically once real-world

requirements are met. Stakeholders can define the terms of their agreement and the requirements for the transaction to go

through, and then trust that it will execute without fear of failure.

Having one record of information between all parties minimises the opportunity for misreporting and increases the speed with which information can be distributed.

A single store of all information and history for transactions of assets, documents or any other item of value in the network means that all network participants can audit the trail of data.
