What is the Accelerated Learning Program?
•ALP was created and designed to increase the number of students enrolling in AP courses in high school & better prepare students for college• Structured to allow students to take courses
where they show a strength rather than an “all or nothing” approach•Modeled after the Pre-Advanced Placement
program from Texas
Program Details
•Multiple data points used for student placement
• Provide annual opportunities to allow students to enroll in accelerated courses
•Developed annual criteria to ensure students make adequate progress in the content
Program Details
• Review the curriculum for each course in order to increase rigor and promote literacy• Created a full time gifted and talented
teaching position to oversee the program• Developed a monitoring system for
students who are not making progress in order to provide on-time interventions and supports

ALP Entrance Exam
ACCELERATED LANGUAGE ARTS FOCUS
• Accelerated language arts courses will be structured into four quarters each containing 1-2 units of study.
• Students will be required to read and discuss at least 2 major works as well as produce 2 major writing pieces during each quarter.
• Course work will be student-selected and completed outside of class time, students in accelerated language arts must be self-motivated readers
ACCELERATED SOCIAL STUDIES FOCUS
• Advanced placement students in a social studies course are provided a variety of opportunities to investigate deeper in to key ideas and values in human affairs with history and geography as the basis.
• Use of Document Based Questions (DBQs) allows advanced learners to guide themselves to dig deeper into the content by analyzing a variety of primary and secondary historical sources.
• History Fair Day is student led document analysis provides an interdisciplinary approach that embraces literature, language and art to explore patterns throughout history.
• Advanced readings and researched based writing pieces are incorporated throughout the year to encourage the development of analytical, comparative, and critical thinking skills.
ACCELERATED SCIENCE FOCUS
• Will focus on both science and engineering practices (based on the Next Generations Science Standards).
• Lessons at the advanced level will require students to be creative and abstract thinkers as they create models and develop solutions to real-world problems.
• Students participate in the Regional Science Fair
• Classroom will be student-centered featuring lessons based on a flipped classroom. Students will develop and modify their own experiments and lessons.
ACCELERATED MATH FOCUS
• 6th graders that qualify for our advanced Math track are taught 6th grade math standards AND Pre-Algebra standards (7th and 8th grade standards that would not typically be taught in Algebra I). Students will then take Algebra I as 7th graders, and Geometry as 8th graders.
*This pathway has students taking the following in high school: Alg II, Pre-Calculus, Calculus A, Calculus B/C.
• Math placement has high school implications, math is the only course in middle school where the placement impacts high school.
ALP Expectations
• We have a monitoring system for students who are not making progress in order to provide on-time interventions and supports
• If students do not show improvement, a committee will decide next steps based on current data
• ALP courses may not be the best fit for every student
Gifted and Talented Services
• We are the only non-magnet middle school with a full time GT teacher• Multiple service options for GT services plans
(resources classes, seminars, guest speakers, field trips, regional competitions, differentiated instruction, etc.)• Assist teachers with planning, differentiation and
delivering accelerated lessons• Monitor Gifted Student Service Plans (GSSP)
