Registration and Information The registration table and the Showcase information booth are located in the

lobby of the Westin Snowmass Resort & Conference Center. Additionally, an

information booth is located at the Base Village Conference Center. Staff will

be available from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day to answer your questions.

Hotel Checkout If you are staying at the Westin Snowmass Resort, the Viceroy, or the Holiday

Inn Express, please ensure that you are checked out of your room by 11 a.m.

on Wednesday, June 24. You can store your luggage with guest services or

the concierge until you depart.

How to Get Around There are a number of ways you can get to and from the Westin Conference

Center and the Base Village Conference Center. Take the Sky Cab Gondola

(locally known as the “Skittles”) — a three-minute ride that goes between

the two locations. Or you can easily walk between the locations in 10 to 15

minutes, hop on one of the town’s free shuttles, or use your hotel’s shuttle.

The Viceroy is a 15-minute walk to the Westin. For your convenience, maps

of the Westin Snowmass Resort & Conference Center and Base Village

Conference Center are on pages 3-4. For more information, visit one of our

two information booths located in the lobbies of the two conference venues.

Continuing Education Credits Educators who attend the entire Showcase are eligible to receive 15

continuing education credits. To receive your certificate, stop by the

information booth after Edcamp on Wednesday, June 24.

Initiative (CEI) and the Colorado Department of Education (CDE), thank you for taking the time to join your

environment where you can personalize your learning as well as experience greater collaboration and

We are pleased to present Rosalind Wiseman, New York Times best-selling author of Queen Bees and

Wannabes and Masterminds and Wingmen, as our keynote speaker on Tuesday, June 23. Over the course of

the Showcase, several of your fellow educators will also deliver TED Talks-inspired presentations about their

personal experiences as teachers.

Keynote Speakers

Rosalind Wiseman Tuesday, June 23, 9-10 a.m., Mt. Daly Ballroom

Rosalind Wiseman, author of Queen Bees and Wannabes and

Masterminds and Wingmen, is a teacher, thought leader, author, and

media spokesperson on bullying, ethical leadership, the use of social

media, and media literacy.

She is in constant dialogue and collaboration with educators, parents,

children, and teens. A principal speaker at the White House Summit on

Bullying, Wiseman works with thousands of students, educators, parents,

counselors, coaches, and administrators each year to create communities

based on the belief that each person has a responsibility to treat

themselves and others with dignity.

Wiseman’s presentations transcend cultural and economic boundaries in

her appeal to ensure children’s and teenagers’ well-being. Her engaging

and forthright delivery captures audience members and inspires them to

build positive relationships with one another.

Introducing Teacher Ed Talks Both Monday, June 22, and Wednesday, June 249-10 a.m. in Mt. Daly Ballroom CEI is happy to offer Teacher Ed Talks at this year’s Showcase during the

opening remarks on Monday and Wednesday. These are inspired by TED

Talks and are similar to the teacher talks featured at the 2014 San Juan

BOCES Growing Together Summit.

You will hear from teachers who have been identified as inspiring

educators and colleagues. They will share personal stories about how

they became educators, what inspires them, and reflections on the

theme of this year’s Showcase: Accelerating Innovation in Education.

We look forward to celebrating these inspirational Colorado educators!

Intro to Design Thinking Both Monday, June 22, and Tuesday, June 23 1:15-2:45 p.m. in Alpine Springs 1 Preregistration required. Visit the SpaceLab information booth for cancellations.

During this two-day workshop, participants will learn about the stages of design thinking, essential tools, and mindsets, and will explore ways to use design thinking in their classroom.

Expeditions Monday, June 22Noon-2:45 p.m. Meet at the SpaceLab information booth.

Tuesday June 2312:30-2:45 p.m. Meet at the SpaceLab information booth. Preregistration required. Visit the SpaceLab information booth for cancellations.

Expeditions are opportunities to get on-site, learn experientially with local education organizations, and build skills to apply lessons in your classroom or school. A guided nature walk, historical walk of downtown Aspen, visit to the Snowmass Ice Age Discovery dig, and tour of Anderson Ranch Art Center are planned.

Meet-Ups Both Monday, June 22, and Tuesday, June 231:15-2:45 p.m. in Salons C and D Drop by these spaces and stay as long as you wish.

Two Meet-Ups will be offered each day to create space for educators to network, collaborate, and deepen their knowledge about a topic important to innovation in education. The Meet-Ups may be lightly facilitated to ignite sharing but are largely informal drop-in networking spaces.

The Playground Both Monday, June 22, and Tuesday, June 231:15-2:45 p.m. in Salon A Wednesday, June 2410 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in Salons C and DDrop by this space and stay as long as you wish.

Stop by The Playground to explore discovery-based learning activities, instructional experiences, and creative ways to use found objects within your practice.

Outside of The Playground, look for the conference-wide collaborative art project that we will build together.

The Playground is hosted by RAFT.

2015 Edcamp Wednesday, June 24 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in Salons A and B

Edcamps are built on the principles of connected and participatory learning. Educators are invited to come together to talk about the things that matter most to them: their interests, passions, and questions. On the final day of the conference, participants will co-create the agenda and lead sessions based on interest.

Design Build: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Design Thinking Both Monday, June 22, and Tuesday, June 231:15-2:45 p.m. in Alpine Springs 2 Preregistration required. Visit the SpaceLab information booth for cancellations.

In this two-day workshop, attendees will participate in a hands-on exercise crafted to illicit unique responses to a given design challenge — a process nearly identical to one delivered to students at Glenwood Springs High School’s (co)studio design/build class. Teachers will have structured time the second day to brainstorm possible applications within their own classrooms.

Core Conversations Both Monday, June 22, and Tuesday, June 231:15-2:45 p.m. in the Cirque Boardroom Limited to 25 participants. Arrive early and plan to stay the full session.

Core Conversations will call on the expertise and insights from educators, school and district leaders, and education partners to openly discuss some of education’s toughest challenges.

Fireside Chats Both Monday, June 22, and Tuesday, June 231:15-2:45 p.m. in Big Idea Room Drop by this space and stay as long as you wish.

Fireside Chats are opportunities to learn more about a topic, organization, or person within a smaller setting. The guest speaker will introduce a topic of interest and then open the floor to questions. This session will be largely participant-driven, so come ready to engage.

Films and Talks That Inspire Both Monday, June 22, and Tuesday, June 231:15-2:45 p.m. in Castle Peak Drop by this space and stay as long as you wish.

Want to be inspired or find some time to reflect and decompress? We will be highlighting a number of TED Talks and short documentaries that are sure to ignite your motivation or provoke conversations at the conference or back at home.

The SpaceLab Lounge is an environment designed for participants to gather and discuss ideas, collaborate, or do individual work. Think of this as your space; we just provide the free coffee. The SpaceLab Lounge will also highlight innovative classroom furniture and layout options for educators to experience.

SpaceLab Sessions

The Playground is sponsored by Resource Area for Teaching. Resource Area for Teaching (RAFT) provides a “green” professional and collaborative space for teachers to participate in creatIve, fun, and engaging educational ideas and activities. RAFT does this by gathering unwanted items from local businesses and upcycling them into interesting and unique learning activities.

The SpaceLab Lounge is sponsored by OfficeScapes. OfficeScapes is a Colorado-based company with more than 60 years of experience providing furniture, fixtures, and equipment. Its School Furniture Division is headquartered in Colorado Springs and has the largest dedicated PreK-12 school furniture showroom in the region with more than 3,600 square feet.

SpaceLab’s 2015 Supporting Partners


What is SpaceLab? At this year’s Showcase, CEI is launching SpaceLab, a next generation professional learning strategy that will offer educators multiple innovative and engaging learning opportunities in a flexible, self-directed envi-ronment. These 90-minute sessions will be offered every day to provide more collaboration and networking, while creating the space for educators to personalize their learning experiences. While some sessions required preregistration before the conference, most session offerings (or labs) can be selected by participants that day.

The timing of each lab is also flexible, ranging from drop-ins, where participants can stay as long as they wish, to a 60- or 90-minute session during which participants will be engaged with a speaker or focused topic. This flexibility will enable participants to visit multiple labs each day and select options that are most appropriate for the type of engagement and learning they are hoping to achieve. During these labs, educators will be empowered to co-create their experience. For example: If you have met an educator from another region who you would like to talk with further, grab a cup of coffee and chat at The SpaceLab Lounge. Then if you have some time, visit The Playground or stop by a Meet-Up to explore a new topic or go deeper with peers. We are excited to learn and explore with you at this year’s SpaceLab. Fitness Activities Want to take a hike while you are here? How about a morning yoga class? You’re in luck! For more information, visit the Showcase information booth in the lobby of the Westin Snowmass Resort & Conference Center. Morning Yoga: Monday, June 22, from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m., and Wednesday, June 24, from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. Meet at the Showcase information booth at the Westin Snowmass Resort & Conference Center.

Morning Run Club: Tuesday, June 23, from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. Meet in the lobby of the Westin Snowmass Resort and kick off your day with some cardio in beautiful Snowmass.

Collaborative Art Project Art meets engineering, city planning, and sustainability in Uptopia. Put your creativity to the test and try your hand at creating this upcycled utopia. Using an assortment of diverted waste materials, join forces with your fellow Showcase attendees to build a better city. Uptopia will be an ongoing collaborative art project, spanning all three days of the event. Attendees are welcome to make a quick addition while waiting for another activity or spend some of their SpaceLab time building their ideal metropolis.

Take a Break!Research shows that physical activity affects the brain in ways that allow students — both children and adults — to be more engaged and ready to learn. Throughout the conference space, you will see posters with ideas for short physical activities to help energize you for your sessions. Stop by a “Take a break!” poster to rejuvenate your brain, and take these strategies back with you to the classroom in the fall.

Adventures in Snowmass • Miles of scenic biking and hiking trails are accessible from Snowmass Village — and the adventurous can always ride up the mountain. Rent bikes and helmets from Aspen Sports or Surefoot in Snowmass Village. Stop by the SpaceLab information booth for trail maps to nearby excursions.

• Snowmass Village has a great selection of restaurants, shops, and attractions. Hop on the Skittles to travel between the mall and the Base Village.

• If you are interested in spending your SpaceLab time on a self-guided walking tour, stop by the Showcase information booth to pick up a map of Snowmass or the local hiking trails. This time can also be used to find a quiet space and reflect on the conference — using your SpaceLab notebook to document observations, questions, reflections, and thoughts.

CEI is excited to host Edcamp, where participants co-create and build the schedule for the day. These sessions will be created the morning of Edcamp based on participant ideas and feedback gathered over the first two days of the Showcase. CEI will also continue to keep The Playground and The SpaceLab Lounge open, and also host a more traditional session led by a key district partner.

What is Edcamp? Along with other SpaceLab offerings, CEI will host its first Edcamp on the final day of the conference. Initiated by The Edcamp Foundation, Edcamps bring educators together in a connected, participatory learning environment to talk about their interests, passions, and questions. While teachers often lead Edcamps, these sessions are collaborative, inviting people in the session to work together to build understanding by sharing their own knowledge and questions. During the first two days of the Showcase, participants can suggest Edcamp topics based on their interests, passions, and questions. SpaceLab will then co-create the agenda on the final morning of the conference.

Colorado’s Vision for Next Generation Learning

Student OutcomesOur educational system was built more than a half-century ago to fuel an economy that no longer exists. We were good at predicting jobs and preparing students for those jobs. But careers have changed. A growing portion of the job market will be in industries that don’t yet exist.

Meeting the demands of the new economy means changes for schools. We have to ensure that students learn how to think, problem-solve, and work collaboratively. We need to create environments wherestudents can learn to be creative, adaptive, and, most of all, understand how to advocate and apply their unique talents to an ever-shifting job market.

Increasingly, schools are working to provide students with a solid foundation in math, reading, and other academic subjects, as well as other outcomes such as managing time, collaborating with others, taking risks, learning from failure, and making decisions that contribute to communities. In the past couple of years, Colorado educators came together to shape five competencies that support education for 21st century learners.


Academic: Math, Literacy, and Critical ThinkingStudents acquire math, reading, and writing skills and enough content knowledge to make sense of new ideas and information. They reason, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information available to them in the digital age — and use their knowledge to solve problems across a wide range of contexts.

Professional: Time Management, Collaboration, and Lifelong LearningStudents learn to organize their own work to manage time and projects efficiently. They also value others’ ideas and collaborate to improve the overall quality of work.

Personal: Decision-Making That Plays to Individual StrengthsStudents develop self-awareness of their interests and passions as well as of their strengths, weaknesses, and unique abilities. They learn how to work in ways that play to their strengths and interests, how to adjust to situations where they are not naturally comfortable, and how to advocate for themselves in areas where they need help.

Entrepreneurial: Risk Management, Connections, and Learning from FailureStudents develop creative and divergent thinking skills. They make and capitalize on connections among diverse sets of content and build strong personal networks of people they can work with, support, and be supported by. Students learn to manage risk and to learn, grow, and adapt in response to failure.

Civic: Contributing to the Workforce and Our CommunitiesStudents develop a drive to contribute to their local and global communities and economies. They develop the desire to make the most of their unique potential as members of the workforce, the community, and a democratic society.
