AccentureAccenture is a global consulting, technology services and outsourcingcompany that has been experiencing rapidgrowth while it has been changing itsbusiness model to meet the myriad needsof its stakeholders. The company neededto implement a comprehensive financialmanagement solution that could help drivehigh performance and ensure compliancewith changing accounting standards.

To manage its operations in 48 countriesaround the world, Accenture had a numberof legacy finance applications, most ofwhich were connected but not thoroughlyintegrated. It was becoming increasinglydifficult to adapt this architecture toAccenture’s evolving business needs.Accenture wanted to centrally manage itsfinancial systems to improve accuracy in

reporting, meet new business requirementsand to leverage its considerable purchasingpower as a global company.

Accenture drew upon its alliance partnerships as well as its internal poolof talent to implement SAP R/3 v4.6cwith Microsoft enterprise technology.SAP offered an expandable, integratedsolution with most of the featuresAccenture was seeking, and the Microsofttechnology offered a lower total cost ofownership and greater compatibility withexisting Microsoft applications.

Accenture’s experience in implementingmore than 1,600 complex, global SAPsolutions provided relevant expertise forits own implementation—one of thelargest SAP implementations in the services sector. Accenture’s finance teamwas closely involved in the project, whichenhanced the system’s performance and

sped up the transition process onceimplementation was complete. Accenture’sconsulting and solutions teams workedclosely with its CIO and financeorganizations to ensure that a well-trainedteam was ready and the new enterprisesolution met expectations.

With the SAP application in place,Accenture’s finance organization canimplement change centrally rather thanhaving to go through hundreds of separateapplications. The organization has greaterinsight into Accenture’s accountingprocesses, offering new opportunities toidentify savings and efficiencies. Finally,with its financial management system inplace, Accenture is poised to integratefinance with other critical business functions, moving the global companytoward high performance with its globalapproach to enterprise management.

Akzo NobelPolymerChemicals(ANPC)As the global economy struggled in recentyears, Akzo Nobel Polymer Chemicals(ANPC)—a global supplier of organic peroxides, metal alkyls and other polymerization catalysts—was workingaggressively to achieve high performancethrough cost savings, improved efficienciesand growth.

First, ANPC needed to achieve savingsfrom its selling, general and administrativeoperations. Second, ANPC sought improvedbusiness performance: increased information management service levels,shared risk, variability, scalability andinnovation to support business growthwithout sacrificing current production.

ANPC turned to Accenture to leverage itsdeep SAP skills and experience to assumeapplication management of its business-critical SAP systems. Accenture now provides the management for ANPC’s SAPsystems, including SAP R/3, SAP BusinessInformation Warehouse, SAP CustomerRelationship Management and SAPAdvanced Planner and Optimizer.Accenture also delivers performanceimprovements for the business units’ SAP-related projects.

Accenture’s SAP application managementis now delivering Akzo Nobel PolymerChemicals improved efficiencies and predictable costs, enabling high-performance results. Accenture brought an enhanced testingmethodology to help ensure financialresults were accurate and the system wasclean of erroneous postings well beforeAstraZeneca would have to report year-end financial results. During the testingphase, a finance verification checklist

was run daily to target errors and exposereconciliation issues that were generatedfrom transactions across the variousprocess teams. The year-end close processwas graphed out sequentially across theentire organization, and mock closes wereexecuted several times. Accenture alsohelped implement a change managementinitiative to secure buy-in for the enhancedfinancial testing across the project.

Accenture helped AstraZeneca beatexpectations with the data in its enterprisesystem reconciled by 4:00 p.m. onJanuary 1, 2005. This allowed the clientample time to gather its reporting packagefor the United Kingdom parent byJanuary 7, 2005. The event was hailed asa major success for the company.

BC HydroBC Hydro is one of North America’slargest electricity generators, transmittingmore than 50,000 megawatts annually to1.6 million customers in British Columbia,Canada. The group is consolidatingapproximately 80 legal entities world-wide, which deliver relevant financialdata to the Munich headquarters on amonthly basis. After a wave of mergersand acquisitions, HVB Group’s financialand IT environments experienced a dramatic increase in complexity.

Consistent and accurate information couldonly be obtained after a labor-intensiveand time-consuming reconciliation effort,making it difficult for HVB Group to delivertimely reports and meet reporting deadlines. REFERREFER is responsible for building, maintaining and running the Portugueserailways infrastructure network. As partof these activities, REFER producesdetailed technical and engineering documents specifying railway infrastructure designs and lifecycle management—from the first draftthrough reviews and approvals until finalarchive—to provide a well-documentedtechnical history of the national railways.

REFER wanted to guarantee informationintegrity and access by ensuring its documents are properly classified andarchived, and document versions are

correctly managed in a single corporaterepository. State of HessenIn the global race for investors and innovative workplaces, the State of Hessenwants to succeed. A flexible, cost-effectiveand customer-oriented administration isa crucial factor in the economic competition. To reach this goal, theHessian government is implementing SAPR/3 to restructure all statewide accountingand HR processes.

The State of Hessen plays a leading rolein the German public sector by pursuingconsequent and extensive changethroughout the whole administration.Success depends on moving from cash-based to accrual accountancy within thegiven legal framework, implementing SAPR/3 in 800 agencies from nine ministriesand transferring the needed knowledgeto 16,000 end users.

Accenture supports the State of Hessen inmanagement, conception, implementation

and operation of the project. The designof new accounting and HR processes isbased on the development of a state reference model consisting of standardized processes and methods foraccounting and HR for the whole stateadministration. WoodsideEnergy LimitedWoodside Energy Limited, Australia’slargest oil and gas producer, operates theNorth West Shelf, the Laminaria andLegendre offshore oil and gas fields. In1997, Woodside implemented an SAPenterprise system, upgrading in 2000 and2001. Woodside sought maximum valuefrom its SAP investment, looking to reduceits application management and development costs, improve service quality,boost workforce skills and expand itsbusiness regionwide.

Woodside needed a supplier that wouldfocus on the company’s requirements. Itneeded the right supplier and the right

model to achieve the company’s key aimsof reducing costs while simultaneouslyimproving service.

After a competitive selection, Woodsidechose Accenture based on its deep SAPskills and global implementation record.Accenture and Woodside entered into aco-sourcing agreement, establishing anSAP applications management and development center, Adesi, in Perth.Adesi delivers SAP applications management to Woodside including Level1, 2 and 3 support and BASIS, enhancements and development projects,and service-account management.Additionally, Adesi operates as a multi-service client center, supporting WesternAustralian, Asian oil and gas, and otherAccenture clients.

In its first year, Adesi transitionedWoodside’s SAP systems, maintained thesupport and development functions andmet its high-performance financialexpectations. “Adesi has transformed theway we approach our SAP managementcapability needs. It has increased ouroperational efficiency and reduced ouroperational costs, and will provide similaropportunities for other customers of theCentre of Excellence,” said AndrewMaiden, Woodside’s director of BusinessServices. Moreover, the co-sourcingarrangement is deepening Woodside’s SAPknowledge and broadening the capabilityof its people. With new customers,Woodside is achieving its SAP Centre ofExcellence vision—servicing companies inAustralia and across Asia Pacific.
