2017 was another very busy but highly successful year for
Auburn Girls’ High and it is due to the dedication and hard work
of both our students and our staff.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those
involved in each and every success we have had this year both
big and small. We would also like to thank our parents and
carers for encouraging their daughters and wards to participate
in the many activities and opportunities provided for their
children. Below is a photo taken of the 25 students who took
part in the Schools Spectacular which is just one example of our
students and staffs’ dedication and commitment.

Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Students, As I reflect on the achievements of our students and our school over 2017 I am once again incredibly proud that we have
achieved so much progress, working together with our staff, students, parents and the community. We have enjoyed another successful year where enhancing the educational, academic, social and wellbeing outcomes for our students,
remain the core business of the school and the focus for all decision making.
In 2018 students will need to
wear school track pants for PE and Sport
2017 has been a year of reflection of both our successes to date and planning for the next
three years with the 2018-20 AGHS Strategic Plan. We have been reflecting and measuring the progress achieved with each of our three School Plan Strategic Directions: Engagement for Learning; Excellence in Teaching and Inclusivity for Learning. The Tell them from me
Survey data over the last 3 years reveals that students are increasingly satisfied with and engaged in school life and learning. This semester we have been forward planning and developing our plan for the next 3 years. We have completed our consultation process to
identify the priorities and projects to be implemented as part of the 2018-2020 school planning cycle. The school is now in the process of drafting the 2018-2020 School Plan following the school and community consultation that has taken place over the last two terms. I am looking forward to sharing the draft School Plan
with the school community early next year for final feedback prior to its publication at the end
of Term 1 2018. Principal’s Merit List Morning Tea Each term I receive a Merit List, a list of
names of students who have: attendance of 95% or more; all absences are explained; are always in uniform; and whose engagement and behaviour is worthy of commendation. I am very proud to say that the following students have appeared on the AGHS Merit List
for each of the four terms gaining a Principal’s ROSE GOLD Merit Award. Congratulations to our wonderful students and their parents.

Safe Holiday and Thank You I would like to take this opportunity to thank
our parents of Auburn Girls for their support of the school throughout the year. I am especially grateful to our P&C President Mrs
Afzala Nazir, for her contribution and for being such an integral part of our school.
I would like to acknowledge our wonderful teachers, and staff at Auburn Girls who have
continued to work tirelessly to support our students this year and made successes
possible. My thanks to all our dedicated and
hardworking teachers who have taken on additional roles and responsibilities that
provide our students with many amazing opportunities, curriculum, co-curriculum and wellbeing that make a well-rounded
education.
My thanks to our School Captains, Prefects, Sport Captains and Student Representative
Council Leaders I would like to express my appreciation for their leadership on behalf of the school.

School Sports Uniform In line with parent and community
expectations, we are a full uniform school and continue to improve our standard of school uniform
available to students. From 2018, all students will be expected to
wear the correct sports uniform on Tuesdays and for PE lessons.
There has been extensive consultation with students, parents
and staff over the last two years to ensure that the new uniform looks smart, is comfortable and
affordable.
Students may wear the new sports uniform or the old sports uniform.
Black tracksuit pants, with or
without brand logo or black tights ARE NOT UNIFORM.
There has been extensive information about this change
throughout the year with students, with the P and C and recently a
letter has been sent home. Uniforms are available at OZ
Fashions. Student assistance can be sought from Mrs Matta as
required.

Deputy Principal’s Report – Years 7 and 9 Term 4 has been filled with many opportunities for students to showcase their talents and make positive connections with the wider community.
LEARN, LEAD AND SUCCEED
Auburn girls learn, lead and succeed!
These powerful words are Auburn Girls High
School’s core values as endorsed by students,
parents and students.
To Learn – students need to be engaged as
active learners in the classroom and beyond.
This means always being equipped with the
correct books and participating with purpose
and focus. Asking and answering questions,
researching and consolidating understandings.
Learning is fun and it is a lifetime pursuit.
To Lead- as we learn and expand our
understandings of ourselves, others and the
world we become confident and articulate. We
can guide and mentor others and we can
identify issues and convey ideas to others. We
can debate and persuade to make a difference
to our world.
To Succeed- our learning allows us to be
valued by our society; you are the doctors,
academics, scientists, designers, architects of
the future.
At Auburn Girls High all teachers work
together to create vibrant and engaging
classrooms for students to maximise their
learning.
Mental Health Week- Auburn Girls High School. Auburn Girls High School has wellbeing at the heart of all it does. October was Mental Health Month and at
AGHS the school organised a week of workshops to explore issues of wellbeing and provide explicit teaching of resilience and self-esteem. The school provided not only student workshops but also parent and staff professional learning opportunities.
The focus of the week has been to:
1. build resilience and consolidate understandings of the benefits of positive psychology on personal wellbeing.
Some workshops included: • gratitude letter writing, • identifying personal strengths
• volunteering and fundraising for Garvan Institute, • cyber citizenship • healthy eating • fundraising for breast cancer research – Garvan
Institute • random acts of kindness with staff • staff meeting
• stress management • avoiding risks • being strong and confident • student perspective on personal mental health
journey • hope and optimism
• Positive Psychology for parents with our academic partner Dr Paula Robinson
2. promote local help seeking agencies in the
local community to our students, staff and parents.
Many local organisations presented workshops to our
students such as: • Auburn Youth Centre • Youth Off the Streets • Headspace Parramatta • Police from • Youth Command Auburn, -Australian Martial Arts
Academy
• Dooleys Students, parents and community groups valued the Mental Health Week. They also value the school’s on-going commitment to enhance the wellbeing of all stakeholders.
Students have enjoyed the interactive workshops, community groups have consolidated partnerships with the school and teachers and parents have better understandings of Positive Psychology and simple but effective interventions that they can use in their family life and classrooms to strengthen young people’s self-
esteem, resilience and confidence to effectively meet the challenges of life.

received their report during the school day to be read that evening at home. Reports not issued due to student absence will be posted to home addresses.
I wish every student, parent and carer a safe and enjoyable vacation period. Next year Mrs Jackman will be taking over my role as Deputy Principal as I will be on extended long service leave. Years 11 and 12
As we come to the close of another productive
year at Auburn Girls High school, I would
especially like to congratulate Year 12 2017 on
the completion of the Higher School Certificate.
Students will be able to assess results on line
through NESA from Thursday 15th December.
Official records are posted through to students’
home addresses in January. Please check the
NESA website for details.
Year 11 students on the other hand have started
the Higher School Certificate course and they will
have completed one whole term of the Year 12
course work this term including the completion of
the first of many assessment tasks.
I am aware that there are already a number
of girls who have received course non-completion
warnings (N-warnings) for their HSC courses. The
satisfactory completion of a course requires
Principals to have sufficient evidence that the
student has:
• followed the course developed or
endorsed by NESA
• applied themselves with diligence and
sustained effort to the set tasks and
experiences provided in the course by the
school
• achieved some or all of the course
outcomes.
Students may receive N-warnings for any of the
above three reasons. It is very important that
students work with their teachers to redeem
these warnings. All students are now aware of
the importance of attendance, completion of
assessment tasks and school work as well as
developing and maintaining resilience and a
positive attitude in their final year of school. They
have been a wonderful senior cohort so far.
A reminder that sports afternoon is no longer
mandatory and Year 12 students are able to sign
out of the school at the beginning of lunch every
Tuesday. From next year if your daughter has a
study period at the end of the day she can also
leave early to study at home if she wishes and on
Friday afternoons from 1.35pm. However, your
daughter must have a good attendance record
and arrive at school on time to earn these
privileges.
I would also like to take this opportunity to
acknowledge the following Year 11 students for
reaching the third tier of our Positive Behaviour
Reward initiative.
These students have met the criteria of:
• 95% or greater attendance.
• All partial absences explained (or only one
unexplained partial)
• Always in uniform
• No Negative Incidents
As their award they each received a $10
canteen voucher and 2 Principal Gold Awards.
Also, congratulations to Monira Naim Year 11
for winning the Auburn Review Citizenship
Award. (See photo below.)
I would also like to take this opportunity to
thank Ms Scariot and Ms Garvey. They have
been fantastic Year Advisers to Years 12 and
11 respectively and are always looking at ways
to involve our students and to look after their
wellbeing.
Finally, after what has been a most dynamic
year, I wish everyone a safe, enjoyable and
relaxing summer break.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS
Rosanna Liang – Year 10
Sport NSW sponsors the annual NSW Sports Awards.
The Sports Awards have been running since 1994,
and serve to celebrate the achievements of athletes,
coaches, officials, administrators and organisations on
an annual basis.
At the NSW Sports Awards for 2017, Gala Dinner held
on Monday 27 November 2017 at Rosehill Gardens,
Rosanna Liang’s goalball team won the award for the
‘Team of the Year - Disability.’

Our School Spectacular
On Monday 18th September, 25
students accompanied by Miss
Kavo and Miss Fagan attended
the Opera House for the annual
‘Our Spectacular’ showcase.
With costumes in tow, hair in
noodles and lots of excitement,
we left Auburn Girls High School
at 9am for a 14 hour day
rehearsing, preparing and
FINALLY performing on the
Opera House Stage!
This year’s theme was ‘Around
the World’. Each school
represented a country and a
cultural dance. Auburn Girls
represented Brazil, performing a
fusion of dances relative to the
Rio Carnival Festival. Colourful
costumes were complimented
with the cha cha, samba and
salsa and the song ‘Samba Do
Brazil’.
We would like to congratulate
the girls for their outstanding
commitment throughout the
year preparing, and of course,
a spectacular performance on
the night!

be so proud of how amazingly
they represented our school and
its talent!

POSITIVE PARENTING
As part of Mental Health Week on 18 October
our parents attended a workshop with Dr Paula
Robinson from Positive Psychology Institute.
Parents were given a range of practical
strategies to use at home to build resilience and
encourage positive behaviour in their families while
they take good care of themselves.
Dr. Robinson is our academic partner and has
worked with both staff and students in 2016 and
2017.
WHITE RIBBON EVENT
On the 22 November our parents attended the
White Ribbon Assembly led by the School Captain and
Vice-Captain where they spoke about the history of
the White Ribbon Day and said:
“In 1999, the United Nations General Assembly
declared 25th of November the International Day for
the Elimination of Violence against Women. Each
year, men and women are called to wear a white
ribbon or wristband as a visual symbol of their
commitment and oath”.
This event is highly valued by our school
community and this year we were honored to have Mr
Murat Dizdar, The Deputy Secretary, and School
Operation and Performance NSW Department of
Education.

Annual Fashion Show
The Annual Fashion Showcase was held on Tuesday 28th
November 2017. The Year 9 Textiles students presented
their Spanish Inspired Apparel which they individually designed and created.

Library News
One door shuts and another
opens
“A book is like a door. You walk through the
cover and you don't know what you're going
to find.” So said Australian author of fantasy
Emily Rodda, whose books are in our library
at AGHS.
This year an especially large number of
students walked through the covers of an
especially large number of books and
completed the NSW Premier’s Reading
Challenge. They ‘escaped to everywhere’,
which was the theme for this year’s Book
Week. We celebrated their completion of the
PRC by inviting them through our library
doors to our Book Week’s official opening of
the library and celebration of completed
renovations to receive Principal’s Gold Awards
and congratulations from our principal, Ms
Tsoutsa, then cake.
Mr Brackenbury entertained the crowd, which
included book characters such as Ms
Mahmoud, who had returned from the Land
of Oz, with the ancient history of the library
and its evolution to its present state. Also
invited were students who have participated
in the library’s Biggest Reader Challenge this
year as well as the librarian's weekly Book
Club members. Winners of the Book Week
poster competition also earned Principal’s
Gold Awards and prizes, as did winners of the
library’s writing competition for Literacy and
Numeracy Week.

Careers This has been an incredible term for our girls at AGHS in terms of their future career planning.
Our graduating Year 12 students have already
been successful in gaining a number of early offers to university. A few positions were gained with Macquarie University and University of Wollongong as a direct result of significant roles in leadership, community or extra-curricular activities like the Duke of Edinburgh. Mid November then saw confirmation of another 37 early offers through the School Recommendation Scheme
(SRS) to Western Sydney University and Macquarie. HSC results will be released on Thursday 14 December and there may be offers based on high results in associated subjects. After the ATARs are released the following day, further offers will be made on 21
December. There will then be two additional rounds in
January and another two in February. I have encouraged our girls to accept all offers

Our Year 10 students have just completed a
week of Work Experience, trialling a number of careers and gaining a better understanding of the world of work. We have had students in Art Galleries, Fire Service NSW, Australian Museum, Taronga Zoo, Vet clinics, Design studios, Law firms, Primary schools and Child Care Centres, as well as many in a variety of retail stores. The overwhelming feedback from students, visiting
teachers and host employers has been positive, with a number of students now saying this is a potential career
path. However a few did say they found it hard to cope with long hours and now plan to stay at school to complete Year 11 and 12 so they don’t have to work in a job that requires being on their feet all day!
Congratulations to everyone for the fantastic effort made this week – I am very proud of our girls.
TRANSITIONS
This term 20 students in Year 9 participated in SAP Work Inspirations and 16 students from year 10 completed a Certificate 1 in Financial Literacy, both programs running over two full days. The girls showed dedication and maturity throughout the programs.
Selected students from years 10 and 11 were also given the opportunity to participate in the Vocational
Industry Pathways (VIP) program at Bankstown TAFE. Students were given information of various course options, participated in hands- on activities and provided with a beautifully catered lunch. This was followed up a week later by visits to Industry workplaces, so they could

English/History Faculty
presented the negative side of the debate, and awarded Smiths Hill High School as the winners of the debate.
Later on, we walked to a nearby food court
where we had our lunch and then went back to Auburn Girls High School and were dismissed.

Debating Wrap Watching the Debate Finals
On Friday the 10th of November 2017, the Year Seven and Eight debating teams along with several other students departed from Auburn Girls High School on an excursion to watch the Year Nine and Ten State Finals in the hope of learning more about debating by watching the two finalist teams debate.
Once we arrived at our destination, Everest Theatre, Seymour Centre, in which the debate would be held, we took our seats towards the front of the
theatre and skimmed through a small booklet explaining the debate topics and finalists. As we finished, the two teams came onto stage. The debate topic and speakers were introduced and the debate
began. When the debate came to an end, the adjudicators presented the flaws of both teams and

Support Faculty
Welcome to the families and friends of Support Unit at Auburn Girls High school.
I cannot believe that we are coming to the end of another school year. 2017 has been an exciting, challenging and extremely rewarding year.
I have enjoyed working with our staff, students, parents and the wider community. Students will now have received their school reports, which will give parents a snap-shot of their girl's achievement, but also provide students with tips and ideas of how to improve and move forward.
As always, our fantastic Support students
deserve the greatest thanks for our successful year.
We are so proud of the many achievements during 2017. I also thanking them for their cooperation, the positive attitude and school spirit displayed by our students make this a unique Auburn Girls High School. Teachers and visitors constantly praise their maturity and responsible behaviour.
We have many smiling faces around the Support Unit every Tuesday. Insp!re Café has made exceptional debut into the school and staff can’t wait for their expertly made Cappuccino, Cupcakes and Soup.
On Monday 23rd of October, a number of
students from support unit went to Vision Valley Camp for quality outdoor education and a memorable teaching and learning experience. With strong teamwork, rich motivation for success and plenty of hard work to face their fears our girls
enjoyed most of challenging activities such as flying fox, canoes, archery, high robs and water slide. The
girls showed their never give up attitude and were constantly praised for their maturity, manners and fun-loving attitude.
Thank you to all families who have finalised school contributions and subject fees. If you are still to do so, payment can be made via Payments on Line on the school website. These contributions
make a real difference to the resources and facilities they enable our school to provide for our students.
Orientation Day On 15th and 23rd of November incoming Year
7 students and their parents attended Orientation
Days for support unit. We introduced the subjects’ students will studying at high school and toured our school with their 2018 Peer Support leaders and
parents attended an information session. Morning tea was provided to the parents and students.
Finally, I would like to thank all Support staff for their efforts this year. I would like to also wish our staff, students and school families a safe and festive Christmas break and I look forward to work

PDHPE Faculty
It has been a busy term within the PDHPE department with lots of events and excursions
occurring. On Friday 15th September, all of Year 7 was invited to Auburn PCYC to participate in
a sports activities day. This was a fantastic opportunity for students to try new activities and
work together with their peers. All students had the chance to participate in a gymnastics
workshop, which involved trampoline skills and a gymnastics circuit where the girls were guided
through cartwheels, forward rolls and the parallel bars. Students were also given the
opportunity to participate in European Handball, Basketball and Oztag. It was fantastic to see
everyone having a go in each of the sports and activities. At the end of the day, 3 students
were awarded for their participation and great sportsmanship. I would like to congratulate
Maryam Fahmi, Badia Baghdadi and Dia Chaker who were each awarded with a Basketball
for the effort.

Mathematics Faculty
The Mathematics faculty has had a
busy and productive year with a variety of
activities and events organised to promote
the importance of Mathematics. There
were many highlights:
Year 9 Stage 5.1 (both 9LM and
9CM) had an assessment task where they
took on the role of a teacher. In groups,
they prepared a PowerPoint presentation
and worksheets on an allocated topic.
They provided examples on the board and
gave out a quiz. Students found the task
valuable and enjoyable.
7MM, 7LM and 7CM are working on Rates
and Ratios. In one activity they created
recipe bookmarks where they wrote down
their favourite recipes and adjusted the
measurements to cater to different
numbers of people.
7SM made jelly during a practical lesson
this term as part of the ratio topic and
enjoyed eating them. Photos below:
Similarly, Year 8 presented topics
in Mathematics where groups planned
teaching strategies, activities and
assessments for their allocated topic and
delivered a lesson to the class.

Year 7 and 9 prepared and sat for
NAPLAN this year and we saw
improvement in our NAPLAN results. It
was pleasing to see the value added
results for our students in Year 9
Numeracy. Two thirds of our students
achieved greater than or equal to
expected growth. We achieved the best
results our school has ever had. As can
be seen from the table below, and graph
to the right, 95% of Mathematics Stage
5.3 students achieved a Band 8 or above.
No student in Year 9 Numeracy achieved
a band 5 or below the national minimum
standard. I’d like to thank students, staff
and parents for their effort and support
in this wonderful achievement. We look
forward to our continued growth and
excellence in Mathematics.
Year 10 will be going to Luna Park on
8th December for a Welfare-run excursion and
they will be involved in numeracy activities
that include doing calculations on speed, time
and force. It should be a fun filled day.
Once again this year, the Mathematics
International Competitions and Assessments
for Schools (ICAS) run by the University of
NSW was a great success amongst students
that participated. This year we achieved three
distinctions, six credits and two merit awards.
We are very proud of our students and
encourage many more students to participate
next year.

LOTE Faculty
This term the HSC Mathematics Extension
2 class is running at Auburn Girls High
School. Students are enjoying having
access to both Ms Hijazi and Mr Kim as
they are team teaching this class. This
gives the students and staff the
opportunity to develop and learn the
complex content within this course.
At Auburn Girls High all students have had
free access to Maths Online. This is a great
resource for students as it includes
teaching videos, worksheets and topic
tests. This encourages independent
learning where students can revise at their
own pace and in the comfort of their
home.
Our Mathematics after school
tutoring program continues to be a
success. It runs on Monday and Thursday
from 3:15 – 4:15 pm each week. The
tutors are ex-students from AGHS who are
studying at university. Students can ask
questions on any topic they are currently
doing or where they have difficulty. If you
would like to attend please see your Maths
teacher or Ms Vij in the Mathematics
Faculty.
My staff had professional
development and are now preparing
programs and resources for the new Stage
6 Mathematics Standard course for 2018.
Term 4 also saw Year 12 students
sitting for the HSC. The Mathematics
faculty wishes all students the best in their
academic attainments.

On Wednesday the 13th of September, Year 8 Turkish class went on an excursion to Sahara Turkish Cuisine at Parramatta as we studied a unit on Eating and Drinking. We
walked from school to Auburn Station and we took the train to Parramatta. We arrived at the restaurant early. A waitress showed us to
our reserved seats. The manager introduced himself and explained what we were going to eat for lunch. We had Adana kebab, lamb shish, chicken shish and four types of
homemade fresh dips with warm Turkish pide bread. After the delicious meal we were served Turkish apple tea. We enjoyed listening to Turkish music in the background while we ate.
The restaurant was packed after a bus
load of customers and business people arrived for their lunch. The manager took a group photo of our class and thanked us for being respectful and polite. It was a lovely day out on an excursion. From: Dilara Ayse Murt & Dilara Sivri (8TU)

MAKING ONLINE PAYMENTS
It is now possible for parents to make online payments to the school for amounts owing for students, via a secure payment page hosted by Westpac. Payments can be made using either a Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card, and can be made via computer, tablet or mobile phone. The payment page is accessed from the front page of the school’s website by selecting:

Items that can be paid include voluntary school contributions, subject contributions, excursions, sales to students and creative and practical arts activities (these include band, drama and dance). There is also a category called ‘Other’ this to cover items not covered in the previous headings. ‘Other’ can be used to make a complete payment of a school invoice.
These details are entered each time you make a payment as student information is not held within the payment system.
There is also the option to enter the Student Registration Number and
Invoice number if you are aware of them, these are optional fields OR
there is also the option to enter the Student Registration Number and Invoice number these are not used at our school, please leave blank.
This is a secure payment system hosted by Westpac to ensure that your credit/debit card details are captured in a secure manner, these details are not passed back to the school.
You have the ability to check and change any details of the payment before the payment is processed. Receipts can be emailed and/or printed.
Details of the payments are passed daily to the school where they will be receipted against your child’s account. As a receipt has been issued from the payment page a further receipt will not be issued by the school.

READING
Parents and teachers think that children who are mucking up in class or who have lost interest in schoolwork are simply de-motivated when they could actually have a problem with reading.
• Children often attach reading and writing to school work only, whereas everything going on
around them is virtually dependent on the ability to read and write.
• Even though you may not feel confident in your understanding of high school subjects, helping out with your child's
homework – and showing them you're interested in it – makes a big difference to how they can improve their reading and writing.
• Encourage your child to read/use any kind of material on topics that
interest them —websites, books, social networking
sites etc – and don't pressure them immediately to then pick up on their school work. Be patient.
• Let the school know you are committed to helping your child improve their reading skills.
• If you struggle with reading or writing, know there is a community of support out there to help you.
• If you struggle with reading or have a language background other than English, use the help that's offered
through the school and local community centres. Don't be scared to help your child – just being there with them, even if you're struggling together, will provide them with
valuable support to help overcome difficulties
