Dear Parents/Guardians: Success In Learning – A Team Effort It is hard to believe that this school year is coming to a close. This month will again see many learning activities and initiatives that will continue to promote growth and the celebration of community. The success of children at Mulvey School is a team effort. It is the investment of each person involved in the life of a child that comes together to make a difference in a child’s knowledge, skills and confidence. Many of you have stopped by and have expressed your appreciation for the caring, and extra enthusiasm and dedication ☺ that your child’s teacher has demonstrated.

I too, would like to thank the entire Mulvey Educational Team for their commitment this year, and to their holistic approach in educating your children. Thank-you to all parents, guardians, grandparents, families, friends, caregivers and volunteers for supporting our wonderful Mulvey students throughout the year. Together we have made a difference on behalf of each and every Mulvey student. To those students who are moving on, continue the commitment to life-long learning that we have strived to instill in you during your stay at Mulvey School. Kindergarten - Ms. H. Penman

In May we continued to focus on our camping theme. We looked at a variety of maps and made our own maps to help us find the perfect camping spot. Students each made a pair of binoculars which we used on a nature walk. We took our writing journals outside with us to record what we saw on our walk. Everyone made their own camping books about what to do when you go camping. We discovered what amazing authors and illustrators we all are when we took turns reading our books to the class. Students also practiced reading their camping book to Grade 8 students from Westgate School. We were very fortunate to have the students come and share picture books that they created as a project with us. Our students were very engaged and enjoyed having visitors. We are looking forward to the month of June, especially for our final field trip of the year to the Assiniboine Park. Students will participate in a full day of outdoor fun on Thursday, June 11

th. There

will be no Kindergarten classes the following day on Friday, June 12

th. It has been a wonderful year in

Kindergarten!

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM

This past month students in room 2 investigated farms. We read stories and sang songs that helped us to learn about all the animals on the farm; the sounds they make, what they give us and the different words to name the male, female and baby animals. The high point of our farm study was our trip to Six Pines Farm where we were given a chance to ride a horse, go on a hayride and feed a calf. We were very proud of Room 2’s behaviour on this field trip. Besides farm topics we are working on recognizing and writing our last names and talking about numbers and what comes before and after. In June we hope to continue to learn and have fun with our numbers and letters. It has been such a pleasure facilitating your child’s learning this year in Nursery. Wishing you a summer filled with sun and fun and book reading!

Nursery P.M. - Ms. E. Yanofsky

May was a great month! The students really enjoyed the

Farm and have been very engaged learning about this

theme. The students created very beautiful Farm books

while also making a paper bag cow puppet. This has

been a fantastic learning year for the students. During

June the students will continue to improve their Math and

Language Arts skills while also learning through

exploration time. The students will be reminded how to be

safe during the summer and how to take care of their

environment. Thank you to all the parents for being

supportive in their child’s learning. Have a great, safe,

and enjoyable summer and see you in the fall!!

Grades 1 & 2 - Ms. E. Yanofsky & Mrs. C. Abrenica

In Language Arts and Social Studies the students are going to review reading and writing skills. We are going to talk once again about the importance of being a good member of the community and making good choices to be more safe and happy. In Math and Science the students are also going to review mathematical skills as well as concepts that may become their tools when they go to Grade 2 and 3. Please help your child to practice reading, writing, and numbers between their playtime. Remember the 6 R’s (Reduce, Rethink, Refuse, Recycle, Reuse, and Repair) and to take care of your environment. Thank you to the parents for supporting your child’s learning and making this year a success. Have an enjoyable and exciting summer. See you in the Fall!!!

Grades 1 & 2 - Ms. E. Paragas

In May, we had a field trip to Children’s Museum. Students had so much fun playing with their friends. They enjoyed exploration activities inside the museum. We have two upcoming field trips for the month of June! We will be going to see Winnipeg Goldeyes Baseball game at the Shaw Park. The second field trip will be at Target Zero Eco Kids at The Forks that provides opportunities for students to experience first-hand earth-friendly initiatives like composting, bio diesel and geothermal temperature control. They also had the opportunity to explore the roles of people - both protecting and harming - our environment. During summer vacation, it is important to spend time reading and writing on a regular basis. Try some of these activities to make your summer full of literacy fun! Enjoy the closeness of sharing books by reading more difficult books aloud to help learn new vocabulary words, concepts, and ways of telling stories or presenting information.

√ Take books along on outings. Spend time reading books on the beach.

√ Connect read-aloud choices to summer activities - read books about camping, about topics that interest you, or a favorite fiction series.

√ Read a book and watch the video together and discuss the similarities and differences of movie versions.

√ Encourage your child to write this summer by writing postcards to friends and relatives to keeping a journal while on a trip.

Grades 2 & 3 - Mr. J. Truss It seems hard to believe that another school year has come and gone. I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation to all of you who were able to make it out to any number of the school-wide events that have over the course of the last ten months. I thoroughly enjoyed working with, and getting to know the students in Room 23 this past year. I would encourage all students to maintain and build upon the academic gains they have made this last year over the summer months. Reading daily for pleasure (magazines, comics and brochures, etc.), help with preparing a meal by reading a cookbook or following instructions on packaging are just two of the many ways in which students can apply their literacy or mathematical skills. In closing I would like to wish you all a safe and restful summer and look forward to hopefully seeing all of you again in September.

Grades 1 & 2 - Ms. C. Thomas The grade one and two students had an awesome time on their field trip in May to the Assiniboine Park Zoo. We had the opportunity to learn all about Polar Bears, including some fun facts such as did you know that Polar Bears fur is not actually white but translucent? The students also got to pat a camel when we took a walk around the Zoo to see the other animals! In May the students continued our inquiry on Our Community; this included going for a community scavenger hunt, creating community acrostic poems and sketching items in our community. In June the class will be beginning a new unit on Solids, Liquids and Gases in Science. This will include doing some fun experiments and a field trip to the Manitoba Museum! I can’t wait to see what other fun things are in store for this last month of school!

Grades 3 & 4 - Ms. W. MacKenzie

I hope you are all getting out and enjoying our beautiful weather. Well worth the wait! In June, we will be continuing our study of light and structures from around the world. In math, students will continue learning about multiplication and place value. Please remember to read each night with your child even over the summer months to keep up those reading skills! As the school year winds down, I am reflecting on what a true privilege it has been for me to have your children as my students. Our classroom community was rich with the kindness, knowledge, enthusiasm and talents that your children have brought to it. You all have amazing children to cherish as they grow up to be the leaders of tomorrow! Have a safe and enjoyable summer vacation!

Grades 4 & 5 Mr. B. Papineau

In May, the students worked really hard. Some of the things that we did include: learned about fractions, decimals, and problem solving in math; finished working with Shira Newman from Engaging Fusion on our clay-mation First Nations legends; made Mother’s Day cards and it was really messy; lots of spelling, reading, reading assessments, and writing in ELA; read The People of Sparks from the City of Ember series; started gardening at Furby and Westminster with Bridging the Gap; enjoyed our barbecue with our Youth to Youth partners at Balmoral Hall; met several community members who spoke to us about their working lives at our annual Career Fair; researching the north and Nunavut using books and the internet in social studies; and started looking at force, motion, and simple machines in Science. It goes without saying we are looking forward to our final month of school. A few dates to keep in mind for our room are:

June 10: excursion to Birds Hill Park – no lunches required!;

June 15: Wolseley Avenue School Day; June 17: Goldeyes game at Shaw Park with our book

buddies; June 19: bowling at Academy Lanes.

We will attempt to continue our homework/home-reading program going, but as the sunlight stays longer, I know this can be a challenge. Please at the very least make sure that your students are reading every day, as reading at home is the key to academic success.

Grades 3 & 4 - Ms. A. Nault

The end of the year sure is coming quick! The students have been hard at work in and out of the classroom. We started the month off with an exciting trip to the zoo and lucked out with such beautiful weather. We spent the morning creating our own animal species and making sure they were adapted for the environment they might be found in. We then explored the zoo and saw many animals out and about in their well-suited habitats. It was very exciting to see the lively harp seal swimming about after learning about them in our Canada’s North unit. We have completed our shadow puppet films and can’t wait to show them off! Learning about light and how shadows are produced really helped with the creative process. The students are working hard on learning about all types of measurement from centimeters to temperature. We are now learning about perimeter and area. Please remember to encourage your children to continue reading at least 20 minutes a night even with the warm weather. Why not bring the reading outside?

Grades 5 & 6 - Mr. B. Kussin

It is really hard to believe that another year of learning is rapidly coming to an end! The students are working at staying focused on completing their assignments, projects and homework. This month we will continue learning about fractions, decimals and percents. The students have really shown enthusiasm for this area of mathematics and have learned many important big ideas and concepts. We will also continue to work on our poetry booklets in Language Arts. The kids have authored some amazing poems, some very whimsical and some thought provoking. Of course as usual, the most exciting event this month is the Grade 6 Farewell. Planning is underway and as always, it will be the time to celebrate all of your child’s successes throughout their time at Mulvey. We look forward to seeing as many parents and guardians at the Farewell as possible on Thursday, June 25

th!

I would like to thank all the parents/guardians who have taken an active interest in their child’s progress this year. It is only with your help that your child can experience the successes they deserve. Have a safe and enjoyable summer.


Grades 5 & 6 - Ms. C. Fraser

With such beautiful weather we enter into the last month of school. It’s hard to believe another year has come and gone. Being the last month of school you may think things are quieting down but not so. We have many things planned and much to wrap up. We will be enjoying field day at our school, saying good bye to our Grade 6 students at their farewell, enjoying the Mulvey School Soccer Jamboree, wrapping up projects, going bowling with the entire school, participating in the Fit Run, and many more things. It is a busy time and a time to reflect on the many learning moments and friendships we have built throughout the year, the special times and of course the challenges too. I will miss my Grade 6 students but wish them all well with their future endeavours and I also wish the grade 5’s all the best next year in their final year at Mulvey. Thank you all for a special year and many fabulous moments that memories are made from. Have a wonderful learning month in June and an even better summer holiday. Best wishes…Ms. Fraser.

Grade 1, 2, & 3 PLS - Ms. C. Todd

The students and staff in PLS have been enjoying a few field trips, including lots of exploration and physical exercise at the Children’s Museum at The Forks. The students had lots of fun and used their imaginations on the train and loved the Lasagna Lookout. They played with water at the Splash Lab and had a great time on the huge colourful slide. We also had a field trip to a garden centre to buy flowering plants for the planters in front of the school. The students chose their favourite plants and then worked with adults to plant them. We will be going to Kid City on the 4

th of June and to a Goldeyes baseball

game on the 17th of June as well as bowling at Academy

Lanes on the 19th of June to finish off the year. During our

field trips, we focus on social skills to practise while out in the community in addition to motor and functional academic skills. Several students from PLS are transitioning to other schools for the 2015-2016 school year. We wish them well in their new schools and we will be visiting their receiving schools to help familiarize the students with their new surroundings for the fall. We wish everyone in the Mulvey School Community a fun-filled and safe summer with lots of quality time with family and friends!

Grades 4 & 5 - Ms. C. Vande Graaf

It’s hard to believe that the year is coming to a close. Wow, it sure has gone by fast and what a great year it has been!!! We are excited to continue our leaning into the month of June. In Math we have been focusing on fractions/decimals/percents and reviewing all the different strategies we have used throughout the year. We have also been working on math strings and on sharing our thinking. This is a great way for the students to learn from and help each other. We are so excited right now to be involved with the Tomatosphere project in our classroom. This is a project in conjunction with the Canadian Space Agency. They are researching the possibilities of growing fresh food on the International Space Station and have elicited the help of classrooms all across the country. We are growing two sets of tomato plants in the room, one group that has been through a simulated space environment and one control group. We are recording the results and then sending our findings in to the CSA. We don’t know which group is which at the moment but we are so excited to see what will happen. Ask your child to fill you in on what we have noticed so far and what they think the outcomes will be. We are also looking forward to heading out to Bird’s Hill Park for a day of hiking, exploring and fun. We will be roasting hot dogs on the fire and celebrating a wonderful year together as a class. Thank you again for a wonderful learning year. I hope you all have a safe and happy summer and I look forward to seeing you in the fall!!

Coach Program - Ms. P . Solmundson

It’s hard to believe that another school year is coming to an end. In May we welcomed our summer Practicum student Dora to our class. We planted seeds in the classroom and watched them grow! The students checked on them every day eager to see the changes. Next we transplanted them outside into our garden. Now we’re excited to see if we can produce enough peas and cucumbers to eat. On Friday May 15, we all headed out to Narcisse to see the emergence of the red sided garter snakes. There weren’t a lot of snakes because of the cooler weather but everyone got to hold or touch a snake. In June we’re going to be learning about the butterfly life cycle and we’ll be watching caterpillars transform in the classroom! We’re also planning on going to Kidsfest at the Forks and to Bird’s Hill Park to learn about wilderness survival and geocaching. Hopefully the weather is nice and we get other opportunities for outdoor learning. It’s been a great year and we hope everyone has a safe and happy summer break!

Coach Program - Mr. M. Jefkins

May was an interesting month for observing the weather. We saw summer temperatures at the beginning of the month and then revisited winter on the May long weekend! Fortunately the snow melted fast and we were able to enjoy the weather again. We got outside to visit the Narcisse Snake Pits just before that weekend. Fortunately the sun was shining and we were able to see, and handle, quite a few snakes. We have been thinking a lot about getting closer to nature this past year with several stories of survival in the Canadian wilderness. We just finished reading, Brian’s Return, which is a sequel to Hatchet, telling what happened when Brian decided he missed his life in the wilderness. This is the story that the author, Gary Paulsen, always wanted to tell. We have been growing oyster mushrooms in our classroom. It took a whole month for them to do anything and then suddenly, in one week, we had enough to harvest and have a small meal. Not everyone likes mushrooms but some of us did. Speaking of growing, we joined students from the class next door and planted a couple of flowerbeds for the neighbour, who appreciated the help. Of course many of us are anticipating the upcoming summer break. Many of us have plans and it feels like it is coming fast. Enjoy your summer!


LAC - Mr. D. Vicente

Well Mulvey Mustangs, we made it though another successful year! Good Job! It was great to see everyone at the year end BBQ, thanks for coming out. This month we are going to remember the many successes that the LAC Class has experienced during this school year. In addition we will be staying busy with outings and new adventures. During this time it is important that students have applied sunscreen and have it in their bags to help protect them during these lovely sunny days we hope to experience. Also, a reminder to families of how important it is to encourage your children to read and practice their writing and math skills during the summer break. A quick review of the times tables, some mental math or reading a few good books will make the transition into next year much easier. The LAC team hopes everyone has a wonderful summer that is safe and filled with the making

of new memories! We look forward to another year filled with great strides and achievements! See you all in September!

Sunny Sundara, one of our custodial team members will be retiring this month, after a very long and distinguished career with The Winnipeg School Division. I personally would like to thank Sunny for his energy, skill and dedication that he provided to Mulvey School. He was an excellent addition to our custodial team. The pride that he took in always doing his job well will surely be missed. Please take a moment to congratulate Mr. Sunny on his retirement. Wishing him all the best and a very Happy and Healthy Retirement from the entire Mulvey School Community.

Mulvey School wants to acknowledge all of our wonderful parents, friends and community members who volunteered over the past school year. Thanks to the generous efforts of so many, we had a fantastic school year filled with rewarding and memorable events. Everything from reading, music lessons to fundraisers. Our very generous volunteers have contributed to our students countless hours, skill and talent to help further enhance our students programming to promote their development and growth. Thank you, we appreciate all you do for Mulvey School! Volunteer Appreciation Lunch will be served on June 11th in the Mulvey School Library.

You will receive either a school supply list or a request for payment for next school year with your student’s report card.

Nursery and Kindergarten parents will receive a letter over the summer with an interview time and date to meet with the teacher, and for the student to see their new classroom.

Mulvey School Parent Council Lunch Program News A reminder that the lunch program fees for the month of May are due. The Mulvey School Parent Council Lunch Program will be accepting registrations for the upcoming 2015-16 school year, after June 8, 2015 You must re-register your child every year to be in the program. Please pick up a form from the office if you are interested. A reminder that the Lunch Program is available for students whose parents are not available to supervise their children due to work hours or are enrolled in school during the lunch hour.

◊ Parents must register all children before they attend the lunch program on a yearly basis.

◊ Parents will not be allowed to register a child if there is an outstanding debt owed to the program.

◊ The fees are due at the beginning of each month and are for supervision only. Not paying on time, without any prior arrangements, will result in a suspension of lunch program privileges.

◊ Registration is based on a first come first served basis.

◊ Parents are expected to provide their children with a lunch. Please do not send fish or nuts due to

allergies.

◊ Children are expected to follow the lunch program rules, failure to do so will result in a suspension of lunch program privileges for the child(ren).

Pro Social Skill of the Month

Some of their reminders were:

All children under 18 must wear a helmet.

Make sure that your bike and helmet fit you - too big

or too small can be dangerous.

Stop at all stop signs and traffic lights.

Walk your bike when using a crosswalk.

Always ride in single file, not side by side.

Use your hand signals so drivers know where you are heading.

The Special Education Unit of the Winnipeg Police Service

will be coming to Mulvey School on June 15, 16, & 17 to present to students and parents on:

Personal Safety and Online Safety

Personal Safety: Grades 1-3 - June 15th

Students will learn what an emergency is, how to get help in different situations, including the use of the 911 system, dealing with strangers, Internet safety, the use of bike helmets, and street safety.

Online Safety: Grades 4-6 - June 16th

Students will learn about online behaviour and the related dangers including social, emotional and physical risks. They will also learn about the consequences for their actions as well as resources to assist them.

Personal/Online Safety for Parents: June 17th

There will also be a session for parents after the Parent Council BBQ lunch. It will cover all the information the stu-dents have been given.

Summer is just around the corner – which means that Winnipeg Public Library’s TD Summer Reading Club is about to begin. Registration opens on June 22 and the program runs until August 21. Summer Reading club is a FREE program that encourages children to continue reading over the summer while having fun. Readers and pre-readers are welcome to join the club. Readers are encouraged to read daily and mark the calendar in their reading kit for every day they read. Register at any library. The closest library to Mulvey School is the Cornish Library. It is located at 20 West Gate…the other side of the Misericordia Hospital. Enjoy your summer by reading with your children… no matter how old. Debbi White SERT

Career Fair Day 2015 The day provided an opportunity for our Intermediate students, Grades 4, 5 and 6, to learn about a few professions. This day was an excellent chance for students to look ahead to the future and begin to think about different careers. To support our theme this year of Possibilities, we asked our presenters to talk to the students about what inspired them to go into their chosen field. Students were able to see presentations from a Nurse, two Edward Carriere Stylists, a Police Constable, two U of M Athletes, and a Musician and Musical Producer.
