Since1934,Minnesotaarchitectshavecometogetherannuallytobemotivatedandinspiredinnumerousways.Thelearningopportunitiesandsocialinteractionallowustoreflectonourbondasaprofessionofindividualswhohaveagenuineimpactonpeople’slives.Thefactthatwethoughtfullyshapethespaceswherepeoplework,play,live,andlearnisintenselyprofound—andyetmostofusthinkofitassimply“whatwedo.”
Keepthistruthinmindasyoucatchupwithcolleaguesineducationsessions,intheexhibithall,andoverlunchorcoffee.We’llallbehealthierforhavingtheseexchanges.FriendshipandcamaraderiestrengthenourabilitytoACCESSEXCELLENCE.

Thosetenwordshavegreatsignificancetotheworkthatwedoeveryday.Weknowthatarchitectshaveanirrevocableobligationtothepublicforprotectingtheirhealth,safety,andwelfare.Howwedothisiskey.
IjustreturnedfromaconferenceinVancouverwithafocusonHealthy&SustainableBuildings&Communities—whereDr.RichardJacksonmadethatdeclaration.Dr.JacksonhasworkedinpublichealthattheCentersforDiseaseControlandnowatUCLA,andheisaformerboardmemberofAIA.Heclearlystatedhowtheeffectsofbuildingdesignmakeahugedifferenceonpublichealthandcannotbeoverstated.Thiswasagreatremindertomeoftheoverallimportanceofdesign.Wemustdesignourbuildingstoencouragewalkingand,justasimportant,wecannotthinkthatourresponsibilitystopsatthebuilding’swallsbutextendsbeyondtoourneighborhoods,ourcommunity,andourcity.Itisthedutyofthearchitecttopromotehealthyliving.JustasVancouverhasdeliberatelycreatedawalkablecity,wetoomustcreatelivableplaces.
Asarchitects,thematerialsweuseandtheHVACsystemswespecify,togetherwithgooddaylighting,beautifullandscaping,andeverythingelsewedothatmakesabuildingsustainable,positivelyaffectallofourwell-being.Todosoisourbasicobligation.

Thomas Harold Hodne Jr., FAIA, age87,ofMinneapolispassedawaypeacefullyonSept.14,2014.ThomaswasanarchitectextraordinaireandloyalTwinsfan.Hewasanaward-winningarchitectandone-timeprofessorattheUniversityofMinnesota.Amongotherthings,hedesignedtheMinneapolisAmericanIndianCenterandbecameachampionforthepreservationofhistoricbuildings.Thomas,whowasborninMinneapolis,earnedhisarchitecturedegreeattheUniversityofMinnesotaandstartedhisownfirm,whichbecameHodne-Stageberg,inDinkytown.Forhismaster’sdegreeatMITin1956,hewroteadissertationproposingtherevitalizationoftheUptownneighborhood—completewithanundulatingpedestrianmall,plazas,and“apedestrianoverpasstotheshoresofLakeCalhoun.”“It’s meant to be both serious and imaginative,”hewrote.Oneofhisbest-knownprojectswasa1963designforahugeurban-renewalproject,1199PlazainEastHarlem,inUpperManhattan.Hisdesign,foraneight-square-blockhousingproject,wonfirstplaceinanationalcompetitionanda$10,000prize.Theprojecttook11yearstobuild,saysRothstein,but“it was huge and it’s still there.”
