Volunteer of the month
Congratulations to
Irina Georgieva
As Irina has moved on to pursue her professional carrier, we feel it is appropriate to recognize her contribution to ACCESS, her committed service and exceptional work ethic. In her quiet unassuming way Irina demonstrated high professional standard of the organisation and was an exemplary ambassador for ACCESS at The Hague International Centre. We wish her success in her professional carrier and are very happy that she desires to continue her association with the department and ACCESS albeit on ad hoc basis.
Thank you, congratulations and well done!

COMMUNICATIONS ACCESS website Our new website has gone live and it looks and feels amazing. And our users feedback shows the same. There are still some minor bugs that need to be fixed. ACCESS ezine The first ACCESS ezine is in process. Lee and Marek are working on converting the magazine layout into a digital version. We can’t wait to see the result 1 March when spring issue is published. Contribute to the ezine and website The cover feature in the spring issue will be the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, and we are looking for your travel ideas and tips for a visit to London and the UK. A collection of these will appear in a special travel feature in the spring edition. If you would like to share a favourite attraction, location or event with our readers please get in touch with Lee -‐ editor@access-‐nl.org We are also looking for a writer for an article about Kraamzorg in the Netherlands for our website. We have a lot of information about giving birth in the Netherlands in the ACCESS Guide, on our website and in the article ‘An expecting expat’ (summer 2011), but an article about the unique Dutch kraamzorg is needed. Interested? Contact Carina – communications@access-‐nl.org Social Media A Facebook group for ACCESS volunteers has been created, it is called ‘ACCESS Volunteers’, search for it (ACCESS in uppercase!) or use this link: www.facebook.com/groups/308062515897693 -‐ Please come join us!

CED – COMMUNITY EDUCATION 15 trainers are working for CED in 2012 and many interested parties continue to do interviewing to become trainers. Next CED meeting is 7 February and all are welcome to attend. Please RSVP if attending.
CED vs CEB Childbirth Preparation Courses are managed by CEB. The rest by CED.
CSD – COMPUTER SERVICES Over the Christmas and New Year period, all computers were updated and overhauled. Some minor changes were made however all is working well. Should you have any problems with the computers, it is important to inform John (csd@access-‐nl.org) as soon as possible with a brief explanation of the problem or error message stating when and on which computer this problem took place. The computers will be numbered in the near future to ease eventual problem shooting. It appears spam in on the increase again – ignore bank emails as a bank will never ask for account details or pin numbers. Also ignore any emails stating “click here to view my pictures” or similar words and if there is an attachment on an email from a sender which you do not recognize, do not open it as there is a high probability it contains a virus, If in doubt, please get in contact with John. RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT ‘Helping ACCESS help you’ is possible in many ways. Please all familiarise yourself with the ‘Helping ACCESS…’ page on our website. It has links to all relevant documents and further information about becoming an Advertiser, Associate, Partner, Trainer and Volunteer. http://www.access-‐nl.org/about-‐access/how-‐we-‐do-‐it/helping-‐access.aspx

FOOD COLLECTION FOR THE VOEDSELBANK In the eyes of many people the Netherlands is a rich country. However, there are a lot of people who are really poor and don’t have enough money to buy food. They got financial problems for several reasons, e.g. they’ve lost their job and due to bureaucracy it takes a while before they get a benefit from the government (and their savings are not enough to cover this period), people who spent more than they had and got many loans, an entrepreneur who tried to keep his business alive as long as possible, using all his savings but finally went bankrupt. These people can qualify for a weekly food package from the Voedselbank for max. 3 years. They qualify if they have hardly any savings and have no more than about €50-‐70 a week for food and clothes. Personally I want to help these people by donating food to the Voedselbank. This non-‐profit organisation is completely run by volunteers and gets food from supermarkets (for free, as they get left overs) but due to the economic crisis the supermarkets give less food while the Voedselbank needs the same amount or even more food. As an individual I can only give food occasionally. I was thinking, may be we at ACCESS can set up a project for them. Asking volunteers to bring food that can be kept for a long time (e.g. vegetables in pot or can, ragout or hachee in pot or can, sterilised milk, packed cheese, pasta). We could collect it in the office and after a while either bring it to the Voedselbank or ask them to pick it up at the office (they are willing to do that if there are a few boxes with food). Recently some of my friends (former ACCESS volunteers) and I collected food for the Voedselbank and they were very happy with it. In The Hague there are 2250 packages prepared on a weekly basis, serving all together 3500 people (1 package per family). All over the Netherlands there are about 55.000 people who need the Voedselbank. My question is : would you mind to think about this and see if we are able/willing to do such a thing, somewhere next year? It doesn’t cost us any money and I could give you the contact details of the right person of the Voedselbank when we need somebody to pick it up or if we want to deliver it somewhere ourselves. /Genoveva
If you too think this is a GREAT IDEA, please bring any food suitable for storing in the office until pick up by or send off to the Voedselbank, AND with a ‘use by date’ more than a couple of months from bringing in date.

THE HAGUE INTERNATIONAL NETWORK – FIRST 2012 MEETING Date: Tuesday, February 7 from 18.00 to 20.00 Location: Verrijn Stuartlaan 20, 2288 EL Rijswijk Host: Competa IT -‐ Pragmatic IT Solutions Andy Haxby Director of Competa IT Neil Carmichael founding member of the Fair Trade Software Foundation For the first network meeting of the year 2012 we will meet in Competa Conferece Centre; a new conference hall in Rijswijk, where facilities also include the ability to broadcast presentations and meetings over the internet. What is also new to this meeting is the caracter of the visit: the first to an IT company. The host for the evening is Competa IT, where Andy Haxby and Neil Carmichael will elaborate on a complete new theme. (www.competa.com) Fair Trade products are familiar, and Fair Trade has been an enormous benefit to people in developing countries. This short talk will explain how Fair Trade is being extended to cover services such as Software Development, reducing costs and increasing innovation in the developed world whilst creating employment in developing countries. "Trade Not Aid" If you are interested in networking, simply reply by clicking [email protected] and write your name as well as the name of your company or organisation. If you would like additional information please feel free to contact Marianne van Zon (tel. 071 562 1034).
The purpose of The Hague International Network is to establish a social environment where a diverse international group of professionals can benefit by having the opportunity to meet, exchange ideas, discuss various topics of interest, as well as, develop new business contacts. The gatherings are not intended to be a forum for doing business or for the hard sell. Those who do this are discouraged from attending. The reason for the gatherings is more social in nature and less business-‐oriented. The Hague International Network is a place for the international community to meet and develop relationships of all kinds.

ACCESS COURSE -‐ MIND YOUR STRESS Friday 23 March and Saturday 24 March, with a follow-‐up on Saturday 21 April, 13.00 -‐ 16.30. A unique opportunity to learn how to reduce unsupportive emotional stress reactions. When stress is experienced daily and becomes chronic the effects can be devastating for your health and wellbeing. In this highly impactful program with 3 group sessions of 3 ½ hours we will explore various ways to develop emotional control and become more stress resilient. You will learn to: recognise your stress triggers ° increase your energy and vitality ° neutralize the effects of the stress reactions ° understand the body & mind ° implications of stress ° improve the health of your nervous system ° transform your stress 'on thespot' anywhere, anytime ° achieve improved mental clarity ° develop better problem solving skills ° make more supportive choices in your life This is a learning experience, not a therapy. You are the focus -‐ you are there for yourself. There is no expectation for sharing experiences with the group though the support of the group is present. For further emphasis, the training will be followed up with monthly informative newsletters and weekly email coaching tips over a 3 month period. The Trainer After experiencing the toxic health consequences of stress herself, Mary Jane started on a journey. She discovered the causes and effects of stress and how we can become more stress resilient. She has become passionate about sharing her knowledge on how to improve one’s emotional balance. Mary Jane was a registered nurse in Canada, is a NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) Master Practitioner, a certified Stress Counselor from Sonnevelt Opleiding, and a licensed Institute of HeartMath provider. She counsels and facilitates individuals and companies on how to develop better coping skills. 11 February – 28 May ALEXANDER CALDER -‐ THE GREAT DISCOVERY Early on, Calder redefined sculpture by drawing three-‐dimensional figures and portraits with wire in space. Then, in 1930, he visited Mondrian’s studio in Paris, which was to be a turning point in his career. Calder admired Mondrian’s use of space and converted it into his own artistic expression grounded in gesture and immateriality. The central feature of the forthcoming exhibition is a complete reconstruction of Mondrian’s studio in the Rue du Départ. This exhibit marks Calder’s transition from figurative to abstract art: it was his visit to this studio in 1930 that triggered a radical change in his artistic practice. Abandoning his figurative sculptures, he became an abstract artist. He began to add red, black or white discs to his wire and to produce mobiles of increasing size, in which he constantly sought to combine equilibrium and movement. 22 February – 4 March SWANLAKE The world-‐famous, and probably the most well know dance classic, Swanlake as a new experience. 60 singers, 26 dancers and 7 musicians will take the audience on a contemporary journey through a choreography created by Lonneke van Leth accompanied by enormous set design and LIVE music. A modern version of this classic created by composer Eef van Breen and visual artist Vincent de Kooker using today’s technology: giant projections, modern dance, new compositions and a monumental art installation give the audience a very special experience. It will change your view of the original Swanlake. The Story This Story starts where the original ended, with the tragic suicide of the main characters: Siegfried and Odette.
