Hudson Road and Bridge Street Blackspot Improvement Project Newsletter | December 2014 Brisbane City Council is upgrading the Hudson Road and Bridge Street intersections at Albion to improve safety. The $513,000 project is being funded through the Australian Government’s Black Spot program, which aims to improve locations that demonstrate a high rate of accidents. There were 27 recorded accidents at the Hudson Road and Bridge Street intersections between January 2006 and December 2010. These accidents occurred when motorists attempted to continue straight ahead on Bridge Street or Hudson Road, conflicting with the main flow of traffic that crosses the rail overpass. The upgrade aims to prevent future accidents by removing the most dangerous behaviours, which have the highest crash rate. This will greatly improve the safety and efficiency of the intersections and will benefit the many commuters and residents who use the rail overpass each day. Project features Installing central medians on the approaches to the rail overpass to reinforce the main traffic route. This work will result in some traffic movements into and out of Bridge Street (south of the bridge) and Hudson Road (north of the bridge) being restricted. Please see attached Project Plan. Installing other local congestion and safety improvements in the surrounding street network to improve alternative routes for the movements that will be removed as part of this project. The project team is working closely with the Department of Transport and Main Road to ensure this upgrade is co-ordinated with the proposed North Brisbane Bikeway project planned for Bridge Street. The Black Spot project will start in early 2015 to align as closely as possible with the construction of the North Brisbane Bikeway. The local community will be notified before construction of the upgrade starts.

Brisbane City Council is upgrading the Hudson Road and Bridge Street intersections at Albion to improve safety.

Project features Installing central medians on the approaches to the rail overpass to reinforce the main

traffic route.

Intersection upgrade designThe map shows the Bridge Street and Hudson Road intersection upgrade.

The map shows the railway tracks and rail overpass with Bridge Street to the East and Hudson Road to the west. The project involves installing a traffic island on Hudson Road to remove the right turn to Hudson Road North and the right turn from Hudson Road onto the Rail Overpass, installing a proposed right turn pocket into Madden Street from Hudson Road, and creating a no right turn from Bridge Street onto the Rail Overpass.

The project also includes creating a no entry into Bridge Street South. A right turn pocket from Bridge Street into Merehaye Street and the installation of traffic islands on Bridge Street will also occur.

A 2m wide bike and pedestrian footpath will be constructed on the western side of Bridge Street and a bike cross over point will be built on the eastern side of Bridge Street. The project will also include landscaping on the eastern and western sides of Bridge Street.
