Student/Parent Handbook Commitment

September, 2016

Dear Parents/Guardians, When you send a child to St Mary School, you are making a spiritual and academic decision. That decision compasses a great deal of trust in who we are and what we are about. We need to know that you as parents, the prime educators of your child, are supportive and enthusiastic about our academic goals and our spiritual endeavors. We ask you to read this handbook, on our website, and discuss it with your child/ren. We also need your signature and your child/ren's signature on the form below; indicating that you have read, understood and have agreed to be governed by this handbook. Please sign and return the form below to SMS by Friday, September 16th. Thank you! Sincerely, Mrs. Mancuso and SMS Faculty ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Race for Education News

Dear Parents/Guardians, As St. Mary School prepares for our fourth “Race for Education,” we are excited about the financial potential this fundraiser has for our school!! Last year we raised over $42,000!!! We will be sending “sponsor mailers” to prospective donors throughout the United States. We are hoping that school families will help with the mailing costs, either by contributing one book of stamps (twenty 47 cent stamps) or by giving a monetary donation to help with the mailing costs. As our way of saying “thank you” to St. Mary School families who donate toward our mailing costs, your name will be placed into a drawing for a $25 WaWa gift card. If you are able to help our school, please check one of the spaces below. Please have your child return the bottom of this form and give the book of stamps or donation to his/her teacher by Monday, September 26. Thank you so much for your support! Gratefully, Patricia Mancuso, Principal & Jackie Kern, Race Coordinator

Dear St. Mary School Families,

Our mission at St. Mary School is that we are learning and living in Christ. Many of our students belong to our school parish, Our Lady of Peace Parish, and attend weekly mass. Our parish provides assistance to our school in many ways. We feel it would be nice to show our appreciation and help bring our school and our parish closer by having our students participate in the weekend masses. Whether you belong to Our Lady of Peace Parish or another, we would like as many children as possible to participate in the masses at Our Lady of Peace Parish. Once a month we will have a designated mass where our school children will greet people as they come into church, bring up the gifts, altar serve, and hand out bulletins at the end of mass. Students will be dressed in their uniforms and there will be a teacher present at the masses to guide the students. Students will sit with their parents at mass. The mass times and days will vary each month so that we are able to reach all of our parishioners. If you would like your child to participate, please complete the form and return it to school. Several students will be chosen for each mass and you will be notified by email prior to the mass. On the date that your child is participating, please be sure to check your email in the event of inclement weather. If you have any questions, or your child is unable to attend a scheduled mass for any reason, please contact Mrs. DiCicco at [email protected], Mrs. Cole at [email protected] or Mrs. Bryson at [email protected].

SMS Garden Club

Our school garden was made possible by contributions from families in memory of Jennifer Lowry. Jennifer’s service and

dedication to her children and our school will be remembered by all who

tend this garden and sit on the memorial bench at this site.

If you’d like to donate to this project or

serve on the garden committee, we welcome the help and contributions.

The mission of Jenny’s Garden is to nurture an appreciation of God's

creation as stewards of the land, enhance classroom lessons in

science and health by growing a sustainable organic vegetable garden and in time, contribute to our community by sharing fresh vegetables to those in need through our parish food pantry, which

helps more than 80 families weekly.

“Jenny’s Garden”

This fall, we’ll meet through our pumpkin harvest in November. We will pick back up again in early spring with a hiatus from

December through February. We are asking participating students to contribute $10 to support our programming and to

purchase supplies. Other planned fundraisers will hopefully defray this fee in the future.

Yes, my student has permission to attend the SMS Garden Club:

CHESS CLUB

2016-2017 Dear Parents/Guardians, We will be offering a Chess Club again this year for students in grades K through 8th here at St Mary School. Chess is a wonderful game to help build critical thinking and organizational skills. We will add checkers for our younger students. The students will meet on the First and Third Thursday of the month. We would like to invite parent volunteers to help, especially when we get started. Your student does not have to know how to play the games to join us. Learning how to play is part of the fun. The club will meet from 2:45-4:00 in the Science Lab. You may pack a light snack that they can have from 2:45 until we start to play at 3:00. The students will clean up the tables before we start so they will need a napkin or paper towel to place under their snack. You will also need to provide transportation home. You must pick up your child on time and at the 8th grade doors by the science lab at 4:00 pm. Our first meeting will be Thursday, October 6th. Please fill out and return the form below if your child is interested in joining our Chess Club. The love of Christmas, Italian-style!Her famous nativities in the hundreds all over the island, dazzling Christmas lights, joyous

cacophony of church bells on Christmas Eve, the night of the Luminari, buccellato and zabaglione, and La Beffana’s sweets for the children --- all this heralds the holy season in Sicily.

Enter The Sicilian Tenors!Christmas Amore unites three marvelous Tenor voices with the world’s

best loved music to ring in the season and put joy in your heart.

Taking their audience on a romantic journey from Hollywood to Broadway to Italy using multimedia backgrounds, storytelling and song, The Sicilian Tenors provide an evening of

non-stop entertainment to lift the spirits, gladden the soul, and celebrate the Christmas miracle.

Wrapped in sparking paper and tied with festive bows, the timeless Christmas melodies of Adeste Fideles and O Holy Night combine with

powerful Italian classics like O Sole Mio to create a truly unique holiday concert.

Christmas Amore... Don’t Miss It!

“The format was fresh, and The Tenors were in fine tune, delivering on such favorites as Silent Night, O Solo Mio and one of Lanza’s biggest hits, Be My Love. Glorious, glorious, glorious, The Sicilian Tenors hit all the right notes. Moving the audience from tears to laughter with warm nostalgia and warm voices. The value of beauty, especially in music, can’t be overstated for the picking up of your spirits and making you smile.”

Attention all NEW and CURRENT St. Mary School Volunteers:

As per the Diocese of Camden, school volunteers must have CAP (Child Assault Prevention) training every 5 years. If you are a new volunteer and have never attended a CAP session before, you will have to attend a CAP 1 session.

If you are a current volunteer and have attended a CAP session you have the option of attending CAP 1 again or you may attend the CAP 2 session. Please below for the June CAP dates and locations.

If you have any questions regarding CAP, please email Ann Marie Morales at [email protected].

Child and Youth Protection We can be sure that we love God’s children when we love God and do what he has commanded. 1 John 5:2

The Office of Child and Youth Protection is announcing CAP (Child Assault Prevention) sessions. CAP is the safe environment training program for adults who have regular contact with minors. Attendance is required in order to comply with the USCCB’s Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. The policy of the Diocese of Camden is that adults will attend CAP once every five years.

CAP 1 teaches attendees to recognize child abuse and neglect and how to report to the proper authorities. Adults are taught that children have the right to be safe, strong and free. CAP 1 is for new volunteers and employees.

CAP 2 is called CAP’s Bullying Prevention Program and is a workshop addressing bullying awareness and bullying prevention. Cyber-bullying is also presented.

CAP 3 is called Cyber-Empowerment and is a workshop which promotes adults understanding of cyber activity of youth while teaching them realistic ways to help children keep their own rights and guard the rights of others in the cyber-sphere. Please note if you are holding a (CAP 3) session you will need to provide the following:

LCD Projector, Laptop, Screen and Speakers.

Each presentation is 90 minutes. Adults who are new employees or volunteers MUST attend CAP 1 before attending CAP 2 or CAP 3. After five years, adults

have the option of attending CAP 1, 2 or 3 when they renew their CAP.
