making a difference and it has really snowballed as to more funding needed. A request was put in as was called for “IF” extra funds were available. These did not become available.

2) Identifying, selecting and contacting targeted communities:

Community-based is important to the success of our physical activity strategy and to the accessing facilities grant, especially halls and schools, but for the bigger venues, centrally located in the municipality; those venues have the necessary equipment, volunteers and leadership; so the success is marketing to our service providers, facility operators, leaders and organizations and it takes off from there…they all have buy-in and ownership to this grant and to the strategy through successful partnerships and collaboration for the betterment of communities and residents, visitors in them and in the municipality leading to an increase in active and healthy lifestyles and active for life.

3) Resultant benefits to these groups:A great investment for a great initiative benefiting residents leading to an active

and healthy lifestyle. Exposure to physical activity, improved mental health, the social exposure to sports; a lot of Initiatives for a small amount of money that makes a big difference; leads to community development, partnerships, collavoration, active residents in active communities; can’t say enough about this NS Thrive initiative goal/objectives it’s is helping us in rural Victoria county and we thank you. 3682 total participants with investing $12,540.00, roughly $3.40 cents each. That is affordable and accessible and is what our strategy is trying to do. 539 total hours of free time offered.

4) Challenges with implementing your initiative to targeted communities?Active Pass was tough to promote, fine line. We wanted to make it as easiest as possible. There was no application, but the facility operators were aware funding was available for those in need. They were not too comfortable with this.

Ski cape smokey opened later this year, so the open house was later this year. Ski cape smokey is run by volunteers so you must respect when the best time is to meet their schedule and volunteers available, etc.

5) How did you and your partners overcome barriers or improve the initiative? The only barrier was the active pass and that was the lack of promotion on strategy end, not sure of what the response was foing to be with the funds that were available, so piloted in North Highlands Nordic and ingonish arena, to see how things were going to roll out in working with our partners and to make recommendations for Active Pass to be top priority the next grant dates. Organizations, leaders, service and facility providers/operators have bought in and ownership doing the best they can for the betterment of the rea and the health of residents.

The weather we had affected archery, others that had to be re-scheduled time wise due to school and/or cancellations due to weather.

6) What would you do differently to ensure further successful implementation at the community level?

Promote active pass to residents and the guidelines and what participating facilities are available

7) Has your organization and your partners developed any practices or policy to sustain free access to facilities? Please describe actions toward this or attach any pertinent documents.

No, this will be in the works this coming year realizing the municipality does not own any facilities relating to sport, recreation, leisure physical activity.

This may be tough in rural, isolated Victoria County as our declining and ageing population makes it very tough for our local facilities and volunteers to break-even, survive.

CBVRSB community-use policy is being reviewed April 2015.

8) Please indicate partnerships formed, or strengthened, as a result of your initiative – please include name of partnering organization and description of relationship:1) Community Businesses: Midway Motors-wishes to sponsor skates in

partnership; Tim Horton’s-Refreshments2) Corporate Entities:3) Facilities: North Highlands Nordic; Ski cape Smokey; Ingonish Outdoor

Easy access for residents and they appreciated it. Affordable and accessible; It increases access to facilities leading to residents & visitors increasing their physical activity levels with no cost. More leadership and equipment was needed, great turn-outs and a lot of new faces or faces that have been in the facility for a while. Great exposure and they come back with family or friends; Community-use of schools and community halls is very important to us/strategy and through this initiative community-use hours have increased leading to the schools being the hubs of our communities. Facility operators bought into the project and had ownership in partnership and collaboration which was important to the success.

10) Has the organization considered the possible reallocation of resources to programs and services to improve access to facilities & places to be active?

In the Naturally Active Victoria County Budget – monies will be budgeted for to allow our community groups to access facilities for their initiative in partnership with NS Thrive.

11) Please share specific recommendations you may have as it relates to what needs to happen to create more supportive environments and policies to facilitate access and inclusion?

Policy having facilities allocate a certain amount of free time in their facility with appropriate leadership and equipment through policy. This may be tough in rural, isolated Victoria County as our declining and ageing population makes it very tough for our local facilities and volunteers to break-even, survive. With CBVRSB, it’s hoped that a new policy for community-use will allow for more community – use hours at no cost, including weekends. Because of the lack of facilities in Victoria County, Community Halls play a role for groups to access for healthy eating. Also, Victoria County does not own any facilities for sports, recreation, leisure, physical activity.

12) Please include participant stories, testimonials, photos, media coverage and other pertinent information. Attach a separate page` if desired.

Ski Cape Smokey Open House – “Hi Vince; We had a great day at Smokey on Sunday April 5th. The free day was a great success with many new faces on the hill. Lots from Victoria Co but also about 20 from Industrial CB and even 4 from France and Denmark. Weather was great and we received excellent comments on the facility and the event. Many wanted to pass on their thanks to Victoria County
