COMPANYPart of Alfa Acciai Group since it was established in 1998, Acciaierie di Sicilia has a production capacity of about 500,000 tons/year of rod irons for reinforced concrete in bars and rolls, obtained by electric furnace melting of scrap iron coming exclusively from Sicily.

Thanks to its size, the technology it uses and its products, the Company is a major player in the European iron and steel industry and within Alfa Acciai Group it is the natural market reference for Southern Italy and the Islands.

Over the last years Acciaierie di Sicilia has launched a significant investment plan, mainly aimed at increasing efficiency in production and organization and achieving high environmental performances.

Acciaierie di Sicilia committed to improving the environmental impacts resulting from its processes by installing a new dust exhaust and reduction system for the melting furnace and a new exhaust hood.

The new fume treatment plant has a filtering surface of 12,000 m2 and with its innovative pulse cleaning system it can reach minimum emission levels, well below legal limits. Such an important action, together with the ability to manage the process, enables the Catania factory to be an environmentally-friendly site. Therefore, today Acciaierie di Sicilia can be an excellent reference in terms of environmental matters in Sicily.

ALSTOM PLANT

In 2010 Alstom Power Italia implemented measures for Acciaierie di Sicilia to revamp its facilities in the following plant areas.

Hood

A new high collection capacity canopy hood was realized by Alstom on top of the electric furnace. Incorporating all the dimensional and fluid-dynamic parameters of the building, the new hood was designed with the support of sophisticated mathematical models developed by Alstom (CFD). The new hood, replacing the existing one, collects fumes generated while the scrap is loaded into the furnace. The high collection capacity of the hood helps to clean air inside the steelworks, improving its comfort, and prevent fumes from being released to the external environment (diffuse emissions).

Secondary fume circuit

A new network of secondary fume exhaust ducts was realized with a more rational development. Thanks to an accurate analysis of the circuit’s critical points (gates, radiuses of curvature) any source of energy losses due to the circuit was identified, analyzed and reduced to the minimum. The result was a new network of low energy impact exhaust ducts.

Filter and exhaust unit

A new Alstom filter and exhaust unit was installed to replace old filters. Based on advanced technology, the new unit’s collection capacity is 1,400,000 m3/h. The unit consists of a bag filter, 3x1,600 kW motor-fans that ensure the right capacity at the necessary negative pressure and an exhaust chimney.

The filter is equipped with 8-metre-long filter bags and occupies a very limited footprint. The Alstom filter was developed by the Vaxjo research centre (S) based on minimum energy impact criteria. The bags are cleaned by Alstom Optipow® valves in On-line mode and using low-pressure compressed air (2-3 bar). The amount of compressed air needed by the innovative Alstom cleaning system is generally 10 times less than the amount needed by standard systems. The existing compressed air production station becomes even redundant and the use factor is reduced.

The 3 fans are controlled by low-voltage electric motors regulated by inverters (VVVF). These devices help to always have the best capacity regulation, configuring the system in such a way as to set the exhaust required for every single production stage.

Since it reduced power consumptions (per ton of steel produced) as a result of the use of Alstom low energy impact technologies (new ducts, bag filter, compressed air consumptions and inverters), Acciaieria di Sicilia was granted white certificates by the Energy Entity.
