After 1.5 year of implementation, Tubao has registered 65.28% while Pugo regis-tered a 48.05%. The control site (Bauang) registered an increase of in-ventory of 31.32%.

Increased birth weight was observed with

an average weight of 2.04 kgs. Anglo Nubian F2 kids registered the highest birth weight of 2.32 kg.

Increased weaning weight was observed

in weaned kids with an average weight of 9.79. Boer weaned kids registered the highest weight of 11.37 kgs.

Increased in slaughter weight was also

observed in Boer slaughter goats with an average of 20.30 kgs.

The pre weaning (0-3 months) and post

weaning (3-8 months) mortality regis-tered a 50% reduction of mortality as compared in the control site.

Increased sales inventory from the usual

sale of less than Php 1000.00, there was an increased value of their stocks from Php 1400 to Php 1700 per head and a reduced waiting period to dispose for 3 to 4 months.

Pugo Small Ruminant Center was established at Brgy. Cuenca, Pugo La Union to showcase IGMT of goats and a breeding and forage center.

Goat Trading Center was inaugurated in Tubao to ca-ter the marketing of goats for breeder and meat pur-poses and to institutionalize the sale of goats by weight to avoid the “bultuhan” sys-tem. This the first goat trad-ing center established in La Union.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Participatory Methodology

Project monitoring and evaluation

The project was undertaken in two (2) focal and one control sites in Region I specifically in the province of La Union namely, Tubao, Pugo and Bauang to transform goat raising from a subsistence type of farm activity into a viable livestock based enterprise. It in-volves 45 farmer partners and an additional 37 spill-over farmer partners in three spill-over sites.

Characterization of the project sites, the farm

households and the farmer-partners were done through the conduct of Participatory Rural Appraisal cum Farmer’s Survey. The capability building strategy used was patterned from the process adopted by CASREN Philippines (2003).

IMPROVED HOUSING

STALL FEEDING

UPGRADING This is done to produce stocks with improved potentials for growth rate, body size, and milk yield, thus increasing body productivity and consequently profitability of the enterprise.

Confinement of animals in hous-ing with elevated slatted floors and made from locally available materials such as bamboo, coco lumber, cogon and nipa shingles.

Goats are raised under complete or semi-confinement system and fed cut-and-carry with available herbaceous forages supplement-ed with leguminous tree leaves and concentrates.

STRATEGIC WORM CONTROL

(developed through the ILRI-IFAD and CASREN projects )

A preventive practice that involves careful planning in the use of chem-ical dewormers to animals.

Animals are dewormed twice a year – first before the onset of the rainy season and the next during the peak rainy months. Succeeding dose maybe given after individual assessment of the animal’s condi-tion.
