Previous ETV Verification: EcoLibra

• Resource Recovery System

(R2S) for municipal

wastewater

• Treats WW and recovers

nutrients

• Elimination of green house

gases

• EWMCE was a Verification

Entity.

Previous ETV Verification: Super Controlled Flush

• Verification of a super controlled flush

• Super Controlled Flush Technology (SCF) is a toilet water holding tank modification kit designed to fit into most varieties of the common gravity siphon flush toilets.

• EWMCE was the testing agent

Testing and TP Verification for various clients

• Testing: For technologies still under development

• Verification: Performance claims exist

Aiming for commercialization

• EWMCE offers testing and Third Party Verification in addition to ETV Verification – Projects follow:

Testing: Development of a Biological On-site System

with Ozone Disinfection

• Package plant designed for drilling and

construction camps

• Company requested assistance in

validating the technology with 3rd party

data

• Fixed-film bioreactor technology

– Original intent was to pre-treat with

ozone to break up large particles

– Assessment indicated this approach not

optimal

– Improved the performance of the BAF

to meet APSSSP (level 2)

– Ozonation or UV to improve it to level 3

Testing: Zeolite Media for Nutrients Removal

• Zeolite: Adsorption – Filtration Media

• Simultaneous removal of NH3 and P from activated sludge wastewater

• Optimization of media size

• Scale-up for pilot plant design

• Outcome:

– Media size optimized

– Simultaneous removal achieved

SCC Accreditation for CSA B128.3

• Undertaken by EWMCE and AOWMA with

support from CHMC and AMA.

• EWMCE to be accredited as a Certification Body

(CB) under ISO 17065

• Objectives:

– To determine how well the newly developed

standard (CSA B128.3) performs and provide

feedback to the CSA Committee

– Offer Certification services to clients in Alberta

and Canada as a whole

CSA B128.3 – Non Portable Wastewater Reuse

• The development of this Standard was made

possible in part thanks to the leadership and

financial support of Alberta Municipal Affairs and

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation

(CMHC).

• This Standard is considered suitable for use for

conformity assessment within the stated scope

of the Standard.

CSA B128.3 – Non Portable Wastewater Reuse

• This Standard covers packaged non-potable

water reuse systems for wastewater or

greywater that are intended for treatment

applications and have a capacity of 10,000 L/d

(2,650 gal/d) or less.

• This Standard also covers site-assembled

components included in package non-potable

water reuse systems.

CSA B128.3 – Non Portable Wastewater Reuse

Notes:

• (1) In this Standard, package non-potable water reuse

systems for wastewater or greywater are referred to as

package plants.

• (2) This Standard is not intended to limit the use of

package reuse systems in combination for applications

that require a treatment capacity greater than 10,000 L/d

(2,650 gal/d).

• (3) This Standard does not cover custom-engineered

systems. For such systems, the authority having

jurisdiction should be consulted.

Water Reuse Drivers

• Increasing water demands to sustain industrial and

population growth.

• Water scarcity and droughts, particularly in arid and

semi-arid regions..

• Environmental protection and enhancement in

combination with wastewater management

requirements.

• Socio-economic factors such as new regulations, health

concerns, public policies, and economic incentives.

• Public health protection (lack of access to fresh water

supplies coupled with high market access in urban and

peri-urban areas, drives untreated reuse in agriculture).

Page 21: ACCREDITATION OF THE EWMCE’S FACILITY AT GOLD BAR …€¦ · •Certification mark developed and registration applied in Sept. 2013 •EWMCE’s Quality Management System developed

Benefits of the Testing/Certification Facility

• The facility will give assurance to the public that the

tested water re-use units are meeting all the required

engineering and environmental standards.

• Albertans will not have to travel far just to have their

units tested/certified. Additionally, the service from the

facility will be offered to the whole of Canada.

• Having an accredited test facility will accelerate the

wastewater re-use in Alberta and Canada in general.

• Testing/Certification under the most severe Canadian

climate.

Conclusion

• The testing and certification facility will be

beneficial in many ways

• Overwhelming support has been received but

cash and in-kind contributions are still needed

• Equipment donation drive is still on-going and

way from the requirements. Your donation will

be highly appreciated.

• If everything goes as planned, the testing and

eventual certification should start before the end

of 2014.
