AR200 Sensitivity for typical surfacesand relative amounts of diffuse lightMost surfaces reflect light in two ways. Some lightis diffusely scattered over wide angles and someis reflected specularly, as from a mirror. Diffusereflections are typically used for measurement,since they scatter widely and can be detectedwithout precise alignment. The AR200 boasts greatsensitivity to small amounts of the diffusecomponent from shiny surfaces. Versions of theAR200 sensor can measure many materials usingeither specular or diffuse reflections.

Principles of OperationThe AR200 sensors project a beam of visible laser light that creates a spot on a target surface. Reflectedlight from the surface is viewed from an angle by a line scan camera inside the AR200 sensor. Thetarget’s distance is computed from the image pixel data. The AR200 can not be overloaded and measuresaccurately even when a mirror reflects the entire light beam back to the detector. Likewise, on surfacesof polished glass or water, almost the entire beam passes through or is reflected away. The AR200sensors can measure distance from the small remaining scattered light.

DefinitionsTarget Standoff Distance: Distance from the face ofthe sensor to the middle of the measurement range.Measurement Range (Span): Working measurementrange defined as the distance range over which thesensor will reliably measure displacement.Resolution: Smallest change in distance that a sensorcan detect. Stated as +/- % of the measurement range.Linearity: The largest deviation from a best-fit straightline over the measurement range, created by data fromthe sensor with reference taken from a true distancescale. Stated as +/- % of the measurement range.Sample Rate: Rate that data samples are obtainedfrom the sensor. The maximum attainable sample rateis determined by the selected operating mode and targetreflectance.Background Light Elimination (BLE): A user-selectedoperating mode that improves measurement in brightsurroundings by capturing an image with the laser offand subtracts it from the image taken with the laseron. Sample rates are lowered as a result.Sensitivity: A measure of the relative ability to detectsmall amounts of reflected light. The better thesensitivity, the higher the attainable sample rate onsurfaces such as glass, gloss black paint or shiny plastic.
