Who We Are

& What We’re About

Our Roots...

Paragon Learning was founded by a former high school

teacher and Harvard University graduate in partnership

with her husband who has a background in social ser-

vices and law enforcement.

Extremely passionate about working for the betterment

of youth and our community, Paragon’s founders recog-

nized the need to provide our students with additional

learning opportunities outside of the school setting.

Combining this passion with extensive experience and

research, Paragon Learning was established as a model

of excellence in the tutoring community.

Today...

Our model of excellence continues today as we consis-

tently strive to provide the best one-on-one, at-home tu-

toring services for K-12 students in the metro DC area.

Our mission is to provide the highest quality in tutoring

services tailored to each individual student’s needs as

well as each family’s schedule and budget.

We understand parents’ busy lives and the increasing

needs of youth, and we are here to offer a solid solution

that incorporates flexibility, collaboration and a lifelong

approach to learning.

Phone (202) 355-3348 Email [email protected] Web www.paragonpower.com

Working in collaboration with parents, teachers and other support

networks, we surround our students with an enriching environment that

promotes ease of learning and gives your child the space to gain and

practice independent skills.

Constant reflection and feedback are also key components of our

structure. Students are assessed at the start of enrollment and periodically

throughout their time with us so that we can ensure a tailored program

that changes with your child. After all, every student is unique and that is

something to be celebrated.

At Paragon, we believe all people are inherently inquisitive and natural learners. Children are born with the instinct to ask “why” and to explore their surroundings, and it is our job to act as guides in this journey.

IndividualizedStarting where your child is…Through an in-person meeting, skills

assessment and collaboration with

teachers, we do our best to gain a

thorough understanding of your child’s

needs and your goals. Then we develop

a program specifically built to fulfill

those needs.

Building relationships…Strong relationships are essential for

successful learning. In addition to

matching your child to the instructors

that best fits his or her needs and

personality, we also highly encourage

and provide opportunities for parent

and teacher involvement.

FlexibleIn-home tutoring…All of our tutoring is provided within

the comfort of your own home. Or if you

prefer...at a convenient and suitable

location of your choice.

Schedule and pay on your terms…You decide how much tutoring you’d

like and when you’d like it. Simply

purchase hours and use them as you

see fit based on a schedule you’ve set

up with your instructors.

LifelongBeginning with the future in mind…Tutoring is not merely about this test or

that assignment. It is about building the

skills and passion for lifelong learning -

both academically and personally.

Independent learning…It is not our intention to have your child

become dependent on our services

for success. Success is something all

students can achieve on their own,

and it is our job to provide the right

tools and guidance to make sure that

happens.

Phone (202) 355-3348 Email [email protected] Web www.paragonpower.com

There is nothing more important in terms of your child’s future than his or her education

What you choose to invest in today will multiply in

return over the course of your child’s lifetime leading

to increased opportunities, skills and confidence. This

return doesn’t end with your child. It continues for

years to come as knowledge and quality of life are

passed down to each new generation in your family.

Every child’s education should be a given, not an

option. The cost of what an average family spends on

“extras” each week can give your child the boost he or

she needs to excel in school and beyond. Your child is

ready, so begin today.

missionADVANCE the understanding of the brain and the nervous system by bringing together scientists of diverse backgrounds, by facilitating the integration of research directed at all levels of biological organization, and by encouraging translational research and the applica-tion of new scienti c knowledge to develop improved disease treatments and cures.

PROVIDE professional development activities, information, and educational resources for neuroscientists at all stages of their careers, including undergraduates, graduates, and post-doctoral fellows, and increase participation of scientists from diverse cultural, ethnic, and geographic backgrounds.

PROMOTE public information and general education about the nature of scienti c discov-ery and the results and implications of the latest neuroscience research. Support active and continuing discussions on ethical issues relating to the conduct and outcomes of neurosci-ence research.

INFORM legislators and other policymakers about new scienti c knowledge, recent devel-opments, and emerging opportunities in neuroscience research and their implications for public policy, societal bene t, and continued scienti c progress.

vision & valuesGuided by its mission and its values, the Society for Neuroscience (SfN)’s vision is that the next decade should be one of breakthrough discovery that will lead to the translation of scienti c advances to improve the health of people everywhere.

As SfN represents the entire range of scienti c research endeavors aimed at understanding, treating, and preventing nervous system disorders, it fosters the broad interdisciplinarity of the eld that uses multiple approaches to study the nervous systems of organisms ranging from invertebrates to humans across various stages of development, maturation, and aging. SfN also facilitates the translation of research ndings into treatment strategies, encourages information transfer from the clinic back to the basic research arena, and contributes to the breadth of the eld of neuroscience, and its creative use of all the tools of modern biology to understand neural function in health and disease.

Neuroscience is a rapidly evolving eld that bene ts greatly from, and helps to drive, the ongoing development of powerful new tools used to acquire and analyze experimental data. The effort to make ef cient use of the staggering amounts of diverse information known about the nervous system raises challenges that have social,

ethical, and technical dimensions. Some of these challenges are common to biomedical research and its subdisciplines of bioinformatics and scienti c ethics. Others are unique to neuroscience by virtue of the tremendous complexity of neural circuits and their role in controlling behavior. These challenges prompt opportunities, as well as responsibilities, to develop new tools and approaches for integrating and advancing the understanding of the nervous system.

SfN will play a key role in confronting new issues by challenging and energizing the eld through active dialogue with federal funding agencies, such as the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, and others, to de ne current needs and to develop strategies for meeting them. SfN’s perspective on the eld’s current nature and its future trajectory permeates all the elements of the strategic plan and will guide the initiatives aimed at enhancing key scienti c functions, including the annu- al meeting and The Journal of Neuroscience. This perspective will guide the ways in which SfN will strive to serve its membership and frame the public outreach and governmental interactions.

Identifying and serving the needs of SfN members as well as the eld of neuroscience.

Continuing to promote greater diversity of representation of women, minorities, and young investigators, along with geographic and specialty balance, in SfN’s meetings, confer- ences, committees, and governance processes.

Seeking innovative ways to utilize technology to better serve members and to help manage the problems of scale as a successful association in the 21st century.

Ful lling its Mission in a socially, economically and environmentally responsible fashion, including minimizing SfN’s environmental footprint through energy ef ciency, recycling, and other initiatives, and being mindful of the broader impact of its day-to-day practices.

Developing effective strategic relationships and collaborative initiatives with appropriate external partners, including other scienti c so- cieties and associations, health advocacy groups, foundations, public agencies, government entities, educational institutions, corporate entities, information technology service providers, etc.

Building a model of iterative planning into the fabric of SfN governance and management processes, incorporating regular evaluation of the impact and success of initiatives and activities and periodic revisiting programs.

HOW DO WE MAKE IT HAPPEN? A working group to be named by council will consider long-term meeting strategies. Staff and the program committee will explore ways to expand the capacity of the meeting within its existing framework. An improved system of reviewing and updating the meeting’s list of themes and topics will provide better documentation for groupings and changes.

ANNUAL MEETING STRATEGY

THE ISSUE: The rapidly expanding and increasingly complex body of neuroscience knowledge chal-lenges the society to recognize and react to changes quickly enough to sustain the scientifi c excellence of the meeting.

WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN? In coming years, the meeting might have to accommodate more than 35,000 attendees and 18,000 abstracts. SfN must improve its ability to organize vast amounts of content.
