    Arts, Culture, & Heritage

    In 15 to 20 years we will be...

    1. A community that is well known for its arts, culture, and heritage excellence and values.To achieve this objective we will:

    a. Protect, preserve, and celebrate our cultural, natural, and built heritage. b. Continue to document our history and increase our heritage efforts.c. Promote and sup port arts, culture, and heritage as part of the communitys beauty and unique identity. d. Showcase the T owns arts, culture, and heritage through community events and other initiatives.

    i. Plan and hold a high profile annual event or festival that celebrates arts, culture, and heritage.

    2. A community who offers consistent year-round arts, culture, and heritage activities, programs, and events.To achieve this objective we will:

    a. Develop an arts, culture, and heritage facility in the Waterfront Core Area which is used year round forsocial gatherings.

    b. Ensure there is consistency when and where events, activities, and programs occur. c. Collaborate with partners and institutions in the community, such as the sc hools and churches, community

    organizations, and local business, to support, develop, and promote arts, culture, and heritageprogramming, activities, and events in the community.

    i. Organize youth and senior activities with our local schools and the Mayflower Seniors Club.ii. Organize events that involve youth and seniors such as youth playing music at senior homes.iii. Partner with the Medical Society in Right Brain Released event.

    3. A community where arts, culture, and heritage are recognized as s trengthening residents community pride andsocial connectivity.To achieve this objective we will:

    a. Incorporate art, heritage, and culture in the built environment and design of the community. i. Bring public art into parks.

    b. Use art to reflect our sustainability vision.

    4. A community whose diverse arts, culture, and heritage attracts new residents and businesses to the community.To achieve this objective we will:

    a. Actively seek partnerships with the government and private sector to build an arts, culture, and heritagefacility, ideally in the Waterfront Core Area.

    b. Investigate opportunities to partner with the wastewater treatment facility to create a green facility whichheats an arts, culture, and heritage facility and/or offers educational opportunities.

    c. Prioritize affordable housing and studio / practice space to attract artists and musicians.

    5. A community who recognizes and encourages the influences of arts, culture, and heritage on holistic health andwell-being of residents.To achieve this objective we will:

    a. Promote and increase access and invitation to holistic health opportunities for residents.b. Support and promote programs and events in collaboration with partners to engage residents in physical

    activity and in creating healthy lifestyle habits.c. Increase arts, culture, and heritage programming for all.

    i. Ensure artistic education, including music and fine arts, is universally accessible to all children andyouth, in collaboration with the English Language School Board and Stratford schools.

    ii. Collaborate with the English Language School B oard and Stratford schools, and summer programfoster field-to-table and food skills in children and youth.

    6. A community where residents take ownership in cultivating arts, culture, and heritage efforts locally.To achieve this objective we will:

    a. Encourage greater citizen involvement in planning programs, events, and activities.i. Clearly communicate events, programs, facilities, and volunteer opportunities for arts, culture and

    heritage.ii. Expand our email list.

    iii. Reach out to specific individuals to engage residents in arts, culture, and heritage programming andactivities.

    iv. Install information kiosks and community boards in public spaces throughout the community to leresidents know about activities happening in the town.

    v. Run focus groups to identify ways to engage residents in arts, culture and heritage programming anactivities.

    b. Encourage a strong culture of volunteerism and seek to attract more volunteers in the arts, culture, and

    heritage areas.i. Provide incentives to promote volunteerism.ii. Ask residents directly to be volunteers, specifically looking to newcomers and residents who may

    not come forward.c. Develop and implement a support local program for local artists.

    i. Provide opportunities for local artists to showcase their talents.ii. Run a focus group with local artists to come up with ways for them to showcase their talents.

    iii. Increase residents knowledge about local artists. iv. Showcas e a local artist of the month on the Towns website and through other forms of

    communication.

    7. A community whose investment in arts, culture, and heritage is connected to growth.To achieve this objective we will:

    a. Develop and enhance community social and institutional capacity in order to increase opportunities for

    sharing experiences and knowledge. b. Identify funding opportunities to celebrate our cultural diversity.c. Build new cultural infrastructure and a permanent library and cultural facilities.d. Ensure there is balance between development of arts and cultural facilities and recreational amenities.

    8. A community who fosters, enhances, and celebrates multiculturalism and cultural diversity.To achieve this objective we will:

    a. Provide opportunities for residents to learn about and celebrate different cultures and generations throughvarious events and programs.

    b. Promote respect and foster a welcoming environment in the community. c. Maintain and seek new opportunities to engage newcomers in Town activities.

    i. Partner with the PEI Association of Newcomers to Canada to host events.ii. Actively reach out and encourage newcomers to participate in activities.iii. Designate one day a year as a multicultural or c ultural diversity day.iv. Ensure our website and other forms of communication are available to newcomers.
