COURSE LEVELS AND PROGRESSION OPPORTUNITIES

A LEVELS

These UK Level 3 qualifications are studied over two years and are highly valued by universities. They focus on academic subjects and most students study three or four subjects. A Levels became ‘linear’ in September 2015. This means that students study their subjects for 2 years, sitting exams at the end of the second year. A few subjects are still being offered under the old ‘modular’ system i.e. exams at the end of the first year and at the end of the second year.

BTEC DIPLOMAS AND EXTENDED DIPLOMAS

BTECs are gaining popularity as an alternative to A Levels, but cover a much wider range of academic levels. They are vocational qualifications equivalent to A Levels and at levels 4 -7 they hold the same status of achievement as a degree. Subjects offered as BTECs include Business Studies, Media, Engineering and Information Technology. One of the main differences between BTECs and A Levels is how they are assessed – A Levels mainly involve two years of study geared towards a few big exams at the end, whereas BTECs are continually assessed via coursework and practical projects.

INTERNATIONAL ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION

These are intensive courses that prepare international students for studying at UK universities. They cover a study pathway in your chosen subject, study skills and technique, and English language.

HNCS/HNDS

Higher National Certificates and Diplomas (HNCs and HNDs) combine theory and practice to develop practical and technical skills for a particular field of work. Designed in collaboration with industry, they involve a hands-on approach and are assessed through assignments and practical tasks. HNCs (UK Level 4) are equivalent to the first year of an Honours Degree. HNDs (UK Level 5) are equivalent to the first two years of an Honours Degree. The qualifications can be converted into a full Honours Degree with extra study.

FDA/FDSC

Foundation Degrees (UK Level 5) are equivalent to the first two years of an Honours Degree. An FdA is equivalent to the first two years of a BA and an FdSc is equivalent to the first two years of a BSc. They combine academic study with practical and technical training. On successful completion, students can progress to the final year of an Honours Degree. Assessment is through exams, practical work and on-the-job training.

START DATE: SEPTEMBER 2016 DURATION: 2 YEARS (FULL TIME) TUITION FEES: £10,500 PER YEAR

ABOUT THE COURSEThe A Level programme is an intensive academic programme of study at UK Level 3 over a two year period. The qualification is divided into an AS level (year 1) and an A2 level (year 2). Most students will study three or four A Level subjects.

From September 2015, A Levels changed to become linear. This means:

You must study these subjects for 2 years to get a qualificationThere will not be an AS exam at the end of Year 12. Your grade will be mainly based on A Level exams at the end of Year 13.

Some A levels are still modular. This means:

You will sit an AS exam at the end of Year 12.

You then go on to study the subject at A2 Level in Year 13. Your grade will be based on both your AS and A2 exams.

Subjects which are still modular at AS/A2 include:

Creative WritingElectronics Film Studies Further MathsMaths

Music TechnologyMedia StudiesPhilosophyPoliticsTurkish

WHAT YOU STUDYCity and Islington College offers over 30 different subjects to choose from at A Level.

In addition to the subjects above, we offer a range of subjects in the linear model, including Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Computer Science, Dance, Drama and Theatre Studies, Economics, English Language and Literature, Fine Art, French, German, Geography, Graphic Communication, History, History of Art, Italian, Music, Photography, Psychology, Physics, Religious Studies, Sociology, Spanish and Textiles/Fashion.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTSCompleted a secondary or high school level of education in home country with documented evidence of grades equivalent to UK GCSEs in five subjects at a minimum of grade C (or equivalent) or aboveEnglish language requirement; IELTS Overall Score of 5.5 (with no element less than 5.0)Minimum age of 16 years

In addition to the above general criteria for A Level courses, you must satisfy individual course entry criteria for your chosen subjects. For example, if you want to study Chemistry A level, you must have at least a grade B in Maths and a Science subject.

EXTRA-CURRICULARA wide range of clubs and societies operate at the Sixth Form College,

including Chemistry Club, Physics Club, History Club, MedicLink (for aspiring medics, run in collaboration with University College, London), Talking Science, Talking Politics and Creative Writing Group.

Organised trips and visits help students to broaden their horizons outside the classroom. Previous visits have included the Houses of Parliament, Warner Brother Studios and a trip to Paris.

Over 30 visiting academics and authors delivered a series of talks at the College in 2014/15. These included Nobel prize-winning astrophysicist Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell, UCL Professor of English John Mullins, anthropologist Professor Judith Okely, University College biologist Professor Steve Jones and writer and commentator Owen Jones.

STUDENT VOICE

Our Student Union provides an opportunity for you to get in involved in the way the College is run by becoming a Class or Centre Representative.

The “Student Voice” is an integral part of the College, and the Student Union President sits on the Governing Body as a Student Governor. You can represent your peers and take a central role in improving the College for all students. Taking part in extra-curricular activities will not only distinguish you from your peers but will also add valuable experience to your CV.

TRIPS

Our programme of organised visits helps you to broaden your horizons outside the classroom. Some form part of your course, while others, such as trips to exhibitions and the theatre, are open to all. Last year’s highlights included:

Business students’ visit to the ITV recording studios Animal Management students’ visit to the Sustainability Centre A Level Media students’ visit to Warner Bros. Studios Sixth Form students’ visit to the Houses of Parliament Philosophy and French students’ visit to Paris

JACK PETCHEY AWARDS

Each year, students attend the Jack Petchey Awards Ceremony at Islington Assembly Hall in January. The event honours young winners aged 11-25, who have been nominated by their peers and recognised for making a wholehearted, unselfish and dedicated contribution to their club, school or community.

Sixth Form student Hosanna Makanda started her time at college on an ESOL course and is now studying Law at the University of Birmingham. On winning her Jack Petchey award, Hosanna was “impressed with how the Jack Petchey Foundation supports young people in Islington and across the country”.

This year, 45 of the College’s students received achievement awards, receiving a framed certificate, medallion and £200 to be spent on additional activities or new equipment for their centre of study.

VISITING ACADEMICS AND AUTHORS

Each term, we have a series of talks at the College by leading university academics and authors. Last year, the Sixth Form College had over 30 visitors, including Nobel prize-winning astrophysicist Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell, UCL Professor of English John Mullins, anthropologist Professor Judith Okely, University College biologist Professor Steve Jones and writer and commentator Owen Jones.

Once you’ve decided what to study at City and Islington College, you need to consider London living costs too. This will help you to plan the financial commitment that you and/or your parents will need to make.

TRAVELLING TO COLLEGE

City and Islington College operates from five different centres, all of which are conveniently located a short walk from a London underground tube station (Zone 2). A student travel card (known as an Oyster card) can be purchased for unlimited travel on tube, bus and train. The cost of a monthly student travel card for Zones 1 – 4 depends on your age: £88.80 if you are aged 16-18 or £123.70 if you are over 18.

ACCOMMODATION

We work with local accommodation providers to offer you a choice of high quality options, including:

Homestay: This is the preferred and recommended option for under-18s. However, over-18s can also use this option for their first few weeks in London while they ‘find their feet’. Homestay

provides you with a ‘home away from home’, where you live with a host family in their home. All Homestay properties are inspected and approved by our Homestay agents, so you are sure to be safe in your ‘new home’.

Homestay prices depend on the Zone and meal options. These can range from £125 per person per week for bed and breakfast in Zone 4 to £225 per person per week in Zone 1 or 2 with one meal included.

Student Residences: These are suitable for over-18s. You would live alongside other students from a range of countries studying a variety of courses at different colleges and universities in London. Most student residences are self-catered and the prices depend on the type of room, location and facilities. Prices can range from £170 to £270 per person per week. There are a number of student residences located close to the College.

The International team will be happy to help you find suitable accommodation for your preference and budget.
