Founded in 1940 as the Society for

Crippled Children, we now serve

children and adults with a broad

range of disabilities and special needs

including autism, cerebral palsy, Down

syndrome, and other physical, develop -

mental, neurological and emotional

challenges. Our unique, comprehensive

service model weaves together education

and autism services; therapy services and

Intensive Therapy Clinic; recreation, camp

and sports programs; and family support

services to meet the needs of the entire

family and provide the best outcomes.

The agency serves children from birth

through adult hood, with a special focus

on children from birth through age five.

Over 2,300 children and adults from

throughout Greater Cleveland and

beyond received services last year at

our three locations, as well as throughout

the community in child care centers,

schools and homes.

Our mission is to enable and empower children with disabilities

and their families to grow, learn, play and prepare for lifelong

achievement in society.

Sally Farwell, President & CEO andMozelle Jackson, Chair, Board of Directors

Dear Friends,What a time of celebration! This year marked the 75th anniversary of the AchievementCenters for Children. For seventy-five wonderful years we have remained true to ourmission to enable and empower children with disabilities and their families to grow, learn, play and prepare for lifelong achievement in society. Though the specific needs of thefamilies have changed over the years and in response so have our programs and services, we remain steadfast in our commitment to help our clients, from newborns to adults, realize their greatest potential.

While by their very nature, milestones and anniversaries cause us to think of the past,to analyze our responses to challenges and to celebrate our successes (of which there havebeen many), milestones and anniversaries are also important reminders that we must alwaysbe looking towards the future. We will continue to face challenges in our next seventy-fiveyears, but we will also continue to succeed. One of the things that makes the AchievementCenters for Children different is our ability and commitment to adapt to any environmentin which we find ourselves so that we can continue to provide the excellent programmingour clients and the community have come to expect.

As we step into our seventy-sixth year, we reaffirm that commitment. We remaininspired by our clients, our community of supporters and volunteers, and our staff. Theyremind us that in our centers, in our classrooms, and in our camps, successes are not limitedto landmark events. With our clients we experience successes every day—a first word, a firststep, an ability to cope—and these successes, though they may appear small to the outsideworld, are far more momentous occasions than any anniversary this agency could have.

The world is an ever-changing place. Change and transition, however, bringpossibilities and opportunities: possibilities to develop more and stronger strategic allianceswith our partners, and opportunities to develop innovative programming and services. Wewill continue to work to ensure excellence in all of our programs. We will continue to buildour early intervention services, services which have been proven to give the majority ofchildren the best long term outcomes. In short, we will continue to do what we have alwaysdone: strive to improve the lives of children and adults with disabilities and their families.

Thank you for celebrating with us. Thank you for your support during these past 75years. Thank you for your support as we step into the future.

Sincerely,

Sally Farwell, MEdPresident and CEO

t the Achievement Centers, we are focused on helping children with disabilities reach

their greatest potential. What is a person’s “greatest potential”? For Sarah Dooley, the

sky is the limit. For the first time in her 18 years, Sarah is “talking” through a

communications application on her iPad which is connected to a “head array”

control system installed on her wheelchair. She uses her head to navigate through the

application and make selections of letters and words. When Sarah finishes a sentence, the

application reads it back using the British accent she chose, giving her a “voice.” The strength

and improved coordination Sarah developed in her physical therapy and Intensive Therapy

sessions at the Achievement Centers for Children prepared her to use this device in an

innovative way. She now shops at the mall, orders her own meals at restaurants, talks with

her friends and family, and is active on social media. What a gift of independence!

Sarah said her dream is to “change the world one kid at a time.” Since gaining her

“voice,” she has been working with Felicia Baird, her speech-language pathologist

at the Achievement Centers, to write a story about her life experiences, and

what it means to have cerebral palsy. Her goal is to visit

schools to share her story with children to help them

understand what it’s like to have cerebral palsy, and

to see all that she can—and is—accomplishing.

Ultimately, she would like to be a guest on the Ellen

DeGeneres Show to reach an even larger audience. With Sarah’s

new found abilities, she will be able to share her personal insights

with so many people in the coming years!

We can only imagine how additional new technologies and innovative

techniques will open new worlds of possibilities, hope and

opportunities for children with disabilities in the future.

hanna, eleven years old, looks forward to riding his favorite horse, Kirby,

each week in his therapeutic horseback riding class. Everyone at “the barn”

at Camp Cheerful and his family is so proud of the progress he has made since

starting his lessons. Channa has autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Down

syndrome and low muscle tone, so his horseback riding helps him in a variety

of important ways: physically, cognitively and by providing sensory stimulation.

He thinks he’s just having fun with his favorite horse!

Channa was a student in our autism school in Westlake and received physical

therapy, occupational therapy and speech-language sessions. His mother said,

“It was wonderful how all the therapists and teachers worked together to

help Channa make the most progress. It was so helpful for us to have

all his therapies at one place!”

Therapeutic horseback riding complemented Channa’s therapies by

strengthening his core body muscles. This helped him learn to walk

without the use of a walker, and now helps him sit proudly on his horse.

He loves to ride through our special winding sensory trail in the woods

where he can feel different materials under the horse’s feet, from the

wooden bridge to stone pebbles and soft pine needles.

Using a special bareback pad helps Channa better feel the

movement of the horse and connect it to his own body

movements. Being able to participate in a recreational

activity is an important part of Channa’s life, and these

benefits—physical, cognitive, and sensory—will

continue with him well into his future.

arb Obiaya never imagined when she attended camp during her summers as a child

that she was preparing for her life’s career of nearly 40 years (and counting) at the

Achievement Centers for Children. She was fortunate to have attended a camp in the

woods of Missouri that was ahead of its time integrating children with many

different kinds of disabilities with typically developing children for all to enjoy activities

together and develop lifelong friendships. It is here that her desire to work with children

with special needs began.

After earning her Master’s Degree in Social Work from Case Western Reserve University,

Barb joined the staff of the Achievement Centers in 1976 (then known as the Society for

Crippled Children), providing counseling during the school year and spending her

summers at Camp Cheerful as the camp social worker. She was thrilled to find an

opportunity that combined her three special interests: social work, children with

disabilities, and camping. After six years as the camp social worker, Barb

became the Director of Social Work/Family Support Services. Through

Barb’s commitment to the mission and her expertise, our Family Support

Services program grew and now provides a full spectrum of early

intervention and behavioral health programs to maximize development

and quality of life and build on family strengths.

Barb shared that “being able to see the progression of individuals who

started at the Achievement Centers receiving services as toddlers develop

into resilient and resourceful adults has been the most rewarding aspect of

my job.” We are so appreciative of her dedication and commitment to our

mission demonstrated through her lifelong passion for working with

children with disabilities and their families. She has had

immeasurable impact on the many families she has helped,

and the staff members and social work interns she has

mentored throughout the years! Congratulations, Barb,

on your lifelong career with the Achievement Centers!

Our 75th anniversary is the perfect occasion to honor

our founding organization, The Rotary Club of Cleveland.

It is because of their vision and commitment to improving the lives of children with

disabilities 75 years ago that we are able to celebrate this important milestone.

In 1940, at a time when the world was at war and polio cases were prevalent, the

Rotary Club of Cleveland supervised the establishment and growth of a variety of

services to children with disabilities in our organization’s early years as The Society

for Crippled Children. The founders of the organization, Cleveland Rotarians

Frederick T. McGuire, Jr., Tris Speaker and George Gund had a strong commitment

to making their vision a reality and signed the paperwork to incorporate the organization

in 1945. In 1947–48, the Rotary Club made a further commitment to assist children

with disabilities by starting Camp Cheerful in Strongsville. Cabins were constructed and

roads were built into Camp Cheerful, and the camp was opened as the first residential

camp in Ohio designed especially for those with disabilities.

Throughout the years, their caring and generous support for the programs and projects

of the Achievement Centers for Children and Camp Cheerful has continued. Buildings

were constructed including the Great Hall and additional cabins at Camp Cheerful,

“camperships” have allowed many children from low income families to attend camp, and

many other projects were completed thanks to dedicated members of the Rotary Club.

Last year, when our Camp Cheerful faced extensive damages from a storm, the Cleveland

Rotary Foundation, Rotary District 6630 and Rotary International joined together to

provide much needed funding to repair the swimming pool and provide a new pool cover.

The Rotary Club of Cleveland’s commitment to living their motto “Service Above Self ”

is evidenced by their ongoing focus on making a difference in the lives of children and

adults with disabilities in our community. We look forward to the many ways we will

continue together to give brighter futures to children with disabilities and their families!

As we mark 75 years of our journey helping children with disabilities and their families,

we are moved to recognize and express our sincere appreciation to a dedicated corporate

supporter and true partner of the Achievement Centers for Children that has been beside

us every step of the way. From providing leadership on our Board of Directors, to hands-on

volunteer work by employees, to important and generous financial support, KeyBank and

its predecessor banks have always been a committed and caring partner in fulfilling our

mission and vision.

Throughout the years, community involvement always has been a core value of the

corporate culture. Generous financial contributions were made by KeyBank (or predecessor

banks) throughout the Achievement Centers’ history, and records show that from 1999

to the present day, KeyBank has provided contributions totaling over one-half million

dollars. Most recently, in honor of our 75th anniversary, they provided funding to host

Dr. Stephen Shore, autism expert, to speak at The City Club Forum as part of KeyBank’s

“Diversity Thought Leadership” series in April.

We have been privileged to have had KeyBank leadership (or an employee of a

predecessor bank) serve on our Board of Directors for decades, providing their expertise

and guidance. Groups of caring employees through KeyBank’s “Neighbors Make the

Difference Day” program have made substantial improvements for children and adults

to enjoy at Camp Cheerful.

“We applaud the Achievement Centers for Children for the positive impact their programs

and services have had in our community for the past 75 years. We are very proud to have

been a supportive partner with them through the years, helping to improve the

lives of thousands of children and adults with disabilities in our community.

We look forward to our continued relationship to benefit all in our

community,” said Margot James Copland, Chair and

CEO, KeyBank Foundation.

We are grateful for our partnership with KeyBank and look

forward to stepping into the future together!

Pat Nobili Bids Farewell while Sally Farwell Steps into CEO Position

Pat Nobili retired as President and CEO

in February after 21 years of outstanding

service. Sally Farwell, who has been with

the Achievement Centers for 19 years,

brings her inspiring vision and commitment

to the agency’s future.

In Celebration of our 75th Anniversary!

In honor of Autism

Awareness Month

and our 75th

anniversary, the

Achievement

Centers, together

with The City Club

of Cleveland and

KeyBank, hosted Dr. Stephen Shore, inter-

national speaker and professor specializing

in autism, at The City Club Forum on Friday,

April 17. It was rebroadcast on WCPN

and WVIZ radio stations.

“Exceptional” 4-Star Rated Charity

For the third consecutive year, Charity

Navigator awarded their highest rating to

the Achievement Centers. Only 12% of the

charities they rate nationally have received

at least three consecutive 4-star evaluations.

RECREATION AND SPORTS

 The new Camp Cheerful Clubhouse

building was constructed in time for this

year’s camp season. Growth of recreation

programs and the year-round River Rock

Adult Day program called for a larger,

more modern “home.” We are grateful for

the generous community support that

made this important improvement a reality.

Highlights Over the past five years our Adapted

Sports program grew to include 188

athletes with special needs and abilities

and 245 volunteers this past year. Our

Adapted Football athletes were thrilled to

have players from the Cleveland Browns

join them on our field for skills training!

 Our Therapeutic Horsemanship program’s

248 volunteers, staff, and instructors along

with our eleven gentle horses gave a total

of 3,752 riding lessons to children and

adults with and without disabilities last year.

EDUCATION

Our autism school expanded to include

7th and 8th grades at our Westlake cam-

pus. Last year students gained practical

experience and life skills by packaging

dog treats for “Trendi Paws,” a locally

owned dog bakery and dog boutique.

Teachers provided step-by-step guidance

and visual supports to help students pro-

vide a quality service. Thank you to Trendi

Paws for this opportunity for our students!

We were honored in March to have

visitors from The Jewish Family Center in

St. Petersburg, Russia come to learn more

about our highly successful autism school

and see our classrooms first hand.

The grand opening

and ribbon cutting

ceremony for the

new Camp

Cheerful Clubhouse

was held in June.

ACHIEVE CONSULTING

A one-day training, “Successfully Including

Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder in

the General Education Setting” was

presented by our consultants for 60 faculty

members of St. Peter’s Parish in Mansfield,

Ohio. Our consultants also provided profes-

sional development to all Shaker Heights

City School District paraprofessionals to

help them work successfully with students

with autism spectrum disorder.

THERAPY SERVICES

Our speech-language pathologists, as

well as others in our community, received

specialized training by guest expert, Rona

Alexander, PhD, CCC-SLP, C/NDT who led

the workshop “Oral Motor Feeding/

Swallowing and Respiratory Coordination

Function in Children with Neuromuscular

Involvement” at our Westlake site in June.

So many children will benefit from this added

professional knowledge and expertise!

FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICES

Thanks to funding from United Way of

Greater Cleveland, we began a new Social

Emotional Learning program, providing

consultation to three preschool classrooms

in the Warrensville Heights School District.

In addition, we expanded our Early

Childhood Mental Health program, our

Head Start consultation, and added a

comprehensive initial family assessment

component to our Help Me Grow Home

Visiting program.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Our four major special events held each

year are generously supported by individuals

and our business community. Together,

through all our fundraising events, initiatives

and appeals, donors contributed a total of

more than $1.5 million, enabling us to

provide many services regardless of a

family’s ability to pay.

Sparkle, Shimmer and Shine, our annual

formal gala, honored Bruce Higley, Chairman

of The Albert M. Higley Company, for his

long-time support and heartfelt commitment

to the Achievement Centers for Children.

Over 460 guests attended, raising more

than $489,000.

25th Annual A Most Excellent Race

Rain this year did not keep our participants,

sponsors and volunteers from helping to

reach our goal of $115,000! A special thank

you to our Presenting Sponsor, Majestic

Steel USA, and to all who came out to sup-

port us.

Fall Festival at Camp Cheerful exceeded

our goal by raising over $74,000 this year!
