Introduction – What is Achtung!Cthulhu?

Three Kings is the first scenario in the Zero Point cam-paign, an epic and episodic series of adventures for the

Achtung! Cthulhu setting. Achtung! Cthulhu is a set-ting for Lovecraftian roleplaying in World War Two, al-lowing you to play investigators uncovering the terriblesecrets of the Lovecraftian Mythos which threaten theworld when humankind is already poised to tear itselfapart.

This version of Three Kings is intended for use withthe Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game, published byChaosium, Inc. Everything else you need can be foundthere. Pre-generated characters, created using the 6thedition Call of Cthulhu rules, are provided in AppendixOne on page 29, below; you can also create your owninvestigator characters using the Call of Cthulhu rules.

OverviewIt’s summer, 1939, and a shadow is falling over Europe.Czechoslovakia has been invaded by the Third Reich,and the country dismembered. In its place, the Nazishave declared a “Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia”,centred on the former capital of Prague. And yet, amidstthe restive populace in the surrounding countryside,resistance is growing—led by a triumvirate of patriotsknown only as the “Three Kings”.

The British government, not yet at war with NaziGermany, has received intelligence from the nascentCzechoslovak “government-in-exile” in London that aCzech priest working for the resistance in the vicinityof Prague has information about atrocities committed

by the Third Reich—information which will providepriceless propaganda if war does break out. According toBritish intelligence, the priest—codename ANGEL—ishiding Czechoslovakian children and preventing themfrom being transported to Castle Karlstein, some 25

miles (appx. 40 kilometres) southwest of Prague, report-edly where the atrocities have been committed. Britishintelligence is also very interested in any possible mili-tary significance to these atrocities.

Under instruction from the mysterious “SectionD”, part of the British secret intelligence service, theBritish army has assembled a special operations group to

Of course, Achtu n g! Cthulhu presents a fictionalised

version of the Second World War, where the Lo vecraftian

M ythos is real and its agents work to bring humankind to

its doom. Ho we ver, man y of the figures behind the larger

e vents of the war which form the background to these

ad ventures were real people, and in man y cases national

heroes.

In T hree Kin gs, four of the characters the in vestigators

might meet are historical figures, and heroes of the war.

The y are: Frantisek Mora vec, the head of Czechoslo vakian

militar y intelligence in London in 1939; and Josef Masin,

Vacla v Mora vek, and Josef Balaban, the “ Three Kings” of

the title, who ga ve their li ves for their countr y’s freedom

during the war. You can find out lots more online about the

heroic actions of these remarkable people.

Wha t i s “ Se c t i on D” ?“Section D” is a section of the Br itish Secr et Intelligence Ser v ice (also know n as MI6) f or med a little ov er a y ear agoin Mar ch 1938 to car r y out par amilitar y and cov er t politicalactions, including pr opaganda and sabotage, against an enemy dur ing w ar time. In 1939 and the ear ly months of the w ar , Section D is based at the Metr opole Hotel, on the cor ner of Nor thumber land Place and W hitehall in centr al London, close to th

e hear t of the Br itish gov er nment.In the summer of 1939, Section D is under the comman

of Ma jor Law r ence Gr and, and is still v er y much f inding its w ay , dev eloping its oper ational str uctur es, and lear ning to w or k w ith its allies, and in par ticular helping the USA dev elop its ow n intelligence ef f or ts. As its r ole in aiding r esistance f or ces under Nazi domination becomes mor e impor tant, it w ill f or m a key component in the new Special Oper ations Executiv e (the f amous “Baker Str eet Ir r egular s”), established in mid-1940.

parachute into occupied Czechoslovakia to contact theCzech resistance. The operations group is undercover,not in military uniform, and will likely be shot as spiesif captured by the Nazis. They are each given poisoncapsules to take in the event of capture. Briefed at theSection D headquarters in central London by Czechresistance leader in exile, Frantisek Moravec (see box,and briefing summary in Appendix Three , page 36), andprovided with a handwritten letter of introduction byhim (with no reference to the British government, whoare determined to maintain deniability), their mission isto establish communications with the resistance on the

ground (including, if possible, contacting a group of re-sistance leaders known as the “Three Kings”), contactCodename ANGEL, find out just what the Nazi atroci-ties at Castle Karlstein are, and return with the infor-mation. They should also take any measures to preventthese atrocities from continuing.

The players take the roles of this operations group—investigators with a military bent and a desperate, clan-destine cause. Pre-generated characters can be found inAppendix One (see page 29).

THE REAL DEALThe truth of what is happening in Castle Karlstein—unknown to the British—is far worse. Over the pastfew years, an evil Nazi scientist by the name of HerrDoktor Graf Ernst von Kammerstein has been conduct-ing nightmarish experiments on prisoners and othervictims. Since the invasion of Czechoslovakia, he hasmoved to Castle Karlstein for reasons unknown, and hasbegun using the cowed population as a ready source ofexperimental test subjects. Codename ANGEL is sav-ing the children from a fate worse than death! However,the Nazis are gradually closing in on his undergroundrailroad.

But there’s a twist. Codename ANGEL is not whathe first seems. The Czech priest, one Father Andrej, be-gan as a well-meaning but desperate individual, willingto do just about anything to rescue those he consideredunder his care. In saving the children (and some adults)from the Nazi clutches, he has got too close to Doktorvon Kammerstein’s work, and has discovered what he’struly up to (see page 16). The revelation of the reality ofthe Cthulhu Mythos and the power of magic has brokenhis mind; he has tried to use its unholy power for good,rationalising that a little evil in the service of a greater

good is justifiable. In doing so, Father Andrej has saveda lot of lives, but at the cost of his sanity. At the mercyof an overweening Messiah complex, he now truly be-lieves he is an “angel”, come to deliver mankind fromthe devil’s clutches.

The investigators must decide what to do withCodename ANGEL. He’s certifiable, but handled cor-rectly his real heroism could make great propaganda for

the British and the cause of the Three Kings—or cause ahorrific scandal if the truth leaked out...

A veteran of the Great War (in which he fought in the

Austro-Hungarian Arm y) and former PO W, af ter the war

Mora vec fought against the Hungarian and Slo vak Soviet

R epublic and eventually joined militar y intelligence. From

1937 to 1939 he was head of Czechoslo vak militar y intel-

ligence in Prague.

On the e vening of the 1 4th of March, 1939, Mora vec

secretly f le w out of Prague’s R uzyne Airport in a chartered

KLM Douglas DC-3 with ten of his f ello w intelligence of fic-

ers. Tipped of f b y agents operating in Nazi German y, the y

had received inf ormation that the German in vasion and

subsequent occupation of Czechoslo vakia was to take place

the f ollo wing da y. Stopping brief l y at R otterdam, their f inal

destination was London Croydon Airport; in their posses-

sion— their most valuable f iles and archives, handed o ver to

the British Secret Intelligence Service to be used against the Third R eich.

Almost f rom his arrival in London, Moravec has kept in

secret radio contact with the Czech resistance group known

as the Three Kings. Later, f rom 19 40, he will also serve as

the head of the intelligence service of th e Czechoslo vakian

Government-in-Exile.

Three Kings

Plot Episodes There are many ways the investigators can tackle theevents of Three Kings. The following episodes deal withsome of the most likely ones, presented in roughly theorder they may occur in. Each episode comprises anumber of scenes: depending on the investigators’ ac-tions, these may or may not happen. Use this section asyou see fit: Keepers should be flexible with any reason-able and well thought-out plan of action the investiga-tors come up with to achieve their goal.

EPISODE ONE:GETTING IN

This episode deals with the investigators’ arrival inthe heavily forested area around Castle Karlstein tothe southwest of Prague, in the Nazi-occupied formerCzechoslovakia. By the end of the episode, the inves-tigators may have mounted a daring rescue to contactthe resistance.

Scene One: Parachute!The investigators are parachuted into occupiedCzechoslovakia aboard an RAF Armstrong WhitworthWhitley. The drop zone is in the lightly populated

The Armstrong W hit worth A W 38 W hitle y is one of the

three t win-engine medium bombers in ser vice with the

British R o yal Air Force (the R AF). It’s used for maritime

reconnaissance, training, to wing gliders, and also

transporting troops.

Because of design constraints, the W hitle y flies with

a distinct “nose-do wn” attitude, and experiences con-

siderable drag. It has a po wered nose turret and also a

retractable h ydraulic ventral turret with t wo machine guns

( which also adds to the drag when deplo yed). It has a full

cre w of fi ve. It’s specificall y designed for use as a night

bomber, although of course its mission to the former

Czechoslo vakia is to drop an entirel y different pa yload!

In 1939, the British arm y is still experimenting with

the idea of parachuting troops behind enem y lines. The

W hitle y used b y the in vestigators is a speciall y con verted

model with the rear turret remo ved to allo w parachutists

to jump from the plane.

This option still provides reasonably action-orientedcharacters, with access to weapons and probably with sig-nificant weapons skills.

Alternate Beginning Scene:The University of Prague

This alternate beginning provides an entry point to the

events of Three Kings for academic characters. In this in-stance, the investigators may be lecturers or staff at the“University of Prague” (or one of them—see “UniversityWars!”, below), or visiting lecturers or specialists fromother establishments on a lecturing tour or researchsabbatical.

In such a case, the hook to get these academics in-volved is less the rumours of the atrocities, and morethe possibility of dangerous research being undertakenat the Castle. “Dangerous” may refer to papers issued byDoktor von Kammerstein on eugenic applications of cut-

ting edge medical science, including some truly horrificpractises relating to sterilisation and euthanasia—thencurrent in the Third Reich (and indeed elsewhere in theworld). Alternatively, it may refer to a suspected occultelement in Doktor von Kammerstein’s work; one of theinvestigators hears rumours at the University of the theftof a “Book of Shadows” from Castle Karlstein—a refer-ence which the investigator understands as referring toan occult and Mythos tome of great power. Rumours ofatrocities at the castle only serve to make Doktor vonKammerstein’s activities even more suspect.

This option provides a less combat-oriented, militaryapproach, and a more conventional Call of Cthulhu sce-nario—at least to begin with!

Scene Two: The Firing SquadIf the investigators land close to Castle Karlstein, thisscene is automatic; otherwise, a successful Listen roll isrequired.

In the distance, the investigators can hear gunfire.A successful Track roll is required to locate the source,which is a Heer command post where soldiers are inter-rogating 4 members of the Czech resistance then execut-ing them.

This scene may play out in various ways. If the inves-tigators are close to Castle Karlstein, the interrogationmay be inside the castle itself, or in Karlstein village be-low; otherwise, the Keeper should choose an appropriatelocation (probably the nearest village, or other suitableplace).

The investigators may be able to stage a rescue; foran interrogation outside Castle Karlstein, figure a totalof 1 German Heer soldier per investigator, plus 1 officerand 1 interrogator. If a firefight breaks out, the local areawill be on alert (see page 6); if the investigators can bestealthy (no guns!), then they may be able to keep theirpresence quiet.

If the interrogation is taking place inside CastleKarlstein, then a rescue may be out of the question; how-ever, see Episode Four—An Unspeakable Evil (page15) for how to get into the castle.

A successful rescue will automatically put the inves-tigators in touch with members of the Czech resistance.Otherwise, see Episode Two below.

Uni ve r s i t y Wa r s !T her e are actually two univ er sities in Pr ague, w ith the same name and the same history—and r elations betw een them ar e ter r ible, especially since the Occupation.

Histor ically ther e w as only a single C harles-F erdinand U niversity in Pr ague, an ancient and r espected mediaev al establishment. In 1882, ethnic tensions betw

een Czechs and Germans in the city caused the univ er sity to split into tw o halv es—one Czech, one Ger man, w ith dif f erent staf f, curr icula, and student bodies. R elationships betw een the tw o w er e stor my and of ten v iolent, w ith the Czech univ er-sity gener ally gett ing the upper hand.

T hat all changed w ith the Occupation. Since then, the Ger man univ er sity (r e-named the Deutsche K arls-U niversität in P ra g , or “Ger man Charles Univ er sity in Pr ague”) has been in the ascendant ov er the Czech U niversita K arla (or “Char les Univ er sity”).

For academic inv estigator s, this unlikely set-up can be a goldmine, as both univ er sities are hiv es of intr igue and academic backstabbing—and the Czech univ er sity likely has connections w ith the r esistance. W hich univ er sity do the inv estigator s w ork f or ? W hose side are they on? And just w hat lengths ar e their r espective f aculties pr epar ed to go to, to keep or gain the upper hand?

EPISODE TWO:THE RESISTANCE

In this episode, the investigators make contact with lo-cal representatives of the Czech resistance. By the endof the episode, they should be in a position to meet both

Father Andrej—Codename ANGEL—and the ThreeKings.

Scene One: Finding the ResistanceThere are various ways for the investigators to find theresistance; the most obvious is to rescue them from Naziclutches in the “Firing Squad” scene above. Failing that,the investigators are going to have to try and makecontact via more surreptitious means—making contactwith local villagers, observing comings and goings in the

communities, and so on. Rolls like Psychology (or maybeeven Anthropology) can identify a potential contact,upon whom Persuade or Fast Talk rolls may be made;otherwise such rolls are Difficult (halved). Investigators

may even threaten or intimidate villagers (not usuallythe best option), or make their presence obvious (risk-ing being betrayed to the Nazis), or try and help the vil-lagers (perhaps with First Aid or Medicine rolls) to wintheir trust. The Keeper should allow any reasonably well

Listen rolls. Investigators garner one item of informationfrom the following list for each successful roll, or twoitems on a Special result (less than 1/5 of the requiredresult). Items are presented in order of obscurity.

• Father Andrej is a local priest wanted by the Nazisand hiding somewhere in the wild.

• He was the priest of the church at Krupna, a tinyvillage just outside Karlstein. People always said hewas exceptionally kind—a true angel.

• He can be contacted via the resistance—if you canfind them.

• Three times in the past three months he has rescued

groups of imprisoned locals and other captives fromthe Nazis; two of these were groups of children, res-cued from Castle Karlstein itself, the third was dur-ing an attack on a Nazi transport coming to Karlsteinfrom the town of Beraun, several miles to the northof the Karlstein area, and was a group comprisingboth children and adults.

• After each rescue, the Nazis have repeatedly searchedhouses in the vicinity, looking for something. They

tortured and killed Father Pavel of Karlstein churchafter the first rescue, and executed five villagers fromSerbst in reprisals after the third, most recent rescue.

in London by radio to confirm. Only then will they bewilling to meet with the investigators.

The results of this meeting vary widely. At the veryleast, an avenue has been established by which Britishintelligence and the mysterious “Section D” (see page 3)can directly contact the upper echelons of the Czech re-sistance, itself very valuable. In more concrete terms, theinvestigators will be given the support of the local resist-ance, up to and including military support in any assaultor attempt to enter Karlstein castle (see “Father Andrej’sPlan” and Episode Four , below).

Note that the Three Kings don’t live in the vicinityof Karlstein. In fact, they’re constantly on the move. Anymeeting with the investigators will take place deep in theforests at a considerable distance from Karlstein; gettingthere and avoiding Nazi patrols may be an adventure initself!

Scene Two: Hidden AngelGetting to meet Father Andrej Cerny, CodenameANGEL, is easier than the Three Kings, but not much.He’s not only deeply paranoid, but also extremely ec-centric (uncharitable types might say unhinged...), andwill take elaborate and often unintelligible precautionsbefore finally coming face to face with the investigators.

Father Andrej is in hiding—the whole of Bohemia isout looking for him—but he nevertheless keeps himselfwithin half a day’s march of Castle Karlstein, as it is thecentre of all his plans.

Father Andrej CernyCodename: ANGEL

The Czech Resistance HeroFather Andrej is a local hero of the Czech resistance,credited with saving many Czech children from terri-ble fates at the hands of the monstrous Nazi scientist inKarlstein castle, Doktor Ernst von Kammerstein. He isbrave, selfless, and dedicated to the point of obsession,

clutching with him an ancient and worn tome, whichpeople naturally assume is the Bible.

However, it isn’t the Bible—it’s the ancient tomeknown as the Schatten des Ewigen Dunkels (“the Shadowsof the Eternal Dark”—see page 15)—which he stole from

von Kammerstein’s laboratory. Because Father Andrej isinsane: the things he has seen in Castle Karlstein andread in this “Book of Shadows” have unhinged his mind,and he now believes himself to be on a divine mission torid his land of the Nazi stain. He has fixated on rescuingchildren as his goal, and shows little concern for rescuingadults—a clear sign of his broken mind, and somethingwhich has recently caused friction within the local resist-ance, and a near breakdown in his relations with VaclavZajic (page 27). He’s willing to do anything to achieve his

uggestion that the screams may be from adults, too). This is Father Andre j’s price for his full cooperation w ith the Br itish intelligence team—although,as w ill become clear, he has little intention of fulf illing anypr omises.

Father Andr ej’s rescue is a lie. His studies of th e Shad ows o f the Eterna l Dark hav e discov er ed in its pages aspell unknow n to Doktor von Kammer stein— a r itual called “Dev ouring R etribution”, w hich Father Andre j believ es w illsummon a div ine f or ce to do his bidding and rid Karlstein of its Nazi occupier s once and f or all. In reality this is a

Summon Shoggoth spell, and it w ill do no such th ing: in-stead, it w ill simply r elease an uncontr olled and r ampaging shoggoth into the Kar lstein vicinity for sev er al hours, duringw hich time it w ill dev our anything alive it finds— the Nazis, the captives, the local villagers, even the investigators.

Father Andr ej w ill help organise his “rescue mission”,using whatever f or ces he, the inv estigators, and the r esist-ance can muster; Vaclav Zajic, the resistance leader (page27), may provide a number of r esistance cells to help outif he considers it necessary. How ev er , once Father Andr ej passes thr ough the Second Gate of the castle (location # 4on th e castle map on page 19), he w ill immediately br eakof f f rom the main assault on the Great Tow er (location#13), and instead head to the upper battlements of the W ell Tow er (location #3), ov er looking the castle and the village below, w hich he has identified in the Book of Shadow s asthe place to car ry out the “Great Mass” which w ill summonthe “divine force” (the shoggoth)...

EPISODE FOUR: AN UNSPEAKABLE EVIL

This is the climactic episode of the adventure—whenthe investigators come face-to-face with the Mythos se-cret at the heart of the Nazi atrocities at Castle Karlstein.There are many ways to play this episode, from a full-scale assault with resistance fighter support, to a stealthraid on the Great Tower at the urging of Father Andrej.The key is that if at all possible Father Andrej shouldbe along—it is his sudden and insane betrayal that pro-vides the “twist” at the scenario’s conclusion (see “TheRitual” below).

until recently Professor of Medicine at HeidelbergUniversity, von Kammerstein has travelled to Karlsteinfollowing the whispers of the “points of power” atthe castle in the ancient grimoire Schatten des EwigenDunkels (“Shadows of the Eternal Dark”) which was un-til recently in his possession.

For years von Kammerstein has been obsessed with“reanimation”—the possibility of restoring life to thedead. In recent years his work has come to the attentionof the more esoteric branches of Heinrich Himmler’s SS,and von Kammerstein has been encouraged in his obses-sion, and given what he needs to pursue his research, inthe form of a fully outfitted laboratory at Castle Karlsteinand access to any number of “test subjects”. This con-nection with Himmler will be of great interest to British

intelligence, and is also of significance to the Zero Point campaign (see page 23).Von Kammerstein’s work requires him to work on

corpses—the fresher the better. After years of scrab-bling for dead bodies and achieving mediocre results,the occupation of the former Czechoslovakia has comeas a gift, and recently he’s been killing subjects himselfkidnapped from the local subject population, to try andsubsequently raise them, in his clinical, white-tiled labo-ratory in Castle Karlstein’s Great Tower (location #13).

Using Obersturmführer Schlachter’s SS group attacheddirectly to his staff, whole families of locals and inmatesfrom nearby prisons have been rounded up as “test sub-jects” (not just children, as Father Andrej has probablyhad the investigators believe).

Von Kammerstein’s goal, blessed by Himmler and theSS, is to create “super soldiers”—soldiers raised from thedead can hardly be killed again! Up to now the results ofthe experiments in his terrifying laboratory have been“disappointing”—shambling, derisory shadows of people,merely animated corpses which continue to rot and de-cay. He has these “zombies” stored in the dungeon be-neath the Great Tower. In extremis, von Kammersteincan command these “Ungeziefer” (“vermin”) to attackthe investigators—and potentially the rest of the town.

Some three months ago, at the very beginning of hisexperiments at Castle Karlstein (and indeed the Germanoccupation itself), a minor disaster struck: the “Czechresistance” (in actual fact it was Father Andrej, actingalone) broke into his laboratories and disrupted his earlyexperiments, releasing four children from his store of testsubjects. Worse, they stole the Book of Shadows, his prizedand ancient grimoire. Although this hasn’t stopped hiswork—von Kammerstein has long since learned what heneeds from the book—the loss has infuriated him, and

he has disco vered in the Book of Shado ws to be ancient

records of an essentially scientif ic procedure. His labora-

tor y in the Great To wer of Castle Karlstein is a grotesque

mishmash of mad scientist clichés: retorts and alembics

boil, distil, and concoct the various “animator y applica-

tions” and “re vi vif ying sol vents” required b y the rituals,

made f rom all manner of ingredients, meticulousl y listed in

the doctor’s notes—he still thinks modif ying the ingredi-

ents and the process will “impro ve” the process, and this

is one ma jor strand of his experiments.

Additionall y, his laborator y contains numerous operat-

ing tables, some ob viousl y impro vised, with shackles and

harnesses f or keeping his “patients” immobilised. His ma-

cabre process is to conf ine a hapless victim on one of the tables, and then kill him or her in a specif ic, clinical man-

ner (he has a number of methods he’s experimenting with,

including the macabre equipment and tools required). He

then co vers the corpse with the “re vi vif ying liquid”, and

optionall y lea ves it co vered in the laborator y f or a week (in

the case of the Black Binding ritual), or proceeds immedi-

atel y (f or the Gra y Binding ritual) to intone the recitation

from the Book of Shado ws (this bit particularl y impressed

Himmler...), where he expends the magic points required f or

the ritual to take ef f ect.

W hile the doctor will allo w his t wo sociall y malad justed

assistants to help out in the f irst parts of the procedure, he

alwa ys insists on completing the ritual alone. So f ar, each

time he creates a zombie f rom either ritual, he is disap-

pointed, belie ving the procedure “is not quite right”; he

locks a wa y the hapless victim with all the other Un gezie fer

in the dungeon of the Great To wer, and prepares his next

“test sub ject”.

In vestigators examining the laborator y must make a SAN roll or lose 1D3 points of Sanity; those vie wing the

“re vi vif ication process” risk losing 1D3 / 1D6 points.

same time pr ev enting (by any means necessary) Father Andr e jf r om carr ying out his “Gr eat Mass” at the top of the W ell T ow er.

In all likelihood, how ev er, things w ill probably get outof control. In the v er y w orst case, v on Kammer stein’s zombies could make their w ay out of the castle and into the v illage and sur r ounding lands below , inaugur ating a “night of terr or ”—only to hav e this tur n ev en mor e nightmar ish by Father Andre j summoning the shoggoth, w hich pr omptly sets about dev our ing ev erything in the

distr ict, including Father Andr e j, the local resistance, and—if they’re not extr emely r esourcef ul—the inv estiga-tor s themselv es.

If Father Andre j does succeed in summoning the shoggoth, destr oying it w ill become a pr ior ity f or pretty much anyone in the v icinity. Feel f r ee to hav e the Ger man f or ces embar king on a f ull-scale battle, using their ma-chine guns, half-tr acks, grenades, mortar s, and so on. If things get really out of hand, they may ev en contact the Luftw af f e, and the Karlstein ar ea could f ind itself bombed by Stukas! Scene Two: The Test SubjectsThere are two types of test subjects, and they’re both keptin separate cells in the dungeons of the Great Tower.One cell contains local villagers and other victims takencaptive by Heinrich Schlachter’s SS (see page 25); theyhaven’t yet been used in von Kammerstein’s “experi-ments”, but they’re absolutely terrified. This latest groupof captives contains children as well as adults—FatherAndrej hasn’t been able to rescue them.

The second cell contains what’s left after the Doctor’sexperiments. These are monstrous parodies of life—ani-mated corpses which the doctor calls simply Ungeziefer,or vermin, left over from the Gray Binding and BlackBinding rituals. There are approximately three dozen ofthese, mostly adults, in various stages of decomposition;those which collapse completely are discarded in thecemetery behind the tower (location #14).

The living captives catch glimpses of the Ungeziefer through the bars of their cell doors. Recognising some ofthe zombies as people they once knew, the villagers areunderstandably terrified, and disinclined to draw atten-tion to themselves...

Anyone entering the cell with the Ungeziefer won’tautomatically be attacked, unless someone either attacksthe zombies or orders them to attack. However, just see-ing these damned souls is enough to shatter an investiga-tor’s mind.

In extremis, von Kammerstein will let the Ungeziefer out of the dungeon and order them up and out over theWooden Bridge into the Main Court to engage with any-one attacking the castle.

Scene Three: The Ritual“What the hell is that thing?!?”

The Well Tower (location #3) is an inauspicious place—a lonely and apparently little-used tower far from themain body of the castle. It does indeed contain a well,and also a high battlement above overlooking the heav-ily forested valley down to the river, railway, and village

of Karlstein below.It’s also the location mentioned in the Book ofShadows as ideal for the ritual known as the “DevouringRetribution”. Father Andrej will make a beeline forthis place as soon as his “rescue mission” reaches theBurgrave’s Court (location #5), and immediately com-mence casting the spell. He’ll physically resist any at-tempts to stop him—investigators will need to incapaci-tate the priest to prevent him from completing the rite.A grenade may be a spectacular solution if all else fails.

A Spe c i a l Le t t e rAlthough it’s not necessar y for the ad venture, Keepers

may wish to re veal the link bet ween von Kammerstein’s

work and SS-head Heinrich Himmler. There are se veral

wa ys to do this. First, von Kammerstein has a letter, signed

b y Himmler, explaining how much Himmler values von

Kammerstein’s work, and how f ascinated he is b y the

implications of the “procedures” outlined in th e Book of Shado ws. Himmler concludes by expressing his desire to

visit Castle Karlstein at some point to see the progress of

von Kammerstein’s work.

Von Kammerstein is so proud of this letter he has it in

a frame on the wall of his quarters in the Great To wer.

Secondly, von Kammerstein, like all decent mad sci-

entists, has a tendency to gloat and babble incoherentl y

about the greatness of his work. If the in vestigators are

able to in veigle him into such a rant, he ma y well embark

on a grand exposition of Himmler’s plans for his work on

the Un gezie fer.

Lastl y, Obersturmf ührer Schlachter, th e leader of the

SS detachment guarding von Kammerstein, kno ws that he

was assigned here on order of SS-leader Himmler. And, like

von Kammerstein, he has a tendenc y to gloat, especially

when the Keeper has valuable information to impart!

If he has time, Father Andrej will spend 50 minutesand 10 magic points on the ritual, for a 95% chance ofsuccess. This could be ongoing while the investigatorsare dealing with von Kammerstein and the German op-position. Keep track of the elapsed time; if necessary,Father Andrej will “rush” the ritual, expending fewermagic points for a lower chance of success.

See ”How does this all play out?” above for what hap-pens if Father Andrej is allowed to complete the spell.

Scene Four: Kill Them! Kill them All!At some point this episode is likely to culminate in ahuge, chaotic battle, the climax to the whole adventure.

Depending on how things have gone, all manner ofthings might be going on at once:

• There’s likely to be running battle with the Nazidefenders.

• Father Andrej may be attempting to summon theshoggoth on the battlements on top of the WellTower.

• Doctor von Kammerstein may be fending off the in-vestigators, and sending waves of Ungeziefer zombiesto attack the investigators and even using the livingcaptives as hostages.

Let this climax play out according to the investigators’actions. It could be a bloodbath; alternatively, it couldbe a surgical strike. There are few potential allies amongthe Nazi forces, though it’s possible some of the Gestapo

or lower ranking Heer troops may be induced to see theevil in their midst. As usual, go with any reasonably wellthought-out plan the investigators come up with—anddon’t be afraid to blow the place sky high!

EPISODE FIVE:ESCAPE!

Depending on how the investigators handle the eventsaround Castle Karlstein, questions of their “escape” maybe moot. Indeed, Keepers may simply want to end thesession with the resolution of the battle at Karlstein, assubsequent events are likely to be anticlimactic.

However, in the interests of a neat wrap-up, here aresome ideas for how the investigators may extricate them-selves from the aftermath.

The Night FlightIf the investigators are still in touch with an active re-sistance (ie the shoggoth hasn’t eaten their contacts...),then it’s possible Section D may be able to arrange asecret night flight to pick them up.

The Train, or WorseThe railway line through Karlstein village andHintertrebain runs to Beraun and to Prague, and pro-vides some way of getting out of the immediate areawithout hoofing it through dense forests (have the in-vestigators hide on top of a railway carriage for extratension!). Otherwise, the investigators are on their own;

trekking through occupied Czechoslovakia is hazardousin the extreme. The investigators may try to make iteast through Slovakia and into Poland, or even furtherinto the Soviet Union. As of summer 1939, the Nazishaven’t yet signed the Molotov-Ribbentrop non-aggres-sion treaty with the Soviet Union (that happens roughlya month after the events of Three Kings), so for now atleast the Soviets are no friends of the Nazis, and investi-gators in a very tight spot may head for the border withthe Soviet Union—although that brings a whole raft

Allies and Adversaries

This section presents stat blocks for the key allies andadversaries the investigators may encounter in ThreeKings. It’s not an exclusive list: remember that war hasn’tbroken out in Europe yet, and it’s possible there are evenAmericans, British, French, etc, in and around Pragueon business approved and authorised by the occupy-ing Nazi forces. There may be Russian émigrés, or evenBolsheviks hiding from the Nazis and trying to find theresistance. The Protectorate is a seething melting pot ofintrigue and espionage in the summer of 1939—hencethe ubiquitous paranoia and suspicion—and enterpris-ing investigators may run into all manner of interestingand exotic characters.

THE HEER IN KARLSTEINThe Third Reich occupation force has a strongholdat Castle Karlstein, led by Kommandant HauptmannManfred Kratz—see below. The following stats can beused for any soldiers encountered.

THE SS IN KARLSTEINThe SS ( Schutzstaffel) in the Protectorate are actuallythe Allgemeine SS (the “General SS”); not a militaryunit, but rather raised to enforce Nazi racial doctrineand anti-Semitic ideals in the Third Reich and its oc-cupied territories. In Karlstein the SS detachment underSS-Obersturmführer Heinrich Schlachter acts as a localsecurity police supporting the Gestapo and Doktor vonKammerstein’s staff.

Use the standard stats above (page 24) for troops andofficers in the SS.

Heinrich Schlachter,SS-Obersturmführer

Schlachter’s rise in the SS came following Himmler’s re-organisation after the Night of the Long Knives, whenhis easy approach to skulduggery and violence utterlybereft of personal cunning came to light. Since then hehas been a “man you can trust” in the Schutzstaffel—no matter what the job, however shady or distasteful,Schlachter can be relied upon to get it done, with aminimum of fuss and with total discretion.

Tasked with protecting and safeguarding Doctorvon Kammerstein’s work, Schlachter does his job

dispassionately and with great efficiency. He’s usually fas-tidious about leading the various “requisitioning sorties”to collect new test subjects from the local population.

In any attack on the castle, Schlachter and his 10-mandetachment will be found protecting von Kammerstein,wherever he is.

Appearance: Schlachter is almost the parody of an evilscheming SS officer. He is highly educated, yet with aterrible cruel streak: his flabby face is twisted in a sneer,and crossed by a long duelling scar. He is overweight,and limps heavily on his right leg; nevertheless someof his younger muscle is still there, and he can packa punch from his old boxing days. He knows enoughEnglish to gloat and sneer effectively.

THE GESTAPO INKARLSTEIN

The “Stapoleistelle Karlstein” is the local office of theGestapo, the secret police of the Third Reich. In sum-mer 1939 these are a plain-clothes outfit, typically fondof black leather trench coats and fedoras, and are rightlyfeared. Since the Occupation, they’ve taken over theformer local police station in Karlstein village, and arenow an ominous and oppressive force in the middle ofthe community.

Investigators who are captured by the Nazis in oraround Karlstein will likely end up at the hands of one ofthe Gestapo interrogators in the Karlstein bureau...

Gestapo Officer Inspektor Schleicher has two Gestapo officers workingfor him, both of whom enjoy their jobs... no matter whothey have to lean on or intimidate. They’re from theThird Reich, but enjoy pushing around the three localBohemian police officers who now have to work underthem.

vehicles. However, in A ch tun g ! C thu lhu it’s occasionally

possible that someone ma y lob a grenade at a half -track,

or leap inside a Sherman ta nk and f ire a bunch of shells at

a Tiger. Here’s a wa y to handle that without getting into

heav y tactical vehicle combat.

The weapons tables in the Ca ll of Cth ulh u 6th ed ition

rules (pages 6 4-5) provide damage details f or attacks on

individuals. In the case of grenades, explosives, and shells,

these can get p retty ast ronomical—easil y 10D6 or more.

However, vehicles aren’t people, and in general a jeep or ahalf-track can absorb a lot more punishment than a person

can. In su ch cases, you can s impl y use the number of dice

indicated f or the weapon d amage as th e to tal damage done

to a vehicle’s hit points. So, 10D6 would result in 10 points

of damage. As usual, vehicle armour will subtract from that

(most vehicles aren’t armoured).

These are different f rom the rules for att acking vehicles

above. Additionally, characters inside vehicles are con sid-

(note that this is usually different f rom the vehicle’s own

armour); Keepers may allow Spot Hidden rolls to ta rget oc-

cupants if there’s a chance of doing so. In some cases, this

may make a vehicle’s occupants virtually immune to small

weapons’ attacks—in which case it’s time to break open the

explosives!

Appearance: Schleicher’s face is pockmarked fromchildhood diseases, and his teeth are protruding, yel-low, and stink. He uses both these features to great ef-fect in his interrogations. He has a disconcerting habitof turning up silently and lurking in the shadows inhis trenchcoat, eavesdropping on conversations. Hedoesn’t miss a trick.

THE CZECH RESISTANCEAll types of people belong to the Czech resistance—some overtly, openly fighting against the Nazi occupa-tion, others covertly, going about their everyday livesbut doing what they can to fight against the occupiers.

The following are some of the more helpful resistancemembers the investigators may meet.

Typical Resistance Fighter These come from all walks of life. Those still alive aresuspicious to the point of paranoia, alert, stealthy, andruthless. They’re generally also cool-headed and brave,and able to bluff their way before their German occupi-ers—something the investigators may find difficult.

Vaclav Zajic, Head of the Local Resistance

Vaclav Zajic is a former schoolteacher in the Karlsteinarea and now on the run for his life. He is the only mem-ber of the local resistance who knows the heads of all thelocal resistance cells (groups of a handful of people), aswell as being one of the few who knows how to contactthe Three Kings. He makes a habit of using capturedGerman weapons he’s taken from soldiers he has killedas a matter of pride. He is supportive of Father Andrej’srescue attempts, but insists that both adults and chil-dren should be rescued; this has led to friction withinhis resistance group, and he and Father Andrej are cur-rently not on good terms. Secretly, Zajic doubts FatherAndrej’s sanity.

Helena Svobodova,the Spy in the Castle

Helena handles deliveries from the village to thecastle, and is generally trusted (and flirted with)by most of the soldiers—the Svobodovs are a localfamily of grocers. She works for the resistance secretly,and may be the first person to alert them of theinvestigators’ arrival.

Appearance: Helena is an attractive young woman whohas probably only escaped molestation at the hands ofthe occupying troops because of her constant flirtingwith Captain Kratz, the castle commandant. She’splaying a dangerous game with him, however, occa-sionally eavesdropping or obtaining information fromthe castle which would get her summarily executed iffound out. She goes up to the castle almost every day—usually with special deliveries for the captain.

THE THREE KINGSThe “Three Kings” ( Tri kralove) is probably the mostfamous Czech anti-Nazi resistance group currently ac-tive in the Protectorate, comprising Josef Masin, VaclavMoravek, and Josef Balaban. The group was establishedearlier this year (1939) when Nazi Germany annexedCzechoslovakia; since then, their most important taskhas been to maintain radio contact with FrantisekMoravec in Great Britain, with whom they can verifythe identity of the investigators. They also liaise with anextensive spy network within the Protectorate, includ-ing a rumoured Nazi agent codenamed “A-54” locatedin northern Prague, and organise sabotage operations.They’re national heroes, and of course at the very top ofthe Nazi occupiers’ wanted list.

Josef Masin, “the Father” Josef Masin (born August 26, 1896) is a formerCzechoslovak army officer. He fought in Russia (1916-1921), and later commanded an artillery regiment; sincethe occupation, he has been working in the resistancewith Josef Balaban and Vaclav Moravek, undertakingintelligence gathering and sabotage missions.

Josef Balaban Josef Balaban (born June 5, 1894) is a formerCzechoslovak staff officer and lieutenant colonel in theMinistry of Defence. He’s currently a leader of the resist-ance group Obrana Naroda (“Defence of the Nation”),established by former army officers, and has formed theThree Kings with Josef Masin and Vaclav Moravek.

Vaclav MoravekVaclav Moravek (born August 8, 1904) is a formerpistol-shooting champion and staff captain of theCzechoslovak Army—his motto is “I believe in God andmy pistols”! He has been working as a clerk in the labouroffice in the town of Kolin since being demobilised afterthe occupation.

Moravek is a founder of Obrana Naroda (see above),and a key member of the Three Kings. He’s known forhis incredible bravery and daring—sometimes border-ing on the foolhardy. Once, when smuggling explosivesto Prague by train from Yugoslavia, he was stopped andsearched by a German police officer at Prague railwaystation. When challenged, he calmly replied “what maylook like explosives to you, are in fact ordinary centrifugetransmitters”. Amazingly, he was allowed to pass!

Appendix Two: New Rules

There are various new rules distributed throughout thisscenario. For ease of reference, we’ve also collated themhere.

PARACHUTINGUnder normal circumstances parachuting requires aDEX x3% roll to land safely. On a failure, the investiga-tor must make a successful Jump roll or take 1D6 damage(2D6 damage if the Jump roll is fumbled). Investigatorstrying to land close to a populated area at night withoutalerting guards (within a mile or so) must also make aSneak roll to avoid being spotted on their descent; doingthe same by day means the investigator is automaticallyspotted.

GUARDS AND ALERTNESSCreeping up on guards and sneaking past patrols are keyelements of wartime adventures. Investigators who arecareful or stealthy enough may get within striking dis-tance of their targets without alerting the enemy to theirpresence, while those who take too many risks, or whotry to get too close to their target and are spotted, orwho open fire, may find an entire enemy force rising upagainst them.

In the latter case, all forces opposing the investigatorswill be on alert for the next 2D6 hours, during whichtime all patrols are at full complement, and all Sneak,Hide, or rolls to bluff or disguise made by the investiga-tors are Difficult (ie halved).

Fortunately for investigators, the enemy cannot be onalert forever; after the period is over, enemy forces returnto their normal state of alertness—until the investigatorsagain take an action to cause another alert.

VEHICLESThe Call of Cthulhu rules don’t deal with combat be-tween vehicles. However, in Achtung! Cthulhu it’s oc-casionally possible that someone may lob a grenade ata half-track, or leap inside a Sherman tank and fire abunch of shells at a Tiger. Here’s a way to handle thatwithout getting into heavy tactical vehicle combat.

or more. However, vehicles aren’t people, and in gen-eral a jeep or a half-track can absorb a lot more punish-ment than a person can. In such cases, you can simplyuse the number of dice indicated for the weapon damageas the total damage done to a vehicle’s hit points. So,10D6 would result in 10 points of damage. As usual, ve-hicle armour will subtract from that (most vehicles aren’tarmoured).

Attacking People in VehiclesThe Call of Cthulhu rules provide guidelines for attack-ing people inside vehicles (see Call of Cthulhu page284-5). These are different from the rules for attackingvehicles above. Additionally, characters inside vehiclesare considered to be protected by that vehicle’s person-nel armour (note that this is usually different from thevehicle’s own armour); Keepers may allow Spot Hiddenrolls to target occupants if there’s a chance of doing so.In some cases, this may make a vehicle’s occupants vir-tually immune to small weapons’ attacks—in which caseit’s time to break open the explosives!

Half-TracksThere is a vast array of vehicles in use immediately be-fore and during World War Two. Three Kings introducesjust one: the German Sd.Kfz.7 Half-track, one of the ar-chetypal vehicles of the war. In 1939 it’s still quite new,and is particularly useful in off-road patrols; the half-tracks in use around Castle Karlstein are all open-topmodels, and can carry up to 12 troopers. It has a topspeed of around 30 mph, and 5/16” (8mm) armour. ItsCall of Cthulhu vehicle statistics are as follows:

both use military specialists from the armed services aswell as qualified civilians for their work. In Achtung!Cthulhu we’ve defined two intelligence service occu-pations: one for research-oriented agents, usually based“back at headquarters” and rarely seeing action; and an-other for field agents, used to operating in highly dan-gerous conditions behind enemy lines. Their occupationskills are as follows:

INTELLIGENCE OFFICER (RESEARCH)—Anthropology, Cryptography, History, Library Use,Psychology, Spot Hidden, plus one personal specialisa-tion such as Art, Archaeology, Law, Occult, Photography,Psychoanalysis, etc.

INTELLIGENCE OFFICER (FIELD AGENT)—Cryptography, Fast Talk, Listen, Locksmith, Navigate,Persuade, Spot Hidden, plus one personal specialisationsuch as Conceal, Disguise, Hide, Library Use, MartialArts, Photography, Sneak, Track

NEW SKILLSThree Kings introduces three new skills which are veryuseful during wartime.

Cryptography (01%): This skill deals with the cre-ating, deciphering, and cracking of codes. A successfulroll allows the user to encode or decode a message whosecipher is already known. It doesn’t allow you to crack mili-tary codes—efforts of that magnitude require teams ofspecialists working hundreds and thousands of hours—but the Keeper may allow you to get some idea of thecontent of poor quality codes or simple ciphers. A failedroll results in an unintelligible result; a fumble results ina misleading and possibly dangerously garbled messagebeing created.

Jury Rig (25%): Things break down during war, andyou can never find the piece of gear you want. The abil-ity to cobble something together to do the job out of bitsand pieces you do have is therefore priceless. A successful

Jury Rig roll allows you to create a relatively uncompli-cated item out of available materials, or use such materi-

als to repair another item: this could be a rickety bridge, arudimentary fortification, or even a booby-trap or decoy.Together with Electrical Repair and Mechanical Repair,and the presence of appropriate components, tools, andmaybe a workshop, sometimes quite sophisticated itemsof equipment can be jury-rigged. Want to retrofit thatcaptured Volkswagen with armour plates and a machinegun? This is how!

Scrounge (10%): This is a survival skill particularlyuseful in inhabited areas—a successful roll allows the user

to “rustle up” food, perhaps some fuel, maybe even someuseful tools, by stealing, bartering, or otherwise “appro-priating” items found in the vicinity. This isn’t a skill for“living off the land” in the great outdoors—it relies onhaving at least some degree of civilisation to scroungeoff. Only items which might conceivably be available inthe immediate area can be scrounged. You’re just not go-ing to find a wedding dress on the Normandy beaches,no matter how much you need it (but Stalingrad – nowthere’s a possibility!).

TORTURE ANDINTERROGATION

Section D and other agents behind enemy lines areroutinely provided with “L-pill” cyanide capsules, to betaken in case of capture. This isn’t a melodramatic flour-ish—captured spies and resistance members are interro-gated and tortured horribly, particularly by the Gestapoin Germany and German-occupied territories, beforebeing executed.

Be aware that embarking on this kind of narrative candoom your Achtung! Cthulhu game to morbidity—it’s agrim theme that may not be appropriate for your game,and Keepers should only do so if it makes dramatic senseto the game. There’s little excitement to be gained fromtrying to roleplay desperate suffering and torture. Havingsaid that, avoiding capture and interrogation can be mo-ments of high heroism for Achtung! Cthulhu characters;and so, with that in mind, here’s how to handle it.

A captured investigator has two options: take theL-pill, or try and hold out until he’s rescued. Enemy sol-diers are under instructions to capture spies and resist-ance members alive if possible; they’re aware of suicidepills, and will try to stop opponents from taking them.

To take an L-pill under such conditions requires anaction. It doesn’t require a roll unless someone is tryingto stop you, in which case it requires a Grapple roll ifsomeone is trying to grapple you, or a simple DEX x3roll if someone is preventing you in some other manner.Success means you’ve taken the L-pill, and have heroi-cally given your life to safeguard the resistance; failuremeans you’ve been prevented from taking the L-pill, andtaken prisoner for interrogation.

former Czechoslovak president, as president of the new protectorate, but itis clear that it is being administered by Nazi party officials under the new

“Reichsprotektor” Konstantin VON NEURATH. The same proclamation banned allpolitical parties and removed legal status from the Jewish population.

The population of the Protectorate is being mobilised to work for theeconomy of the Third Reich, and many workers have been transported intothe territory of Germany. Rationing has been introduced, and shortages arewidespread.

The German occupation does not appear unduly harsh. Major industrial plantssuch as SKODA, which manufactures products such as tanks and artillery, arestill operational. There is talk of switching plants over to manufacturing

goods according to German designs.

The Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia comprises two regions (or “Länder”,in German): Bohemia (“Böhmen”) and Moravia (“Mähren”). Each region is dividedinto districts (“Oberlandratsbezirke”) and sub-districts (“Bezirke”).

The capital of the Protectorate is Prague (“Prag” in German, “Praha” inCzech), the cultural and political heart of the Czech people. It is popularlycalled the “City of a Hundred Spires”. It lies on the Vltava river in centralBohemia. With a population of 800,000, it possessed a large German-speakingminority even before the Occupation, and a significant Jewish population.

Whilst considered part of Greater Germany, since the occupation theProtectorate has been assigned its own money (Crowns, or “Koruna”) and stamps.

Section VIII Report:

Not everyone has accepted the Nazi occupation. At the time of the Germanannexation of the Sudetenland from Czechoslovakia in October 1938 (see briefing1938/CZE45.D “The Munich Agreement”), the former Czechoslovak Republicpresident Mr Edvard BENES resigned, and has since been in exile in London. MrBENES has been working to establish a Czechoslovak “government-in-exile”, andis negotiating for international recognition.

Mr BENES has been working with Mr Frantisek MORAVEC, head of Czechoslovakmilitary intelligence, to organise a resistance network in the formerCzechoslovak Republic, comprising elements of the former army command,political activists, social democrats, and leftist intellectuals, includingeducators and trades unionists.
