TESTING TIPS AND STRATEGIES

Read ALL directions BEFORE you answer any questions.

Underline key words and phrases in the question.

Ask yourself “Will I find this answer directly stated in the passage or will I have to think about it and draw a conclusion on my own?”

Preview the reading selection. How is the passage organized? Read the title. Read the first paragraph. Read the last paragraph. Skim over the entire passage.

NOW -Read the passage!

Read the entire question again and ALL answer choices before marking an answer choice.

Eliminate the obviously wrong answers!

Watch for words such as: NOT ALL ALWAYS NEVER MOST ONLY

Strategies for solving math problems:• Read the problem• Identify key information • Determine what you need to do to solve• Use your scrap paper!!!• Evaluate your answer – Is it reasonable? Does is make sense? Check your calculations!!
