WHAT IS THE PROBLEM YOU ARE RESPONDINGTO and HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT IDENTIFYING
IT?
I took time to go through the strategic plansand situational analysis for all the sevencouncils in my area of operation(Western
Province), the problems that came outclearly from all the documents I read wereindicating gender based violence andviolence against children.
That is how my office took up the challenge totuckle the vice.

WHY IS THIS ISSUE IMPORTANT?
Gender Based violence is a very badpractice and is detrimental to developmentof the Nation because it limits the minoritygender sex from performing to
expectations and also to contribute to bothrural, provincial and national developmenthence the need to fight and reduce ortotally eradicate the vice.
Productive man hours are lost in illnessdue to gender perpetuated violence.

HOW ARE YOU GOING ABOUT ADDRESSINGTHIS PROBLEM?
A provincial action plan has beendeveloped for conducting Gender basedviolence review meetings and alsoreviewing of action taken on the genderbased violence review cases.
A strategy has been developed ofconstructing more police posts in ruralareas and in areas where police facilitiesare not found.

RESOURCEFULNESS: WHAT FINANCIAL, HUMANAND OTHER RESOURCES WERE MOBILISED? HOW
ARE THEY BEING USED?
My office provides fuel and other resourcesincluding meeting venues for reviewmeetings.
Sources of funding for provision of policeposts in rural areas are being supportedunder the Constituency Development fund.
There is also prudent use of mobilised
resources because the same are subjectedto audits.

actions.

WHAT LESSONS HAVE BEEN LEARNED?
Local communities are eager todisseminate the information on GenderBased violence, Gender mainstreamingand Gender Balancing in their ruralcommunities but they lack synergies and
adequate platforms to use for theirinterventions.
Using local government structures canalso be an effective channel to control
the vice of GBV.
