Volunteer Hours Take a look at your calendars and add up your volunteer hours. Come to our next meeting prepared to give your monthly totals to Virginia so that she can put them in her book. We need to turn in our totals to San Gabriel Valley District in January.

Blankets of Love Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Blankets of Love Project! $220.00 was donated by members at our September meeting, which means we get to make 22 blankets instead of the 20 we were aiming for! Your generosity is appreciated! I am delighted to report that we were the first team to turn in our funds for this project. In September, we sent around a sign up sheet for the following: *donations *volunteers to help with the prep work which involves cutting and bending and generally workig on the floor, *tying the blankets, which is actually just pulling fringe through a pre-cut slit. We will have a "blanket tying" party in E3 in late January or early February *washing and drying the blankets Thank you to everyone who signed up. If you wish to add your name to help with any of the cutting, tying or washing or drying, let me know. Mrs. Gallegos (the founder of the Blankets of Love project) will pick up the fleece material the week of January 7-11th and one of those days will be a "Blanket Cutting Day" in Cedargrove's cafeteria. Volunteers will cut miles of fleece into 2 yard pieces. Anyone who wants to help is welcome. She will then be teaching blanket preparation/cutting classes during the week of January 17-20th, 2013 at Cedargrove Elementary. I can teach a separate class just for COWC if those dates do not work for everyone who is helping with the blanket prep. We should aim to finish all of our blankets and have them ready to turn in by February 14th. If anyone has any questions or wants to sign up to help, just talk to me at a meeting, email me at [email protected] or call/text me at (626) 390-4695. Warmly, Margie Dowens

Women’s Health contributed by Maryanne Chartrand HAVE YOU HAD YOUR FLU SHOT?????? RISKS OF DIAGNOSTING YOURSELF In a study in the Journal of Consumer Research, young adults were more likely to diagnose themselves with a less common but more serious illness-H1N1 (swine flu)—than with regular, less-severe flu when given a set of hypothetical symptoms. But, when diagnosing others with the same symptoms, they were more likely to pick regular flu. The authors concluded that people might over-estimate the likelihood of serious illness when self-diagnosing, in part because they focus more on matching symptoms than on the actual prevalence of each prospective condition.

If you were not at the October meeting and will be attending the November meeting you will need to call Arlene @ 909-593-7493 or Wendy @ 626-963-4671, before Noon on Monday, October 29, 2012 so the correct count can be called in to the Continental Restaurant.

Lunch is $15.00. Please have exact change or a check made out to COWC to make it easier for Wendy and Arlene.

Don’t forget our meeting time is 10:30am.

No Bake, Bake Sale Last November we tried something

new. Instead of baking items and

bringing them to the meeting for a

Bake Sale, we had a No Bake, Bake

Sale where we donated the money

we would have spent on the baking

supplies. So we are going to try it

again..instead of baking just donate

at our next meeting.

A financial genius is someone who can earn money faster than his or her family can spend it.

We established two committees at our Board Meeting on October 18th. One for our new scholarships with Loretta and Annette heading this one up. One for our Charter Oak School District donations with Fran and Gloria heading this one up. If you would like to be on either of these committees please talk to Loretta or Fran at our November 1st meeting

HOT CLAM DIP submitted by Maryanne Chartrand

1 Large Shepherd Bread 1-3/4 Tsp. Beau Monde spice (Round or square) unsliced 1-1/2 Tsp. garlic salt or powder 2 – 8 oz. pkg. cream cheese 10 drops Tabasco Sauce (softened) 1/4 cup clam juice 2 – 6 oz. cans minced clams (save clam juice) Blend cream cheese & spices—add clams and chill overnight. The next day, cut top off bread (use as a lid); hollow out bread and cut inside into cubes. Put cheese mixture into hollowed-out bread and place “lid” on top. Wrap in medium to heavy foil and bake at 300° for two hours. Serve piping hot with bread cubes, chips, Wheat thins, crackers, or whatever desired. You’ll need at least one other item as the bread cubes usually aren’t enough for the entire dip. (One of my favorite recipes for Christmas or New Year’s Eve.)

need to publish, we will be on the

Shepherd’s Pantry At our November 1st Meeting we will have our first opportunity to bring items to donate to the Shepherd’s Pantry. We gave out shopping bags and lists at our October meeting in hopes of helping us remember to bring our grocery bags full of donations to our November Meeting. If you did not receive a grocery bag don’t let that slow you down. You can go shopping or check your pantry. Here is the list below in case you didn’t get one.

Unexpected Natural Cleaners: Rice: Use it to: Clean the inside of a vase or thin-necked bottle. Fill three quarters of the vessel with warm water and add a tablespoon of uncooked rice. Cup your hand over the opening, shake vigorously, and rinse. Cornstarch: Use it to: Clean grease spills on carpets. Pour cornstarch onto spots and let it sit for 15 to 30 minutes before vacuuming.

Holiday Food Bank Donation Every Holiday Season we donate $100.00 to a Glendora Food Bank and $100.00 to a Covina Food Bank. Since Nellie found out that the Shepherd’s Pantry only serves Glendora residents, and we already donated $100.00 to the Glendora Holiday Basket Program, we decided at our October Board Meeting to donate our other $100.00 to the Covina Presbyterian Church Food Bank for this year. We can look for other Food Banks in the Covina area next year and see if we want to rotate our Covina donation.

Autumn Gold Pot Roast ¼ cup all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons salt ½ teaspoon pepper 3 to 4 pounds beef chuck or 7-bone roast 2 tablespoons vegetable oil ½ teaspoon dried oregano ¼ teaspoon celery seed 1 bay leaf 1 garlic clove, mashed ½ cup orange juice concentrate 6 carrots, scraped and cut in chunks 12 boiling onions 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar 2 tablespoons cornstarch Combine the flour, salt and pepper. Add 1 ½ cups water, the oregano, celery seed, bay leaf and garlic; bring to a boil. Cover tightly, lower heat to simmer and cook 2 hours, adding additional water if necessary to keep roast submerged. Combine the orange juice concentrate with 1¼ cups water (or simply use fresh juice) and add all but ¼ cup to the pot. Add carrots and onions; cover tightly and simmer an additional hour. Remove roast from pot; remove any bones or fat. Slice or shred meat, as desired, and keep warm. Stir brown sugar and cornstarch into reserved orange juice until dissolved. Stir into pot liquid, increase heat to high, and cook, stirring, until thick. Return meat to pot and serve. Makes 8 servings Contributed by Jennifer New

THE ACORN NOVEMBER 2012

Early California Thanksgiving

Part I: Please Pass The Jackrabbit

The first citizens of the newly created state of California were probably too busy to celebrate holidays, particularly those working hard in the mining camps hoping to become wealthy. Governor Peter Burnett didn't let that stop him from declaring one, however. Amongst his many great duties, he set aside November 30 of 1850 as the legal holiday for Thanksgiving. All official business was stopped, and at least those from New England, who had memories of their loved ones and days of thanks in the past, felt obliged to observe, if the news got around to them in time for them to do so.

Puritanical and didn't cotton much to the idea. In their minds the whole thing was ridiculous and many considered it hypocrisy. Still, the New Englanders showed determination to follow Governor Burnett's proclamation Immigrants from the southern and middle United States, and from Europe thought the holiday purely and many others decided to join in when they realized the holiday mainly meant eating and drinking all they wanted to.

"Yankee" Traditions

Reportedly, there were about 50 Thanksgiving celebrations that first year. The old-timers talked of "Yankees" throwing down their picks and shovels and having a good old time. The traditional turkey was rather scarce, unless someone lived where they could find and kill a wild bird. For the most part even a little fresh beef was satisfactory for a day of thanks. If one was lucky enough to kill a deer and serve it, that was considered a fine luxury. In most miner's cabins, however, jackrabbit took the place of honor as the main entrée. Some, like Alfred T. Jackson of Litchfield County, Connecticut, enjoyed quail stew and dried apple pie. Although Alfred, apparently missed Governor Burnett's official holiday date announcement, and celebrated his holiday December 1st.

The Governor's Feast

Of all the celebrations that first year, Sacramento probably had the grandest. As soon as they heard Governor Burnet's announcement, the town population of men from New England banded together to form The Sons of New England. They put together plans for a banquet to be held in the dining room of the Columbia Hotel. The walls were adorned with bunting. Flags and shields containing the names of each of the states formed a frieze. Everyone was invited to the feast, even if they weren't New Englanders. Governor Burnett, himself, even showed up, just in from a funeral from Monterey. Mr. K. M. Berry was presided over the event, Rev. Benton blessed the food, and Mr. W. Cartwright made the toast. Forty different dishes, including the traditional turkey and pumpkin pie, and eight different wines, were served. Many dishes were as elegant as any served in the best restaurants around the world. The feast and festivities went on until midnight.

Throughout California, in the large cities like San Francisco, San Jose and Monterey, at least the fortunate who had families with them, celebrated California's first Thanksgiving. Where they could obtain it and afford the high price, they had turkey, of course. The businesses in these cities really didn't close for the most part, but no one showed a lot of interest in shopping that day. Some churches even held small Thanksgiving services.

Although the California Thanksgiving celebrations were few and far between in 1850, as more women and children joined the population of mainly men, the holiday became a tradition that is widely enjoyed by most everyone today. While the New Englanders in the Eastern parts of the United States may have always mimicked their Pilgrim forefathers, the holiday was not official in the United States as a whole until President Abraham Lincoln declared it as a national holiday in 1863

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving

Born Too Soon When I was a student I was quite, I didn’t protest, I didn’t riot, I wasn’t unwashed and I wasn’t obscene, I made no demands of Presy or Dean. I sat in no sit-ins, I heckled no speaker, I broke not a window, few students were meeker. I am forced to admit, with some hesitation, all I got out of school was an education. By Richard Armour
