The Air Force Audit Agency’s operating locationat Robins serves as an independent audit function ofthe Air Force.

The staff is included among a network of profes-sionals from more than 50 installations worldwide;28 of those in the U.S. There’s a staff of 26 peoplehere, who are responsible for not only contributing toAir Force-wide and local audit assessments, but alsoaudits for all Air Force Reserve Command and Na-tional Guard units at bases across Georgia.

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achieve-ments by African Americans and the central role they haveplayed in U.S. history.

One of the countless contributions happened in 1999when Lt. Col. Shawna Rochelle Kimbrell, became the firstfemale African American fighter pilot in the Air Force.

Another happened in the ’50s, when Ralph JohnsonBunche, a political scientist, academic and diplomat be-came the first African American to receive the NobelPeace Prize.

This week Air Force officials released details onthe fiscal 2016 selective reenlistment bonus program.

This year’s program, consisting of 117 Air Forcespecialties eligible to receive bonuses, is a substantialincrease from the previous year’s program where 40AFSCs were eligible.

At Robins Air Force Base, a total of 587 airmenhave been identified as eligible for the SRB programbut must still meet all reenlistment eligibility.

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE,Ohio – In June, about 13,000 Air Force MaterielCommand employees will transition to theDepartment of Defense Civilian AcquisitionWorkforce Demonstration Project pay system.Employees whose positions have been identified

for conversion are being notified through their respec-tive Centers. AcqDemo will cover mainly non-bar-gaining, supervisory and professional series employ-ees.exceptions to conversion include the following:

�Personnel in ranks above GS-15, such as SES;�Non-General Schedule employees; for example,

Federal Wage System employees, leaders and supervi-sors;

�Employees in organizations already participatingin another personnel system, including their respec-tive GS employees. Examples are the Air ForceResearch Laboratory’s Air Force LaboratoryPersonnel Demonstration Project and intelligence per-sonnel participating in the Defense CivilianIntelligence Personnel System; and

�Employees covered by a collective bargainingagreement.Employees who move into AcqDemo will have no

loss of pay. GS employees who have accrued timetoward their next Within Grade Increase or StepIncrease will receive a one-time WGI buy-in payadjustment to compensate them for their time servedunder the GS pay system.The buy-in is calculated based on the number of

calendar weeks between the effective date of theemployee’s last equivalent increase, such as a withingrade increase or promotion, and the date of theirconversion.

Employees with performance ratings of“acceptable” are generally eligible for a WGI buy-in. Exceptions to WGI eligibility are under the fol-lowing situations:

�Employees who are at the 10th step of theirgrade;

�Employees on retained pay; and�Employees on retained grade who would not

have received a WGI prior to expiration of theirretained grade.The General Schedule to AcqDemo conversion

Around the Air ForceHigh year of tenure extension for 122 specialties

Eligible senior airmen, staff sergeants, technicalsergeants, and master sergeants in 122 Air Forcespecialties can apply for a high year of tenure exten-sion and, if approved, will be able to extendbetween 12 and 24 months past their current HYT.Eligible Airmen who apply for an extension

should be approved by their unit commander orcivilian leader, and should meet regular re-enlist-ment criteria as well. Airmen with a re-enlistmentrestriction are not eligible to apply for an HYTextension.The HYT extension application window will be

open Feb. 1, 2016, through May 31, 2017.Eligible Airmen with a current HYT in February

2016 should apply as soon as possible to obtainapproval prior to their current HYT. Eligible Airmen

with a current HYT March 1-May 31, 2016, shouldapply at least 30 days prior to their current HYT. Allother eligible Airmen should submit their requestsfor extension at least 120 days prior to their currentHYT.Eligibility is limited to specific control Air Force

AL UDEID AIR BASE, Qatar – “We have anissue. I’ll call him in and figure out why he failed to … ”said the supervisor who walked into my office thatsunny day.“Stop,” I said, “find out the facts, let me see the out-

come of the mistake, and let me see if I own it beforeyou say he failed.” The supervisor looked puzzled. The details of the

individual and the failure are inconsequential. Tying fail-ure to an individual seemed too easy to me. What mat-tered was the process of analyzing failure in hopes ofunit success. After all, in the military we’re surrounded by amazing

patriots who strive daily to make a positive difference.A rush to judge the person who experienced failure

before rationally evaluating all the details is detrimentalto building a team that’s eager to serve, learn, fix andbetter execute our diverse missions. In more than 22 years of service, I’ve come to firmly

believe most events we see as failures are attributed toone of three reasons, and supervisors and leaders ownthem. Let’s evaluate:

First, did you properly set out expectationsand provide appropriate and robust feedback?

It’s the foundation for everything. Where your teamfinishes is rooted in where you ask them to start. If you haven’t set out clear priorities, expectations and

goals, take caution criticizing the paths they take. Coursecorrections ingrained with open and consistent communica-tion are key to setting up people and their teams for success. If you’re in charge, listen intently, ponder more and

talk less. Seek feedback, provide it and make yourexpectations concise.

Second, did you properly train; but moreimportantly, educate the professionals withwhom you serve? The demands of training for the multitude of mis-

sions Airmen are asked to accomplish often drive us toone-on-one computer-based training modules and shortslideshows. That’s training, but it’s not education. Only through consistent supervisor follow up, experi-

ence-driven opportunities, team discussions, leadershipengagement, and an open and collaborative review offailures are professionals truly educated. Education ismultifaceted. If you’re provided with only a CBT, thensupervisors and leaders own any failures as a result.

Third, did you take time to see if the proce-dures by which your teams operate are broken,inefficient or ineffective? Did the process fail the professional? Challenge what

you see and how you operate if it is not working. When

we apply an organized, train-and-equip mentality, we runthe risk of negative consequences. We risk failing. Processes must be challenged and fixed. Ensuring

your team adheres to disciplined execution of their tasksstarts with a sound process supervisors and leaders own. Repeat failures usually mean the process is broken,

and people are being set up to fail. Unless a process isbounded by the laws of physics or chemistry, fix it if it’sleading to repeated failure.Before rushing to judgement – as a supervisor and a

leader – apply some critical thinking and ask yourselfthose three basic questions when analyzing failure.If you don’t encourage a systemic look at failure

when it occurs, you run the risk of destroying effectivechain of command communication, team cohesion, hon-est feedback and also the prospect of the building ofeffective learning organizations. Honest mistakes are part of everyone’s learning

process. High-performing teams aren’t driven by fear ofthe consequences, but rather by the belief they’re accom-plishing something of importance with the support oftheir leadership.Standards must be set and followed. Analyze failure,

then watch your team succeed If you start there, youmay find the team will bring forward more issues tosolve and ideas for success than you can handle.

And that is a risk worth taking.

same aircraft maintained by the 561stAircraft Maintenance Squadron at theWarner Robins Air Logistics Complex.That’s right, right here in Middle

Georgia. At some point in an F-15’sservice life, it will have been touchedby someone from Robins Air ForceBase. The aircraft’s worldwide reach ispossible due to the contributions fromhundreds of people at Robins.There are folks in the Fabric

Survival Equipment Shop who inspectand pack parachutes. If you’re comingout of an airplane at 20,000 feet, it’scritical those chutes open in time. Eachparachute has a service life of 13 years.Then there are those in the 572nd

Commodities Maintenance Squadronwho work on the aircraft’s wings.Workers de-panel the wings, tear itdown, remove plumbing and foam,then hydroblast sealant and debris. It’sinspected and repairs are made asneeded before build-up.Mechanics here also work on the

aircraft’s protective canopies that coverits cockpit and enclose the aircrew.High-quality visibility is paramount

in an F-15, especially when flying inair-to-air combat environments. Whenan F-15 leaves Robins, it does so witha brand new piece of protective glass.There are the program managers in

the System Program Office who planthe work performed on the F-15 fleet;and foreign military sales professionalswho engage with international partnerswho purchase these high-value assets.The Rewire Flight maintainers

remove and replace every single pieceof wire inside the fighter aircraft’s Cand D models. That workload will soonend when the final aircraft is scheduledto leave the complex later this month.The hundreds of engineers, sched-

ulers, planners, sheet metal and aircraftmechanics who come to work daily toperform programmed depot mainte-

nance have also contributed to fiscal2015 numbers that exist due to contin-uous process improvements in the561st AMXS.That resulted in the delivery of 73

Eagles back to the warfighter in thelast fiscal year.So you see it takes a true team effort

to keep these aircraft flying, not onlyoverseas engaging with enemy forces,but also here in the homeland protect-ing tens of thousands of citizens whowant to enjoy a football game.Now back to that big game.The training F-15 pilots conducted

with the Civil Air Patrol is interesting.The California wing and two Cessna

182 aircraft from CAP flew at leasttwice this past week to ensure the safe-ty of the airspace around Sunday’sevent. Cessna’s acted as aircraft to beintercepted by the F-15s, providingtraining for what would happen whenapproaching another aircraft intrudingrestricted airspace.This is the 15th year CAP has par-

ticipated in the North AmericanAerospace Defense Command’s air-defense exercises, specifically designedto protect the airspace above the SuperBowl. The non-profit organization is anauxiliary of the Air Force, with primarymissions in aerospace education, cadetprograms and emergency services.According to the Federal Aviation

Administration, there will be tempo-rary flight restrictions prohibiting cer-tain aircraft operations within a 32-mile radius of the stadium on gameday.Things won’t just be crazy on the

ground, with metal detectors and bagchecks, long lines, congestion in thestreets, armed security guards and lawenforcement personnel throughout thestadium and city, but the sky, too, willbe off-limits.So what happens if you’re a pilot

and you decide to take a quick, casualdetour to peek at game-day activitiesbelow? Or, maybe you’re just out for anice flight, get lost for a few minutes,and are unaware of your surroundings?Either way, probably within a matter

of seconds, expect you’ll be intercepted

“It’s a broad spectrum of thetypes of reviews we perform,”she said. “We are looking froman internal control standpointwith any program or process. Not

that you’ve done somethingwrong, but we look at criteriaregarding how a program is sup-posed to work, and evaluate pro-gram processes against the spe-cific criteria, and best businesspractices within the governing

criteria for that program or func-tion.”

The benefit to Robins andother bases the agency servesthroughout Georgia is facilitatingstrategic decisions for the AirForce, and providing command-ers operational savings of morethan $300 million during the lastyear alone.

“We want to protect our AirForce and airmen with accounta-bility, and the way to do that is tomake sure Air Force operationsare working as intended based onthe criteria we have,” saidHerndon. “We can help give anindependent snapshot of howwell a particular function is oper-ating.”

officer’s role is to assist attorneys.The paralegal apprentice/journey-man/craftsman supports virtuallyall areas of the legal office, includ-ing: military justice; claims; civillaw; legal assistance; contracts andenvironmental law. Within those divisions, parale-

gals conduct research, interviewvictims and witnesses, and draftopinions and documents. They also support investigations

of serious incidents such as aircraft,missile or rocket accidents.Senior paralegals – superintend-

ntramural sports are alive and well at Robins. Onaverage, 120 to150 people participate in each of thesports that are offered.

Those offerings include basketball, soccer, flag football,golf, softball, indoor volleyball, racquetball and bowling. Avarsity men’s and women’s basketball league competesagainst other bases.

Each unit has a contact for a sport representative. Teamsare usually made from those units, but occasionally a person willwant to participate and the unit doesn’t have enough interest.Those free agents can be picked up by another team.

Practices are held twice a week, and games are scheduled onfour nights a week.

Sports are a way for people to not only build relationships withteam members but to have a creative outlet for physical training.

“It gives them an opportunity to cooperate with their fellowteam members to have fun. It gets their competitive juices flow-ing,” said Kenneth Porter, sports director at Robins FitnessCenter.

Retirees are also welcome to play on intramural teams. Someof those basketball teams have been quite competitive, Portersaid.

Racquetball is quite popular. Most of the courts will be full inthe afternoon hours, said John Enterman, fitness and sports man-ager at the Robins Fitness Center.

The racquetball season begins this month. Usually there arehalf a dozen teams which compete against each other in singlesand doubles.

There are no costs involved except for bowling for lane rentaland golf, for the greens fees.

Last year, there were 10 golf teams.Because military members have unique circumstances with

deployments and TDYs, seasons and game schedules are flexible.“They play until they can’t,” Enterman said.New sports are being added as interest grows. A disc golf tour-

nament will be held this spring and there will be a street hockeydemonstration held in March. Although geared toward the mil-itary, all intramural sports are open to any base ID card holder.

HHaving a family history of heart disease placesa person at higher risk, but it doesn’t mean allhope for a healthy heart is lost.

Heart disease has traditionally been associated withmen, but the disease kills more women than all formsof cancer combined.

People can cut their heart disease risk by makingsome lifestyle changes.

Stuart Bapties, Health andWellness Center Flightchief, said quitting smoking reduces heart disease risk.

“Smoking is the most preventable cause of prema-ture death and it increases your risk for heart disease,”he said. “In addition, when you stop smoking, you helplower your blood pressure and lower your low-densitylipoprotein, or bad, cholesterol. So, if you want to livelonger, stop smoking.”

The HAWC offers free tobacco cessation optionsthat include counseling and discussion, along withnicotine replacement therapy to help people kick thetobacco habit.

Secondhand smoke also raises people’s heart dis-ease risk.

“We now know for a certainty that even beingaround smoke increases the risk for heart disease anddeath, even in those who have never smoked.Avoidsecondhand smoke whenever possible.” Bapties said.

People need to know their numbers.“You owe it to yourself to take an active role in

your own health,” he said. “Find out your blood pres-sure, cholesterol and weight and discuss those numberswith your doctor. With your doctor’s help, you canmonitor any changes and make informed decisions.”

Civilians can contact the Civilian Health PromotionService office at 478-327-8030 to schedule screeningsin their work center or create an account on theAirForce Materiel CommandWellness site atwww.afmcwellness.com. TRICARE community mem-bers can make an appointment to discuss having thesetests done with their primary care manager.

Making changes that impact blood pressure, choles-terol and weight can also reduce heart disease risk, saidBapties.

“Switch out one processed food a month for some-thing you make yourself,” he said. “It can be as simpleas a soup. By switching from processed foods, whichare usually high in sodium, you can make a differencein your blood pressure and overall health.”

Making other small steps can make a big differencealso, he said.

“Try parking further away from the office, choosingthe stairs, or taking a walk after lunch,” he said. “Standup every hour at your desk to stretch. If you have apedometer, aim for at least 10,000 steps a day.”

RobinsAir Force Base workers can get a freepedometer and participate in the Robins Million StepsChallenge for wellness prizes throughout the year bycalling the HAWC or CHPS.

Making lifestyle changes to reduce heart diseaserisk can often inspire others.

“Whether we’re taking care of our parents, our chil-dren, our partners or looking out for friends, we have aunique ability to influence changes in diet and exer-cise,” said Bapties. “You can impact a lot of peoplethrough your own choices.”

The Civilian Health Promotion Service will beavailable at locations basewide throughout February toanswer questions about heart disease and other well-ness concerns.

Robins Air Force Base ID cardholders don’thave to join a local gym to get heart healthy.

The Fitness Center, located in Bldg. 826, and theFitness Annex, located inBldg. 301 East Wing, BayH, offer workout equipment,classes and programs toboost one’s cardio fitnesswithout the gym member-ship hassle.

John Enterman, Fitnessand Sports manager in the78th Force SupportSquadron, said doing someexercise is better than noneat all.

“If you can’t get in anhour or 30 minutes, evenseven minutes with properintensity can make a differ-ence,” he said. “Exercise istoo important to not make itpart of your daily routine.”

Treadmills, upright andrecumbent bikes, and othercardio gear give peopleoptions for cardio workouts,no matter the duration.

TheAmerican College ofSports Medicine recommends 20 to 60 minutes ofcontinuous aerobic activity, three to five times aweek at 60 to 90 percent of maximum heart rate.

Robins offers indoor tracks in both of its fitnesscenters, a 400-meter rubberized track, a 5K running

trail, six tennis courts, inline hockey rink, four rac-quetball courts, an indoor cycling studio, group exer-cise studios, three indoor basketball courts, a footballfield, a soccer field and a three-lane 25-yard pool togive people options for workouts.

Additionally, Robins’ fitness centers offer 41 freegroup exercise classes per week.

“The key is to get into a routine and make exer-cise a habit,” Enterman said.

Dating violence is more com-mon than people might think.

According to the loveisre-spect.org website, one in threeadolescents in America is a victimof physical, sexual, emotional orverbal abuse from a dating partner– a figure that far exceeds rates ofother types of youth violence.

To prevent the continuation ofsuch violence, Robins Air ForceBase, along with local helpingagencies, will host online andface-to-face events to educateteens, parents and others aboutrelationship violence.

Maj. Michelle Gramling,Family Advocacy officer in the78th Medical OperationsSquadron’s Family AdvocacyProgram here, said her organiza-tion’s goal is to maintain healthyfamilies and relationships.

“In February, we stress theimportance of promoting safe andhealthy relationships with ourteens,” she said. “Unhealthy rela-tionships can have negativeimpact on an individual’s emo-tional and physical well-being.Starting early can help lay thefoundation for maintaininghealthy relationships.”

Family Advocacy will host“Teen Talk: Love is SettingBoundaries” for youth, ages 13through 18, at the Robins YouthCenter Feb. 20, from 11 a.m. tonoon, and “Teen Talk: How not todate a Jerk or Jerkette” for teensat the Robins ProfessionalDevelopment Center Feb. 24,from 6 to 8 p.m., as well as othersthroughout February.

Tandra Hunter, Robins’ FamilyAdvocacy Outreach Programmanager, said teen dating violenceprevention should be everyone’sconcern.

“We’re encouraging everyonein our community to talk to theirteen about dating and healthy rela-tionships,” she said.

Hunter said she encouragesparents to talk to their teens andask questions to find out if theirteen is dating and if their teenknows the signs of an unhealthyrelationship.

Parents should also teach theirteen how to differentiate betweenlove and unhealthy relationshipbehavior, Hunter said.

Additionally, Hunter said par-ents should educate their teen onhow to get help and what informa-tion to share with a friend whomay be in a violent relationship,

Hunter said.“Having these events will help

start the conversation and discus-sion about teen dating and vio-lence in a fun and interactiveway,” Hunter said.

All events are free and will

include light refreshments.Robins’ teens are invited to

take the pledge to prevent datingviolence and raise awarenessamong their friends.

DALLAS – Throughout 2016, the Army & AirForce Exchange Service will continue its Because ofYou program, expanding it to honor not only servicemembers but also their families.

“Military families deal with unique challenges,including stress from deployments and frequentmoves,” said Air Force Chief Master Sgt. SeanApplegate, the Exchange’s senior enlisted advisor.“The focus of the Because of You program for 2016allows the Exchange to express gratitude for notonly the sacrifices of active duty service members,but also military spouses and children.”

The Exchange launched Because of You in 2015,using monthly contests to reward authorized shop-pers while saluting the military through themes thathonored active duty service members. Last year, theExchange and vendor partners awarded more than$175,000 in prizes, including Exchange gift cards,trips, MILITARY STAR® card statement credits andmore.

In 2016, the program will continue to honor serv-ice members while celebrating the contributions ofthe military family. Themes will focus on militaryspouses, children, parents, veterans – and even pets.

The Exchange is planning several contests through-out the year to support the program, with the firstcontest expected to kick off in April.

“The sacrifices of service members and their fam-ilies all over the world are inspiring,” Applegatesaid. “They are true American heroes, and this pro-gram is one small way the Exchange can say ‘thankyou’ and give back to them. The Exchange looksforward to honoring troops and families throughoutthe year.”

Exchange shopping experience.That’s why the Exchange is inviting shoppers to

sound off on their experiences 365 days a year witha new Customer Satisfaction Survey, located athttps://surveymonkey.com/s/MyExchSurvey.

Previously, the Exchange gathered shopper feed-back through its twice-yearly, store-level CustomerSatisfaction Index, which was administered by anoutside company. The new survey is performed in-house, allowing the Exchange team to view respons-es in real time and respond to areas of concernimmediately.

“We have revamped our shopper feedback systemto make it as simple as possible for shoppers tospeak their minds,” said Applegate.

“We want to hear everything those we serve haveto say about their experience shopping with theExchange, especially if it’s in an area where wecould use a little improvement.”

Moving the survey, as well as the Exchange’sinternal employee survey in house will save theExchange about $730,000 per year in fees to the for-mer outside service provider.

What does your work involve at Robins? “My work at Robins involves receiving andchecking in a variety of properties. For example, aircraft parts, GSA items, furniture, etc. So, prettymuch everything that’s labeled for Bldg. 2059.”

What do you enjoy most about your work? “Honestly I enjoy the people. I feel likeeverybody’s different in their own way, and I find that fascinating.”

How does your work contribute to the Robins mission? “The mission I do contributesgreatly to mission capability assets supporting 16 E-8C aircraft items across four combatant com-mands and geographically separated units.”

Who has been the biggest influence in your life? “I would have to say my parents,because of everything I have watched them undergo, and still find a way to provide. Also, they havebeen married for over 30 years, and that’s amazing in my book.”

What is the best advice you’ve been given? “The best advice I’ve gotten was that what-ever I’m enduring at a particular time or moment in the military – it will never last forever. So why notcherish the moments.”

What is something people would be surprised to know about you? “I am theyoungest of my brothers, and I don’t like grasshoppers or any flying insects.”
