Changing Faces Whos new and whos moved

What will 2016 bring?Change is consistent in everything we do and experience. Here are some 2016 predictions for change in the air conditioning, refrigeration and heat pump industry.

The Internet of Things No longer will air conditioning, refrigeration and heat pump systems work in isolation. Its not just computers that will have an IP address, the internets way of identifying a machine connected to it. Data collected from each unit will help move the industry away from reacting to climatic conditions to predicting them and becoming more efficient.

The industry will continue to grow But, where? Some analysts predict the global industry will grow by 7% between now and 2020. Greatif your business in the Asia-Pacific region. What about closer to home? Anecdotally, it is still tough out there but new entrants into the market need to work hard at developing relationships to stand a chance of getting their systems considered.

More mobile If your website is not mobile-friendly, youd better make sure it is, quickly. This industry is shifting rapidly to the internet for finding information. We know that ourselves. Over 30% of our website visitors do so on a smartphone or tablet PC. A year ago, it was 5% or less. So what? People cant be bothered to hang about on websites which are not mobile-friendly, so you lose a chance to help them. Get your website fixed and get more business.

Finally, we hope you enjoyed the 2015 issues of the ACR Journal in their perfect bound style celebrating our 25thanniversary. Have a great, 2016!

    Addendum

In the November issue an article about

    TQEnvironmental suggested that they place

leak detection sensors under beds in hotels.

This is not the case. It leads to false readings

from refrigerants used in aerosol cans for

    deodorants and antiperspirants, for example.

TQEnvironmental places them in smarter places

to make their systems more accurate.

EJM BUYS CRYOTECH SYSTEMSRefrigeration, air conditioning and ventilation specialist, EJM Engineered Systems Ltd announced today that it has agreed to buy Derby-based CryotechSystems Ltd.

EJM chairman, Matt Morton, confirmed that, on Friday 4th December 2015, he and Crytotech Systems managing director, Ron Mearns, had agreed on terms for the County Durham-based to buy the Midlands-based business for an undisclosed sum.

The deal is a good fit for the companies which both work in the industrial and commercial refrigeration sectors, as well as in air conditioning and ventilation. Geographically, the deal means that EJM can extend its service southwards in the UK more easily, making use of the skilled engineers in Derby to serve customers more locally. In turn, EJM can now service Cryotech customers in the north too.

Cryotech Systems was formed in 1982 and EJM in 1980. EJM Engineered systems has seven skilled engineers working from its offices in Shotton Colliery. Cryotech Systems has four engineers in Derby. Ron Mearns will continue working within the new business for the next three years, at least, as engineering director. The businesses will continue to trade under their own names for the time being, until the final details have settled in.

INTEGRAL MOVES INTOINDUSTRIAL REFRIGERATIONIntegral UK announced in November that it is moving into the industrial refrigeration and the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) markets. The company is well known for its mechanical and engineering and building maintenance services. Two years ago, Integral UK bought the troubled WR which helped it move into the retail and commercial refrigeration services market.

Integral UKs managing director, Bryan Glastonbury said:We have listened to users in the industrial refrigeration market

who require a quality service. Our response has been to broaden and extend our refrigeration capabilities in this area.

The move into industrial refrigeration appears to be a logical expansion of its business. The company has branches across the UK and Ireland, providing a local service nationally already. It has around 100 refrigeration engineers in the field helping both small, local customers and national chains.

Hiring the SkillsBryan sees an opportunity to use its existing skills and technology gained in commercial refrigeration and air conditioning to help it move into industrial refrigeration. He spotted the need and has hired in talent to develop the new business.

David Bostock, who previously was the managing director of GEA Refrigeration, and is currently Chairman of ACRIB, is to lead the new division. Graham Young and Adam Bowey, both formerly with GEA Refrigeration, have joined the team too. Young is the new sales director. Bowey, the new Industrial Projects Director.

Bryan added that the new hires were just the beginning of the process of moving into the industrial refrigeration and HVAC sectors. Integral has over 80 apprentices in the company each year to address the skills gap.

The new business will provide the full gamut of services including industrial refrigeration design, installation and after-sales service. Given that Integral UK already has qualified refrigeration and air conditioning engineers across the nation in its 16 offices.

Industrial refrigeration is a great way into the industrial market. It is a core part of their process, said Bryan.

CHEMOURS TO MAKE400 PEOPLE REDUNDANTRefrigerant manufacturer, Chemours, is to reduce its workforce by 400 across its global operation over the next year, the company announced this week.

The decision affects employees and contractors and will save the company around $50 million a year. The job losses represents 5% of its total workforce and will cost the company about $45 million in the last quarter of 2015. The decision is part of the companys plan to lower its costs and restructure so it can focus more closely on its core businesses.

Chemours president and CEO, Mark Vergnano stated:We continue to make significant progress executing

against our five-point transformation plan by streamlining our portfolio and our organizational structure. The actions announced today will allow us to focus our resources on our core business segments, operate more efficiently, and strengthen our financial position. I want to express my sincere thanks to all the employees who are affected by todays announcement for their contributions to Chemours.

    ONE MILLION POUND

    INVESTMENT FOR MANOR CONCEPTS

    ManorConcepts, theBedfordshire-based retail refrigeration unit

manufacturer is to have 1million invested into a factory upgrade.

The company is getting a new assembly hall, and a new, larger

showroom, as well as a new automation for its existing plant.

Manor Concepts hopes the buildingworkwill be complete and

operational early in 2016. The investment is coming from its new

    owner, Arneg.

    MD,Mike Tucker said:

By sanctioning this level of investment Arneg, our Italian

parent company, has demonstrated its ongoing commitment to

expanding theManor business in the UK.

With larger, moremodern facilities wewill be in a better

position to support the UK refrigeration industry, increasing our

range of products and providing an improved service to both the

existing Arneg distributor base aswell asManors current and

    future customers.

TheManor Concepts factory will have three flexible

production lines built into the new assembly hall whichwill give

the company for capacity tomake and assemble awider range

of its retail refrigeration units. The existing assembly will allow

them to grow the existingmanufacturing capability of their

    display cabinet door solutions.

Tim Bound, Director, Transtherm Cooling Industries

    MIDLANDS HVAC MANUFACTURER

    SMASHES TURNOVER TARGET

    TransthermCooling Industries, the Coventry-basedHVAC

systemmanufacturer, has smashed its turnover target for

its financial year, the company announced today.

Transthermmatched its turnover from the 2014-2015

financial year in first eightmonths of this year. They

expect to have increased their turnover by about 50%by

April 2016. The company put this success down to better

economies of scale andmaintaining quality while reducing

their costs, whichmeans they have beenmore competitive

    price against foreign competition.

Given that UKmanufacturing is still, officially, in recession

(according toONSfigures), Transtherms success is all the

    more remarkable.

Another factor in their good news, is the flexibility

and technical knowledgewhich their 32-strong team

offers. This sets them against their competitors and

helps their customers with their energy efficiency needs

    more effectively.

The business is not complacent, however. Given the

increasing international interest in and pressure to provide

solutions to prevent climate change, Transtherm believes

its outlook is positive. Many of its systems are used at

renewable energy plants and data centres where energy

    efficiency is paramount.

Transtherm sales director, Tim Bound said:

We have recently recruited excellent new talent into the

    sales andmanufacturing teamwhich hasmade

it possible for us to sell andmanufacturemore

    equipment than ever before.

Due to changes in government legislation

we are seeing a big increase in cooling

    systems for the power generationmarket.

    Weare also enjoying amuchgreater interest

    in our packagedproducts from thebuilding

    consultantmarket due to their unique

    designs and simplified use.

WINS CLIMATE CENTERSUPPLIER OF THE YEAR AWARDMiddlesbrough-based, high vacuum, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment expert, JAVAC was recently awarded Climate Centers 2015 Supplier of the Year Award.

The award is not easy to win. Climate Center has a gruelling and rigorous set of measures and feedback from across the company from which it assess its suppliers. The measures and tests include how much technical training and support JAVACs team provides, how good they are at providing stock replenishments, as well as customer support.

JAVAC has moved up Climate Centers ranking system over recent years, and the business has now achieved the ultimate supplier accolade.

Steve Davies, Managing Director, Javac, said: I was very proud to receive the award on behalf of the whole JAVAC UK team. It is a real group e ort - from everyone in the branches to accounts, sales and marketing.

Climate Center, Managing Director, Andy Wighton said: Working in partnership with our key suppliers to create value for the whole supply

chain is really important to us. Were proud to be associated with such an outstanding supplier and its been great to see how successful we can be when we work together.

BEIJER REF BUYS HRPBeijer Ref, the Swedish owners of Dean& Wood in the UK, announced today that it has bought British refrigeration wholesaler HRP.

Beijer Ref already owns 44% of the HRP shares, which it bought in 2009 when it purchased Carrier Corporations refrigeration wholesale business in Europe and South Africa in 2009.

HRPs existing 15 branches across the UK will work alongside and complement the Dean & Wood and RW Refrigeration Wholesale business. HRP carries about 10,000 products in its range from brands including Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Samsung, Toshiba, Danfoss, Copeland, Lawton, BOC, Aspera and LUnite.

HRP has found it di cult to make consistent pro ts in the UK on its 37.7 million (SEK 500 million) turnover. However, Beijer Ref sees opportunities to make use of its existing logistical operations in the UK to make HRP pro table.

Beijer Ref CEO, Per Bertland said:With the acquisition of HRP, we

consolidate Beijer Refs operation in the important UK market. The three companies will continue to operate under their respective brands. However, through the joint group a liation, we will be able to o er even better service and more e cient logistics, which improves our total o er in a competitive market.

Buying HRP makes Beijer Ref the market leader in the UK with around 98 million in annual sales from its three businesses in the country. The UK is the companys second biggest European market after France. The agreement was signed on 18th November 2015 and comes into e ect on 1st January 2016.

Looking at a statistical analysis, a key

nding from the initial researchwas that

    more andmore youngpeople are starting

to join the Institute potentially the result

    of the past fewyears ofworkingwith

colleges anduniversities to raise the prole

of refrigeration. The challenge nowwill be

to ensure that they are providedwith the

    right development opportunities and links

to pursue their career in refrigeration.

Following on from this initial research

project, the IORwill be looking even

deeper into youth engagement in the

industry and comparing this to other

engineering bodies and results in dierent

countries. This new project aims to

explore inmuchmore depth some of the

    key issues such as:

    Whether there is a curriculum

and skills gap in education and

    apprenticeship schemes,

Themedia hype behind the lack of

    interest in engineering careers,

    Innovative learning techniques including

    How, as amembership institution, the

    Thepurposeof the currentwork is to

gain a deeper understanding ofwhere the

    refrigeration industry needs improvement

in delivering a younger, highly trained and

    of recently employedgraduates and

This time, though, Id like to use the column to pose a series

of questions about howwe as an industry train installers on the

best use of air conditioning controls.

As amanufacturer, we know that we have some of themost

advanced control systems available, yet we often nd end users

who are using these vastly technological resources as little

more than an on and o switch.

    1. Do you think that manufacturers in general supply enough information to you

the installer to enable you to properly convey all of the potential and benets

that building operators can get from their controls?

    2. Is this even something you bother with? Do you have

the time? Or do you just handover a control manual

    on leaving?

    3. Are the right people there when you handover

the system or do you feel that someone should

be there to represent the manufacturer and help

    train the end user?

    4. Should manufacturers nd ways of offering training

on controls directly to end users or is this stepping into

    your territory?

    5. And what about control companies?

Do you think they would benet from

    andthe loadsforeachroomhavebeen

    Our theoretical two storey building,

whichwe introduced in the first column,

has a floor area of 160m

    2

    per floorwith

    openplan and cellular offices.Different

    tenants occupy eachfloor.

    Choosing the Controls

    Wehavedecided togowitha three-

    pipeheat recoveryVRFsystemfor

    eachfloor.The lackof space for lots

    of condensingunits ifwewentdown

    thesplit routeprevents this choice for

    simultaneousheatingandcooling.

At this stage there are several things

that we have to take into account. The

    customermay have requested two

different quotes. For example, quote one

for all ducted indoor units and quote two

    for all cassette indoor units.

For open plan offices youmay need

    to group-control several units together,

so only one controller is needed, not one

    per system.

    The customermay requiremore

    advanced control and require central

control or a BMSsolution. This all needs

    to be taken into accountwhenquoting

tomake sure all the extras are supplied.

    For example if there ismulti

    tenancy andelectrical

    apportionment is required,

    a BMS interfacewould

    be needed.

    When quoting a

    VRF systemmost

    manufactures have

    a design/quote

    program to help put

    together a full package.

Fujitsus technical team takes you through the process and pitfalls of an air conditioning project from start to after sales. Here

James Richardson, Fujitsus technical engineer, looks at the quote and customer proposal.

    &THECUSTOMERPROPOSAL

What to Provide in the Report

The days of sending the customer just

a price for a VRF are long gone. Most

customers now expect to have a full

    report alongside the quotation.

    The largertheproject, themorechangeswill

    occurandthemoretime it takestoconvert

    the initialenquiry intoanorder.

    Additional considerations thatmay need

to be addressed in the event of an order:

Are there any planning restrictions that

    may affect your design approach?

    Site structural issues? These

may require the services of a

    structural engineer.

Landlord permissions? If the client is

a tenant, has permission to proceed

    been obtained?

    Financials.

    Project time scale/programme.

    Changes to the Report

How you present your report is

important. Inmost cases it will be sent

    by e-mail with some attachments,

    such as product pictures andCAD

drawings. However, for some clients it

may be better to present the quotation

in person. This way any questions can

be handled there and then and you can

take time towalk the client through your

decisionmaking process. It also gives you

the chance to gauge the reaction to your

    offer on the spot.

    Next time -installation planning and

    on-site works.

    The following informationwould

    now be expected:

    EER, SEER, Pipe work schematic,

    Wiring diagrams (schematics), Noise date,

Indoor unit details, Outdoor unit details,

    Options, Materials list,

    Refrigerant quantity,

    Refrigerant pipe-work sizes

When producing the quote you are

also able to submit a full report. This will

ensure a full and professional package to

impress the customer and provide them

with all the information they require.

    That said, there are occasionswhere

    providing toomuch information canwork

against you, especially if it finds its way

into the hands of your competitors. This

is where you have to know your customer

    and judge howmuch information

    to provide.

    When selecting

    the indoor units

    wewill also need to take

    into account a suitable remote

Tell us about your employer, Hitachi

    Ourfactory is located inasmallvillage in

    Vacarisses,around35kmnorthofBarcelona.

Since the 1st of October 2015, two

    large companies have joined forces:

    JapaneseHitachi and American JCI, thus

    forming JohnsonControls Hitachi Air

Conditioning. The two have very different

cultures, so it will be an exciting challenge

for us to integrate the best of bothworlds.

Our activity is the design, production

and sales of air conditioners and heat

    pumps for commercial, industrial and

residential use, with capacities up to

    50kW;We also producewater chillers for

    space cooling or industrial processes,

    with capacities up to 1200kW.

The company has 350 employees, of

which 20 staffmembers work in R&D and

    11 in testing laboratories.

What attracted you to the industry?

A lot of things. I likemy job, a lot. I like to

    work togetherwith peoplewhohave very

different profiles. I also like to investigate

    and understandwhy something happens.

Almost every day, I go back homehaving

    learnt something new. Themost negative

side is that there are almost nowomen

in this industry field, eitherwhen I attend

meetings inAsia, or evenhere in Europe. It

is a shamebecause I think this largelymale

    dominated atmosphere could truly benefit

    fromagreater female influence.

Are you amember of any institutions

and what benefit do you get from them?

As a personal matter, it is not

applicable. But as a company, we are a

    member of themost important group

    industry associations in Spain and

    Europe. For example, we participate

    in voluntary independent product

    testing programmes that provide the

    foundations for fair competition on

equal terms and based on comparable

data. This ultimately contributes to the

improvement of the image and integrity

of our company and the whole industry.

What do you specialise in now?Or,what

type of projects do youwork on?

    I have beenworking on twomajor

projects since February. The rst project

is the reinforcement of testing in

    electromagnetic emissions and immunity

    for our units.We have constructed

    a Faraday chamber and developed

    What do you knownowabout the

    industrywhich youwished you had

    knownbefore?

    The industry has becomemuchmore

    technical and professional, and the

    required degree of expertise and

    knowledge is incredibly complex. Group

    management, to coordinate the diversity

    of cultures, is becomingmore and

    more necessary.

What excites or interests you about the

industry and your part in it now?

    The evolution towards amore global

    world, with solutions becoming

    increasingly local.

    Also, the ever-accelerating evolution of

new technologies and how this eects our

    jobs on a daily basis.

What would you say to other women

who are considering coming into the

    ACR industry?

Theirminds should be open to continuous

learning, since our eld and our world in

thewider sense are evolving very quickly.

    TheHVACworld is very interesting, with

its deep interaction of industry elds,

    distribution, customers. R&D All of

which foster the development of dierent

    professional skills.

They should be brave and condent that

any job doneby aman canbedone just as

well as by awoman. Youmay sometimes

feel lonely in ameeting room full ofmen,

but inmy case, I have never felt lacking in

    recognition or attention.

    Where do you see your

    career developing?

On the one hand, it requires a deep

    specialisation, which I have already

    acquired duringmy career at Hitachi.

On the other hand, it also requires

generalisation. I think that the evolution

    will be towardsmoremanagement-

    oriented positions, without forgetting

    those day-to-day operations that require

    follow-up and improvement.

    Thenew joint venture between JCI

andHitachi brings a lot of opportunities

for global knowledge. There are some

uncertainties in Europe, but I understand

    e

that everythingwill progress and ensure a

better future for the company and its sta.

    What are the challenges

    of this industry?

To contribute to higher comfort standards

in society with our HVAC equipment,

    with units allowing perfect temperature

    control. Also, to contribute towards

    signicant environmental improvement,

supplying products with low noise level

    and high energy eciency.

What are the benets of being in your

    role (e.g. travelling, variety, monetary?)

The variety of technical knowledge gained

    will be permanentlymastered for decision

taking in the future. I face questions

    and challenges continually, and the

    satisfaction of successfully solving them

is extremely rewarding. Finally, to see the

    Personal attributes of an engineer

What about the personal attributes that

make a good engineer? Are engineers

bornwith it, learn it or absorb it from

    mentors by some strange process

of osmosis? The Royal Academy of

    Engineering produced a report titled

Thinking like an engineer - Implications

for the education system in 2014 that

    makes some thought-provoking points.

    The report identifies key engineering

and are encouraged to follow the six

    The client companies benefit by

    getting an adaptable workforce and

    the apprentices benefit because there

is no such thing as a job for life and

they need to be adaptable to stay in

  • Samsung had a big week, recently. The South Korean company kicked off its global campaign to introduce four new air conditioning solutions for the domestic and light commercial markets. They flew out the international ACR press, several hundred partners and customers to learn about products which Samsung hopes will help them reach further into new and existing markets.

    O U T A N D A B O U T26DECEMBER/JANUARY 2016 acrjournal.uk

Samsung arranged a slick round of 5-minute presentations on each product and a launch on stage reminiscent of another, USA-based technology companys product launches. It was delivered with a punch and focused on performance and style from the new products.

When the manufacturers have products made in a similar ways using similar components, what can Samsung do to make their solutions stand out?

Will Hawkins fl ew out to Seoul, South Korea, to visitSamsung at the launch of its new air conditioning products.

    OUT AND

took us to their research lab and centres. The former is the biggest I have seen from any manufacturer to date. Its massive. In one area, we went from a solar radiation zone which was +35 degrees C to a simulated outdoor environment of -22 degrees C. They switched o the lights in one test chamber and turned on lasers which showed the distribution of the air in the room. There are sounds labs too which have visual sound sensors so you can see where they noise is coming from in a room. The detail Samsung goes into is staggering.

More impressive, however, was Samsungs research centre in another part of the city. The company recently built six o ce blocks and installed di erent heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems into each of them. The HVAC systems cost $15 million and they are connected to a control centre where a team is monitoring them. The control room looks more like NASA than any HVAC control centre Ive seen before.

In the main building, they are comparing its hybrid HVAC system with a set-up in another building. The building we visited uses its latest VRF system with a ground source heat pump system, both feeding a water circuit into which heat energy is

Big investmentShowing how e cient your air conditioning system is compared to your competitors is one way to di erentiate. It is a powerful tool, and one area where you have to keep investing in research and development to make sure you are ahead of your competitors. Samsung has invested big money into its new air conditioning systems.

    To illustrate the investment, Samsung

added or extracted. Themain load for the

building is cooling. Excess heat is stored in

the ground or, in winter, used tomelt snow

    on the car parks.

    Circular Style and impact

The product which stood out of the new

    line-up is Samsungs 360Cassette. Given

    thatmost air conditioning cassettes are

square, the name of Samsungs product

is a give-away on its shape. The circular

cassette is not only a refreshing shape,

its a capabilities are different too.

    Insteadofpumpingcooledorheatedair

    four-waycassettes, the360sends theair

    out in amoreevencircle fromtheunit.That

    means theconditioningair ismoreevenly

    spreadwhichmakes itmorecomfortable.

    Sowhat?

    Given thatmanyofficeworkers sit near

an indoor air conditioning unit set into the

    ceiling, the 360overcomesoneparticular

    problemwith four-way cassettes, namely

    draughts.Often, sitting near a four-way

indoor unit, you can find yourself blasted

with cold orwarmair in your face. That

    quickly becomesuncomfortablewith

    either over-heating or over-cooling.

    Nosuchproblemswith the360Cassette.

    It hasno louvresand, instead, sendsout

    theair in acircular fashion.Thatnotonly

    preventsan over-concentration of air in

    onedirection, but alsomakessure the room

    isevenlyheatedorcooledmorequickly.

If you prefer to send the air vertically

down, the unit allows you to do that. Or,

you can send the air into specific zones in

    a room.

    AnaspectofSamsungsnewproducts,

    The360Cassettefits innicely.Moreover,

    Samsungsaysyoucanhave it anycolour

yourwant so it blends into the room.

The 360 cassette is a premiumproduct

therefore it is likely to bemore costly than

a four-way indoor unit. Samsung have not

confirmed the price yet. However, they

are confident that its better performance

will make this a strong choice because of

its looks and its lower cost of ownership

    over its lifetime.

    What about refrigerants?

Whenquizzed about their position on low-

GWP refrigerants (e.g R32), Samsung is

stickingwith R410a for the timebeing. The

    alternative refrigerants havemerits but

    Samsunghas not done enough research

    anddevelopment yet towarrant using

    refrigerants like R32or R290 (Propane).

    Samsung VRF

Samsungs next product is less about

the design (it looksmuch like any other

    outdoor VRF unit) andmore about

    Space-saving is a primary benefit

of Samsungs DVMS Eco 14HP side

discharge VRF unit. Its designed for flats

and office buildings where end users need

tomake use of the space on their roofs

for other services (e.g. gardens or sports

areas), or if they dont have the room for

    larger, traditional VRF outdoor units.

    Samsungs new chiller

    EU F-Gas regulations have pushed

    Samsung to develop its newDVMChiller.

The company realised that to enter the

chillermarket it needed to focus on the

    He continued saying that they

recognise Samsung has a big potential

to grow outside of South Korea. They

know they are behind but they have

now addressed this by investing in the

    people, products and processes they

need to be successful. Samsung has

    been patiently designing, testing and

developing its products tomeet the new

market conditions before setting o on an

    expansion program.

    Mostcontractors tend to focuson

    thecapital costofHVACproducts.

    Thisprobablyhappensbecause it is

    hard formanufacturers todierentiate

    Therefore, contractorshave littleoption to

    Samsung is, without doubt. serious

    about expanding its business. The

massive investments show it. Its new

product range is impressive. However, do

they have enough boots on the ground in

the UK to compete. Lets hope so.

    Why is Samsung not

    more dominant in the UK?

The company has an impressive range

    of products, immense research and

    development capabilities, and scalable

production capabilities. Why is it not one

    of the topHVACmanufacturers in the

UK? I asked Samsungs Charles H. Park,

Samsungs vice president of their Home

    ApplianceDivision this question.

Mr Park stated that the company had

not been ready tomake its big push into

the UK (or countries other than South

Korea). Samsung had not neither the right

products nor infrastructure in place to

make their entry successful. The business

  • The results of the tight competition were announced on 10th December at The Belfry, near Sutton Coldfield in the Midlands in front of 175 guests from across the industry over a festive lunch.

Seventeen entrants were whittled down to six nalists by the panel of independent judges from across the industry for the 6th annual awards to celebrate and encourage young talent into the air conditioning and refrigeration industry. Entrants into the Awards have to demonstrate a commitment to learn, hard work, teamwork and great customer service skills.

The training companies and colleges nominate their trainees for the awards and bene t from funding from money raised at the event. Since it started as the Fred Jamieson Memorial Lunch, the Awards have raised over 25,000 which has been invested back into helping provide the best training resources for trainees and apprentices.

This year the ACR Trainee of the Year Awards raised around4,000.

The Winner of the 2015 ACR Trainee of the Year Awards is Joshua Lincoln from Adcock Refrigeration, trained by Channicool .

    The Winners

Here is what the judges said about the

    winner, Joshua Lincoln:

    An outstanding and incredibly strong

    application. Joshuas submission

    clearly demonstrates his keen interest,

attitude and approach to his working

career. He took the time tomake his

    submission presentable, the content

    complete and the supporting information

    comprehensive. His list of qualications

    and especially the references from

    customers was impressive. He clearly

demonstrated and detailed his work to

date and I am sure his plans tomove into a

management roll will come to fruition.

    Peter Coupewas one of twoHighly

  • Its hard to believe that the latest round of F-Gas Regulations has been with us for a year. Most of you probably havent seen a great deal of change but for A-Gas at the top of the refrigerant supply chain its a different story.

Through the new quota system, we, like many others, are now subject to caps on the amount of refrigerant we can introduce to the industry. In 2016 things get tighter as we are faced with the rst step down year. This will see a seven per cent reduction (on a CO2 equivalent basis) in the amount of refrigerant we can place on the market. So, 2016 is the year to prepare as the F-Gas regulations may begin to bite at end user level.

Slow to Move Away from R404AMany have not grasped what the changes are going to mean in practice. While commentators have talked at length about them, this has not been translated into a shift in buying behaviours and 2015 was a year of slow progress in the movement away from R404A. I expect business as usual will continue until the point we see shortages of R404A and I suspect in the year ahead there will be a lot less of this refrigerant available on themarket.

The industry has yet to understand the full implications of the quota system. For engineers its very much business as usual but for those of us higher up the

supply chain we can see whats coming down the road and to meet this challenge its important to ramp up the education process. Every commentator who has evaluated the F-Gas Regulations says that whatever happens over the next two years we will be working in a very di erent world in 2018.

In 2016 the focus needs to be on R404A replacements. There are two ideal candidates on the market Opteon XP40 (R449A) and Solstice N40 (R448A). Both have low GWP (Global Warming Potential) credentials and are closely matched to R404A in terms of refrigeration capacity. They are already in use and although it is early days, it is clear that they are a key part of the solution to leave R404Abehind.

A Look at Leak DetectionF-Gas has brought about a change in the way we look at leak detection and this aspect of maintenance programmes is growing in importance. As it is no longer based on kilograms in a system but on a CO2 equivalent, the engineer has to calculate some of these values to evaluate the leak detection frequency. As a result we are seeing the introduction of new electronic and online-based tools to assist the engineer.

monitoring refrigerant and cylinder usage easy. This new tool is indispensable for engineers and is a device that makes the F-Gas Regulations simpler to understand and implement. These advances in technology are changes in the industry that engineers cannot ignore.

In 2016, lifecycle management of refrigerants will grow in importance. As part of this, A-Gas is now o ering an oil disposal service which will take away the tricky problem of getting rid of this waste product from refrigeration and air conditioning systems in a safe and environmentally-friendly way. Up until now this has often been a piece of the puzzle missing for manycontractors.

A Mildly Flammable SituationIn 2016 we will also see the nalisation of European refrigeration standard EN378 which will hopefully provide the clarity that the industry is needing on mildly in ammable refrigerants. In 2015 we saw the rise of these refrigerants with R32 making its mark. They are a big part of the future in air conditioning and whatever people say, sales are going togrow.

R32 is not the only mildly ammable refrigerant that we are going to see entering the market. Some of the lower GWP alternatives for R404A planned for release with the 2022 product ban in mind mean that the industry has to get its head around how it handles these gases. The legislation has some catching up to do but change will have an e ect.

At some stage during 2017 the European Commission will review the progress of the F-Gas Regulations. This line in the sand, pretty much what they did in 2011 with the original F-Gas Regulations, means that further developments will certainly be on thehorizon.

One thing for sure over the next few years is that the industry will not be standing still. These are without doubt times of change in refrigeration and air conditioning. So do not miss the bus and be ready to use the regulations to the advantage of your business.

    Implications

Although a ban on the use of virgin R404A

does not apply until 2020, its availability,

and products like it with a high GWP, could

become much more restrictive in just

    Lower GWP alternatives to R404A

This month we will be looking at one of

    the replacement options on themarket,

R407F. Look out for our follow up article

next month that will focus on other

    lower GWP alternatives.

    R407F, also known asGenetron

PerformaxLT, has been around for a

while now and is in widespread use both

in new and existing equipment to replace

R404A in awide range of applications for

    the commercial and industrial sectors.

    Its a refrigerant blend of R125, R134a

and R32, with a GWPof 1825 just over

half that of R404A at 3922.Whilst it

    is used in supermarket applications

it is also used in cold stores and food

    processing applications that have

    previously used R404A.

Users have been pleased with the

    energy saving benets witnessed

compared to R404A and there are

    numerous case studies that have

    veried the energy savings achieved

    compared to R404A. These savings

tend to be greater in medium

    temperatures applications. Some

    customers have also reported that

Performax LT has also been easier to

detect for leaks than R404A, which is a

positive insight when you consider the

    importance placed onminimising leaks

    and conducting regular leak checks

by the F Gas regulation. Experience

of using R407F is also widespread

    across Europe.

    that arenowavailable for smartphones.

    A number of compressor

    manufacturers approve R407F and it

can be found in their design software

for usewith their products. There is

also no need for an oil type change as it

works with POE oil, the same as R404A,

although please remember that if you

are retrotting to follow the conversion

    guidelines andwhen changing refrigerant

it is good practice to also change the oil

and put a fresh charge into the system.

    The potential energy savings

    compared to R404A arewell highlighted

in case studies. This alone has been

the driver for some end users to

    change fromR404A, however, with

the need to signicantly reduce the

bank of R404A theremay be other

more pressing reasons very shortly to

change. Its important that we as an

    industrymove away fromusing R404A

    soon and PerformaxLT (R407F)

is one of a number of favourable

    replacement options.

    Do also speak to refrigerant

specialists, such as ourselves, to review

all the options that are available to you

and ensure it is the right choice for your

    particular system.
