Hurricane Sandy knocked out power to the entire lower east side of Manhattan — including several hospitals, one being NYU Langone Medical Center. Over the course of 13 hours, roughly 1,000 staff, faculty, medical students, emergency crews and volunteers evacuated more than 300 patients — down many flights of stairs lit only by flashlight. But every single patient, family member and the evacuation teams made it through safely and without injury.

One of the many on the front lines was ACRM MeMbeR, John CoCoRAn, DPT, PT, MS, CeRT.MDT, clinical assistant professor, Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, and director of inpatient rehabilitation therapy at NYU Langone’s Rusk Rehabilitation. Certified as a super-user of the lightweight transport Med Sled devices, Dr. Corcoran was among those who helped coordinate and lead the teams that safely transported patients — some down 15 flights of stairs — to waiting ambulances for transfer to other hospitals.

“It could have been chaotic — but it wasn’t,” said Dr. Corcoran. “It was exhausting and physically demanding, but everyone was focused on their job to stay calm and well-organized to achieve our key goal of getting everyone out safely.”

Corcoran describes the sheer size of the operation and the seamless collaboration among a variety of health and safety professionals as incredibly impressive. Nurses, physicians, security personnel, physical therapists, occupational therapists, therapeutic recreation clinicians, secretaries, medical students, administrators and countless others contributed their specialized training and commitment to the patients to form truly interdisciplinary teams, a concept that hits home in the area of rehabilitation medicine.

Corcoran also noted that the therapists used their clinical expertise to ensure the safe transfer of patients as well as to monitor the physical well-being of the staff and emergency crews. This oversight became important, given the exertion and strain associated with lifting and transporting many patients down several flights of stairs.

ACRM Media Blitz Special

Rehabilitation clinicians have a valuable online resource available for educating and supporting patients who have sustained spinal cord injury (SCI) and their families at www.FacingDisability.com.

Vicki Hill sustained a spinal cord injury in a 1986 diving accident, resulting in tetraplegia. Vicki had the opportunity to participate in a peer-mentoring program, and her parents, Robert Hill and Thea Flaum, recognized how powerful and supportive the experience was for Vicki to meet others living with SCI.

They founded the Hill Foundation, a private operating foundation to provide an online resource for individuals with recent spinal cord injury and their families. FacingDisability.com is specifically created to connect families for mutual support through shared experience and provides answers to critical questions.

FacingDisability.com contains interviews with more than 100 people with spinal cord injuries and their family members — parents, spouses, and children — addressing critical questions about living life with a spinal cord injury. There are more than 1,000 excerpts from these taped interviews available on the website.

With the goal of helping patients and family members find critical information quickly, FacingDisability.com also contains video of spinal cord injury experts addressing common questions received from patients and family members. They recorded over 400 answers to key questions that arise when an injury is new, and provide links to more than 200 spinal cord injury resources on the web.

Included are interviews with David Chen, MD, Medical Director, Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Program, Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago speaking on Spinal Cord Injury 101; Kim Eberhardt Muir, MS, Program Specialist — Spinal Cord Injury Program, Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago speaking on Preventing Pressure Sores; and Allen Heinemann, PhD, Professor, Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University speaking on Substance Abuse and SCI.

Like real-time programs, Facing Disability’s online peer-mentoring program introduces people with new injuries to others who have some experience living with a spinal cord injury. In so doing, patients learn how to think about disability and live with a new body experience. Facing Disability offers more than well-intentioned advice; the videotaped interviews provide an honest and unvarnished voice of experience.

FacingDisability.com also provides a similar peer-mentoring program for parents, family and friends to deal with new life situations they face as a result of their loved one’s injury.

Product vs . Company logothe following are AcRM’s guidelines for the use of product logos:

» A product logo can be placed on a non-educational sponsored item as sponsorship recognition.

» A product logo cannot be used for general recognition (overall course banners, website page, publications, etc.)

» the product logo can be a logo only, and cannot contain any quantitative or comparative language, price information, or other indications of savings or value, an endorsement or an inducement to purchase, sell or use the product or service.

Sponsor logo Requirement and UseAcRM will need your logo as a Vector-Based ePs format in full-color and in b/w, as well as JPeG, GiF or tiF file format. this is to ensure that you receive the highest quality logo recognition.

All logo recognition will be in full color for digital (web/screen) and full color format when possible in print. however, single color (b/w) may be necessary as determined by the AcRM Marketing department.

On most specialty items, logos will appear in either black or white. when additional colors are available the sponsor will be notified, and if they so choose can pay any additional costs to add colors. Logo size will be based on the following criteria:

» the level of sponsorship (this will determine size of logo in relation to other logos on general sponsorship banner)

» sponsored item (AcRM Marketing team will determine the appropriate size for item)

when multiple colors are available for specialty items, the AcRM marketing staff will determine the appropriate color choice based on product availability and consistency with Annual conference theme.
