“Comprehensive Soldier Fitness, or CSF, is a comprehensive training program that helps

Soldiers and Family members with self-confidence, personal effectiveness and resilience in times

of adversity”.

Sounds a little intimidating? Maybe a little stuffy? Well Comprehensive Fitness is for Families

just as much as it is for Soldiers….after all who puts up with more challenges and frustrations than

people who marry Soldiers? Even though the Army has given this a name that sounds very formal,

the experience itself is customized and tailored to you and to your lifestyle! Yes! That’s right. The

Army has designed this NOT to be one size fits all!

The Army contracted with the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia to develop and to teach

us how to teach. I know! It’s amazing that this was not conducted at Fort Benning or Fort Sam

Houston or some other Army training base.

The reason I point all this out to let you know the Army has done something special to help you

navigate all the pitfalls. It all starts by using the Global Assessment Tool better known as the GAT

(you know we love some acronyms)! Seriously, I am asking you to give this a try. I think you’ll find

it is something that really can be fun and beneficial at the same time.

Take a few minutes to take the “GAT” and let me know if I was right by “ICEing” us on our Face

book site: www.facebook.com/baumholderacs (look for the “ICE ACS” tab).

Take care,

Coping with

DeploymentBy Mandy KruszweskiFamily Advocacy Program Senior Educator

Just hearing “deployment” sparks

overwhelming emotions in military families.

Though there are positive pieces to

deployment, the majority of families approach

this time with worry and fear. As one parent

leaves for their duty downrange, the parent

who stays behind takes on more than just

double duty. The at-home parent must deal

with his or her own feelings of anxiety and

loneliness while taking care of the children and

helping them to cope. How can you as a

parent deal with deployment let alone help

your child cope?

Part of our job here at ACS is to make

massive problems manageable. ACS is

offering three classes to arm you with

strategies to conquer the difficult task of

helping your child cope with deployment.

The classes are geared toward parents of

three different age groups, 0-5, school age,

and teen/preteen, and they teach about

reactions and typical difficulties specific to

each age group.

Even if you and your children have been

through a deployment before, it’s likely to be a

very different experience at different ages and

stages of development.

Your child who refused to leave your side

during your first deployment at age 4 may now

become withdrawn and have difficulty

concentrating at age 8. Your 9 year-old who

acted out with behavior problems during the

last deployment may now seem to be sick all

the time as a teenager. There are many

different reactions to deployments and many

different ways to support your children through

this tough time.

If you arm yourself with all the tools you can

to help your children stay strong and resilient

you can make deployment manageable and

even positive for your family. Call ACS at

DSN 485-8188 or 06783-68188 for class

times and registration!

For the past month things have

been busy in the world of

Emergency Placement Care.

The Garrison is gearing up for a

deployment and things may seem a

bit out of sort.

With May just a few months away

and it being Foster Care

Awareness Month, we at ACS are

working hard on getting the

message out that Baumholder

needs families who would be willing

to provide Emergency Placement

Care for our community.

Here at ACS in Baumholder, we

get a couple clients a month who

inquire about adoption while

stationed overseas.

Adoption is a realistic option for

military members and their families

who may be looking to add on to

their family while overseas. There

are a variety US – based adoption

agencies and licensed social workers

who can do a home study while you

are living overseas. However the fist

step for service members who want

to adopt is to identify the laws

governing adoption in your home

state of record which can vary quite

a bit from state-to-state.

A great stepping stone towards

becoming a parent through

adoption is to become a certified

Emergency Placement Care

Provider for your military

community. Becoming an EPC

provider demonstrates an ongoing

commitment to at-risk children.

The application, training, and

home study process involved in

becoming an EPC (which is

free) can be good preparation

for the more costly and in-depth

home study involved with

adoption.

These short-term Emergency

Placements of military children

in your home can be great

practice and preparation for

adoption. If you are interested

in becoming and EPC provider

please contact ACS for an EPC

provider orientation.

The Emergency Placement

Care Coordinator can be

contacted at mil 485-8188 or

(06783)6-8188.

New Parents Get All the Support

Army Families overseas face an array of challenges. As new parents we hear of our friends and family back stateside that have a support system close by and yearn for the days that family could come over to offer advice on issues ranging from pregnancy to potty-training .

What many military families don’t realize is that the support they need is in their own back yard!

The New Parent Support Program (NPSP) is a program offered to Army families to enhance parent and infant attachment, increase knowledge of child development, and provide connections to the support services that allow parents to become nurturing and capable caregivers. The NPSP staff consists of licensed social workers and registered nurses who provide in-home parenting education, support, and resource linkage.

What’s best yet is that you don't have to be

a NEW parent to participate in the program! Army families that are pregnant or with children through the age of three years are eligible for NPSP services.

We also offer several classes a month in a group setting to help you to feel more at home in a military community and so you can make lasting friendships with other parents in the area.

One class example, Newborn Network, is a support group geared towards parents with babies up to twelve months old. At each meeting, parents will receive information related to parenting as well as have an opportunity to socialize with other parents that have infants.

New Parent Support Program

Another of our classes, Bringing Baby Home, is one of our outreach programs that covers areas related to prenatal care, labor and delivery, newborn care and development as well as breast-feeding.

With this and more, we hope to provide you the support you need in order to become the nurturing parent your child deserves.

For more information, or to schedule a home visit please contact NPSP at 06378-6-8188.

They are here one month and gone the next.

The life of a Military and Family Life Consultant

(MFLC) can be hectic, but that’s the way the

military wanted them.

The idea behind it is that Soldiers and their

Family members would be more inclined to

confide in a person that won’t stick around too

long providing them the anonymity that they

need on a Garrison.

The MFLC Program is designed to provide

support and assistance to active duty Soldiers,

National Guard & Reserves, military Family

members and civilian personnel. Military and

Family Life Consultants can help people who

are having trouble coping with concerns and

issues of daily life to include:

Adjustment/Transition Stress

Marital/couples

Anxiety/Sadness

Deployment Issues

Communication

Aggression

Work

Parenting

Grief/loss

MFLC’s have:

Flexible appointment times

Flexible meeting locations

*Confidential

No Records Kept

FREE

*Duty to warn does apply in cases of threat to self,

others, and any reportable abuse issues.

PTSD and VA BenefitsWhat you don’t know can hurt you

he Baumholder ACS Soldier and Family Assistance

Center (SFAC) would like to update you with current

happenings at the VA that could affect you or someone

you know.T

Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki announced a

critical step forward in providing an easier process for

Veterans seeking health care and disability compensation for

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), with the publication

of a final regulation in the Federal Register.

This final rule simplifies the development that is required for

these cases.

The VA expects this rulemaking to decrease the time it

takes VA to decide access to care and claims falling under the

revised criteria. More than 400,000 Veterans currently

receiving compensation benefits are service connected for

PTSD.

Combined with VA’s shorter claims form, VA’s new

streamlined, science-based regulation allows for faster and

more accurate decisions that also expedite access to medical

care and other benefits for Veterans.

PTSD is a medically recognized anxiety disorder that can

develop from seeing or experiencing an event that involves

actual or threatened death or serious injury to which a person

responds with intense fear, helplessness or horror, and is not

uncommon among war Veterans.

Previously, claims

adjudicators

were required to

corroborate that

a non-combat

Veteran actually

experienced a

stressor related

to hostile military

activity.

For additional information, go to www.va.gov or call VA’s toll free benefits number at 1-800-827-1000. From Germany dial the toll-free access number 1-809-463-3376, and then dial the toll free number dropping the 1.

FEDERAL RESUME WRITING TIPS

You’ve been in Baumholder enjoying the

beautiful countryside and sampling the local

cuisine when, all of a sudden you think,

“maybe it’s time I get a job”. You’ve put the

finishing touches on a beautiful work of art you

call a “resume”. You’ve made sure that you

dotted your “I’s”, crossed your “t’s” and you

feel that it is finally ready to be scrutinized by

even the most discriminating eye.

You’re sure that it will go directly to the

hiring official who’s anxiously awaiting its

arrival! But before you apply for a federal job,

there’re some things you’ll need to know.

First, no one will see your resume; at least

not right away. Fact is that job applicants are

lucky if an actual person ever reads any if it

unless it makes it passed the initial screening.

Consider this; the Kaiserslautern Military

Community (KMC) has the largest

concentration of American Citizens living

outside of the United States. There are

approximately 60,000 Americans eligible to

apply for jobs in the KMC. If only ten percent

of them apply for a given job that would mean

an employer would have to sort through 6000

resumes! But that is only if the job was only

open to local residents. Given the fact that

most local federal jobs are advertised for

World-wide hiring, the number of resumes

would be staggering!

To tackle this problem, the Office of

Personnel Management (OPM) relays on an

electronic screening system otherwise known

as an Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to

manage the sheer volume applications and

weed through all the applicants. But what

does that mean to you?

This means that the better you

understand ATS programs, the better the

odds that your resume will actually make it

to the desk of the selecting official. The

Army use a UNIX based system to sort,

match and reply to applicants seeking

employment.

Resumix, as the system is known,

stands for “resumes on Unix” and has been

available for over 20 years. Resumix

streamlines the application process and

ensures that, in the end, the selecting

official is presented with only the most

qualified candidates, after they have been

review by the servicing Civilian Personnel

Office. The selecting official then interviews

candidates prior to making the final

selection.

Other Government agencies use similar

ATS applications for the same reason. For

example, the Smithsonian Institute utilizes

an ATS called STARS (Smithsonian

Tracking + Application Referral System)

which is an integrated system for supporting

the recruiting and vacancy application

process. Continued on next page

Federal Resume Writing Continued

It is designed as a complete application

management system that manages the job

application process from initiation through

candidate selection. The system also serves

as a communication tool between applicants

and the Smithsonian Office of Human

Resource, as email notifications are sent to

applicants through the application process.

Systems such as the Resumix and STARS

can be accessed by visiting the employment

websites of the agency you’d like to apply to,

or by visiting www.usajobs.com. USAJOBS

acts as a clearinghouse for ATS applications

from many different Government Agencies

including; the Federal Bureau of Investigation

(FBI), Department of Health and Human

Services (DHHS), All Department of Defense

agencies (DOD), and literally hundreds of

others!

For help in applying, call or visit Army

Community Service (ACS); there you’ll find

free resume assistance available to any DOD

ID card holder. The ACS, Employment

Readiness Program has resume specialists

who are waiting for your call. Let us review
