Minutes of the Saint Joseph Valley Local Section of the American Chemical Society Minutes Issued: June 18, 2014 Meeting Date: June 16, 2014

*Matt Odom (Chair), *Daniel Brown (Past Chair), Abe Brubaker (Councilor), Phil Bayes (Member-at-Large), Andy Edelbrock (Filterpaper Editor, Alt. Councilor & Webmaster), *Pat Boettcher (Treasurer), Patsy Boehler (NCW Chair) & *Roger Fleming (Secretary), *Coilin Walsh (President Elect), Kayode Oshin (guests) *Present

Resolutions Approved:

1. We approved the expenditure of up to $1000 total to be split among one or more local chemistry teachers of our choosing to defray costs of attendance to attend the conference at Grand Valley State.

Action Items:

1. Dan will contact Al Rioli to let him know the ACS is indeed interested in holding a joint meeting with the local engineering societies at Fair Oaks Farm near Monticello IN. Dan will also ask AL if it would be acceptable for us to extend the invitation to the ACS local section in which Fair Oaks is located. http://fofarms.com/

2. Matt will contact Doug Sisk to see if he is interested in attending the BCCE meeting this year. Doug was selected in our appreciation of his tireless efforts in arranging the Chem Olympiad. Matt will ask Doug for suggestions of other deserving teachers in case since we could subsidize more than one with the amount we authorized for expenditure.

3. Roger and Andy will serve as a committee to explore and organize if approved a local section cookout shortly after the return of college students for the fall semester.

4. Roger will contact Doug Sisk for a list of students who participated in the Chem Olympiad. While we have opened the Bittig-Free scholarship to Chem Olympiad and SEED participants, there have been no applications from that vector. That may be due to short memories. The application is limited to seniors, whereas sophomores through seniors may be participating in SEED and Chem Olympiad. A list would facilitate the local section to remind these participants of their eligibility for application for the scholarship their senior year.

5. Pat will obtain a list of project SEED students who are eligble to apply to the Bittig-Free Scholarship. 6. Pat will drop the check book off to Matt while he is indisposed for performing treasury duties. 7. Pat or Matt will email Roger the longer nomination for Doug Sisk’s ACS Volunteer award so Roger can

forward it to the South Bend Tribune to publicize Doug’s receipt of said award. 8. Matt will check to see what Abe’s status as section councilor. Abe anticipates a move out of the

section.

Other Business Items Discussed

We have two eligible applicants for the Bittig-Free Scholarship. We have authorized up to four $500 scholarships. The low application count was the reason for extending second tier eligibility to Chem Olympiad and SEDD students and the attempt to be proactive to remind these students of their eligibility to apply their senior years.

George Twaddle from Ivy Tech has an ongoing genetic engineering program that is continued by a new group of students each year. He asked if the local ACS would be receptive as being an audience for his students to practice with before making their presentations at technical meetings. It is unclear if the presentation is a poster or a Power Point presentation. Andy suggested that if they would be willing to put together a Power Point presentation, we could pay them a speaker’s stipend ($300) to be used for subsidizing their registration/travel to present at a technical meeting. Matt will contact George to explore the possibilities.

Our section was audited for reporting the election of officers for this year as having been elected this year. The auditor suggested the results be indentified as being for the 2013 election of 2014 officers. With the fulfillment of the chair elect position (Coilin), it should be easier to hold our elections in a timely fashion this year.

Next Dinner Meeting

Possibilities are shaping up for a joint meeting with the engineering societies at Fair Oaks Farm; a back to school barbeque; and George Twaddle’s Ivy Tech Biotechnology Group.

Congratulations students and good luck in your college endeavors.

The local section of the St. Joseph Valley American Chemical Society is calling for volunteers to run for our 2015 elected offices. This year, the following positions are available. How would you like to have input in speaker selection or decide how the section spends your hard earned dues money. If you like volunteering your time to a worthy cause and feel that the only compensation you need is a pat on the back, an occasional “Well Done” and to be treated to a fine meal every dinner meeting, then any of the positions are for you. Please send your self-nomination to Matt Odom- 574-256-7797 or [email protected]

Chair- Elect (3 yr commitment- Chair 2016 - Past Chair 2017)

The Chair-Elect becomes the Chair the following year and Past Chair the next year. As Chair Elect, you are instrumental in helping plan the ACS speakers for the following year of your “Chairship”. In addition, the local section sends you to all-expense paid ACS-sponsored vacation/training course in one of our fine cities scattered in the continental USA. As Chair the following year you will be responsible for running the executive committee meetings and submitting the annual report.

Councilor (3 yr commitment)

The Councilor is responsible for representing our section at the ACS National meetings twice a year, summarizing the ACS National business meeting and any changes affecting both the local section and our members and submitting the report to the Executive Committee and for inclusion in the Filterpaper. The Councilor is also responsible for approving our Annual report to National. The section pays for the ACS meeting expenses.

Alternate Councilor (3 yr commitment)

This person is responsible for representing our section at the ACS National meetings when the Councilor is unable to attend. If the alternate councilor goes to the ACS spring or fall meeting in place of the Councilor, then the section pays for the ACS meeting expenses.

Treasurer (1 yr commitment)

Treasurer’s responsibility is to keep the books and to write the checks to cover the activities of the local section as well as provide the executive council a monthly “state of the section” financial report. The treasure also fills out the financial section of the Annual report submitted in January of the next year.

Secretary (1 yr commitment)

The Secretary’s responsibility is to document the executive committee meetings through minutes and provide to the ACS National Office the results of the Elections.

Member-at-Large (1 yr commitment)

The Member-at-Large’s responsibility is to provide member feedback at the executive committee meetings and be available to help where needed.

The local section of the St. Joseph Valley American Chemical Society has been asked to join the SAE International in November for a tour of the Fair Oaks Farm. The date has not been finalized as to this printing but will be either November 1st or 8th. Hopefully the date will be determined prior to the next Filterpaper publication where more details will be available. If you wish to be added to a contact list, please contact Dan Brown at 574-256-7754 or [email protected]. We will provide more information as it becomes available to those on the list.
