Commodore’s CornerIs it Spring yet? I hope that everyone is having a comfortable Winter. So far we haven’t had as much snow as Norman, but I am sure that will change as soon as I write this. We have a busy schedule for winter activities planned out. John Zoll has bun busy with the charting classes over the past month. We will have our Racing Rules Workshop coming up and the Racing Tactics Workshops after that. Before we know it, we will be back at Gordy’s for the Dock Pick Day!

Winter is usually the time we work on our boats, preparing them for their return to the water. Many are working on repairs and many on improvements. All are surely performing the vital off-season maintenance that is required to maintain a ship-shape vessel. Personally, I plan on doing all three. We have some repairs to complete, following a rough race during the Old Fox Regatta. Also have a few tweaks we need to do. Then there are the annual

cleaning, polishing and buffing rituals to perform. Ahhhh the fun of boat ownership...

By the time you read this, you should have received your dock contracts for the 2013 season. Remember, these must be returned by March 1, 2013.

We will be having our February General Membership meeting on February 4th at Gordy’s restaurant in Westerville. I would like to invite everyone to come out early and enjoy the food and beverages being served. After the meeting, the program will be Peter Hudson speaking about the 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Lake Erie.

In March, we will be looking forward to the Dock Pick Day on Saturday, March 16 at 12:00pm - 2:00 pm. Come early to order food and drink. The doors open at 11:00 am. The actual dock pick process will begin at noon. We don’t yet have a count of docks that are available for lease and sublease, but anticipate a good number. Remember, even if you don’t get a permanent dock, there are usually more than a few subleases available. Please refer to your dock deposit documentation to review the process.

Before we know it, April first will be here and we will be launching boats! Don’t wait too long to finish the Winter projects that we all planned this season.

Although it is still a while until Splash Day we are busy getting ready for the 2013 Sailing Season. As of this writing we have held Part I of the Racing Rules Seminar with part II Scheduled for January 30th. We had 31 people representing ACSA, HSC and LYC at Part I on Jan. 23rd. Both sessions are being held at Gordy’s in Westerville at 6:30PM.

The new racing rules are out. If you are unable to attend the rules seminar, be sure to review the changes. They are available on line and of course…..there is an “Ap for That”…..you can get the racing rules as an Ap for any Apple devise. You can also order hard copies We will try to do a summary of the “biggies” for the next newsletter.

Starting in February and continuing through April we will have Racing Tactics Seminars. These will be held the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30PM These will be at Gordy’s as well. We invite everyone to come and share their thoughts and

expertise as we cover starts, finishes, mark rounding, overtaking, etc. These are all listed on the calendar on the website.

Race Committee Training will be on April 10th at 6:30 and April 13th at 1:00. These are planned to be at the docks and on the race committee boat. Remember that if your racing, you and your crew will most likely be responsible for race committee at least once during the season. You will be responsible for providing at least 2 race committee members who must be able to operate the committee boat, setting the start line, recording, etc. Please make sure you or a members` of your crew come to one of the trainings or come for a refresher if you need it.

Wednesday night racing starts April 17th. Check the calendar on the website. There are some racing dinners scheduled as well. I am coordinating with our Social Committee Chair, Brianna Foreman, so that we will be handing our race flags during these after race dinners.

And last but not least, I have a collection of racing flags from 2011 and 2012. I am trying to get them to everyone. I got some distributed at the Racing Rules Seminar last week but I still have a couple more people I need to get to. Hopefully, with giving flags out at After Race Dinners, I won’t be carrying any around with me next Winter.

Thanks to everyone for your continuing support and help. I love my sailing family!

Hello ACSA, I will be running the Youth Learn To Sail Program again this year and I’m looking for some additional help! Mr. Mike Walcutt has graciously offered to take care of the class registration again this year. Thank you Mike! I am also looking for two individuals to help in two different areas. I would like a person to assist with the boat maintenance and the second individual to complete the advertising and recruiting for the registration process. If you are interested, please let me know. The classes this year are already posted on the web site for two sessions, each session is $75. The first session is 3 Friday’s on June 7, 14, 21. The second session is 3 Friday’s on July 12, 19, 26. All classes are 6:30 to 9PM.  Last year we had 16 kids that had a lot of fun and many pleased parents. Your help in this fun program, ACSA will continue to show the Columbus area what a resource we are as we continue to promote the sailing experience. Thank you for your support.

Sincerely, Nahum Burt, 414-332-8935

Making Waves 5 February 2013

2013 is finally here and our Bicentennial celebration begins! Last year was one of great hope and success here in Put-in-Bay. The National Park Service staff got things rolling in June with the “Declaration of War” observance. Shortly after that the Perry Group got underway with building Commodore Perry’s iconic “Long Boat” replica. Hard to believe that just over one hundred years ago, newspaperman Webster Huntington and engineer John Eisenmann began a successful campaign to build a monument of national importance honoring Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s incredible accomplishments in the Battle of Lake Erie. In 1915 the Peace Memorial was completed and opened to the pubic providing a view to the battle site,

reminding us why September 10th 1813 was seminal day for America. The Perry Group and the National Park Service are preparing for a summer of memorable events in Put-in-Bay and the Western Basin of Lake Erie from July 4th through September 10th. A fleet of tall ships is scheduled to make their way to our area next August 29th. Ten ports will be hosts, including Put-in-Bay, Middle Bass Island, Kelley’s Island, Pelee Island, Catawba Island, Port Clinton, Windsor, Leamington, Kingsville, and Amherstburg. Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial, The Perry Group and the port cities host 12 days of activities, both on water and off.So as we count down the days until the 200th anniversary celebration we are thankful for the sacrifices made on our

200th Anniversary Countdownbehalf and the continued sacred peace we all enjoy here in Ohio. So get ready, the celebration starts now and continues with the Tall Ships returning to Lake Erie and Put-in-Bay in August. Join us in hosting 12 days of events from August 30th–September 10th .To learn more visit our Bicentennial Committee website at www.battleoflakeerie-bicentennial.com and please subscribe to our blog at http://chasingperry.wordpress.com. You can help us as we head towards the summer of 2013. Please give the “gift” of the Battle of Lake Erie Bicentennial. Contribute to our Perry’s Longboat project, or buy a flare for the 2013 Harbor Illumination (www.theperrygroup.org). We need your help to make the Bicentennial a memory for the ages and celebrate 200 years of peace.

Adult Learn to SailI have agreed to take on the responsibilities of the Learn to Sail Chairman for the 2013 year. If you are interested in volunteering as an LTS Instructor please e-mail me. I am changing a few procedures and adding an Orientation/Introduction class to the course outline. I will also adding some Instructor training classes for all Instructors before the season starts. The instructor training classes will help us in our presentation of the course material both in the classroom and on the water. We will practice using training aids and explore developing new ones. I will also be looking at new and expanded marketing procedures to help promote our sailing program. Cabin fever has taken its toll on me and I can’t wait for the sailing season to start. Planning the Coming YearGot your boat projects planned? Did ‘Santa’ put some or all of your project materials under the tree, (or the masts, as it were)? Where are you going next year on your boat or yacht? Those involved in the Charting Lake Erie seminar group met for six weeks thus far and have gotten familiar again with Sandusky Bay and the islands. Wineries on Catawba and Pelee’ are already calling and after Bay Week in August, some of us are looking forward to September at Put-in-Bay and the 200th Anniversary celebration of the Battle of Lake Erie. If the harbor is full, the new State harbor on Middle Bass seems a good second destination, especially since none of us has been there since the renovation. We’ve crossed the lake to Leamington and now it’s time to work our way around the lake’s shore. Beginning Tuesday, January 8th and every Tuesday through February (we

hope) we’ll meet to do our planning. Plotting harbor entry courses, checking out notable navigation aids on the water and ashore, finding the marinas we want to tie up in, and locating the ‘fun’ in the harbors we’re ‘visiting’ is the plan every time we meet.Have a boat to trailer? We have a core group planning to do some away sailing this summer, beginning with Sandusky Bay to see what it will take for a group of us to make an ‘ACSA Squadron’ and fly our burgees past Sandusky Yacht Club and Cedar Point. If you’d like to join us for our meetings, the conference room will let us double our numbers. Here’s the general meeting schedule; Tuesday evenings at 7:00 pm; 400 W. Wilson Bridge Blvd, Worthington, OH (commonly known as Jim Foreman’s conference room). See the LTS page on our ACSA website for similar info, or write me at [email protected].
