Commodore’s CornerHow did we get to October so quickly? The months just continue to fly by. My boat project list has hardly been dented, but the sailing has been pretty good this summer. I recently went to the Newport Boat Show in Rhode Island. It was fun to ‘dream big’ for awhile. I definitely see a New England Away-sail coming in the future!

Although our season is winding down, in the true spirit of ACSA, we plan to have fun right up to the end. The Old Fox Regatta and Party are always one of the highlights of the season. This is coming up the weekend of October 8-9. If you don’t plan to race, Brent needs several volunteers to help run the race. And you definitely don’t want to miss the Old Fox party with the chili cook-off, costumes, and music by “The Usual Suspects”. The OSU-Nebraska game will be showing also. Don’t miss this season-ending blowout!!

Unfortunately, our boats come out shortly after that. Haul out day is October 15th. The ramps close on the 16th at 10 PM. Those that wish to stay in beyond that date will need to lower their mast in the water and motor under the Cheshire bridge to haul out.

Once the boats are out, there will be a Fall Work Day at the marina. Watch the Twolist for details. Next up after that will be the Christmas Party on December 3rd. Then we head into the off-season. As always, we will do our best to keep busy with fun activities until we next splash our boasts. Neal is working on a BVI trip for February 2012. There’s not too many better ways to get through the winter than to break it up with some Caribbean sailing!

It’s almost officer election time. I will be moving on after serving 3 years as Treasurer and 2 years as Commodore. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved so if you have a desire to serve the club, now is your opportunity to step forward.

Our next General Meeting will be on Monday, October 3rd, at Gordy’s. The agenda includes Officer nominations, and discussion/voting on the proposed Bylaw changes. Loren Hart from Alum Creek State Park will be there to present drawings of the ramp upgrade project. Come out early for dinner and the meeting will start at 7PM.

See you on the water! Try to get out and enjoy the last few weeks of the season!Jim Klein

The 10th Anniversary of Away Sails!!

Does anyone remember exact year of the first big BVI trip? I think it was 2002? I do remember in September I heard about this club trip and I was intrigued. There were 4 or 5 boats reserved for an ACSA trip to the BVI’s in February. Interest grew quickly and by October there were 7 boats with deposits made. Fast forward three months and you find there are 6 boats each with 5 people we just met or barley knew. By the time we arrived in Tortola there were 51 people from Alum Creek and 11 boats ranging in size from our “little” 42 ft to the Beneteau 51.5 foot, all with only one paid skipper in the group.

On our boat there were 4 people who had never sailed. Some new guy (new to sailing), John Mason, was on board. Marcia Trout, a new associate member, had never driven a sail boat and wouldn’t until next to the last day. Mikie Gray join the crew only a few days before we arrived in Tortola. Dive Instructor Rick and Liz rounded out the crew. Looking at that little group on our boat, Mikie, Marcia, John, and I are all still close friends all very active members of ACSA. This is the kind of friendship building and camaraderie that comes with this kind of adventureThere may never be another trip like that

one.. but what it has spawned is 10 years of far away sails.

Since that first big trip there have been at least 10 additional BVI trips by various club members. Some as an ACSA group others on their own. Other winter trips have been to various other locations from San Diego to the Bahamas (Doug Waldron must have half a dozen bottles of rum hidden in various places there). We have also had trips to Antigua & Barbuda, the Grenadines, Jim Libinsky’s trips to the Florida Keys. The Peyers’ trips to The Dry Tortugas and last year Tom Wehrung lead yet another ACSA trip to the BVI!! If I were to guess I would say with repeat trips, Alum Creekers have made over 200 individual trips to the BVI!There is so much more to tell but there isn’t sufficient room for all of the stories here. So why do we keep going back? Well... what IS the draw?? Start with snow in Ohio and great weather, 84 degrees everyday, in the BVI. Don’t forget the beaches, rum, many natural attractions, easy wonderful sailing conditions, the perfect place first experience sailing “big boats”, island hopping in those beautiful surroundings, rum, good scuba diving, friendly people who speak english, trade is in US Dollars (still) and the beauty of the BVI.Plus great camaraderie and relationships that develop on a vacation that you just cannot understand until you have done

Neal Heiser, Monohull Fleet Captain

it.. These are just some of reasons that we catch the BVI bug. For me, the biggest, the absolutely biggest is “living the dream” of really, really sailing on big water. When get there you will pinch yourself and say YES!! I am here! You will never regret doing this trip. I challenge each of you to make it on this 10th anniversary trip, for some of you it will be your first of many! Live your dream!

Please see, call or write me for more information about this great adventure!Neal [email protected] [email protected]

Be on the lookout (sometime after Old Fox) for upcoming BVI away sail planning dinners. Currently we have 10 people on the “very interested list” and 4 who are on the “the boat is reserved list”. We currently have three boats reserved and returning skippers ready to lead the way. There will be a “interested” sign up sheet at the Monday night meeting! See you then and see you in the BVI! Here are a couple web sites to whet your appetite:* A video overview of the spring race but will give you a feel for what BVI sailing is like - http://www.bvitourism.com/* Photos of BVI - http://www.moorings.com/vacation-options/bareboat-yacht-charter/destinations/caribbean/british-virgin-islands/tortola * Examples of boats and pricing - http://www.barefootyachts.com/html/yachts_bvi.htm

Book Review by Macduff Perkins, Sail Magazine, February 2011, pg 16-17

It’s possible I was too busy taking pictures of the rainbow reflecting off the cliffs of Tintamarre to notice the squall coming up behind us. My husband, Trevor, was at the helm as the skies suddenly darkened and the onshore swells jumped from 5 to 15 feet. Our first thought was to put in as soon as possible at Orient Bay, on the northeast tip of St. Martin. But we were losing depth rapidly amid the massive swells near the entrance of the bay, and it went against our instincts to trust our GPS. We knew there was a reef out there somewhere, and that we wouldn’t see it until we were sitting on it. That’s when I pulled out Chris Doyle’s Leeward Anchorages, a companion to his popular cruising-guide series, which features aerial photos and a bird’s eye view of dozens of anchorages and harbors in the Leeward Islands, with graphics denoting shoals, channel markers and recommended entrance routes. In it I read: “It is unwise to enter this bay in rough conditions” and “charter boats have the most problems here.” The guide reminded us to trust our instincts, and with a quick 180-degree turn, we were headed back down the coast to the much more hospitable harbor of Oyster Pond. Highly recommended.

Annual Assisted Haulout Day - October 15thKathy YounkerEach year at the season’s end, ACSA members do their best to help anyone in need of haul out, mast down, or towing assistance. Saturday, October 15, is the scheduled date for that this year, with Sunday, October 16, as a fallback day, in case of rain on Saturday. As usual, I’m starting a roster, listing 1/2 hour time lots that begin at 9:30 Saturday morning, and end by 4:00. Once I receive your request, I’ll add your name and we will plan to help you at your chosen time. To get on the roster, please respond via the Twolist, or to my personal e-mail [email protected], with the following info:

For those unfamiliar with this annual process and plan, please see details listed below. Thanks and see you then!KathyTimes: * Start time: 9:30 AM. A roster will be forwarded to the personal e-mails of all who have indicated a need for help or willingness

to volunteer. Please note your own scheduled times to arrive at the ramp. If you did not receive a roster and want one, please e-mail me at [email protected]* End time: Approx 4:00PM, or when the last boat is outOf Note: · In case of heavy rains, we will reschedule for Sunday with the same plan & same times. If drizzling, will still haul out on Saturday. · FYI - The mast raising system will be operational. Its duck hunting season, so stay away from the shores. Mikie assures us, though, that buckshot won’t kill you. Haul Out Plan: * One person at the dock and one at the ramp to communicate next-in-line arrivals at the ramp. Please let the dock coordinator know when you plan to leave the dock. * The time on the roster reflects your scheduled “arrive at the ramp time”, so plan to leave the docks under power at least 20 minutes prior to your scheduled ramp time. Ramp times are in half hour intervals, which should allow the previous boat to come out before the next boat arrives. * Beware of shallow spots to the left of the ramp as you approach. Try to approach the ramp straight on, instead of on a diagonal. * Please plan to assist at least 2 other skippers

(before or after you haul out), with mast down, shuttling, or towing assistance. Needed: Please advise if you can contribute · Volunteers with wet suits willing to be in the water for an hour each - let us know when you are available · 2 sets of walkie talkies with good batteries · Refreshments (see below) Power Washing and Storage: · If storing at Acres Aweigh, a power washer will be available for use at the left of the building after you enter the gate. A suggested donation of $5 can be put into the box near the power washer. · Payment for annual storage is expected when you arrive at the lot, or no later than Nov 1. Checks should be made payable to: Acres Aweigh. Refreshments: · Each year many bring coffee, drinks, donuts, sandwiches, fruit, cookies and other snacks to share. If you would like to contribute, your fellow skippers will enjoy it! After Party: * Many often gather after the last boat is out to toast the end of the season. Stay tuned for details of where and when to meet!

* Type of assistance that you are also willing to provide. All volunteers are appreciated, so please advise if you can assist at the ramp, or at the mast raising system; can provide a tow; or are willing to help coordinate the day’s activities.

* Cell phone number * Preferred ramp time, or if flexible* Boat type/size* Type of assistance needed

* Your name
