ADVENTURE PARK AWARDED BEST IN AUSTRALIA

ACT-BELONG-COMMIT ROCK SYMPHONY

NEW COUNCILLORS ELECTED

INSIDE

OF KWINANA 2017DECEMBER

43,000.

That’s the (approximate) number of people who call Kwinana home today - and it’s a number that continues to skyrocket.

In fact, Kwinana is one of the most rapidly growing areas in the entire country; second fastest in WA and eighth in all of Australia, with a population set to more than double in the next 20 years.

Really this should come as no surprise. After all, Kwinana now boasts a myriad of multi-million dollar libraries, community centres, youth precincts, shopping strips and stunning natural vistas. We’ve worked hard, in partnership with local groups, government agencies and commercial operators, to completely transform Kwinana over the past 10 years. I hope you are as proud as I am of how far we’ve come.

If that’s not enough, let’s not forget the brand new, competition-ready Edge Skatepark and the award winning Kwinana Adventure Park, both located on Calista Oval and the latter of which was recently named the best park in the entire country (more on that in the pages to come)! From a healthy lifestyle perspective in particular, it is great to see so many young people riding bikes and skating to and from the Edge, and family members gathering there.

The past few months have been particularly eventful. New Councillors have been elected and the biggest events line-up in Kwinana’s history has commenced. We are also just days away from the loudest and most unique experience Kwinana has ever seen, the Act-Belong-Commit Rock Symphony.

The recent local elections, held on Saturday 21 October, saw 17 candidates nominate for four vacant council positions. The successful candidates were Merv Kearney, Matthew Rowse, Carol Adams and Sandra Lee.

At a Special Council Meeting held on Monday 23 October, Councillors re-elected Carol Adams as Mayor and Peter Feasey as Deputy Mayor for the next two years.

In September, the WA Government announced the formation of the Westport Taskforce – a group of experts who will drive the development of a new outer harbour. The City of Kwinana has been invited as a key advisor to this process, which will eventually see the construction of one of world’s most advanced industrial ports, providing tens of thousands of new jobs (direct and indirect) and annual revenue of over $43 billion to the state and national economies at full construction. It is easily one of most important economic ventures for WA this century and it is in our own backyard.

As another year draws to a close, my fellow Councillors and I could not be more honored to represent each and every member of this beautiful community (all 43,000 of you) and I have no doubt we will carry this enormous momentum into 2018 and continue with our unprecedented revitalisation.

On that positive note, and on behalf of all Councillors, the executive and staff at the City of Kwinana, I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year.

Carol Adams Mayor

Summer is coming and with it comes a time of merriment and festivities for Christmas, New Year’s and Australia Day. With so many reasons for celebration, many find it tough to stay on track with their health goals.

Follow these eight small steps to help make your Summer celebrations happy and healthy:

1. Kick start your event with a small snack such as yoghurt or fruit so you’re less tempted to eat party food.

2. Make your plate brighter! Include colourful fruit and vegetables in your dishes and party favors.

3. Don’t overfill your plate. Veg out and fill half of your plate with those colourful foods, a quarter with meat or alternatives and the last quarter with cereals or grains.

4. Savour every bite and give your body time to feel full.

5. Drink plenty of chilled water

6. Cut back on the oil when cooking meat and trim skin and fat before cooking. Try the grill, stir fry or barbeque for a leaner way to cook.

7. Be active before the day is over. Get your family together and walk around your neighbourhood, hit Kwinana beach for a swim or hit the Kwinana Adventure Park for hours of play. Not only is it great time for your family, you will also get fitter!

Try one or all of these great tips for the festive season and don’t beat yourself up if you indulge or have a day when you aren’t as active, it’s easy to get back on track with your next meal! Find out more at livelighter.com.au.
