The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create

a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

To this end, the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging

programs of international education and rigorous assessment.

These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that

other people, with their differences, can also be right.

What is Action and Service?

Action and Service in the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) involves three central elements:

AWARENESS

Awareness of what a community is and awareness of the complexities of a community and its different forms.

INVOLVEMENT THROUGH SERVICE

Involvement through service in terms of community involvement and being an active contributor – including showing willingness and the skills to respond to the needs of others, coming up with solutions to actively resolve issues within communities.

REFLECTION

Reflection encourages better awareness of needs as well as the quality of response.

As an IB school, MXIS emphasizes the importance of responsible, thoughtful attitudes towards service to our local, national and global communities. MXIS aims to offer all students the opportunity and the power to choose their actions, to act on them, and to reflect on them in order to make a difference in the world. As part of the MYP curriculum, all students are required to be involved in Action & Service activities.

Action and Service in MXIS

As part of the MYP curriculum, all students from Grade 6 to 10 are required to be involved in Action & Service activities. These activities will be done during Friday afternoon, weekends and holidays.

Action and Service activities should be well-planned. A proposal should be submitted one week prior to implementation of the activities. Action and Service activities without proposals will not be credited.

Action and Service documents (Log, Record and Proposals) must be filed in an A&S Portfolio. This will be regularly checked by the A&S Advisor and approved by the A&S Coordinator. Reflections should be documented in A&S Seesaw. Reflections should be submitted at least a week after the activity was done.

Grade 6 - in-campus service activities only Grade 7- 8 - in-campus/off-campus service activities Grade 9 -10 - in-campus/off-campus/off-shore service activities

Action and Service Portfolio should be updated every Friday.

Learning Outcomes in Action and Service

With appropriate guidance and support, MYP students should thorough their engagement with Service as Action to:

♣ become more aware of their own strengths and areas for growth ♣ undertake challenges that develop new skills ♣ discuss, evaluate and plan student-initiated activities ♣ persevere in action ♣ work collaboratively with others ♣ develop international-mindedness through global engagement, multilingualism

and intercultural understanding ♣ consider the ethical implications of their actions

These learning outcomes identify the substance of students self-reflection on service as action. All of these learning outcomes are closely associated with the IB Learner Profile attributes and ATL Skills. Through participation in Service, students can become more confident, self-regulated learners.

Roles of the A&S Coordinator

A&S Coordinator is responsible for organizing the systems that supervisors and students need for the successful completion of the program, with the support and collaboration of the MYP Coordinator and school leadership team. He will be responsible in approving students’ proposals for activities. He may also visit some of the off-campus activities to ascertain that the activity is implemented.

Roles of the Homeroom Advisor

Homeroom advisor will act as a guide to assist the students when making their proposals. He may suggest some activities that the students may undertake, but will let the students initiate activities as much as possible. He will be responsible for assigning points for every activity done depending on the criteria of the levels of service and weight and length of the activity done. At the end of every quarter, he is responsible for counting the points/hours earned by the students.
