Action Jackson is a 2014 Indian action masala film directed

by Prabhu Deva and produced by Gordhan Tanwani and Sunil

Lulla. It features Ajay Devgn in a double role, alongside Sonakshi

Sinha, Yami Gautam and Manasvi Mamgai as the female

leads. Kunaal Roy Kapur appears in a supporting role

with Anandaraj portraying the main antagonist. Prabhu Deva and

Ajay Devgn have paired for the very first time with this film. The

film was earlier rumoured to be a remake of a Telugu

film Dookudu starring Mahesh Babu, but later on, it was declared

as an original film by Prabhu Deva. Earlier, the film was also

rumored to be released with Akshay Kumar started film Holiday: A

Soldier Is Never Off Duty, but that too was declared as a false

rumor.[2][3] Action Jackson released on 5 December 2014 to

negative reviews from critics and audiences.[4] The film was

declared a flop by Box Office India.[5]

Plot[edit]

Vishi (Ajay Devgn) is a small-time crook who would do anything

for money. He falls in love with Khushi (Sonakshi Sinha), a simple

HR executive, who then begins a relationship with him. One day,

Vishi, who frequently gets involved in fights, publically beats up a

street gangster, who later seeks a revenge attack with his gang.

The gangster and his gang brutally beat up Vishi, and easily

escape the scene. It is then revealed that the person they had

beaten is actually Vishi's lookalike, Jay. On another occasion, a

police inspector arrests Jay and hands him over to a group of

gangsters led by Pedro. Jay single-handedly kills them all and is

revealed to be a professional assassin and previous right-hand

man of underworld criminal Xavier Fonseca, nicknamed AJ. After

AJ single-handedly rescued Xavier's sister Marina (Manasvi

Mamgai) from a bunch of kidnappers, Marina falls for Jay but he

rejects her as he is married to Anusha (Yami Gautam).

Angered, Xavier tries to kill Anusha twice, which leaves her

brutally injured. Jay then escaped to India and is in the process of

getting her treated. When Vishi spots Jay, he reveals his identity

and story to Vishi. Jay then requests Vishi to go to Bangkok

disguised as AJ to fool Xavier and his sister; meanwhile AJ

makes time to get his wife operated on, as she is expecting a

baby. Vishi agrees to help and goes to Bangkok along with his

friend Moosa (Kunaal Roy Kapur). Meanwhile, Insp. Shirke finds

AJ's lookalike and tries to inform Xavier but ended up murdered.

The style of murder triggers suspection. Marina tortures Moosa to

know the truth. He reveals that Vishi is the one who masqueraded

as AJ. Xavier hatches a plan to bring AJ to Bangkok by

kidnapping his wife and baby and threats to kill both. It is revealed

up that Vishi is actually in Mumbai and AJ and himself switched

their places in airport. AJ reaches the spot and kills all Xavier's

henchmen, Xavier self and Marina. The film ends on AJ and Vishi

meets up at airport and AJ advices Vishi to marry Khushi soon.

Critical reception[edit]

Action Jackson received mixed to negative reviews from critics

and audiences. Prarthna Sarkar from International Business

Times gave Action Jackson 1 star out of 5, stating it is a "bad

dream" for viewers.[6] Gayatri Sarkar from Zee News gave 1 star

out of 5, stating that the film failed to entertain the audience.[7] Deepanjana Paul from Firstpost criticised the film for its poor

direction, editing and story.[8] Film critic Rajeev Masand rated the

film 1 out of 5, feeling that the film has excessive violence.

[9] Under a headline calling the film a feminist milestone, Raja Sen

for Rediff rated it 3/5 saying that while the film is filled with

"relentless absurdity", the women propel the narrative in a

refreshing way.[10] Rachit Gupta from Filmfare gave a similar

rating of 3/5, stating that the genre mixing of unscripted comedy

and stylized action is " too inconsistent to garner any

appreciation".[11] Mumbai Mirror similarly rated it 3/5 and

responded positively.[12] Bollywood Hungama rated it 2/5, calling it

a "highly avoidable affair"[13] Similarly the Times Of India rated it

2.5/5, stating that "Prabhu Deva's Jackson also attempts

Tarantino Style Action"[14]
