    Introducing the NXT generation

In 1998 the LEGO Group revolutionised theworld of educational robotics with a pioneeringproduct concept LEGO MINDSTORMS

Today LEGO MINDSTORMS for Schools is used in more than 25,000educational institutions worldwide from primary schools to universities.

Now, an exciting new generation of MINDSTORMS robots is ready tohelp students with ICT, science, maths and D&T concepts througha natural, step-by-step learning process that enables team-working,creative thinking, and hands-on problem-solving.

The new LEGO MINDSTORMS Education features the latest in roboticstechnology along with increased functionality. It is now easier to useand has more possibilities than ever before.

With LEGO MINDSTORMSstudents experience how toapply their knowledge in apractical way and they getto see the results of theirwork immediately. This isincredibly motivating.

    Introducing

the NXT range9797LEGO MINDSTORMS EducationBase Set

    Enables groups of 23 students

to build and programme real life

    robotic solutions. Includes the

    programmable NXT brick, three

interactive servo motors, a rangeof sensors, including ultrasonic

    and sound, a rechargeable battery,

    connecting cables and enough LEGO

bricks to build one model at a time.

    The set includes building instructions.

    LEGO MINDSTORMS Education NXT Software

A powerful easy to use software designedto work with the NXT brick. The software, powered by LabVIEW, is icon based andincorporates a Robot Educator step bystep guide to programming, from beginner

to advanced levels with simulations. Thesoftware is also capable of programming theNXT brick to work with former MINDSTORMSsensors and motors with the help of convertorcables. The software pack includes a digitaluser manual and is licenced for a single user.

    NXT Site Licence Agreement

The site licence allows LEGOMINDSTORMS Education NXTSoftware to be used on anycompatible computer at thepurchasing institution. It is

necessary when installing thesoftware onto more than onecomputer. It is an agreementonly and requires purchaseof 2000077 MINDSTORMSEducation NXT Software.

    Touch Sensor

Using the NXT brick, the touch sensordetects pressure. It is also able tocount single and multiple presses.A LEGO cross axle can be attachedto the sensor button. You will need a

connector cable which is included inthe 9797 Base Set.

    9845

    Sound Sensor

Using the NXT brick the sound sensor isable to measure noise levels in both dBand dBA. It can also recognise soundpatterns and identify tone differences. You will need a connector cable, which

is included in the 9797 Base Set.

    9847

    USB Bluetooth Dongle

The Abe USB Bluetooth adapterenables wireless communicationbetween your PC or Mac and the NXTdevice. The Abe USB Bluetooth adapteris supported by Microsoft Windows XP

(with Service Pack 2) and Apple MacOS X (10.3.9 and 10.4).

    9833

    Charger (9V)

9 volt charger suitable forboth the RCX, and NXTRechargeable Battery.

    9844

    Light Sensor

Using the NXT brick, the light sensor isable to sense light or dark as well aslight intensity in a room. It is also ableto measure light intensity in colours(grey scale sorting). You will need a

connector cable, which is included inthe 9797 Base Set.

    9846

    Ultrasonic Sensor

Using the NXT brick, the ultrasonicsensor is able to detect an objectand measure its proximity ininches or centimetres. You willneed a connector cable, which is

included in the 9797 Base Set.

    9842

    Interactive Servo Motor

Servo Motor with built-in rotationsensor that measures speed, distanceand reports back to the NXT. Thisallows for motor control within onedegree of accuracy. Several motors

can be aligned to drive at the samespeed. You will need a connectorcable, which is included in the 9797Base Set.

    9841

    Intelligent NXT Brick

Programmable 32-bit brick, includingBluetooth wireless communicationand USB port. Programmable dot matrixdisplay. 4 input, 3 output ports. 6-wiredigital platform. 8 KHz loud speaker.

A number of simple pre-definedprogramming commands can be useddirectly on the brick. More advancedprogramming requires software pack2000077. Requires 6 AA batteries or the9798 Rechargeable Battery.

    9798

    Rechargeable Battery

Lithium battery with A/C plug.Designed for use with the 9841 NXT brick.Capacity: 1400mAh.Estimated rechargetime 4 hours.

    Charger available(see 9833).

Opportunities for students todevelop higher level thinkingskills is limitless due to thevariety of tasks, range ofinputs and control aspects

    Bridging the

    RCX generation to the NXT

Everyones excited about the new LEGO

    MINDSTORMS

Education NXT but what ifyouve invested in ROBOLAB and the RCX?No worries, LEGO Education have issueda new version of ROBOLAB to ease thetransition to NXT.

ROBOLAB 2.9 software will allow you toprogram both the RCX and NXT (via USB).It also features new firmware to allow usersfaster processing, more motor speeds, improved programming functions and more.

Meanwhile ROBOLAB users who are readyto get started with the NXT technology willbe able to work in a familiar environment tocreate programmes for the NXT brick frombasic Pilot to high-end Inventor, and datalogging programmes.

The 9797 NXT Base Set includes converter cables for the existing sensors and motorsto allow inter-operability between the two.

So existing RCX users can continue to deliver the ICT, D&T, science and mathscurriculum as before. But the ROBOLAB 2.9 and NXT combination also provides agreat opportunity to introduce personalised learning and extension activities withinthe classroom which maximise the additional benefits of the NXT.

Robotics is bigBoth the LEGO MINDSTORMS for Schoolsand LEGO MINDSTORMS Educationgenerations are ideal for use in after schoolclub environments and competitions, whereyoungsters have time to explore and inventtheir own robotics solutions.

Many schools use MINDSTORMS in their afterschool clubs as well as in the classroom, which means that their students continue toimprove their skills after school hours.

Every year thousands of young enthusiastsaround the world compete in building andprogramming robots. One of the roboticcompetition forerunners is FIRST LEGOLeague (FLL) and today its one of the worldsbiggest robotics competitions.
