When You Hear a Smoke Alarm, Get Out and Stay Out

    Dear Parent or Guardian,

Our class is learning about fre saety through the National Fire Protection Associations Learn Not

to Burn Preschool Program. Today the children learned about the importance o recognizing the

sound o the smoke alarm and what to do when they hear this sound. To help reinorce these impor-

tant lessons, please talk to your child about the smoke alarm in your home.

    Information for the child

What do the smoke alarms in our home sound like?

Push the test button on your smoke alarm so your child will know the sound o the smoke

alarms in your home. Tell your child that the smoke alarm is not a scary sound, but an impor-

tant sound or your home. When the smoke alarm beeps, everyone should go outside. Once

you get outside, you must stay outside. Get Out and Stay Out.

    Information for parents or guardians

Be sure to install smoke alarms outside each sleeping area, inside each bedroom and on every level

o your home, including the basement. Test them at least monthly and make sure everyone can hear

them. Children may not wake up to the sound o a smoke alarm, so you must plan or an adult to

wake them and help them get out. Practice this so children will be amiliar with the sound and what

will happen in your home when the smoke alarm sounds.

For the best protection, install interconnected smoke alarms--when one sounds, they all sound. In-

terconnected alarms are available as hard-wired alarms or as wireless battery- powered alarms. The

best way to ensure that your child understands what to do when the smoke alarm sounds is to prac-

tice a home fre drill. When your child goes through the motions o leaving the home with you as the

smoke alarm sounds, it will help your child know what action to take i there is a real fre.

Please eel ree to contact me i you have any questions about todays lesson.

    Sincerely,

    (Teachers name)
