F Langlois-Eteveneaux cottage & Akaroa museum This house is probably the oldest in Canterbury, circa 1840: it is furnished as the home of a French colonist. At the rear is the Museum with displays reflecting Akaroa’s unique history.

G orion Powerhouse Gallery formerly a Power House, is now a venue for concerts and exhibitions.

H old French cemetery first consecrated burial ground in Canterbury.

I Early custom House this pit sawn and sod lined building dates from the 1850s.

Banks Peninsula was formed following violent eruptions by three volcanoes. The craters nurse the harbours of Akaroa and Lyttelton; smaller bays indent the rest of the coastline. First European sighting by Captain Cook in

1770, Banks Peninsula was named for Sir Joseph Banks, the naturalist. The Peninsula was inhabited by Maori of the Ngai Tahu tribe, whose numbers were severely depleted in 1831 when Te Rauparaha and his warriors attacked the fortified pa on Onawe Peninsula.In 1838 Jean Langlois, captain of the French whaling ship Cachalot, negotiated with a local Maori chief to

buy Banks Peninsula. On his return to France he formed the Nanto-Bordelaise Company which organised for 57 emigrants to leave on the Comte de Paris, accompanied by the warship L’Aube, captained by Charles Lavaud, for the voyage to New Zealand. When Lavaud arrived at the Bay of Islands he was told of the terms of the Treaty of Waitangi and

consequent British sovereignty over New Zealand. H.M.S. Britomart was immediately sent to raise the British flag at Akaroa. The Nanto-Bordelaise Company sold its assets to the New Zealand Company in 1849, the French settlers having chosen to remain at Akaroa. They were joined by a larger group of British colonists in 1850.
