ROCK ART IN THE MAPUNGUBWE CULTURAL LANDSCAPE

Tour de Tuli

Organised annually, the Tour de Tuli_Mapungubwe takes cyclists through the cultural landscape encompassing parts of Botswana and Zimbabwe - added to that it is a wonderful social event plus your funds go towards making a difference in the lives of many children.

Mapungubwe also speaks of earlier times of human habitation. The San and their forebears occupied the landscape in the last 2000 years the area for the last 5.000 years. Evidence of their occupation is documented in the 150 rock art sites.

Rock Art, Fishing, Sundowner Cruises, Gym and Weddings.

DRIVESAlthough you’ll see plenty of game while driving on your own, you’ll learn more about the park on a guided drive. There are morning, sunset and night drives. The park also offers an Eco-Route, which is a self-drive route through some of the more remote parts of the park, as well as a guided trail into a limited motorised zone. These routes offer visitors the opportunity to view the prolific wildlife and geomorphological riches of Mapungubwe National Park.

OTHER ATTRACTIONS NEAR MAPUNGUBWE INCLUDE:

Birding

BOOKINGS:Park Tel: +27 (0)15 534 7923/[email protected]

Because of its new status, the park is relatively unexplored bird wise and with its proximity to Botswana and Zimbabwe, all sorts of species could turn up.

Along the Limpopo species for South Africa such as: • Meve’s (Long tailed) Starling, • Tropical Boubou and • The reclusive Pel’s Fishing Owl should be searched for (one of the local farmers reportedly has one nesting in the yard of his house). There is a high density of Verreaux’s (Black) Eagle in this craggy landscape and other raptors are also prominent.

Pel’s Fishing Owl

Is a new 4 x 4 trail in the Mapungubwe National Park, which gives visitors the chance to experience up close and enjoy the typical natural surroundings of the Limpopo Valley and the Mapungubwe National Park. The route is about 45km and takes about 6 hours. It is primarily an educational and scenic route. The intention is not to test the vehicle’s or the driver’s 4 x 4 skills, although a 4 x 4 vehicle is required to complete the route.

Guided walks are offered from Vhembe Wilderness camp as extra additional activities on request. Visitors can see dinosaur foot print during the guided walks.

Enjoy a view over the confluence of the Shashe and Limpopo rivers where three countries meet...

The confluence look-out consists of a surfaced pathway that provides easy access to several look-out platforms that overlook the Limpopo and Shashe rivers. It has a number of viewing decks which provide great views across the rivers below and give a birds-eye view of this beautiful area.
