“So the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth day of Elul, in fifty-two days.”

Nehemiah 6:15In this Old Testament book is the story of Nehemiah and how heled the third and final group of Jews from Persia back toJerusalem.

Nehemiah was a cupbearer to King Artaxerxes I. This was aposition of great trust. Nehemiah was a great man of prayer. Heasked the king to grant him permission to return to Jerusalem torebuild the wall that surrounded the city. Permission was grant-ed and the task was completed in an incredible fifty-two days!

After the reconstruction of the wall, Nehemiah was instrumentalin the restoration process of the people of Israel. With Ezra con-centrating of the spiritual redemption of the people, Nehemiahconcentrated on their political and moral restoration. In Chapters 8-13 Ezra interpreted God’s law for the masses andwith the help of Nehemiah led them in their reaffirmation of theircovenant with God and the steps they needed to take to obey theLaw of their forefathers.

A long time ago ... God gave messages to his people through prophets. Some ofthese prophecies were about what God would do in the future. There are five key prophecies concerning the birth of Jesus. The first one is in Numbers and refers to the lineage of Jesus. This verse says a messiah will come from the family of Jacob. This prophecy is fulfilled in Luke 3.

The second prophecy again refers to the lineage of Jesus. Thistime the lineage is traced back to King David and Abraham.

The place of Jesus’ birth was foretold in Micah 5:2 and fulfilledin Matthew 2:1.

star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel.”

the son of Abraham.”Matthew 1:1

“After Jesus was born inBethlehem in Judea, during thetime of King Herod, Magi fromthe east came to Jerusalem.”

Matthew 2:1

establishing and upholding itwith justice and righteousnessfrom that time on and forever.”

Isaiah 9:7

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though small among the clans ofJudah, out of you will come for

me one who will rule over Israel.”Micah 5:2

God also foretold the time of the birth of Jesus through theprophet Daniel.

God even foretold of the virgin birth ... hundreds of years beforeit happened.

What we can learn from the story God often gave messages to His people through His prophets.(Later in our study we will learn more about the life of many ofthese prophets.) With the example of the five propheciesabove, we can see how God does fulfill His promises to us. Wecan also see why many people did not recognize the impor-tance of the birth of Jesus. They expected the Messiah to be anearthly king who reigned over a kingdom much like King David. They did not see that He kingdom was far greater. Jesus cameto bring all who believe in Him to His Father’s kingdom inHeaven where we will have everlasting life.

“Know and understand this:From the issuing of the decree

to restore and rebuild Jerusalemuntil the Anointed One, the ruler,

comes, there will be seven ‘sevens’ and sixty-two ‘sevens’.

(‘sevens’ means weeks)

Daniel 9:25

“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virginwill be with child and will givebirth to a son, and will call him

Immanuel.”Isaiah 7:14

“This is how the birth of JesusChrist came about: His mother

Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but beforethey came together, she wasfound to be with child through

the Holy Spirit.”Matthew 1:18

“But the angel said to them, “Donot be afraid. I bring you good

news of great joy that will be forall the people. Today in thetown of David a Savior has

been born to you; he is Christthe Lord.”

Luke 2:10,11

We read a lot about prophets throughout Bible - especially theOld Testament. They played an important role in God’s plan forHis people. Throughout the rest of this study we will be readingabout a lot of famous prophets like Samuel, Elijah, Daniel andNehemiah in the Old Testament and John the Baptist in the NewTestament.

A prophet is defined as “God’s special messenger.” Prophetsgave God’s message to rulers or His people. Sometimes falseprophets pretended to have messages from God. Sometimes itwas hard for the Israelites to tell who were the real prophets andwho were the false ones. The “test” of a true prophet was:

1. He spoke in the name of the Lord2. Everything he said ALWAYS came true

In “A long time ago ...” we studied five different propheciesconcerning the coming of the Messiah. These prophecies werewritten hundreds of years apart! The first one is in Numbers, twoare in Isaiah, one in Micah and the last in Daniel. All five cametrue in the birth of a tiny baby in Bethlehem.

The Ten Commandments is really asummary of all the rules we have today. If we follow them, we will beblessed with fellowship with You and fellowship with others. “And who knows but that you [Esther] have cometo royal position for such a time as this?”

Esther 4:14bEsther is the last history book found in the Old Testament. Theevents in this book took place between the first and second returnof God’s people to Jerusalem. (Between Chapter 6 and 7 in thebook of Ezra.) Esther was being raised by her cousin Mordecaibecause she had neither father nor mother. The king of Persia,Xerxes, was looking for a new queen. He had all of the mostbeautiful women in the kingdom assembled and he chose Estheras his queen. Upon instruction from Mordecai, she did not revealto the king her Jewish heritage.

As the dramatic story of the significance of this beautiful queenunfolds, God shows how He uses ordinary men and women toovercome seemingly impossible circumstances to accomplish Hispurpose for His people. Through the wisdom of Mordecai and thebeauty of the young queen, God saved the Jews who hadremained in Persia from annulation at the hand of Haman, chiefroyal official of Xerxes’ court.

OLD TESTAMENT CHRONOLOGICAL STUDY: Week 17 page 4

A long time ago ... the Israelites followed Moses from slavery in Egypt to freedomacross the Red Sea. But before long they began to complain. They were unhappy because they did not have enough to eat.God sent them quail to eat at night and manna, a thin sweetbread that looked like flakes, each morning. The Israelites thencomplained they did not have water to drink, so God gave themwater from the rock of Horeb.

After three months of traveling through the wilderness, theIsraelites arrived at Mt. Sinai, the same mountain Moses talkedto God in the burning bush. While there Moses went up themountain to talk with God for forty days. God gave Moses thelaws He wanted His people to follow. Theses laws are the TenCommandments. They were established by God to protect Hispeople. Meanwhile back in camp the people began to grumbleagain! They told Aaron Moses probably was not coming back andGod was no longer with them. They convinced him to gather thegold they had brought from Egypt and to make a golden calf forthem to worship. When Moses returned and saw them dancingaround the idol, he became very angry! He smashed the twotablets with the Ten Commandments on them. He then burnedthe golden calf, ground it into dust and mixing it in water madethe Israelites drink it. God further punished the people by strikingthem with a plague.

What we can learn from the story God showed a lot of patience with the new nation of Israel. Heheard their cry for help when they were slaves in Egypt and setthem free. God then provided for all of their needs by giving them

The term LAW has specific significance in the Bible. It means“the standard of God” and referred to the way the people wereto express love for God and for each other. Basically there areten great laws, or commandments, found in Exodus 20. Theseare known as The Ten Commandments. Exodus 21 - 23 alsodescribe several laws. These actually are illustrations, or casestudies, of the ten great laws.

The Ten Commandments are divided into two categories. Thefirst four commandments are in the first category. These are thelaws that focus on our relationship with God.

You shall have no other gods before me.You shall not make for yourself an idol. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

These four laws appeared on the first of the two stone tabletsMoses brought down from Mount Sinai.

In the second category are the laws that focus on our relation-ship with each other.

Honor your father and mother. You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. You shall not covet anything that belongs to others.

We are first taught to give reverence to God. He is to be first inour lives. Second we are told to love others as ourselves. Wecan only do this by showing respect to those around us.

concerning the new Nation of Israel was to be made?

TEACHER’S PRAYER:Dear Lord. Today there is much talk about the break-up of the family. Thereis much discussion about “alternative lifestyles.” How sad! Just as the fam-ily was important for the nation of Israel, it is important today. It is within thefamily we are supposed to protect each other and provide instruction infunctioning as a society as a whole. It is no wonder kids are confused, angry and frustrated today! They see the adults around them solve theirproblems by getting mad and leaving. They do not have conflict resolutionmodeled for them. “If things get tough, leave.” How sad! No wonder kidsare filled with anxiety and fear! The message is clear ... if they screw upthen someone they love will leave them! What an insecure generation wehave produced! Lord, please help me to be someone in my student’s lifethat he can count on to be there. Let me show him the way to You! You arethe best friend he could ever have. Allow me to mirror Your love. Let usbring back the importance of the family to these kids!

OLD TESTAMENTFive Books of Poetry

There are five books of Poetry in the Old Testament. These areJob, Psalm, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs (orSong of Solomon.) They do not add any historical significanceto the story of the people of Israel, but do emphasize a lifestyleof godliness. They thank God for who He is and what He hasdone. Another term used to refer to these five books is “wisdomliterature.”

Bible poetry is different than what we think of as poetry today. Itrelies on how thoughts fit together rather than the way wordsrhyme. This is done in three ways:

• The second line repeats the thought in the first line.IE. “Blessed are they whose ways are blameless,

who walk according to the law of the Lord.” Psalm 119:2

• The second line is opposite to stress the first line.IE. “Reckless words pierce like a sword,

but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” Proverbs 12:18

• The second line adds a thought to the first line.IE. “I will lie down and sleep in peace,

for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.”Psalm 4:8

“Though He slay me, yet will I hope in Him.”Job 13:15a

Job is the first poetry book of the Old Testament. Although thisbook was written many years later, historically it is said to be setin the time around the time of Abraham back in the book ofGenesis. That is because Job’s wealth was calculated in terms ofthe livestock he owned and lack of reference to Israel and theMosaic Law.

There are three major parts of the story of Job. The first part is adiscussion between God and Satan, the second is a debatebetween Job and his friends, and the third is the deliverance ofJob and his friends.

Job opens with a dialogue that takes place in heaven. Satandeclares no one loves God for nothing. He declared Job lovedGod only because God had blessed him. God then allowed Satanto strike Job by causing him intense suffering. Within days he losthis all ten of children, all of his livestock, all of his servants andhis health. With his friends he debated the basic question of thisbook, Why do the righteous suffer if God is loving and if He is all-powerful? Although God never answers this question, Joblearned he was to rely on the sovereignty of God and must trustin His goodness in adversity by expanding his concept of God.

OLD TESTAMENT CHRONOLOGICAL STUDY: Week 18 page 5

A long time ago ... there was a man named Jacob who had 12 sons. Rememberhim? He was Esau’s brother. He was Joseph’s father ... theJoseph with the beautiful ornamented coat who had the elevenbrothers and one sister. Joseph saved his family from famineyears after he was sold by his jealous brothers. (See how all thestories are beginning to fit together?) When Joseph moved hisfather Jacob and his entire family to Egypt, the family grew andgrew. Each of the twelve sons had twelve families and they grewand grew. The families grew so much that by the time Moses ledthem out of the land of Egypt 430 years later, there were about600,000 men ... not including women and children! (Exodus12:37)

When Moses and the Israelites (remember Jacob’s name waschanged to Israel?) arrived at Mount Sinai, they camped there forquite a while. God gave Moses very specific directions for build-ing a Tabernacle, a place where He would meet with the people, and how the Israelites were to set up their campsites around it.Eleven of the twelve families of Israel’s twelve sons were to becalled tribes. Each tribe and the remaining family were assigneda specific area to camp around the Tabernacle. (Numbers 2:1-31;3:21-38) (See the diagram after this story. You may enlarge it ona poster or overhead transparency.)

There are two important points concerning the tribes of Israel.First, Moses and his brother Aaron were from the family of Levi. This family was chosen by God to serve as priests and to carefor the Tabernacle. Because of this distinction, the family of Leviwas not considered a tribe. They were not to be soldiers. When

they did get to the Promised Land, they were not to own any land, but were to live among the tribes as their spiritual leaders.Looking at the diagram of the camp ground around theTabernacle, you will not see “Levites” mentioned. That isbecause Moses, Aaron, the Merarites, the Gershonites and theKohathites were all Levites. Their campsites surrounded all foursides of the Tabernacle. Moses and Aaron camped independent-ly from the rest because Moses was the leader of the people andAaron was the high priest.

Now, if Levi was one of Jacob’s twelve sons and his family wasnot called a tribe, where did the other tribe come from? Look atthe diagram of the campsite again. Who is the most famous sonof Jacob? Joseph. Do you see a tribe named after Joseph? No.Joseph had two sons named Ephraim and Manasseh. Do yousee their names? There are actually two tribes of Joseph, notone!

What we can learn from the story Moses had a very special relationship with God. After his talkGod in the burning bush, he had many conversations with God.Moses is a very prominent person in the Bible and we spend alot of time covering his life. He not only obeyed God by leadingHis chosen people out of Egypt, but IN EVERY INCIDENCE HEFOLLOWED GOD’S DIRECTIONS! God used Moses to unfoldHis covenant with Jacob by entrusting him with the leadership ofthe new Nation of Israel. (See Week 11)

OLD TESTAMENT CHRONOLOGICAL STUDY: Week 18 page 8

Lets travel back to Genesis to find out where the twelve tribesIsrael started. When Jacob fled from his brother Esau to live withhis uncle Laban, he was of age to take a bride. He fell in lovewith Rachel, Laban’s youngest daughter, and asked to marry herin exchange for working for Laban 7 years. Laban consented butwhen the 7 years were up instead of giving Rachel, he gaveJacob his oldest daughter, Leah. Jacob loved Rachel so muchhe worked another 7 years to have her as his wife. Now Jacobhad two wives. (It was acceptable to have more than one wife atthat time.) Leah became pregnant first. During the next severalyears she had four sons: Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah.Rachel became jealous of her sister, so she told Jacob to takeher maidservant as his wife. (This was also acceptable in theirculture.) Rachel’s maidservant had two sons: Dan and Naphtali.Leah took her maidservant to Jacob and she had two sons: Gadand Asher. Then Leah had two more sons: Issachar andZebulun. (That’s TEN boys in case you have lost count!) Leahbecame pregnant one more time. This time it was a girl, Dinah.(Poor girl!) Now Rachel finally became pregnant and had twoboys: Joseph and Benjamin. In all Jacob had 12 boys and 1 girl. But the story does not end here.

When Jacob returned to his father’s home and he was reunitedwith Esau, his name had been changed to Israel. Years laterafter his son Joseph moved him and his entire family to Egypt, after 430 years passed and they became slaves, and afterMoses led them out of Egypt; the descendants of Israel wheredistinguished by their family name. Ten tribes were named afterten of Jacob’s sons and the other two after Joseph’s sons. (See“A long time ago ...” for details.) From this point on, everymajor decision that involved this new nation had to have repre-sentation from each of the twelve tribes.

This book was written by at least seven different authors withDavid being credited with seventy-six of the one hundred andfifty songs. It was compiled over a period of around one thou-sand years ... from the time of Moses to the Israelites’ returnfrom exile in Babylon. The subjects covered in this book includesongs of joy, war, fear and praise with the common theme ofWORSHIP.

Psalm was first used as the temple hymnbook for the people ofIsrael and was also used as a personal devotional guide. It is thelargest book of the Bible and is the most quoted book of the OldTestament today. Psalm is also quoted more times in the NewTestament than any other book. It was used many times byJesus when He preached, answered the questions of the Jewishleaders and during His final hours on earth.

OLD TESTAMENT CHRONOLOGICAL STUDY: Week 19 page 4

A long time ago ... there was a large tent used by the Israelites to worship God in.This tent was called the Tabernacle. It was where God chose toshow His presence to His people. This special place was madeaccording to His plans.

The first thing God wanted was for the Tabernacle to be portable. It had to be carried by the Israelites as they traveled through thewilderness. The Tabernacle stood inside a courtyard surroundedby white linen curtains. Within the courtyard priests preparedburnt offerings to God. The Tabernacle itself had two rooms. Thefront one was called the Holy Place and the back one was calledthe Most Holy Place. All of the priests went in and out of the HolyPlace every day. Within it was the Altar of Incense, Table ofShowbread and the Golden Lampstand. Only the high priest wasallowed to enter the Most Holy Place and only one day a year. Inthis room stood the Ark of the Covenant where Moses had putthe Ten Commandments.

The Tabernacle was cared for by members of only one family ofdescendants of Jacob. They were called Levites, the descen-dants of Levi. Only Levites could be priests. Aaron and Moseswere both members of this clan. Aaron was the first high priest ofIsrael.

What we can learn from the story Just as the Tabernacle was a special place of worship, so arechurches today. Churches across the world are considered theplace where people come to worship God. Of course churchestoday do not look anything like the Tabernacle. In fact, there are

many different kinds of church buildings from formal buildingswith stain glass windows and pews to informal buildings thatmay be a part of a small shopping center.

There are many other differences between the Tabernacle andchurches. We no longer offer burnt offerings as they did back inMoses’ day. In the Old Testament, animals were regularly usedas offerings in an attempt to bring the people closer to God.When God sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross, burnt offer-ings were no longer needed.

God gave specific directions for how the Tabernacle, or MeetingTent, was to be made. He also gave specific instructions con-cerning how the people were to worship Him in this holy place.God knew His people would continue to make mistakes andneed to make atonement for them. (Atonement means “to makeup for a wrong act, to become friends again.”) God filled thisneed by providing the Tabernacle. Later this portable sanctuarywas replaced by the Temple built by King Solomon in Jerusalem.

Each aspect of the Tabernacle has significant meaning in the lifeof believers. First, the Tabernacle stood in the middle of theIsraelite camp. God lived in the center of His people just as Heis to be the center of our lives. There was only one gate to enterthe Tabernacle to be in God’s presence just as there is only oneway to God through Jesus, His Son. Even what the curtains ofthe tent were made from and how they were attached had sig-nificance! Every part of the Tabernacle represented the closerelationship between God and a redeemed people. It was toshow how God’s presence “not only sets us apart from others, but meets our needs for daily deliverance from sin’s power.”(Teacher’s Commentary)

Below is a simplistic chart of the symbolism connected with thefurnishings in the Tabernacle. Symbols are used extensively inthe modern church to represent our relationship with God.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge

Him, and He will make your paths straight.”Proverbs 3:5-6

Wisdom means “to live life skillfully” and Proverbs is a book fullof advise on how to do just that. It is full of practical every daywisdom, discernment, and discipline. It stresses how beautyand righteousness will replace foolishness and evil if we walkwith our Lord in dependence on Him. Its timeless truths touchevery facet of human relationships and benefits readers todayjust as it did thousands of years ago.

King Solomon is credited for being the primary writer of this OldTestament book. Solomon was said to have been the wisestman to have ever lived. The book of Proverbs not only includesthose principles he found to be true, but he also had a collectionof topical maxims other men and women of God held true.

Note: It is because this Old Testament book has so many practical instructions forus today that we have included Proverb Points as part of our Old TestamentChronological Study. In each unit we have included proverbs we feel willbenefit our kids as they grow up in grace and obedience to God. These arefound in the two take home parts of our study: Old Testament Notes andTable Talk.

OLD TESTAMENT CHRONOLOGICAL STUDY: Week 20 page 4

A long time ago ... there was a young man named Joshua who traveled across thewilderness with Moses. He was a brave man who loved God withall of his heart. He was a trusted aide to Moses and was one ofthe twelve spies who went to Canaan to see the land Godpromised the Israelites. Of the twelve spies, only Joshua andCaleb told the people they, with the help of God, could defeatthose who lived in the land. But the people would not listen tothem. They again began to complain to Moses and Aaron. Thismade God very angry! Moses interceded for the people one moretime. He told God to not kill all the people. God said He wouldspare their lives, but no one except Joshua and Caleb would setfoot into the Promised Land. For their disobedience, the Israeliteswandered in the desert across the Jordan River from Canaan forforty years.

Before Moses died, he made Joshua the new leader of Israel.Just as Moses had done, Joshua sent spies to check out theland. With the help of Rahab, a woman who lived on the wall ofthe city of Jericho, they were able to hide from the evil king andreturn to the Israelite’s camp. Unlike the spies sent by Moses, these two men said they could conquer the land with God’s help. And God did help. God gave Joshua a unique battle plan. Thefirst step was to cross the Jordan River. God told Joshua to havethe priests carry the ark of the covenant into the river. As soon asthey stepped into the river, it stopped flowing and all of the Israelites walked across its dry riverbed. The next obstaclewas the city of Jericho. God told Joshua to have his army walkquietly around the city walls one time for six days. On the seventhday seven priests carrying trumpets were to walk in front of the

priests carrying the ark of the covenant. The army was to followthe ark. They were to walk quietly around the walls of Jerichoseven times. Then the priests were to blow their trumpets andthe people were to shout. When Joshua and the Israelites didthis, the walls of the city fell! The army rushed in and capturedthe city. God commanded them to kill all of the people exceptRahab and her family. They then burned the city and all that wasin it.

What we can learn from the story This story is very important to us for two different reasons. Firstit shows us how important intercessory prayer is. That meanssomeone asks God to forgive someone else for something theydid wrong or asks God to help someone else. Second it showsus how important it is to turn to God for help when there areobstacles that block our path. Through prayer and faithfully fol-lowing God’s plan, we can overcome obstacles in our lives.

Joshua was well suited for his new role as leader of Israel. God’speople needed someone who would be able to lead them in bat-tle against the people who occupied the Promised Land. Joshuawas just the man for the job.

Historians believe Joshua was an officer in the Egyptian armyprior to the great Exodus. Joshua also was an aide to Mosesand had supported the invasion of Canaan when Moses sent thetwelve spies there. His faithfulness to God was rewarded whenhe was one of only two adult men from Egypt who lived longenough to enter the Promised Land.

Joshua valued his relationship with God. First he believed inGod’s stated promise, “I will give you every place where you setyour foot, as I promised Moses.” (Joshua 1:3). Second he hadGod’s promise to be with him, just as He had been with Moses.(Joshua 1:5) Third Joshua had the promise of God’s faithful-ness, “You shall lead these people to inherit the land I swore totheir forefathers to give them.” (Joshua 1:6) These three promis-es were given to Joshua by God. All Joshua was required to dowas:

“Be strong and courageous. Be careful to obeyall the law my servant Moses gave you ... that you may be successful wherever you go.”

Joshua 1:7

With these words of encouragement in his heart, Joshua wasable to overcome all of the obstacles that faced him and theIsraelites as they entered Canaan, the land promised their fore-fathers.
