MOON DAY 2017 PRESENTATIONSWELCOME TO MOON DAY 2017!SATURDAY JULY 22
Each year the Frontiers of Flight Museum and the National Space Society of North Texas collaborate to present the biggest annual space exposition in the State of Texas – MOON DAY! We are glad you are here to join with us in this celebration of the past, present, and future of space exploration.
Today you will find a wealth of interesting and informative STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) demonstrations, activities, and presentations from our many exhibitors and speakers. A “Moon Day 2017 Navigation Guide” to the locations of exhibitors and presentations is located in the center of this Activity Guide.
Our MOON ACADEMY classes for younger students are in Classroom A on the 1st Floor.
The LUNAR UNIVERSITY for college-level presentations convenes in the Conference Room on the 2nd Floor.
Our TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT programs are presented in Classroom B on the 1st Floor. Teachers can earn up to three hours of Professional Development Credits by attending these programs while learning about engaging activities they can take back to their classrooms.
KIDS CAN EARN PATCHES BY PARTICIPATING IN THE DAY’S ACTIVITIESMoon Day Patch (visit the Information Desk, 1st Floor)All kids can earn a Moon Day patch by completing any three activity pages in this Guide.
Girl Scouts STEM Center Patch (visit the Girl Scouts of NE Texas exhibit, 1st Floor)
• Daisies & Brownies: Complete any two activity pages in this Guide• Juniors & Cadettes: Complete any three activity pages in this Guide• All Girl Scouts: Qualify for the S, T, E, or M Patches by attending one
or more Moon Day Presentations (listed on page 3).
Boy Scout Merit Badges (visit the Circle Ten STEM Scouts exhibit, 1st Floor): Boy Scouts can meet requirements for these Merit Badges by participating in activities highlighted in this Activity Guide with the BSA logo.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERDr. Janet Kavandi
Our Keynote Speaker for Moon Day 2017 is Dr. Janet Kavandi, the Director of the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Kavandi is a veteran of three spaceflights as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle – STS-91, STS-99, and STS-104. She has logged more than 33 days in space, traveling more than 13.1 million miles in 535 Earth orbits. She is also one of the few astronauts to have flown to both the Russian Space Station Mir and the International Space Station.
Dr. Kavandi was awarded a Doctorate in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Washington in 1990, and was selected as a NASA Astronaut in December 1994. Prior to her appointment as Director of the NASA Glenn Research Center, she held several leadership positions, including Deputy Chief of the NASA Astronaut Office, Branch Chief for the International Space Station, and Director of Flight Crew Operations at the Johnson Space Center. Dr. Kavandi is the first speaker for the annual John Hampton Luckadoo Annual Lecture.
John Hampton Luckadoo Annual Lecture
The John Hampton Luckadoo Annual Lecture is named for “Lucky” Luckadoo who served in the 100th Bomb Group of the Army Air Forces in WWII.
The John Hampton Luckadoo Annual Lecture is funded by Elaine Luckadoo Abbott and Rick Abbott in recognition and love of “Lucky.” The annual lecture provides for guest speakers who share their stories and experience about aviation and space flight with students in the
next generation as part of the Museum’s commitment to STEM education.
“Lucky” has been a frequent visitor, speaker and supporter of the Frontiers of Flight Museum. His contributions have included the restoration funding of a B-17 model which is on display at the Museum. In 2013, volunteers Mike Litvin, Gary Seidel, Ken Branscome, Willia Munroe, Peggy Upham, and Joe Swift built the “Lucky” Sim, a flight simulator used in the Museum’s community outreach and STEM program.
