Points of Pride

Ponderosa Elementary named 2013 National Blue Ribbon School

Ponderosa Elementary School was named a 2013 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. It is one of only five schools in the state and 286 schools in the nation to earn this prestigious honor, which recognizes public and private elementa-ry, middle, and high schools where students perform at very high levels or where significant improvements

are being made in students’ levels of achievement.

Perfect ACT scoresFour Cherry Creek School District students were among

the 17 students statewide who were honored Nov. 14 by the Colorado Board of Education for earning a perfect score of 36 on the ACT taken by every high school junior in Colo-rado last spring. Those students are:

• Rick Laoprasert, Cherry Creek High School• Nate Gibby, Cherokee Trail High School • David Mathews, Cherokee Trail High School• Susan Niederhoff, Smoky Hill High School

Students in the Cherry Creek School District consistent-ly score above the state and national average on the ACT. The district average ACT composite score for 2013 is 21.6. The Colorado average is 20.1 and the national average score is 20.9.

Restructuring of district bond debt saves taxpayers another $4.2 million

In December, the Cherry Creek School District suc-cessfully sold $31,215,000 of District General Obligation debt for savings of $4.2 million. The issue refinances $35,345,000 of Series 2004 bonds which were outstand-ing and which carried an interest rate of 4.3%. The bond issue was structured as tax exempt bonds maturing over the period of 2014-2022.

“This transaction reduced the outstanding debt, while also lowering the average interest rate from 4.3% to 2%,” Guy Bellville, Cherry Creek School District CFO said. “The resultant savings are passed directly to the taxpayers of the District through reduced tax collections totaling over $4.2 million spread over these next 10 years.”

Grandview students to represent Colorado in national competition

Grandview High School will represent Colora-do at the National We the People Competition in Washington, DC, April 26-29, 2014. The Grand-view team, comprised of 19 Advanced Placement Government students, taught by teacher Jeff Rei-man, won the state competition in December. The We the People program promotes students’ civic competence by enhancing their understanding of democratic principles and institutions.

Cherry Creek schools honored for achievement, growth

Fifteen Cherry Creek schools have earned the 2013 John Irwin Schools of Excellence Award from the Colorado Department of Education. The award is presented to schools that “exceed” expectations related to academic achievement and that “meet or exceed” expectations related to academic growth gaps. Congratulations to:

In addition, 13 Cherry Creek schools received the 2013 Governor’s Distinguished Improvement Award, which is presented to schools that “exceed” expecta-tions related to academic growth and “meet or exceed” expectations related to academic growth gaps. These schools demonstrate the highest levels of growth for not just some students but all student groups. Congratulations to:

SPECIAL EVENTS

Cherry Creek Schools Honor Bands to perform

M ore than 130 outstanding student mu-sicians representing every middle and high school in the district will perform in the Cherry Creek School District

Honor Bands Concert at 4:30 p.m. on Sat., Feb. 1, in the Overland High School Auditorium, located at 12400 E. Jewell Avenue, Aurora. The concert is free and open to the public.

The CCSD Honor Bands program, now in its eighth year, is designed to continually raise the standard of music education in the district and recognize excep-tional student musicians.

“We have combined efforts to host an event that will provide our students with a unique experience of working with gifted conductors and the chance to work alongside similarly talented and motivated peers,” said Sara Wynes, associ-ate band director at Cherry Creek High School. “The district honor band event allows us to affirm the critical role that the Arts play in the education of all students throughout the district. Music is essential in Cherry Creek! The instrumental music programs are continuing with our exciting journey of collaboration and ex-cellence. We are honored to share this with our community!”

This year, Dr. Matthew Roed-er, Assistant Professor of Music and Associate Director of Bands

at the University of Colorado, will be the high school clinician. Mr. Mike Perez, Director of Bands at Kinard Middle School in Fort Collins, will be the middle school clinician.

Congratulations to all of the Honor Band students listed on the facing page!

Award-winning filmmaker to speak at Cherry Creek Schools Foundation 20th Annual Luncheon

N irvan Mullick, after stumbling upon Caine’s Arcade, a handmade cardboard arcade, or-

ganized a flash mob of customers and chronicled the event in a short film. The film went viral and with-in the first two months inspired over 100 schools in nine coun-tries to create cardboard arcades inspired by the movie. The film has been featured on NBC Nightly News, CNBC and Good Morning America.

Mullick will be the keynote speaker at the Cherry Creek Schools Foundation 20th Annu-al Luncheon, which will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 14, at the Hyatt Regency Tech Center. Get more

information at www.ccsdfounda-tion.org.

The Cherry Creek Schools Foundation builds relationships in the community and connects the Cherry Creek School District with business partners and indi-vidual contributors who provide resources so every student stays at the forefront of learning. They fund innovative opportunities for students and educators.

Join us March 14 and celebrate 20 years of giving to the students of Cherry Creek Schools!

Thank you Board of Education members

T he five members of the Cherry Creek Schools Board of Education are dedicated public ser-

vants – unpaid volunteers – who work diligently to ensure that the children of Cherry Creek receive the best education possible – one that prepares them for success in college, the military, the workplace and as contributing members of our democratic society.

January is School Board Rec-ognition Month and the Cherry Creek School District is proud to acknowledge the steadfast com-mitment and invaluable contribu-tions made by the members of the Board of Education; Karen Fisher, Claudine McDonald, Jim O’Brien, Randy Perlis and David Willman.

“How fortunate we are to have these selfless volunteers leading our district,” said Dr. Harry Bull, superintendent of Cherry Creek Schools. “They give generously of their time to thoroughly study and carefully consider many challeng-ing and complex issues. Every decision they make is based on what is in the best interest of our students.”

Board members are responsi-ble for the academic success of more than 51,000 students, as well as the efficient management of a district with nearly 9,000 full and part-time employees and an annual general fund budget of over $400 million. They spend

countless hours studying student achievement and school finance, working with lawmakers and edu-cational experts, meeting with dis-trict administrators, teachers, staff members, parents and students, and attending school and district events.

Each board member represents one of the district’s five direc-tor districts, but they are elected ‘at-large’ to four-year terms by registered voters via a non-parti-san ballot.

Board of Education meetings are generally held at 7 p.m. on the second Monday of the month at one of the Cherry Creek schools. Contact information for the Board of Education is 720-554-4300 or [email protected].

Cherry Creek teachers achieve National Board certification

Thirteen teachers in the Cherry Creek School District earned Nation-al Board Certification in

2013, and another six renewed their certification, according to the National Board for Profession-al Teaching Standards (NBPTS), which sets the standards for teach-ing excellence and administers the rigorous National Board Certifica-tion program. The Cherry Creek School District now has 113 Na-tional Board Certified teachers, the third most in the state of Colorado.

“We are so proud of these ex-ceptional educators and the deep commitment they have made to their own learning and their stu-dents’ learning,” said Dr. Harry Bull, superintendent of Cherry Creek Schools. “They have invest-ed an incredible amount of time and effort to take their teaching to an ever-higher level. That, in turn, contributes to the academic growth and success of each and every one of their students.”

National Board Certified teach-ers have successfully demonstrat-ed advanced teaching knowledge, skills and practices. Certification is achieved through a rigorous, per-formance-based assessment that typically takes one to three years to complete.

“As a result of going through the long and difficult process of achieving National Board Certifi-cation, I am much more reflective

with regard to my teaching as well as my lesson planning, which is a clear benefit to my students,” said Grandview Mathematics teacher Rachael Narcisi. “My contact with my student’s families has improved dramatically which means we are partnering together in each stu-dent’s education – which is another benefit to my students.”

“The process focuses on how planning and teaching, and a teacher’s own learning, affect student achievement,” said Ila Adhikari, an English Language Acquisition specialist at Timberline Elementary. “I was able to change the way I plan, the way I collabo-rate with my co-teachers, and how I assess student learning. It was a rigorous but amazing experience.”

The Cherry Creek Schools teach-ers who achieved National Board Certification in 2013 are: • Ila Adhikari, English Language Acquisition specialist, Timberline Elementary• Nicole Burrell, Instructional Coach, Sagebrush Elementary• Jennifer Christianson, Kinder-garten, Ponderosa Elementary• Doug Cole, English, Eaglecrest High School• Ann Finseth, Dakota Valley Elementary• Summer Kavanaugh, Science, Challenge School• Corey Kesler, Science, Eaglec-rest High School

• Erin Kesler, Science, Eaglecrest High School• Rachael Narcisi, Mathematics, Grandview High School• Pamela Patrick, Social Studies, Cherokee Trail High School• Heather Prins, Instructional Coach, Arrowhead Elementary• Sarah Ramsey, English, Cherry Creek High School• Megan Webb, Social Studies, Cherokee Trail High School

“I knew that the process of pur-suing National Board Certification would make me a better teacher,” said Doug Cole, an English teacher at Eaglecrest High School. “Re-flecting on my teaching has made my lessons more culturally respon-sive, rigorous and engaging, and my students are the real beneficia-ries of the process.”

“Rigor runs through my blood and now I know that I can achieve this in my kindergarten classroom on a daily basis,” said Jennifer Christianson, a kindergarten teacher at Ponderosa Elementa-ry. “By taking the adventure of working towards a National Board Certification, it perpetually had me learning curriculum and the stan-dards in depth, instructing and assessing my diverse classroom of learners and reflecting upon my practice.”

The Cherry Creek Schools teach-ers who renewed their National Board Certification in 2013 are: • Mary Bartholomew, Science, Smoky Hill High School• John Fennell, Science, Eaglec-rest High School• Cheryl Paricio, Science, Smoky

Hill High School• Mark Paricio, Science, Smoky Hill High School• Suzette Phillips, Social Studies, Cherokee Trail High School• Mimi Webber, English, Campus Middle School

National Board Certified teach-ers must renew their certification every 10 years.

Nationally, less than two percent of teachers have earned Nation-al Board Certification. In 2013, 4,117 teachers achieved National Board Certification, bringing the total number of National Board Certified teachers nationwide to 106,356. All 50 states, the District of Columbia and more than 700 local school districts recognize National Board Certification as a mark of distinction and excellence.

Aurora Mental Health Center

Aurora Mental Health Center

For some kids, learning to concentrate is the hardest part of school. And in many cases, it’s not something they can control. Learning difficulties can be associated with anxiety, depression, and attention-deficit disorders. Fortunately they can be managed with the right care and counseling, helping kids discover the love of learning and academic success.

Children experiencing significant changes in mood swings, interests, anxiety levels, occurrence of nightmares, and school performance may need a little extra help.

Closely managing your child’s emotional and academic development at an early age can give them a jump start to a rewarding life.

For more information, call Aurora Mental Health Center at 303.617.2300.

The Aurora Fox presents “Painted Bread, the story of Frida Kahlo” by Melissa Lucero McCarl, all agesLong before the critically acclaimed film Frida brought the compelling life of painter Frida Kahlo before the general public, local audiences were thrilled by Denver actress and playwright Melissa Lucero McCarl’s Painted Bread. The Cherry Creek School District is one of the highest-achieving school districts in the state. Students consistently rank well above the state averages on statewide accountability tests, and above state and national averages on SAT and ACT college board exams.

All of the schools in the Cherry Creek School District are in the top two categories of the new accreditation system recently developed by the Colorado Department of Education. Ninety-eight percent rank in the highest category, compared to 70% statewide.

The Cherry Creek School District has the third most National Board Certified Teachers in Colorado.

We educate more than 53,000 children and serve over 300,000 residents in 108 square miles that spread across eight municipalities: Cherry Hills Village, Centennial, Foxfield, Glendale, Greenwood Village and portions of Aurora, Englewood and Denver.

SchoolMatch, an independent, nationwide service, has recognized the Cherry Creek School District as among only 16% of school districts nationwide with its “What Parents Want Award” for 18 consecutive years.

In the Cherry Creek School District, it is not about averages,

it is about individuals
