    Network Diagrams

The sequence of activities can berepresented in the form of a network

Network diagrams first represent theorder that tasks MUST be completed

They can later be modified to

represent how the tasks are actuallygoing to be completed

    Activity-on-Node AON

This is the form of Network diagrams mostcommonly used

Tasks and Milestones are represented as abox called a node

Each activity has a unique name

Order & relationships are shown as arrows

Any activity may either:Succeed (follow) task B succeeds task A

    Precede (go before)

    task A precedes task B

    Any activity may:

Be performed concurrently Task C can beperformed at the same time as Task D

An AON diagram should not containmore than 50 nodes

For large projects break the project intosubprojects to make it easier to manage

    Preparing AON

When developing your AON you mustconsider

Given where we are in the project, whatactivity(s) should be performed nextWhich activity(s) would have to befinished before this one can start

Other considerations such as technicalrestrictions, policy or procedurerestrictions or resource restrictions

    Preparing AON

Using the WBS identify the order thattasks must be done (not could be)

Prepare you AON on scrap paper

    Check your diagram

Revise your diagram to removeoverlapping arrows

Check your diagramRevise your diagram to reflect resourcerestrictions and preferable task order
